Claude Puel explains why Oriol Romeu is ‘not far off’ N’Golo Kante’s level

Show/hide article…

Oriol Romeu is “not far off” the level of newly-crowned PFA Player of the Year N’Golo Kante and is good enough to play for Spain, according to Southampton boss Claude Puel.

Kante picked up the award on Sunday evening after proving himself as one of the Premier League’s best midfielders and is on course to drive his second club in two seasons to the title, after doing so last season with Leicester City.

Romeu, on the other hand, failed to make the grade at Chelsea after coming through the ranks at Barcelona and was sold to Southampton in 2015 after sending time on loan at both Valencia and Stuttgart.

He has since found himself a key cog in the Southampton midfield, filling the void left by Victor Wanyama when he moved to Tottenham, and Puel is confident Romeu can more than hold his own when he takes his Saints to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

“I think he’s not far off Kante,” Puel said. “He is very important for us. He recovers the ball so well and is a technical player.

“If we see the quality of his games since the beginning of the season, N’Golo Kante brings the same qualities as Oriol for us because he’s very consistent and in every game he gives good performances, with consistency and quality.

“He’s an important player for this team because he can do fantastic work to recover the ball and start the play.

“Without (Kante) for Chelsea it’s difficult and the same with Romeu, it’s difficult for us without him.

“We will see for the future, we are confident in him and, for me, he can look to getting in the selection with Spain, for example.”

Antonio Conte’s side will be looking to build on their FA Cup semi-final win over Tottenham by reopening the gap to seven points between the two sides before Spurs play on Wednesday.

And while Puel admits the Blues are the best team in the league as a result of their high level of consistency, he also insisted he is only interested on Southampton’s place in the table, and not Chelsea’s.

“They are a fantastic team that want to win the title, but for us as well it is important to take points,” he added.

“I am confident with my players. They work very well in training. It’s important to play our game and enjoy it.

“The best team in the Premier League is the one with the most consistency and, for the moment, that is Chelsea.”

Puel: Romeu is our own Kante

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel says Southampton will welcome back their very own N’Golo Kante when Oriol Romeu returns from a two-match suspension at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

"Kante is a very important player for this team because he does fantastic work to recover the ball and start the play,” Puel said ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Chelsea.

“N’Golo has the same qualities and the same play as Romeu with us. Without Kante it’s difficult for Chelsea and without Romeu it’s difficult for us. I think he’s not far from Kante.”

Former Chelsea midfielder Romeu ‘not far off’ Kante’s level, says Puel

Show/hide article…

Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu is “not far off” the standard of Chelsea’s newly-crowned PFA player of the year N’Golo Kante, according to Claude Puel.

Kante has become one of the most influential midfielders in the division, playing a huge role in Leicester’s memorable Premier League title win last season and looking good for a second successive championship, this time with Antonio Conte’s Chelsea.

Romeu, on the other hand, is now one of Saints’ most influential players, performing in the defensive midfield anchorman role admirably following Victor Wanyama’s summer departure to Tottenham.

The 25-year-old Spaniard came through the ranks at Barcelona before moving to Stamford Bridge in 2011. He was on the Chelsea books for four years but spent time on loan with Valencia and Stuttgart.

Ahead of Southampton’s trip to west London on Tuesday, Puel has compared Romeu, who is expected to start against his former club after missing Saints’ last two games through suspension, to Kante and the manager feels both men are almost equals in terms of quality.

“I think he’s not far off Kante,” Puel said at his pre-match press conference. "He is very important for us. He recovers the ball so well and is a technical player.

"If we see the quality of his games since the beginning of the season, N’Golo Kante brings the same qualities as Oriol for us because he’s very consistent and in every game he gives good performances, with consistency and quality.

"He’s an important player for this team because he can do fantastic work to recover the ball and start the play.

“We will see for the future, we are confident in him and, for me, he can look to getting in the selection with Spain, for example.”

On Chelsea, he added: "They are a fantastic team that want to win the title, but for us as well it is important to take points.

"I am confident with my players. They work very well in training. It’s important to play our game and enjoy it.

“The best team in the Premier League is the one with the most consistency and, for the moment, that is Chelsea.”

Everything you need to know for Chelsea vs Southampton

Show/hide article…

Chelsea can afford little time for celebration following their thrilling FA Cup semi-final victory over Tottenham in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday. They return to Premier League action on Tuesday against middling Southampton with an opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table to seven points before Spurs are in action on Wednesday.

