Virgil van Dijk omitted from Southampton squad amid growing transfer speculation

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk is wanted by Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea

Manchester City want the Dutch defender in a mega £60m deal next month.

Liverpool and Chelsea are also keen but City are now leading the race for his signature.

The Telegraph claim the Premier League pace setters are already in talks with Saints over a transfer.

Starsport revealed last week that Pep Guardiola has made getting Van Dijk a top transfer priority.

However, Van Dijk won’t be an immediate starter at City despite his massive price tag.

He’d have to knock John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi out of the way first.

Man City and Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk left out for Spurs trip

Show/hide article…

Manchester City and Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk was left out of Southampton’s squad for their Premier League clash against Tottenham.

It is the second time in successive games the 26-year-old has been omitted from the match day squad, having watched Southampton draw with Huddersfield last week from the stands.

Manager Mauricio Pellegrino said he was fit for selection on Saturday but decided to leave him out once again amid speculation Van Dijk wants to leave St Mary’s in the January transfer window.

Southampton were thrashed 5-2 by Spurs at Wembley, and are slipping closer and closer to the Premier League relegation zone.

Holland international Van Dijk endured a fractious summer with boss Pellegrino after his proposed move to Liverpool collapsed.

The pair seemingly had put their quarrel to bed with the defender featuring regularly in Southampton’s defence after making his return to the side in the 1-0 away win at Crystal Palace back in September.

But with City boss Pep Guardiola lining up a £50m move for van Dijk in the winter window and Liverpool set to revive their interest in him, Van Dijk and Pellegrino have again locked horns.

The Saints boss warned the defender, who trained with the rest of the squad on Sunday, he is no longer guaranteed a spot in Southampton’s starting XI.

And Pellegrino has given another indication he could be prepared to cash in on the wantaway star after leaving him out of his 18-man squad for the trip to Wembley.

The hefty fee they could receive for his services would likely be re-invested to bolster their attacking options.

Southampton’s front men have been inconsistent and blunt this season, with only six teams in the Premier League posting less goals.

England striker Kane goes into the match knowing he can not only propel Spurs into the top four for a couple of hours at least, but also break a long-standing Premier League record.

Should he score, he will pull clear of Alan Shearer’s achievement of 36 Premier League goals in a calendar year in 1995.

Virgil van Dijk left out of Southampton squad as Manchester City near £60m deal

Show/hide article…

Manchester City are nearing a £60m deal to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk after the Dutchman was left out of the squad that travelled to London for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

The 26-year-old defender handed in a transfer request in the summer to try and force through a move to Liverpool, only for Saints to stand firm in the defiance against selling him and exile Van Dijk from the first team squad until the transfer window shut at the start of September.

Van Dijk has since returned to Mauricio Pellegrino’s squad and been a regular starter this season, but he was left out of the side that was named by the manager to take on Spurs and did not travel with the rest of the squad.

When asked why Van Dijk was not named in the squad, Pellegrino did not mention any injury and referenced the growing transfer speculation, before adding: “With Virgil, there is a lot of speculation, but we have to wait and see until January and then we can talk.”

Liverpool remain interested in signing Van Dijk given their continuing troubles in defence – having allowed a 2-0 lead evaporate at Arsenal last Friday to draw 3-3 – but it appears that City have steamed in ahead of the Reds in the hope of signing Van Dijk as the replacement for club captain Vincent Kompany, who Pep Guardiola feels cannot be relied upon anymore due to his persistent injury troubles.

With John Stones also sidelined with a hamstring injury, City manager Guardiola is keen to strengthen what is already the strongest defence in the Premier League, having conceded just 12 goals in 19 matches this season, and after putting off plans to bring in a new forward in Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez until the summer, he has made reinforcing City’s defence his priority.

Guardiola is currently relying on Nicolas Otamendi and Eliaquim Mangala at centre-back, with the Spaniard willing to sell the latter last summer had a team come on for the French defender that met City’s valuation so that they could sign West Bromwich Albion’s Jonny Evans – a deal that failed to go through before the summer transfer deadline.

Two devastating deaths happened during today’s Spurs game, but most have no idea

Show/hide article…

Boxing Day marks one of the most exciting moments in the footballing calendar, with fans treated to a feast of festive fixtures across the UK.

But consider this.

In the time between kick-off and the whistle blowing for half-time today in the match between Tottenham and Southampton at Wembley in the Premier League, one man in the UK will have died from prostate cancer.

And another will have been killed by the disease before the 90 minutes was up.

They could have been a father, a brother, a husband, a best friend, or the man you sit next to at the match every other week.

