Southampton match-winner Boufal hopes he can build on his wonder goal
Show/hide article…
Sofiane Boufal vowed to build on his wonder goal against West Brom and cement a place in the Southampton team.
The Moroccan midfielder has been mainly limited to a substitute role this season but he made the most of his latest cameo against the Baggies.
Four minutes after coming off the bench on Saturday, Boufal embarked on a mazy run from deep inside his own half.
He beat six players, leaving three on their backsides, before finishing into the corner to secure a 1-0 victory for Saints.
‘When I went past one or two players I felt confident, and the rest of it just felt natural,’ Boufal told the club website.
'I’m so happy with the goal - for my family and all the people who have helped me in the difficult moments.
'Sometimes you have good moments and sometimes you have bad moments, but the most important thing is to be confident in yourself.
'I hope the best is still to come. I hope this goal will help me for the future with Southampton.
‘I just want to think about the future and work hard. It’s very important to work harder in the difficult moments.’
As well as a seventh game without a win, Albion boss Tony Pulis has an injury crisis to contend with after Jonny Evans, Gareth Barry and Craig Dawson limped off.
Pulis is awaiting the results of scans on the trio with defender Dawson the main worry.
‘Craig’s problem is the one that concerns me most,’ said Pulis.
'His knee was locked but we’re not sure whether that’s from a kick or something muscular.
'We know for sure that Craig wouldn’t come off unless he was in trouble.
‘Jonny felt his groin but hopefully that will not prove too serious and we have got to it in time.’
Midfielder Barry went off at half-time with a back problem, and Pulis added: ‘We were a bit worried that might be connected to a hamstring issue and so it was best for Gareth to come off.’

Rickie Lambert would ‘love’ to see Mauricio Pochettino manage England
Show/hide article…
Former Southampton striker Rickie Lambert says he would love to see Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino manage England in the future.
Lambert, who retired from football at the age of 35 earlier this month, played under Pochettino for 18 months after the Argentine took charge of Southampton in January 2013.
Pochettino went on to take the Tottenham job in May 2014, while Lambert moved to Liverpool that same summer after featuring at the World Cup for England.
And speaking to Ben and Kammy on Goals on Sunday, Lambert said Pochettino would be a popular choice to one day take the helm as England manager.
“He’s brilliant,” said Lambert. "His man-management is spot on. Technically, he’s brilliant.
"I would love him to be an England manager, if there’s any chance that the FA could get him in the future, they should jump at it, without a doubt.
“The lads would love playing for him, everyone who has ever played under him, especially the British lads, love him.”
When asked what made Pochettino the manager he is, Lambert described the 45-year-old a meticulous coach, who would seek improvements in all aspects of your game.
“He is the best manager I’ve played for. His attention to detail is second to none. He’s one of few managers that wants to improve your game - every single player in the team,” Lambert added.
"He sees the weakness and he improves it, him and his team. With me, he improved everything. Movement off the ball, finishing.
“What I used to struggle on mostly was with the ball coming from the side, it’s one of the hardest techniques, especially with my left foot. After training every day he’d have me practising that technique.”

The Morocco international produced an entry for the Premier League’s goal of the season, running three-quarters of the St Mary’s pitch and beating man after man, before curling a sublime low shot into the bottom corner in the 85th minute to give Saints a vital 1-0 win.
“For substitutes, the most important is when you come on you help your teammates, whether you have one minute, two minutes, ten minutes, 20 minutes – the most important is to do the best to help your teammates and it’s what I did when I came on, and in the last weeks against Stoke City and Newcastle,” said Boufal.
“I am so determined because I want to help my teammates and to win. The most important is to show on the pitch what you can do and how you can help your teammates.”
Boufal is hopeful that the moment of magic he produced will not only make a big difference to his season, but also the team’s.
“The most important is the team, and we won, we took three points,” he said. "This game is very important for the future, and I hope it will help us for the next game, at Brighton, and for the future ones.
“I just want to think about the future. I work hard. Sometimes in football you have good moments and sometimes you have bad moments, but the most important is to be confident about yourself. I am happy, because I hope this goal helps me for the future with Southampton.”

