Pellegrino urges Southampton to keep fighting for points
Show/hide article…
(Reuters) - Southampton must continue to fight for every single point in the Premier League, manager Mauricio Pellegrino has said after their narrow 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
Moroccan midfielder Sofiane Boufal ran almost the length of the pitch to score a stunning 85th-minute goal at the St Mary’s Stadium to help the Saints post their third win of the season.
Goals have been in short supply for Southampton - Boufal’s wonder-strike was their eighth of the season - but Pellegrino said he was happy with the team’s style of play.
“In football in the Premier League you have to fight for every single point,” the Argentine manager said.
“We play a very difficult team and to beat them you have to do a lot of things. I am happy with how we play and we have to continue,” he added.
“To sustain and to win games you have to play well. You have to play better than the opponent… this is our job and I will repeat that the attitude of the players is right, is good.”
Southampton, who are 10th in the league with 12 points from nine games, travel to 12th-placed Brighton and Hove Albion in the league on Sunday.

Everton slump down to players not Koeman, says Michael Keane
Show/hide article…
Defender Michael Keane believes the players have let down Ronald Koeman as the Everton manager fights for his job.
The 5-2 mauling by Arsenal on Sunday has heaped more pressure on the Toffees boss, who has overseen just two wins in 13 matches in all competitions this season.
But Keane insists the players have to shoulder a great deal of responsibility.
‘The lads were devastated in the changing room. We knew it was a big game for the club,’ he told evertontv.
'The lads are low on confidence. I don’t think that was the case early on but as the goals went in it happened more and more.
'I think it is down to us at the end of the day, the manager can only do so much. We have 100 per cent belief in the manager - we have done all season - and we hope we can get this right for him.
'We feel like we have let him down as a bunch of players and we are working hard to sort it out.
‘It is not happening at the minute so we have to try different things to sort it out quickly.’
Koeman insists there can be no excuses for the club’s slide into the relegation zone.
The Dutchman said the game was finely balanced until Idrissa Gueye’s red card midway through the second half when Everton were 2-1 down, but there was no doubt the home side were lucky to be still in the game at that point after a string of good saves by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford as the Gunners dominated.
Seven league goals in nine matches tells part of the story, although the disjointed way the team have played after a £150million summer spending spree and rumours of dressing room unrest have also contributed.
Koeman will plough on regardless, with a Carabao Cup tie at Chelsea next up on Wednesday.
‘It is a really tough time. The team is not performing well, the position in the table is not the position Everton should be in. Everyone knows that,’ he told BBC Sport.
'We had a lot of expectation after last season and that makes the situation really difficult.
‘I think you can try to explain several reasons why but it is football; you need to win and there are no excuses.’
Majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri and chairman Bill Kenwright were at the game but Koeman does not know when he will speak to them next after they visited him at the club’s Finch Farm training complex on October 13 to express their ‘full, total support’.
‘I don’t know (when he will speak to them). Normally I have contact after every game, speak or text,’ he added.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane tops the Power Rankings
Show/hide article…
Tottenham’s Harry Kane has topped the Sky Sports Power Rankings for a third week running.
Kane opened the scoring against Liverpool with a cool finish from Kieran Trippier’s (No 5, up five places) chipped pass and netted another in the 56th minute during Spurs’ 4-1 win at Wembley on Sunday.
Manchester City trio Kevin De Bruyne (No 3, down two places), Leroy Sane (No 2, up three places) and Nicolas Otamendi (No 8, up 30 places) made the top 10, with the latter pair getting on the scoresheet in a 3-0 win over Burnley.
Everton’s Wayne Rooney (No 31, up 131 places) opened the scoring against Arsenal at Goodison Park with a long-range strike, reminiscent of his first goal for Everton against the Gunners 15 years ago.
However, Arsenal equalised through Nacho Monreal (No 4, up 10 places) before the break and Mesut Ozil (no 38, up 231 places) made it 2-1 early in the second half, before Idrissa Gueye was dismissed and Arsenal capitalised to win 5-2 - sealed by a solo Alexis Sanchez (No 7, up 47 places) effort.