While Chelsea’s 4-2 victory at Wembley may have given them the psychological edge in the run-in, they must improve their league form following surprise defeats to Crystal Palace and Manchester United, given Tottenham’s impressive Premier League form of late.

Southampton, ninth in the Premier League table, should be well rested given their last match was a 0-3 home defeat to Manchester City on 15 April. The Saints have little to play for in the remainder of the campaign, but Claude Puel will be desperate to secure a top-half finish in his first season in English football; an achievable aspiration given they have two games in hand over eighth place West Brom.

Chelsea vs Southampton kicks off at 19:45 on Tuesday night.

The match will be shown live on Sky Sports 1 from 19:30. Highlights will be shown at 12am on Sky Sports 1.

Diego Costa: Surely a contender for Player of Season during the first-half of the season, Chelsea forward Costa has only scored three goals and provided no assists since 15 January. With rumours linking him with a lucrative move to the Chinese Super League refusing to subside, Costa’s Chelsea career may depend on his form returning to its pre-Christmas heights.

After being dropped for Chelsea’s FA Cup semi-final on Saturday, Costa will have a point to prove should he be restored to the starting eleven.

Southampton have failed to keep a Premier League clean sheet against Chelsea since December 2002. There have been 13 encounters between the two in the league in the meantime.

Following Chelsea’s 1-3 home defeat to Southampton in October 2015 which left the champions floundering in 16th in the Premier League, we enjoyed a classic Jose Mourinho rant in his post-match interview. Jose was only asked one question but his diatribe, directed mainly at the officials, lasted seven minutes.

Eden Hazard: Despite starting Saturday’s semi-final on the bench, Hazard’s impact still proved decisive after entering the fray in the second-half. He scored Chelsea’s third with a brilliant left-footed strike from outside the box to stem Spurs’ incessant pressure. The Belgian has scored four goals in his last four appearances in all competitions.

Arsenal will take on Chelsea in battle to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton

Show/hide article…

Arsenal have made a move for Virgil van Dijk even though there is an acknowledgement that Chelsea remain favourites to sign the Southampton centre-half.

Liverpool, Everton and Manchester City have also expressed interest in Van Dijk, who is expected to cost around £50 million when he is sold this summer.

The 25-year-old has not featured for Southampton since damaging a foot in January and there is a growing sense that he has already played his last game for the club, who are determined to maximise his transfer value.

It is understood that Arsenal are prepared to match any wages offered by rival clubs for the Holland international who they considered when he left Celtic for Southampton for just £13 million in 2015.

If Arsenal cannot land Van Dijk they will look elsewhere to strengthen a defence which manager Arsène Wenger has re-moulded in the past two games – winning both – as he has moved to a three-man back line.

Redmond reveals how his mum almost put a halt to his career before it started

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond passed the biggest test of his career when he made his England debut in Germany.

But the Southampton star admits he may never have made the grade as a pro if he failed in school.

Redmond burst onto the scene as a teenager and earned a place on Birmingham’s bench before his 16th birthday.

However, the wing-wizard was warned he wouldn’t be able to sign terms with the Blues unless he performed in the classroom as well.

He said: “I was on the bench for Birmingham before I was even doing my GCSEs. It was difficult not getting too excited.

“But my mum warned me that If I didn’t do well in my exams then she wouldn’t let me sign my scholarship. I had to get minimum grade Cs. She was deadly serious.

“I’m not stupid. She was just trying to make sure I had the basics and a foundation underneath me so that I could kick on in the worst case scenario.”

Redmond credits his mum, Michelle, for keeping him on the right track as he made his way through the ranks at St Andrew’s.

However, the 23-year-old admits he is not too old for a verbal volley from his biggest fan if he fails to produce the goods.

“She raised me on her own and took me to every game from when I was six or seven right up until I could drive, so I can’t thank her enough,” he said.

“My mum wanted to make sure I kept my head down and didn’t get into any trouble. It’s been embedded in me from the start.

“There were bad crowds all around where I grew up.

"Sometimes you get hit with a realisation with what’s right and wrong. I had to be in before the street lights came on. If I put a foot wrong it was all about learning my lesson.

“Kids today are happy to sit on the Playstation or with their iPads, which baffles me. When I was that age I was outside kicking a ball about all day. If I misbehaved I wouldn’t be allowed out.”

