Chelsea v Southampton

Show/hide article…

Chelsea captain Gary Cahill has returned to training after gastroenteritis and could be involved against Southampton on Tuesday.

Head coach Antonio Conte is likely to recall Diego Costa and Eden Hazard after leaving them out for the FA Cup semi-final win over Tottenham.

Southampton midfielder Oriel Romeu is available to face his former side after completing a two-match ban.

Sam McQueen is set to miss the fixture because of a minor groin strain.

Long-term absentees Matt Targett and Charlie Austin will return to training later this week.

Jonathan Pearce: "This is huge. If Chelsea follow up their FA Cup semi-final win with an emphatic victory they’ll hold their nerve and land the title.

"But this is a slippery one. They’ve found Southampton troublesome at home and the Saints have had 10 days to prepare.

"A defeat for the league leaders will open the door for Spurs.

"Chelsea were far too open in the thrilling semi-final. They also haven’t gone this long without a league clean sheet in nearly 21 years.

“Southampton may not have beaten a current top-six side all season but they’ve looked dangerous away recently. Tricky this for the leaders!”

Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte: "I have in my mind the starting 11 but tomorrow I want to check very well the physical consideration of every single player as our last game was an intense one and used energy.

"But we have trained very well this season and we have a lot of energy to face this type of situation.

“It is important for us to win and look at ourselves, but we all know that tomorrow it won’t be easy because Southampton is a very good team with a good coach and good players.”

Southampton manager Claude Puel on the importance of Oriol Romeu: "I think he’s not far off [N’Golo] Kante. He recovers the ball so well and is a technical player.

"He’s an important player for this team because he can do fantastic work to recover the ball and start the play. It’s difficult for us without him.

“We will see for the future, we are confident in him and, for me, he can look to getting in the selection with Spain, for example.”

N’Golo Kante: Oriol Romeu is ‘not far off’ Chelsea midfielder - Claude Puel

Show/hide article…

Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu is “not far off” Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year N’Golo Kante, says Saints boss Claude Puel.

Chelsea midfielder Kante, 26, was given the award on Sunday after winning a vote by his fellow players.

Romeu, 25, returns from a two-match ban to face former club Chelsea on Tuesday.

“Kante brings the same qualities as Oriol for us because he’s very consistent and in every game he gives good performances,” said Puel.

Spaniard Romeu joined Saints from the Blues for £5m in 2015, having previously played for Barcelona, but is yet to win a senior international cap.

“Without [Kante] for Chelsea it’s difficult and the same with Romeu, it’s difficult for us without him,” added Puel.

"I think he’s not far off Kante, he’s an important player for this team because he can do fantastic work to recover the ball and start the play.

“We are confident in him and, for me, he can look to getting in the selection with Spain.”

Saints can impress Van Dijk, Redmond vs. Chelsea and Prem big boys

Show/hide article…

It is the type of fixture list enough to give most midtable Premier League managers nightmares.

A trip to champions elect Chelsea, swiftly followed by back-to-back midweek home games with FA Cup finalists Arsenal and fellow Champions League hopefuls Manchester United, rounded off with a visit to Liverpool.

Rather than being daunted by the prospect of taking on four of the country’s so-called “big six” in quick succession at the end of a particularly grueling season thanks to their participation in the Europa League, Southampton boss Claude Puel says he is relishing the task.

Puel is shrewd enough to know that as well as his side having a major say on the destiny of the league title and who misses out in the fiercely contested battle for Europe, the mouthwatering run gives his side the chance to show they can compete among the elite – not just to the neutrals and Southampton supporters, but also to any of his players who may be contemplating their futures in the summer.

Virgil van Dijk, likely to be sidelined for the rest of the season with a knee injury, will be an interested spectator having been mooted as a target for just about every top club in Europe over the course of the season – including Chelsea.

Midfield enforcer Oriol Romeu, who Puel has compared to Chelsea’s PFA Player of the Year winner N’Golo Kante, has also been linked with a return to former club Barcelona. Ryan Bertrand, Euro 2016 champion Cedric Soares and the free-scoring Manolo Gabbiadini are three more Southampton stars sure to be earning rave reviews among the scouts who regularly swell the stands at St Mary’s.

If Southampton can go toe-to-toe with double-chasing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, it may help persuade the likes of Van Dijk and Bertrand – the two most likely to depart this summer – they can achieve their ambitions on the south coast.