Sofiane Boufal’s wonder goal no guarantee of a start next week
Show/hide article…
Once the brilliance of Sofiane Boufal’s virtuoso goal began to sink in for Southampton’s long-suffering home fans, attentions will turn to his somewhat bellicose celebration.
Of course, it is easy to read too much into body language, particularly at a moment of such excitement, but the Moroccan was intent on racing to the touchline and thumping his chest in the face of his manager, Mauricio Pellegrino.
So far, the Argentine has been reluctant to use Boufal as anything other than a bit-part player, but with Southampton scoring only seven goals at home before Boufal’s magnificent 85th-minute effort, the former Lille player cannot do much more to justify a starting berth.
Pellegrino, while calling the goal “the most beautiful so far this season,” was restrained in heaping too much praise on the man signed for £16 million last year. It is only the third goal of Boufal’s stuttering Premier League career to date, but all have been spectacular.
West Brom have also been goal-shy this season and are winless since August. They barely encroached into Southampton territory but had once good chance to score through former Saints striker Jay Rodriguez.

THE VERDICT: Boufal stunner can be Saints launchpad
Show/hide article…
It’s amazing in sport how things can turn on one magic moment.
We have seen it across sports, team and individual, for all of time.
When backs are to the wall, when it seems like things are going against you, something, seemingly out of nowhere, can happen and a fuse is lit.
It even happens to the greatest of the great. Take the US Open tennis semi-final of 2011, where Roger Federer seemed ready to wrap up a victory over Novak Djokovic.
At match point down it seemed Djokovic had all but given up. He, almost lazily it appeared, flicked a return of serve that beat Federer and stunned the watching world with its nonchalant brilliance.
Was it lucky? A moment of genius? Who knows, but it didn’t matter, it had the effect of turning a match entirely on its head, and Djokovic went on to knockout the greatest ever, and eventually claim the title for the first time.
Djokovic also credited the moment for changing his attitude, making him brave enough to keep trying, keep attacking, being less cautious, even in vital moments, and his career sky rocketed.
Maybe Sofiane Boufal has produced just such a moment for Saints.
Football may well be a team sport, but after another 85 minutes of huffing and puffing for Saints as a unit, it took a late individual effort from the sub, just minutes after he had been brought off the bench, to turn things around.
A moment that lit up the match could prove to be a turning point in the season.
Make no mistake, this was a victory Saints were desperate for.
They thoroughly deserved it given West Brom’s lack of ambition and the chances that Saints created, and again squandered, but it really didn’t seem as if it were coming.
Another day of frustration looked to be on the cards. Another goalless day at the St Mary’s office. Another winnable home game about to drift off with points slipping through the fingers.
Playing later in the day also added a sense of urgency. Results elsewhere meant Saints were just starting to look over their shoulders.
And given the team and manager know as well as anybody that they have had a very kind fixture list thus far, and after this run of four matches they have to play all of the top six before the end of the year, they needed points on the board.
It suddenly felt less important for the sake of upwards momentum and more vital for warding off fears.
With a third win of the campaign secured, and a more comfortable league position as a result, Saints can look ahead with optimism again.
With a trip to Brighton up next and then Burnley at home to come before the international break when things get far more taxing, Saints must feel they can put a run together once more.
And it is all thanks a piece of individual brilliance.
Saints would have been kicking themselves had they not won this game.
West Brom played exactly as had been expected. They were well organised, well drilled, got pretty much everybody behind the ball and were very hard to break down.
They were running the clock down from the start and barely launched an attack worthy of the name.
For all that though Saints’ pressure did pay off as they crafted a few chances, which weren’t taken.
Saints almost got a bit of early luck as Ryan Bertrand’s free kick flicked off the head of Jonny Evans in the wall and hit the post before three more decent first half Saints openings.
West Brom failed to clear a corner and the ball fell to Oriol Romeu in the middle of the six yard box, but he skewed wide on the spin.
On a very rare occasion that the Baggies committed a few players forward, Manolo Gabbiadini, playing as the main striker for this game with Shane Long out on the right, quickly counter attacked down the left.
He found Long running into space at the near post with a low cross. The striker opted to let the ball run across his body and attempt to finish with his right foot, but ended up missing the target.
Maya Yoshida did work Ben Foster with a downward header but the Baggies keeper was able to turn it wide.
West Brom made a tactical change early in the second period, playing with five at the back and two strikers, and it bought them more of a foothold in the game.
After Fraser Forster had saved from Kieran Gibbs with West Brom’s first effort on target, former Saints star Jay Rodriguez had the Baggies’ best chance, but put wide a half volley after being played in by a long ball.
Tadic saw his effort smothered by Foster before appealing unsuccessfully for a penalty as Pellegrino started to ring the changes, which proved effective in Saints snatching back control of the game and, ultimately, winning.
Juts three minutes after Sofiane Boufal was introduced came the decisive moment.
With just five minutes remaining Boufal picked up the ball not far outside his own penalty area. He ran past two players and pressed into the West Brom half.
Aided by some sloppy defending, including a comedy moment where two West Brom players took each other out, he continued his run. As he got to the edge of the box Boufal cut inside onto his right foot and measured a perfect finish into the bottom corner.
It was a truly breath taking goal.
It was one that proved a point for him individually but, more significantly, gives Saints the chance to make it a pivotal moment in their season.