Elsewhere, Stoke’s Mame Biram Diouf hit his third goal in as many games during a 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth and Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure struck his fourth of the season at Chelsea.
Kane, Pedro (No 18, up 146 places) and Ozil collected the most points from matchday nine, while substitute Michy Batshuayi soared 397 places up the table to No 56 after nodding Chelsea ahead at Stamford Bridge.
The Power Rankings methodology reflects a player’s performance over the last five matchdays by awarding points to players for 32 different stats.
Below, we present this week’s Power Rankings, your club’s top points scorer and the accumulative season rankings.
The Sky Sports Power Rankings will be updated every week during the season, so be sure to keep an eye on the big movers…

10 THINGS WE LEARNED: Mourinho should play Martial and Rashford
Show/hide article…
Manchester City opened up a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League as their rampant form in front of goal continued against Burnley on Saturday.
Manchester United fell to their first defeat of the season at Huddersfield, while Arsenal and Tottenham thrashed Everton and Liverpool as north London reigned supreme on Sunday.
Here, Sportsmail’s RALPH ELLIS shares 10 things he learned from the weekend’s action throughout the leagues…
- Jose Mourinho should rethink his apparent view that Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford can’t fit in the same team.
When the Manchester United manager brought Rashford on for Martial at half-time at Huddersfield it was the eighth time out of 14 matches in all competitions that one had replaced the other.
They have played together for just nine minutes in the Premier League (against Leicester), and 64 minutes against Burton in the EFL Cup.
In that short time Rashford has scored three goals and Martial one, so clearly they don’t always get in each other’s way.
- Harry Kane’s second goal against Liverpool might turn out to be significant if he is to win the Golden Boot for the third year in a row.
When the Tottenham and England star pounced on a rebound to volley home from close range it was only the second (of eight) he’s scored from less than 10 yards.
If Kane, 24, starts collecting some scruffy goals to go with the spectacular ones he already scores he could well threaten the record of 34 for a Premier League season currently shared by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer.
- Jordan Pickford spent most of last season on the hairy end of a coconut shy as Sunderland crashed to relegation, but any hopes he had of an easier life after his £25m move to Everton look seriously misplaced.
The 23-year-old had to make nine saves against Arsenal as well as picking the ball out of the net five times.
So far this season he’s faced 50 shots in nine matches – an average of 5.6 per game that’s only fractionally less than the 6.3 per match that came his way as the hapless Black Cats finished bottom.
- You can’t afford to take a moment’s rest if Chelsea win a corner – especially if Cesc Fabregas is anywhere near the ball.
The Spaniard’s quick thinking helped his side catch Watford off guard as while they were still debating the award he played the ball to Eden Hazard who set up Pedro’s early goal in the 4-2 win.
A week earlier he’d taken another quick corner, picking out Tiemoue Bakayoko to score at Crystal Palace.
- Mark Hughes needs to do some work on basic organisation from kick-offs because four times in as many games they have now conceded twice within five minutes.
Against Bournemouth following Andrew Surman’s strike Darren Fletcher played a sloppy pass almost straight from the kick-off that went out of play. Then nobody reacted as the throw-in resulted in Benik Afobe winning a penalty.
They were guilty of similar mini-collapses twice in the 7-2 thrashing at Manchester City and also in the 4-0 home defeat by Chelsea.
- Southampton made targeting Poland international Grzegorz Krychowiak one of the key tactics in their 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.
The 25-Year-old, whose loan move from PSG was one of the best coups of the summer transfer window, was given little time on the ball and was fouled four times.
The close attention meant Krychowiak got only 39 touches in the 90 minutes, the least he’s had in any game this season.
- Leicester’s next manager will have the good fortune to have a fully fit Vicente Iborra available to him.
The £12m signing from Sevilla missed the early part of the campaign with a hamstring injury and the lack of his defensive midfield ability didn’t help in the run that cost Craig Shakespeare his job.
The 29-year-old showed in the 2-1 win at Swansea that he can make a difference, making most forward half passes (20), competing in most duels (15) and winning most tackles (4).