Despite selling a host of their star players, the Southampton hierarchy have made no secret of their desire to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the clubs they will come up against between now and May.

In recent seasons, Southampton’s record against such stellar names has been good including winning at Old Trafford twice and at Stamford Bridge.

Puel, too, has enjoyed some success by knocking out Arsenal and Liverpool en route to the EFL Cup final but the Frenchman is still waiting for his first headline-grabbing league win against one of the juggernauts.

Given Southampton have little but pride to play for it is hard to see that changing, especially given the way Chelsea returned to form in their FA Cup semifinal triumph over Tottenham. But Puel genuinely believes that with key man Romeu back from suspension to patrol the midfield, his side can help spark the title race into life. Romeu’s attempts to cut the supply to one of Puel’s former Lille charges, Eden Hazard, is sure to be a feature central to the outcome, so too Gabbiadini’s battle with Chelsea’s three-man defence.

Puel will have noted how the Blues could not handle the pace and movement of Manchester United’s dynamic duo Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford in their 2-0 defeat to Jose Mourinho’s men. He will be hoping Gabbiadini’s intelligent runs and the blistering speed of Nathan Redmond will be equally as effective.

But above all, Puel expects his team to produce the kind of performance that shows Van Dijk and the rest of the football world that Southampton mean business.

For results in the next few weeks could have a massive bearing on what happens in the transfer window.

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

A win on Tuesday night would keep Saints hot on the heels of West Bromwich Albion, who currently occupy eighth in the table.

Claude Puel’s men are currently four points behind the Baggies but have two games in hand, of which the trip to Stamford Bridge is one.

However, fresh from their FA Cup semi-final victory over Tottenham, Chelsea will also be keen to pick up all three points and further extend their advantage at the top of the table.

TEAM NEWS

Southampton: Sam McQueen is set to miss the game, having suffered a minor groin injury. Oriol Romeu will be back in contention having served his two-match ban against West Bromwich Albion and Manchester City.

Chelsea: Gary Cahill is doubtful as he is still recovering from a virus, whilst Thibaut Courtois and Marcos Alonso returned from injury and illness against Tottenham. David Luiz requires ongoing knee treatment whilst Cesar Azpilicueta has played with a broken hand in recent weeks, though neither have been sidelined.

Chelsea v Southampton preview: Eden Hazard and Diego Costa set to return to starting XI

Show/hide article…

Eden Hazard and Diego Costa are both expected to start for Chelsea as they look to stretch their lead at the top of the Premier League when hosting Southampton on Tuesday night, live Sky Sports 1 HD.

The duo were named on the substitutes’ bench for Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final win over Tottenham, though Hazard did score in the 4-2 victory after both were introduced in the 61st minute.

Chelsea will look towards their influential attacking duo when tackling the Saints at Stamford Bridge - a win would hand the Blues a seven-point advantage before second-placed Tottenham head to Crystal Palace on Wednesday, which is also on Sky Sports 1 HD.

Antonio Conte got the desired response from his Chelsea side in the FA Cup victory over Spurs, having witnessed a lacklustre display in their previous league encounter at Old Trafford, where they lost 2-0 to Manchester United.

And Southampton boss Claude Puel is aware of the tough task ahead for his side, who currently sit ninth, three points behind West Brom but a staggering 17 points off Arsenal in seventh.

“They are a fantastic team that want to win the title, but for us as well it is important to take points,” Puel said.

"I am confident with my players. They work very well in training. It’s important to play our game and enjoy it.

“The best team in the Premier League is the one with the most consistency and, for the moment, that is Chelsea.”

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has recovered from gastroenteritis to return to training and could feature against Southampton.

Nathan Ake replaced Cahill and could continue in the starting XI if Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte opts not to risk his on-field captain, who took a full part in training on Sunday and Monday.

Matt Targett and Charlie Austin will return to training after recovering from respective hamstring and shoulder injuries but neither is available for the trip.

Sam McQueen is doubtful after sustaining a groin injury while Virgil van Dijk (foot) and Alex McCarthy (hamstring) remain absent.

Chelsea have lost just one of their last seven Premier League games at Stamford Bridge against Southampton (W3 D3 L1), though this was last time out (1-3 loss in October 2015).

The Blues have scored in 15 of their 17 Premier League home games against Southampton, only failing to score in April 1995 (0-2 defeat) and December 2002 (0-0 draw).