Such a striking statistic is the reason managers, players, pundits and fans are uniting with Prostate Cancer UK to help give prostate cancer the red card and make one of the best saves yet - lives.

Premier League managers Sean Dyche at Burnley, above, Newcastle United’s Rafa Benitez and Mark Hughes at Stoke City, below, are among more than 40 stars helping to blow the whistle on what has become the most common cancer among men.

“It’s startling to hear 330,000 men - enough to fill Turf Moor 14 times over - are living with prostate cancer in the UK,” says Dyche.

“There is still a lack of education about this illness. There has always been an old-school mentality about thinking things will be fine.

“That can’t continue. I want fans - and men - to wise up about the risk of this disease.”

Currently, 11,000 men die every year from prostate cancer. Based on current trends, this number will rise to over 14,500 by 2026, and make it the most commonly diagnosed cancer of all in the UK by 2030.

But prostate cancer can often be successfully treated - if it is caught early enough.

That’s why leading managers and players are helping to raise awareness, by proudly wearing Prostate Cancer UK’s “Man of Men” pin badge to show their support.

The iconic logo, which will also be worn on players’ shirts more than 60,000 times next season, symbolises everyone who wants to stop prostate cancer becoming a killer.

Prostate Cancer UK are now calling on fans’ support to achieve that.

Doing so will mean fewer families being torn apart because they have lost someone they love.

“Prostate cancer is an opposition like no other,” says Brighton boss Chris Hughton.

“Stats like one man dies every 45 minutes show why we all have to take action to change this.

“By wearing a Prostate Cancer UK ‘Man of Men’ badge - like me - you can change the game for men.”

Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe adds: “More than 11,000 men die every year from prostate cancer in the UK. Think about that for a second. That’s the entire capacity of our ground. Every seat. It’s something we need to turn around.”

Romeu: “We reacted too late”

Show/hide article…

The visitors improved after the break, scoring twice through Sofiane Boufal and Dušan Tadić, but the damage had been done either side of the interval thanks to Harry Kane’s hat-trick and further strikes from Son Heung-Min and Dele Alli.

It was a tough result to take for Oriol but one from which he hopes his team can recover quickly before Saturday’s trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.

“We are in a tough moment but just by being together, we will turn this around,” the midfielder said.

“We reacted too late today, we gave away too many chances, too many spaces between the lines. We have another tough match coming up and we need to change this fast or we will be in the same situation on Saturday.

“Football always gives you a chance to bounce back and we have to do that straight away for everyone at the club.

“We don’t want to be down at the wrong end of the table. I don’t think Southampton should be in that position. We have to improve and then we will have a better chance of picking up points.”

Saints sunk by Spurs

Show/hide article…

The striker added to his mounting goal tally with a first-half brace, as well as the completion of his hat-trick in the second period, and the points were further safeguarded with strikes from Dele Alli and Heung-Min Son, who also assisted each other’s efforts.

Sofiane Boufal netted a consolation goal in the 64th minute, with a fulminating left foot strike, beating Hugo Lloris at his near post, but yielding little reward for the travelling Saints, before substitute Dušan Tadić reduced arrears again late on.

Mauricio Pellegrino made four changes to his side, including a consecutive starting berth for young Matt Targett at left-back.

With both Saints’ regular fullbacks, Cédric and Ryan Bertrand, sidelined by persisting injuries, Pellegrino reverted to a back four with Jack Stephens on the right for a second game running.

Six minutes had elapsed before the home side had carved an opening in characteristic style, culminating in a Kane assault on goal. Alli worked the original space, using clever feet and vision to unearth Eriksen’s incisive charge forward.

The Dane fizzed a delivery low in to the path of the onrushing Kane, whose contact sent the ball a comfortable yard wide.

Alli had strayed in to a dangerous position again moments later, lurking ominously at the back post when found by Serge Aurier’s lofted cross-field pass. The forward elected to take the shot on the volley, cushioning the effort with care, but not with the required accuracy.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg found his way in to the referee’s book in the 20th minute, clipping Danny Rose as the fullback had wriggled free of a series of attempted challenges. The resulting free-kick was delivered meticulously by Eriksen, and dispatched in exemplary fashion by the goal-ravenous Kane, who looked intent on overtaking Alan Shearer’s Premier League landmark of 36 goals in a calendar year from the off.

A partnership all too familiar for the Spurs faithful inside Wembley Stadium, Eriksen and Kane had struck a clear understanding from the first whistle, and their combination play proved lethal as the home side edged in front.

