Davis: Win will give us confidence in front of goal

Show/hide article…

Steven Davis is hopeful Southampton’s return to winning ways will give them the confidence boost they need to be more clinical in front of goal.

Saints dominated for long periods against West Brom at St Mary’s, but would have to wait until the 85th minute to make the breakthrough after several chances went unconverted.

Eventually it was substitute Sofiane Boufal who made the difference with a sublime individual goal to break the visitors’ resistance.

“We’ve found goals to hard come by of late, but the goal was worthy of winning any match,” Davis said.

“We need to be a little bit more clinical when we get into those positions, but overall it was a good performance.

“We controlled the game for large parts and luckily we got the winner in the end.

we need to be a little bit more clinical when we get into those positions, but overall it was a good performance.

“Whenever you’re not scoring too many goals you snap at chances or you think too much about them.

“When you’re scoring freely it just comes a little bit more naturally.

“That will do our confidence the world of good.”

Harry Kane and Alexis Sanchez in the latest Fantasy Team of the Week

Harry Kane and Alexis Sanchez in the latest Fantasy Team of the Week

Harry Kane and Alexis Sanchez lead the latest Team of the Week after firing their sides to impressive Super Sunday victories.

Sanchez returned to Arsenal’s starting line-up for their 5-2 victory over Everton, while there was no change in the late kick-off as Kane continued his stunning form with another double in Tottenham’s 4-1 win over Liverpool.

Based on the Opta data which powers Dribble, the new single-matchday fantasy football game, we take a look at the weekend’s best individual performances - brace yourself for some surprise inclusions!

Everton may have conceded the most goals over the weekend but Pickford managed to rack up more points than any other goalkeeper thanks to a season-high nine saves, worth six points apiece, far more than the 10 available for a clean sheet.

Otamendi was instrumental as Manchester City registered their fifth clean sheet of the season, and he scored their second goal against a resilient Burnley side while he also completed 98 passes.

Zabaleta makes the team despite giving away a penalty against Brighton. The right-back won a weekend high of eight duels, completed four key passes and won five tackles in West Ham’s 3-0 defeat at the London Stadium.

Sofiane Boufal’s 85-minute winner for Southampton over West Brom was well worth the wait, but the platform for the victory was provided by another solid defensive display with Yoshida, who won seven defensive duels, helping the Saints record a fourth clean sheet of the season.

Monreal kick-started Arsenal’s revival at Goodison Park, equalising Wayne Rooney’s opener. The Spaniard went on to complete 72 passes and won three tackles and five duels.

Ozil proved his value again after being restored to Arsene Wenger’s starting line-up, making eight key passes, scoring one and setting up another against the Toffees.

However, team-mate Ramsey picked up the most points on Super Sunday as he had a joint weekend-high of seven shots, scoring once, while producing four key passes along with an assist in the Goodison Park goal-fest.

Alli’s form has been questioned this season but his display against Liverpool answered his critics. The England international, deployed in a deeper role against the Reds, fired Spurs into a 3-1 lead just before half-time, and went on to win eight duels and complete two key passes.

Sane just edges out team-mate Kevin De Bruyne thanks to a goal, an assist and also contributing another two key passes in Manchester City’s 11th successive victory in all competitions.

Like Ramsey, Sanchez was impressive against the Toffees, unleashing seven shots, eventually finding the net in the fourth minute of added-time, while also providing an assist and winning 10 duels.

It will come as no surprise that Kane matched the week-high tally of seven shots as he scored twice against Liverpool. He also contributed with an assist as Spurs hammered Liverpool at Wembley.

Liverpool backed to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk in January

Show/hide article…

Liverpool to go back in for Virgil van Dijk in January, says Stuart Pearce

Liverpool were desperate to bring van Dijk to Anfield in the summer.

But Southampton stood firm and refused to sell the Holland international, despite him handing in a transfer request at St Mary’s.

The Reds’ defence has come under heavy criticism this season, with last night’s 4-1 defeat at Tottenham highlighting their problems at the back.

And Pearce reckons Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will renew his interest in Van Dijk when the transfer window reopens in January as he looks to strengthen his back line.

Tadic relishing Amex space to attack

Show/hide article…

DUSAN Tadic is relishing the space to attack away at Brighton this Sunday as Saints look to build on their 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.

Six of Saints’ first nine games in the Premier League have been at St Mary’s.

But they often found it hard to make home advantage count, winning just two in front of their own fans this campaign.

With opponents often going defensive at St Mary’s and Mauricio Pellegrino’s men regularly struggling to break down compact visitors, Tadic is looking forward to more breathing space at the Amex on Sunday.

“It is always easier to attack when you have more space because these kind of teams are really strong and powerful,” he said about the frustrations Saints have had at home.

“They defend with everyone back and it’s not easy to break them down.”

The Serbia international was eager for Saints to play “faster” and be more “aggressive” to help them break down stubborn opponents.

The 28-year-old believes Saints’ mentality has now turned a corner after some frustrating performances in the opening run of matches in the Premier League season.

“I think we should be positive about our performances,” he said. “I think what is different now is our aggression. From the first moment, we want to score goals.”

“Yes, we tried to do that and to play a quick game.

“We attack and get a corner and take it quick and the same with a throw-in. We tried to be much quicker and score goals. The tempo was there.”

Tadic was relieved Saints got a vital victory against West Brom, which many hope will be the catalyst to help Saints launch themselves up the top-flight.

“I think it is very important and also important that we finally got that bit of luck,” Tadic said.

“We need to do that [climb the table] because we believe in our qualities and we need to take as many points as possible.

“It is a bit disappointing that we didn’t score the goal to open the game as that would have given us more space because the beginning of the game is always hard,” he added.

“But, we created a few chances and it’s like that. I think we will have in other games, maybe we will open games before and then score more goals.”