- A lack of discipline might be a worry to stop Wolves building on their early-season surge to the top of the Championship.
Other managers in the league are already muttering about Molineux boss Nuno Espirito Santo and how his staff on the bench can be a bit excitable – there have been shoving matches in the technical areas against both Bristol City and Aston Villa.
Saturday’s bad tempered 3-2 win over Preston ended with a melee between players of both sides during stoppage time.
- Ahmed Kashi is making up for lost time at Charlton after missing 22 months with an achilles injury.
Five managers have come and gone at The Valley during the time the Algeria international was out, but he’s become a key fixture under Karl Robinson.
The 28-year-old, signed from Metz in 2015, is one of only three outfield players to have appeared in all of the 14 games that have taken the Addicks to fourth in League One following their 1-0 win at Bradford.
- Shaun Derry had his job title changed from ‘manager’ to ‘head coach’ by Cambridge in the summer and when his side took just seven points from their first six games many wondered if the former QPR, Leeds and Palace defender would survive.
Instead, at the start of next month Derry, 39, will celebrate two years in charge with his team quietly climbing the table – the 2-1 win over Chesterfield moved them to within two points of the play-offs.

Ref Watch: Alexandre Lacazette lucky to escape retrospective action?
Show/hide article…
Alexandre Lacazette could have been subjected to retrospective action had Ashley Williams been shown a second yellow for his rash challenge which failed to connect with the Arsenal striker, Dermot Gallagher said on Ref Watch.
Also up for discussion were Pedro’s controversial opener in Chelsea’s win over Watford, Harry Kane’s first goal against Liverpool and Yohan Cabaye’s lunge on DeAndre Yedlin.
Read on to see Dermot’s verdict on the weekend’s biggest incidents and if they were handled properly by the officials…
INCIDENT: Alexandre Lacazette goes to ground after appearing to be caught by a high challenge from Ashley Williams. Referee Craig Pawson opts not to issue the defender with a second yellow card.
DERMOT SAYS: “This is a great talking point. I watched this live and my immediate reaction after the incident was that Williams, who was on a yellow card, was in trouble. Then I saw the replay and thought ‘wow, that is not a foul’. It raises a question that if Williams had been sent off, would Lacazette be facing a two-match ban for deceiving the referee to get a player sent off? Of course, Williams’ suspension for the dismissal would have been erased and transferred to Lacazette, as you cannot have two players banned for the same offence.”
INCIDENT: Bernardo Silva goes down under a challenge from goalkeeper Nick Pope. Referee Roger East points straight to the spot but the decision splits opinion, with Clarets boss Sean Dyche accusing the Portuguese of going down too easily. Sergio Aguero converts the resulting penalty.
DERMOT’S VERDICT: Correct call, but not at first sight.
DERMOT SAYS: “I didn’t think it was a penalty at the time. I can understand why the referee gave it but the thing that swung it for me was when you see such minimal contact, as a referee I would have wondered why he went through the air so far. But when you see the replay, Pope’s knee catches the top of Silva’s foot so the referee will say he caught him, it’s a penalty. On another day it might not be. If you put 20 people in a room you would never get a majority decision on this, it would be split down the middle. That is the kind of decision it was.”
INCIDENT: Kieran Trippier’s lofted pass releases Harry Kane in behind the Liverpool defence. The Reds appeal vehemently for offside but the flag stays down as Kane rounds Simon Mignolet and fires Spurs into the lead at Wembley.
DERMOT SAYS: “Linesman Scott Ledger is very alert. As the ball goes in he’s in the perfect position, absolutely bang in line with the last defender and Kane, who is just onside, is allowed to play on correctly.”
INCIDENT: Chelsea win a corner right in front of the assistant referee, despite the ball appearing to come off Eden Hazard last. From the resulting set piece, Pedro opens the scoring.
DERMOT SAYS: “It should have been a goal kick. We’re not talking about a decision here, we’re talking about consequences of decisions. It was a momentary lapse in concentration, the linesman doesn’t see the ball strike Hazard, it should have been a goal kick.”