A constant threat, Eriksen fizzed a shot narrowly wide on the half-hour mark, as Saints struggled to find any early rhythm, although some joy was being gained down either flank, inhabited by Nathan Redmond and Boufal.

The latter tried his luck from distance midway through the half, getting enough purchase and pace on the shot to force Lloris to parry the effort, rather than hold it. Danny Rose had made a recovery run in order to clean up the spillage, nodding the ball back to his ‘keeper unchallenged, before the Frenchman carelessly allowed it to slip through his gloves before then gathering.

Talismanic Kane, who was fresh from a hat-trick last time out against Burnley, doubled his tally, and Spurs’ lead in the 40th minute. Son, almost operating as an auxiliary striker, found some space down the left before firing a low cross in to the area of indecision between ‘keeper and defender.

Arriving late, the England international made no mistake from six yards, giving the London outfit a commanding lead entering the break.

In need of a big second half performance, the visitors were out of the blocks quickest, with Shane Long and Mario Lemina both going close. The Irish international saw his effort well saved, before the woodwork intervened as Lemina’s drive cannoned agonisingly off the crossbar.

A quick-fire double had the hosts back in command soon after, though, as Alli and Son contributed goals to add to Kane’s first-half brace. The architect of most of Spurs’ attacking play, Alli engineered a yard of space and curled an effort inside the far post, before turning provider as Son added a fourth in the 51st minute.

Boufal netted a consolation goal in the 64th minute, but his work was soon undone as Kane completed his hat-trick four minutes later, with an impressive show of strength to hold off his opposition defender before deftly chipping the ball in to the net.

Substitute Tadić reduced the deficit again in the 80th minute, looping a shot over Lloris, but the game had already escaped Saints, who face another difficult away trip in four days time against Manchester United.

5 things we learned as Tottenham smash Southampton on Boxing Day

Show/hide article…

Spurs’ striker Harry Kane continues on his way to becoming one of the best goal scorers of all-time. The England international scored a hat-trick against Southampton to make it 56 goals in 2017 and becomes the best striker of the year in the top five European Leagues. Kane surpassed Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, who finishes the year with 54 goals, as well as Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski, Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and PSG’s Edison Cavani, who are even with 53.

Moreover, Spurs’ No 10 entered into Premier League’s history too, as he scored his 39th goal in 2017 and broke Alan Shearer’s 1995 record of 36 strikes during a calendar year. Shearer’s amazing performance helped Blackburn Rovers to win the Premier League in 1994/95 season and now Kane is trying to achieve the same goal, although Manchester City’s form looks likely to make that very difficult.

But what did we learn from a lunchtime Boxing Day cracker?

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino has a lot of work ahead, at least in terms of defence. The level shown by his four defenders against Tottenham was never close to good enough and Spurs’ strikers had too many spaces and chances to pepper the goal of Fraser Foster.

The south coast team may need to strengthen their defence via the transfer market if they do not want to find themselves struggling against relegation by the end of the season. Of course, Pellegrino could lose his best defender anyway as Manchester City has been linked to Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk.

If they weren’t going to buy already, they will now.

Southampton travelled to Wembley without his top goalscorer Charlie Austin after the Englishman was banned for three matches for violent conduct.

Austin caught Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl in the face during the 1-1 draw in Saturday and the FA banned him for three games.

His absence against Tottenham was painfully noticeable. Instead of Austin, Pellegrino chose Shane Long as the main striker but the Irishman continues with his amazing dry streak. Long has not scored during his last 34 appearances with the Saints. This winter transfer period could be a great opportunity for Southampton to try to solve this scoring problem, as well as the one they have at the back.

Apart from Harry Kane’s barely credible level of performance, Spurs’ best news is the great performances of Korean Son Heung-min. Tottenham’s No 7 is in outstanding form and put in another great performance against Southampton, adding another goal to his impressive numbers.

In addition to his attacking skills, Son contributes to the Spurs with an extraordinary defensive attitude - as you have to under Poch. The Korean always helps both full-backs and shows a great intensity when it is needed. If he continues with this level, it will be very difficult for returning Argentinian Erik Lamela to find his way back into the first XI.

Although Spurs played well against Southampton and their attacking threat is not in doubt, they also showed some problems in defence, a familiar situation all season.

It may be enough to fight in the Premier League and continue to get results, but not in the Champions League when you come up against elite attackers in the knockout stages. After a great result, beating Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, now the Spurs will have to face Juventus in the last 16 and even stronger teams if they go further.

If you can’t defend, you can’t progress in a competition as good as that so Pochettino has his work cut out. Two sloppy goals today.

Yeah, you might have heard something about Harry Kane? We’ve covered that pretty thoroughly here and here.