Sofiane Boufal stakes claim at Southampton after wondergoal against West Brom
Show/hide article…
Boufal has flopped since joining last year in a then club record £16m deal from French side Lille.
But the mercurial Moroccan came off the bench with 10 minutes to go and lit up St Mary’s with a goal-of-the-season contender - which started in his own half - to banish West Brom to yet another away defeat.
Defender Maya Yoshida said: “Sometimes he’s been on the bench, sometimes out of the squad because we have so many players.
“It’s not just the amount of centre-backs, but every position.
“I know he has struggled through the season so far but we have good competition between the players so I am very happy for him.
“I am really happy that someone came in and showed that quality. If that kind of player has space they can do what they want.”

SOFIANE Boufal admitted he is “so hungry” for success at Saints after his sensational individual goal in the 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion at St Mary’s.
The Moroccan came on as a late substitute and four minutes later netted a contender for goal of the season, weaving through the Baggies defence and slotting neatly in to the bottom corner.
The 24-year-old said: "My first Premier League goal of this season, yes, it’s very special - the most important thing is we take three points - more important than my goal.
“I scored one in France I remember, but I am so happy with this goal. I am so hungry. The most important thing is to show the manager on the pitch I can play with this team.”
Dusan Tadic was full of praise for Boufal, who netted his first goal in 23 Premier League games as Saints sealed their first triumph in three matches in the Premier League.
Tadic said: “It was an amazing goal. He scored a very nice goal and sometimes it is like that.
“You score a goal like that and not from clear chances but what is most important is that we took the three points. It was a great goal.”
The Serbian playmaker was delighted with a much-needed triumph.
“Every player in our club has some kind of quality and some games it is not possible to show, and then in some games it is possible to show. Most importantly we won as a team,” he said.
“I think every quality is important. We have 20-25 players and every player is important for the team and that’s it.”