INCIDENT: Yohan Cabaye lunges into the back of DeAndre Yedlin with a late, forceful challenge. After a lengthy stoppage, referee Stuart Atwell issues a yellow card despite initially appearing to reach for his red card.
DERMOT SAYS: “My first reaction was that this warranted a red card. Ironically, I thought the referee’s reaction was the same, seeing as he’s run over so fast, put his hand to his top pocket and given the impression he’s going to brandish a red. However, after the tackle there was a long delay, and I wonder if the referee ran the incident through his mind, noted that Cabaye didn’t go whizzing through the air or go in two-footed so gave him the benefit of the doubt. My gut reaction was that it was a red card and Cabaye was very lucky to stay on the field.”
INCIDENT: Riyad Mahrez drifts in behind the Swansea defence, avoids straying offside and squares the ball for Shinji Okazaki, who doubles Leicester’s lead at the Liberty Stadium.
DERMOT SAYS: “I don’t think Mahrez is offside. This is an absolute top-drawer decision. The assistant’s starting position is so good that he is perfectly placed to see that Mahrez is level, and he knocks the ball back to Okazaki who cannot be offside because he is behind the ball.”
INCIDENT: After Ryan Shawcross gives away a penalty for his challenge on Benik Afobe, referee Lee Probert decides not to award Stoke a penalty of their own after Jese Rodriguez is brought to ground by Adam Smith.
DERMOT SAYS: “This is a penalty like Bournemouth’s one. The thing that convinces the referee not to give it is the theatrics from Jese. I’m not saying he shouldn’t go to ground, or that he wasn’t touched, but the way he went down sold it to the referee that Smith got the ball and not the man. You can clearly see Smith doesn’t play the ball and it’s a penalty.”
INCIDENT: Alan Browne leaves the field of play for a second bookable offence before referee Stephen Martin has the chance to show him a red card. The Preston midfielder re-emerges from the tunnel to be shown the red before making a second exit.
DERMOT SAYS: “The referee chose to make it public that he had given him a second yellow card. I wonder if he has to really, the cards are a communication system to show everyone who has been cautioned or sent off. It’s a second yellow, he started walking off, everyone in the ground knew he was going and it was a red card, so the referee should have just let him go.”
INCIDENT: Lucas Digne’s low cross sets up Gerard Deulofeu for Barca’s opener but the ball appeared to go out of play beforehand. The officials failed to spot it and the goal was allowed to stand.
DERMOT SAYS: “This simply should not have stood. This raises a good argument for goal-line technology being extended across the dead-ball line. It’s the wrong side for the assistant to spot, he’s got all the players the look through and, with Digne hooking it back quick, he doesn’t see it.”

Loan Watch: Reed tastes East Anglia derby success
Show/hide article…
James Maddison settled a tight contest when he found space on the edge of the area on the hour mark, before showing composure to leave Bartosz Bialkowski rooted to the spot.
Reed played the full 90 minutes, as Daniel Farke’s men sealed an impressive fourth consecutive away win in the Championship and extended their unbeaten league run over their rivals to nine games.
Olufela Olomola played 79 minutes for Yeovil Town against Barnet, before being replaced by Sam Surridge.
The Glovers earned a point in the 1-1 draw thanks to Otis Khan’s late equaliser, after Simeon Akinola had given the hosts the lead in the first-half.
Ryan Seager was a late substitute for MK Dons in their exhilarating 4-4 draw with Oldham in League One.
The forward was introduced in the 69th minute, with Dons trailing 4-2 at home, playing a significant role in their recovery.
After Aidan Nesbitt made it 4-3 with eight minutes to go, Seager was heavily involved in the 89th-minute equaliser, with his initial effort hitting the bar before Ed Upson prodded home the rebound.
Elsewhere, Sam Gallagher watched on as Birmingham City were defeated 2-0 at Millwall.
In the Scottish Championship, Harry Lewis also suffered a 2-0 defeat to Inverness Caledonian Thistle with loan club Dundee United.