Redmond will be hoping Southampton can cause a shock on Tuesday night when Claude Puel’s men travel to leaders Chelsea.

And the former Norwich flyer insists the Saints have the weapons to “hurt” Antonio Conte’s Blues.

He added: “I’m not surprised how well they’ve done because got fantastic players. It’s good to see them back in the mix as it felt like there was something missing with them out of it last season.

“But any team on their day is beatable. We need to be solid because they are dangerous but they can be hurt - every team has a weakness.

“They’re fighting to win the league and we’re fighting to finish as high as we can, so we’ve got different agendas, but we’ll both be trying to win the game.”

Conte on alert to world-class Gabbiadini

Show/hide article…

Antonio Conte says Chelsea are working on a way to stop Manolo Gabbiadini when Southampton visit Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening.

“He is a really talented player with a fantastic left foot, one of the best in the world,” Conte said of the striker he knew as a coach in Italy.

“We must pay great attention and I have to talk with my players, and my goalkeeper coach has started to talk with the goalkeepers to give advice about this player.”

Ten years after Alan Ball’s death, a tribute from Mick Channon

Show/hide article…

Half seven in the morning. Mick Channon is sitting at a desk in the office of his palatial West Ilsley stables. A force of nature, he’s been merrily swearing away for the last couple of hours.

A black and white picture hangs on the wall: Alan Ball on the left, Channon on the right. The pair are at Lawrie McMenemy’s Southampton. Both are laughing. There’s a lot of that when Channon is around.

Once a thoroughbred footballer and now a prolific trainer, the remarkable 68-year-old’s windmills are slowed by arthritis these days. But the mind is still fast, the tongue still sharp and the language incorrigible.

There is something missing, though. There has been for exactly 10 years now. Channon and Ball were one of the great double acts. They clicked over their shared love of football and horses, but it went deeper than that. Ball was practically family round these parts.

‘He was 61 when he died, but he wasn’t, he was 110! You know? In that sixty-odd years he never missed a beat,’ says Channon in that familiar Wiltshire twang.

‘Life was full on, whether you were racing, meeting for a drink, singing or dancing. If you were ever in his company, you had a laugh. He always had a story.’

It’s a trait Channon shares. He recalls a month spent with Ball in Australia which included a trip to the final Test of the 2006-07 Ashes. ‘I took a (hospitality) box for the cricket. I’ll never forget it. We lost 5-0. Freddie Flintoff was captain and I took a box in Sydney. Sydney Cricket Ground. F ** beautiful box. We had everyone there’, he enthuses, getting into his stride.

‘Me and Bally were staying with friends. We knew Flintoff and he said, “Can I come over with the missus, just to get away from it all? We’ve lost 5-0, I’d just like to come over for a quiet evening”.

‘Bally was sat there, “It’ll be great, we’ll get Freddie over,” he says. “What we must do Mick”, he says, “when he comes in we won’t mention cricket. Whatever we do. He’s had a terrible series and we’ve lost 5-0. We’ll just let him have a good time”.

‘So anyway, we’re there and it’s about 10 o’clock, we’ve all had a few drinks. Ah Freddie’s here! So he walks in. Want a beer Freddie? Give him a beer, put it in his hand. And Bally says, “What about that f * Pietersen. He ought to be f * shot!” I said to him, “Well that lasted a long time, didn’t it!” And we just started laughing.

‘We were out about four in the morning trying to get Flintoff and his missus a taxi to the other side of Sydney! But that was Bally. Great character. Great man. If he had something to say — I’m a bit like that myself.’

Ball was in the process of moving a stone’s throw from his best friend but suffered a fatal heart attack fighting a bonfire in his garden 10 years ago today.

The Channon clan — including his mother Betty, 95, wife Jill and oldest son Michael, an assistant trainer — were heartbroken. Mick, seldom one lost for words, could barely speak at the funeral at Winchester Cathedral.

‘It was a very sad day for everyone. I shall never forget the phone call from Michael, who was very close to Bally. Five in the morning, telling me. I couldn’t believe it.

‘He had half moved in! This would have been perfect for him. You can get anywhere from here, whether he was doing radio or football matches or he was doing his after-dinner speaking.