The message Boufal sends to his Saints team-mates
Show/hide article…
MAYA Yoshida believes Sofiane Boufal’s stunning solo strike in the 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion will send “a message” to Saints’ other attacking players that they must also step up in front of goal.
The Morocco international scored his first goal in 23 Premier League games in spectacular fashion, cutting through the Baggies defence from inside the Saints half.
The 24-year-old left everyone in his wake – including Allan Nyom and Craig Dawson who collided and fell over each other as they chased substitute Boufal, who slotted home the 85th-minute winner four minutes after coming on.
“If the guy from the bench came on and has shown that quality it is a message to other players,” said Yoshida.
"Their feeling will be ‘I have to score’, ‘I have to show something like this’.
“That’s the kind of competition we needed and he’s shown it today.”
The Japan international revealed that he chatted with Mauricio Pellegrino in training during the week, with the 46-year-old boss already planning to introduce Nathan Redmond and Boufal late in the game “to make the difference”.
“That was the plan of the manager because I spoke to him before the game and after a training session,” he said.
"We play attacking football and dominate and we were going to put Redders (Nathan Redmond) and Sofiane (Boufal) on to make the difference.
"After the second half it became open and there were so many spaces in the midfield. If that kind of player has space they can do what they want.
"That’s what the manager wanted and Sofiane showed his quality.
“I know he was struggled through the season so far but we have good competition between the players so I am very happy for him.”
Boufal has started just once in nine Premier League matches and has often had to make-do with coming off the bench late on.
“Sometimes he’s been on the bench, sometimes out of the squad because we have so many players,” Yoshida said.
"It’s not just the amount of centre-backs, but every position.
“I am really happy that someone came in and showed that quality.”
After conceding two goals in the 2-2 draw against Newcastle United last week, the 29-year-old centre-back admitted there had been discussions in the Saints camp this week about the defence.
“We had a meeting this week and the manager spoke about a pyramid and if we have no base there’s no point in building anything at the top,” he said.
“That’s true we need to make a really, really solid basement on the floor and defensively we are building a very good base but now we need to build the attack now as well.”
They achieved that against West Brom, tallying their fourth clean sheet of the campaign – albeit against a Baggies side showing scarcely any attacking intent whatsoever.
Yoshida was delighted to seal a first win in three Premier League matches in this match, but was critical of his own performance.
“After the last game we needed to get some points, as many as we can, before the next international break, because after the international break we will have a really tough run of fixtures,” said Yoshida.
"I am happy but individually I need to improve a lot in the small details, especially if we play against the bigger teams we might get punished.
“Individually I need to improve and as a team we need to improve about the attacking side. We need to keep keeping clean sheets. Not just in one game, that’s not enough.”
He continued: "We had a lot of chances today and I feel we need to score as well. I want to improve in the small things. Instead of clearances I can get my ball control and start again, something like this.
"I want to improve more and more. I think these are good things because I keep playing every week and I feel then I can do more and better.
“That’s a really good feeling as a player to play constantly and pushing myself a lot and harder and harder. That’s a great situation physically and mentally.”

Boufal’s beauty has West Brom boss Tony Pulis fearing the drop
Show/hide article…
Against a goal-shy Southampton side that had only won one of their last 10 league games at St Mary’s Stadium, Tony Pulis missed a trick.
West Brom played as if they wanted to try to avoid being beaten rather than register a win. It backfired and the Baggies have now won just twice in their last 18 Premier League games.
Sacking season is well underway, with Slaven Bilic and Ronald Koeman among those whose backs are against the wall, and Pulis is at risk of joining the list of managers in peril.
Three of their next four fixtures are against Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham. The odd one out is away at Huddersfield, who are fresh from beating Manchester United.
Those two wins in 18 could become two in 22 by the time Newcastle visit on November 28. This is relegation form for West Brom.
‘If you take the top six out, the difference between the bottom and the rest, it looks as if it is going to be as tough a Premier League as we’ve had for years,’ Pulis admitted.
‘Sometimes you get something where you’re not expecting it. I’ve been at this football club and gone to Manchester United and won there, so we will take every game as it comes.’
As for Southampton, they left it late but their supporters and manager Mauricio Pellegrino felt this win was deserved after their positive play.
It took a late winner from Sofiane Boufal — their £16million signing from Lille in the summer of 2016 who has a habit of scoring screamers.
This time, Boufal sprinted 70 yards and beat five West Brom players to score in the 85th minute — but his celebration was criticised.
The 24-year-old substitute, who had only been on the field for four minutes, ran to Pellegrino and screamed at his manager in apparent protest at his lack of starts.
Pellegrino simply said it was ‘beautiful’ afterwards and Boufal’s team-mate Dusan Tadic added: 'It was an amazing goal.
‘Sometimes it is like that. You score a goal like that and not from clear chances but what is most important is that we took the three points.’
