West Ham sign Fonte from Southampton

Show/hide article…

West Ham United have announced the signing of Jose Fonte from Southampton for a fee of £8million.

Fonte has agreed a deal until June 2019 with an option for another season at the London Stadium after seven years at Southampton, whom he helped to back-to-back promotions from Sky Bet League One to the Premier League.

The 33-year-old, who is Slaven Bilic’s first signing of the January transfer window, has made 154 career appearances in the top flight, scoring seven goals.

“I told the manager in conversations that we want to win and we want to win trophies,” Fonte told whufc.com. “The ambition is big and we need to aim high.”

Fonte will not play in Saturday’s trip to Middlesbrough but could make his West Ham debut at home to Manchester City on 1 February.

Davis to miss Leicester clash

Show/hide article…

Steven Davis will be missing from the Saints team to face Leicester tomorrow.

Claude Puel had hoped the Northern Ireland skipper would be back for the FA Cup third round replay against Norwich in midweek after being forced to sit out the defeat at Burnley having picked up a knock.

However, he was not fit enough to face the Canaries, and has now been ruled out for the clash with Leicester.

Long term injury absentees Alex McCarthy, Matt Targett, Charlie Austin and Jake Hesketh remain sidelined, while Sofiane Boufal is recovering from the problem that forced him to miss the Africa Cup of Nations.

Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Bertrand were not risked against Norwich and Puel said: “Yes he (van Dijk) came back in the team after a little pain and sometimes it is important for him to recover.

“He has played a lot of games and he is an important player for us. It is a good thing to have him fit in the team.”

Chopping and changing: How many bosses has each club had during the Premier League era?

Show/hide article…

MOST Premier League clubs are notorious for firing their managers, but who has chopped and changed the most?

Arsene Wenger is comfortably the longest serving gaffer in the division, and has been at the helm of Arsenal for over 20 years now.

Since his old foe Sir Alex Ferguson left Manchester United, the Red Devils have seen three bosses in the hotseat - but many clubs have hired and fired a lot more than that.

In cases where the same manager has returned for another stint, we have counted them twice.

Match Preview: Saints vs Leicester

Show/hide article…

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

For Southampton, who start the weekend in 13th, it is an opportunity to bounce back from a run of four successive Premier League defeats and potentially to return to the top half of the division.

Leicester, meanwhile, are two places and three points worse off, and are searching for a first top-flight away win of the season.

A win for the Premier League champions could lift them above Saints, depending on the margin.

TEAM NEWS

Southampton: Midfielder Steven Davis remains out injured, but defenders Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Bertrand are expected to come back into contention after missing the midweek FA Cup win over Norwich City with slight knocks.

Leicester City: Striker Leo Ulloa will be assessed ahead of the game, as he recovers from a thigh problem. The Foxes will definitely be without Riyad Mahrez, Islam Slimani and Daniel Amartey, who are away on Africa Cup of Nations duty.

Southampton boss Claude Puel says winning league games is more important than cup success

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Claude Puel says winning league games is more important than cup success

Southampton manager Claude Puel insists getting back to winning form in the Premier League is more important than any cup success.

Saints entertain Leicester on Sunday, live on Sky Sports, having lost their past four league matches against Tottenham, West Brom, Everton and Burnley.

However, during this run Southampton have knocked Norwich out of the FA Cup after a replay and hold a 1-0 first-leg advantage over Liverpool in the semi-final of the EFL Cup ahead of next week’s return at Anfield.

Although Saints have not reached a cup final since 2003, Puel has prioritised victory over Leicester.

“The most important game is Leicester,” Puel said. "It is important to stop this situation; the losses in the Premier League.

"We need a good result and points now to be sufficient. After, the cup is a good thing. It is an exciting game and we will have time to consider this game.

“The most important game is Leicester. After, to play Liverpool in the semi-final is another thing.”

Puel is looking to build on Wednesday’s 1-0 victory over Norwich, and he reiterated league results take precedence.

“It is very important for us,” the Frenchman said. "It is important to find the solution and keep the attitude up from the last game because it was very interesting.

"Now it is important to find this efficiency and to take points with all the support of the fans. It is important now to find the solution in a game between two teams in difficulties.

“It is an important game; the maturity and experience of the game will be important without thinking of other games in other competitions.”