‘He loved Royal Ascot. He loved singing Frank Sinatra songs. I can see him now,’ Southampton’s all-time top scorer smiles as he tails off. A flat cap similar to the one which became Ball’s trademark sits on Channon’s desk. Before he screws it on his head, he glances upwards. ‘I wish I had them sideboards again!’

Channon has been here almost 18 years, buying the stables from the Queen. Situated in 650 acres of rolling Berkshire hills, Channon is king of all he surveys. ‘You’re on top of the world here, God’s country!’ he says.

Everyone knows Alan Ball. The 5ft 6in Lancastrian was the youngest member of Sir Alf Ramsey’s World Cup-winning squad, just 21 in 1966 — the year Channon made his Southampton debut. A fierce patriot, Ball won 72 caps for his country and racked up 743 league appearances for Blackpool, Everton, Arsenal, Bristol Rovers and Southampton.

‘He had a great football brain,’ says Channon. ‘Quick feet, quick brain. For a midfielder he scored a lot of goals. People just thought he was a running machine, especially in the early days with the World Cup and that. But he was a great footballer.’

In his first seven full seasons, Ball hit double figures. He was in the England side as Channon made his debut in October 1972, a 1-1 draw with Yugoslavia at Wembley. They clicked and their friendship deepened at The Dell when Ball joined Southampton in 1976.

‘We had some great cracks at Southampton, with England and racing,’ says Channon. ‘Ascot in our early footballing days was a total week’s partying. I struggle to make four or five days now but in them days you didn’t stop. You started on a Monday night at Windsor and then you went right through to Saturday evening!’

The pair were inseparable off the pitch and their careers share an odd symmetry: both had two spells at Southampton and would leave The Dell for Manchester City, Channon for £300,000 in 1977 and Ball as a manager in 1995.

Ball won the league with Everton in 1970 and was runner-up in the FA Cup (twice) and League Cup. Channon won the FA Cup with Southampton and the League Cup in 1985 with Norwich.

Months later Ball recruited Channon at 36 for his final season, on £500 a week. That Portsmouth team was known as the Gremlins: a hard-drinking, ill-disciplined bunch featuring characters like Micky Quinn, Noel Blake and Kevin Dillon.

When Ball lost his rag in the dressing room, Channon would be giggling in a corner. ‘He was a bloody good coach. He did great at Portsmouth, got them promoted on a shoestring. Franny Lee offered him the Man City job at Ascot and I said, “Bally, you need your friends more than you need money”.

‘But it was a great opportunity at City and Bally wanted to be at the sharp end of everything. If he made up his mind he was going to do something, he would give it his best shot.

‘He had that character and charisma that went with his ginger hair and his squeaky voice. He was just a very special person.’

And with that, the equally remarkable Channon gets back to the day job. Races to go to, horses to see. But today, as much as any day, the memories of his great friend are never far away.

What time and channel is Chelsea vs Southampton on? All you need to know

Show/hide article…

Chelsea welcome Southampton to the Bridge on Tuesday evening as they head into their final six games of the season with a four-point cushion over second-placed Spurs .

After dispatching Mauricio Pochettino’s side 4-2 in the FA Cup on Saturday to book their place in the final at the end of the season, the Blues will be even more confident of lasting the course .

And following their recent wobble in the Premier League - with defeats to Crystal Palace and Manchester United in their last four outings - Antonio Conte will be keen for his side to get back to winning ways against the Saints.

As for Claude Puel’s men, they have little to play for beyond pride at this stage as they’re sitting pretty in ninth.

The game kicks off at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday April 25th at 19:45pm.

You can watch it live on Sky Sports 1, with coverage set to starts 15 minutes before kick-off.

Gary Cahill is likely to return to action for the Blues after missing Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final win over Spurs with a bout of gastroenteritis.

Other than that, there are no new injuries or illnesses for Antonio Conte to worry about, as he welcomed grumbles among stars Eden Hazard and Diego Costa after they started on the bench at the weekend. Both are likely to start on Tuesday

He says there’s plenty left in the tank: “I have another day to decide our best 11 but they are in good condition and in good form and for sure tomorrow I hope to see a good performance from all my players.”

As for Saints, Sam McQueen is likely to miss the trip to Stamford Bridge, but Matt Targett and Charlie Austin are both back in training - although the pair are short for Tuesday’s game.

One player who will be available is Oriol Romeu. The former Chelsea man has served his two-match ban and is expected to start against the Blues.
