Arsenal ready to hijack Chelsea’s £50m transfer deal for Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Arsenal are ready to battle Chelsea for Virgil van Dijk

Chelsea have long been linked with the defender who is expected to leave St Mary’s this summer.

But the Gunners are also set to make a move for Holland star, who hasn’t played since January with a foot injury.

The Telegraph say Arsenal are ready to match the wages any other clubs offer Van Dijk.

Could Southampton decide the outcome of the Premier League’s top four?

Show/hide article…

Could Southampton decide the outcome of the Premier League’s top four?

There’s one team in the Premier League who could have the greatest say in how the top four shapes up at the end of the season - and that’s ninth-placed Southampton.

The Saints travel to Liverpool in May before entertaining Arsenal and Manchester United at St Mary’s, with all three sides vying for the top four alongside Manchester City.

And they may yet weigh in on the title race when facing league leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night - live on Sky Sports 1 HD.

In the hunt for a Champions League spot, Liverpool currently occupy third with 66 points, but have played two games more than Manchester City (64) and Manchester United (63).

If both Manchester clubs can win their matches in hand then Liverpool would drop out of the top four, while Arsenal (57 points) can close the gap having played three games fewer than the Merseyside club.

Southampton suffered Capital One Cup final agony against United back in February, and are now playing for little more than pride in the league as the season draws to a close.

With seven games left, Claude Puel’s side are in a personal battle for eighth with West Brom, but face four of the top seven sides in their run-in.

First up for Southampton are Chelsea. An upset at the Bridge could help Tottenham close the gap even further when they play Crystal Palace in Wednesday’s live Sky Sports match at Selhurst Park.

Southampton then have a May 7 date with Liverpool at Anfield on Nissan Super Sunday before hosting Arsenal three days later - and one week after that, United head to St Mary’s for another midweek clash, live on Sky Sports 1 HD.

Liverpool have failed to beat Southampton on the last four occasions, most recently losing both Capital One Cup semi-final legs 1-0 in January. Their matches at Anfield have always been tight affairs, with the Reds last winning by a two-goal advantage in 2002.

Meanwhile, Southampton are unbeaten in their last five league games at St Mary’s against Arsenal (W2 D3), but did suffer a heavy 5-0 defeat to the Gunners in the FA Cup earlier this year.

United - who could still seal a Champions League spot with Europa League glory - have a far greater record at Southampton, and are unbeaten in their last eight trips there (W7 D1) despite losing twice to the Saints at Old Trafford in the last four encounters.

But records and history only count for so much. With the top-four race taking a new twist every week, it has become impossible to predict. The Saints will undoubtedly have a say, but only time will tell us of the exact impact they have.

Puel hopes to stem the flow of summer exits

Show/hide article…

CLAUDE Puel is aiming to stem the usual flow of summer departures from Saints.

In the last three years, Saints have always lost key players and the early forecasts suggest this closed season will be no different.

For some months Virgil van Dijk has been linked with a big-money move away, while Dusan Tadic, Ryan Bertrand, Cedric Soares and Jay Rodriguez have also been talked about for possible exits.

Puel and Saints’ executive director of football Les Reed have also kept an eye on potential incomings to St Mary’s.

“We work all season with Les [Reed] to see different players and I hope, of course, we can keep the maximum of our good players [this summer],” Puel said.

“It’s important to continue this work [with this group of players] where we improve from the beginning of the season.

“It will be interesting and important to keep them to continue this work.

“It’s important also to take information about other players because it’s normal work for a club, but, this, is not just to talk about Virgil because he’s a Southampton player and our captain.”

Captain Van Dijk is at the centre of an almost continuous stream of speculation, with, if reports are to believed, almost every leading Premier League club after his signature, with a fee of around £50m touted.

“I cannot prevent all the newspaper journalists writing speculation about him,” Puel said.

“It’s the same thing, he’s has a long contract with Southampton, he’s our captain, he’s an important player for us and I wait for him for next season as he cannot play until the end of this season.”

Caceres debut not guaranteed

Show/hide article…

IT is not guaranteed that Martin Caceres will get his long-awaited Saints debut before the end of the season, according to Claude Puel.

The former Juventus and Barcelona centre-back arrived as a free agent in February, but has been restricted to just a couple of appearances for the under-23s.

Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens have formed a decent partnership at the back for Saints and Puel has been impressed by their performances.

That has left the 30-year-old without any first-team action, despite being brought in at high cost to bolster the ranks in injured Virgil van Dijk’s absence.

But with the schedule busying up, with Saints facing seven games in just over three weeks, Caceres could yet feature.

“Yes,” Puel replied when asked if Caceres might not play at all, “but it’s one game a week [at the moment] and we will see because we’ve got to play the two games that have been postponed and that will mean playing every three days until the end of the season.

“It’s always a competition and Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens can do good work together and are strong.

“It’s competition also, Caceres is a good player with a good training session and I think he’s going to have opportunities until the end of the season.

“But it’s all about competition and I’m happy with the work of Jack and Maya.”

Ahead of tonight’s Premier League game at Chelsea, Puel revealed that Jeremy Pied and Sam McQueen (both groin) are out injured, but should recover in time for the Hull game at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Meanwhile, long-term absentees Charlie Austin and Matt Targett will return to training with the squad this week.

“His first training session will be on Thursday,” Puel said about top-scorer Austin, who has been out since early December with a dislocated shoulder.

“It’s important he finds his level and his quality and perhaps he will play with the under-23s for their last game against Manchester City.

“We will see if he can play this game. It will be a good thing and a good opportunity for him.”