Costa has been directly involved in a goal in each of his last three Premier League appearances against Southampton (two goals, one assist).

Costa is now on a five-match run without a goal in the Premier League; his longest goalless streak in league competition since a six-game run between December 2012 and January 2013 in La Liga with Atletico de Madrid.

After losing just one Premier League match in six months between October 2016 and March 2017 (W19 D2 L1), Chelsea have already lost two games in April (W2 D0 L2).

The Blues haven’t lost three Premier League matches in the same month since October 2015 under Jose Mourinho - one of which was against Southampton at Stamford Bridge.

The only previous occasion that Conte has lost three top-flight league matches as a manager in the same month was in November 2009 for Atalanta.

Southampton have won three of their last four Premier League away matches (W3 D0 L1) - more than they had in their previous 12 league games on the road in 2016/17 (W2 D3 L7).

Chelsea have gone 10 Premier League games without keeping a clean sheet for the first time since December 1996 (13 games).

Hazard has been involved in 14 goals in his last 17 Premier League appearances at Stamford Bridge for Chelsea (11 goals, three assists).

I see Chelsea winning the title now. If they’d have been beaten by Tottenham in the FA Cup semi-final they’d have lost two big games on the trot and been heading into the game against Southampton low on confidence. Now they are back in a good place and after giving Hazard and Costa a bit of a rest I don’t see what happened last year happening again.

Saturday’s team selection was a gamble for Conte but what he was saying was: “If I win the FA Cup it’s a bonus but I’m here to win the Premier League.” And rightly so. It’s worked out perfectly for him as well because Hazard and Costa will be fresh.

Last year, Southampton’s 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge was one of the downfalls of Mourinho. I expect Chelsea to win this game and put severe pressure on Tottenham by going seven points clear again.

In the last couple of weeks Tottenham have played before Chelsea and I think they could have done with that being the case again. If they’d have been able to play Palace before and get the victory to be just one point behind, that’s a different kettle of fish.

Chelsea are just 2/5 with Sky Bet to get their title charge back on track with a win, as Southampton go up against odds of 13/2 for the victory and 7/2 just to draw. The Blues are even shorter odds at 1/7 to be crowned champions with Tottenham 5/1 to catch them, while Puel’s men are well odds-on for a top-half finish. Costa (3/1) is followed by Hazard (4/1) in the first goalscorer betting, while Manolo Gabbiadini is a 9/1 shot at the head of the Saints’ side of the market.

Conte says Saints’ Gabbiadini is ‘one of the best in the world’

Show/hide article…

Antonio Conte will warn his Chelsea team to beware the magical left foot of Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini.

Conte worked with Gabbiadini for two years when he was manager of Italy and the 25-year-old striker made a prolific start to his career in the Premier League.

Injury checked his progress but he is back in Claude Puel’s team and Saints are at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday as Chelsea attempt to move closer to the title.

‘Someone who doesn’t know him can’t understand the talent this player has,’ said Conte. 'He has a fantastic left foot, one of the best in the world.

'It’s amazing the way he kicks the ball. He is a really good player, a talented player and we must pay great attention to him.

'I know him very well from my period in charge of the national team. He didn’t play a lot with Napoli so it’s hard for an international manager to call up a player who is not playing regularly for his club, but I have great respect for him.

‘He’s a really good guy and his sister is a great striker in Italy for the national team, also. His family, they were born with a football.’

Show/hide article…

Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City want to snap up a new, quality centre-back this summer with Southampton’s Van Dijk seen as an ideal candidate.

Chelsea FC news: Antonio Conte warns Blues about ‘amazing’ Southampton hit-man Manolo Gabbiadini

Show/hide article…

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte believes Southampton hit-man Manolo Gabbiadini has a “fantastic left foot” and has warned the Blues to pay close attention to his fellow countryman on Tuesday night.

Conte’s Chelsea host the Saints at Stamford Bridge as they look to extend their lead over Tottenham at the top of the Premier League to seven points.

The Italian will see a familiar face in the Southampton squad in the shape of Gabbiadini, who was snapped up by the Saints from Napoli in January and has made a big splash in England.

“We worked together with the national team,” Conte revealed.

"I think he’s a really good player and a talented player.

"He has a fantastic left foot, I think one of the best in the world.

“The way he kicks the ball is amazing. If someone does not know him then he cannot understand the talent that this player has.”
