Tadić: We need to beat them

Show/hide article…

Saints are looking to end a run of four defeats in the Premier League, while Claudio Ranieri’s reigning champions have endured a mixed campaign themselves.

And Tadić knows both will be gunning for all three points to try and start to climb the table again, with the visitors targeting their first away success since April 2016.

He said: “Last season they had an amazing year and they probably know it will be tough as they also have the Champions League.

“It will be a difficult match because they need the points and it will be nice to watch because both teams will really push and hopefully it’s us who gets the points.

“We need to show our fans we can beat everyone at home and we need to beat them.”

Fonte says family connections with West Ham and London played part in £8m move

Show/hide article…

New signing Jose Fonte said it ‘made sense’ to join West Ham and that he cannot wait to get started.

The 33-year-old completed his £8million move from Southampton on Friday night, as manager Slaven Bilic made his first move in the January transfer window.

Fonte, who won the Euro 2016 championships with Portugal last month, said that his family connections with the Hammers made it the right move for him.

Fonte told West Ham’s official website: “I signed for West Ham because they are a great club and a very big club. They have a lot of fans and I have known for a number of years how passionate they are.”

Fonte made 288 appearances in his seven-year spell at St Mary’s and was the last remaining member of the Saints side that rose from League One to the Premier League.

The centre-back was linked with a number of clubs following Portugal’s triumph in France but has opted to move to London Stadium and admitted Hammers boss Slaven Bilic played a big part in his decision.

He added: "The manager was also a very big influence. I thought that he really wanted me and that he sold me the project and the ambition of the club.

"I also have part of my family living in London and they are big West Ham fans. It just made sense for me at this stage to join West Ham.

"It is a new challenge and a new beginning and I am looking forward to it.

"With the way that West Ham is going we can only look to be challenging in the top eight.

“West Ham are a massive club and it is an exciting challenge and it should be for everyone. We all need to get together and start working.”

The Hammers confirmed Fonte will not be available for Saturday’s trip to Middlesbrough.

West Ham seal £8m signing of Jose Fonte as Southampton captain leaves

Show/hide article…

West Ham have completed the signing of Southampton defender Jose Fonte for a fee of £8m.

The 33-year-old, who won Euro 2016 with Portugal last summer, has put pen to paper on a two-and-half-year deal, with the option of a further year.

Fonte told West Ham’s official website: “I signed for West Ham because they are a great club and a very big club. They have a lot of fans and I have known for a number of years how passionate they are.”

Ranieri: We must concentrate and be aggressive

Show/hide article…

Leicester City boss Claudio Ranieri has told his players to be at their best against Southampton if they are to win their first league game away from home this season on Sunday.

The reigning champions head to St Mary’s without a victory on the road in the league all season as they prepare for the first of three away trips in ten days, and admits it will be tough for his side at St Mary’s if the first meeting between the two teams earlier in the campaign is anything to go by.

The Foxes have notched wins in both the Champions League and the Emirates FA Cup away from the King Power Stadium, and Ranieri says his side must “change our mood” against Claude Puel’s men who held Leicester to a goalless draw back in October.

“They keep possession of the ball very well, they move the ball quickly. I remember the first game here, they deserved to win, we drew, but they deserved to win.

“We must be very, very concentrated and very aggressive.

“Last season we won so many matches away and this season not, but we are the same, and sooner or later we’ll start to win away.”

Having trialled a 3-5-2 formation in last weekend’s home defeat to Chelsea, Ranieri is likely to revert to either a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 system at St Mary’s, and the manager says it’s important that his squad keeps an open mind on adapting to different styles.

“It’s not important the system, but the mentality is important,” he explained. “The system can help you. I’m not closed with the 4-2-3-1 like we are used to playing or the three at the back. It’s important to understand the best players I can choose to put the opponent under pressure.”

Italian Ranieri has also suggested that his side is also targeting a minimum tally of 40 points in the Premier League by the end of the campaign. That total is traditionally thought of as a benchmark for survival in the division, and Ranieri says the champions can’t change that focus.

“Our goal from the beginning was 40 points,” he said. “People were laughing but I was so concentrated on these 40 points. Our goal is 40 points.

“Now there are two away matches and we want to do the best for us to achieve these 40 points as soon as possible.”

U18 Report: Norwich 1-2 Saints

Show/hide article…

Southampton Under-18s came from behind to secure a well-deserved 2-1 victory away against their Norwich City counterparts.

Despite going behind to an early Alan Fleming strike immediately from kick-off, Saints fought back with goals from Jonathan Afolabi and Will Smallbone to secure all three points.

The hosts had the ball in the net before Saints had even touched it, as Fleming dribbled directly from kick-off to slot under Alex Cull and gain an early lead.

Despite the set back, Saints quickly found a way back into the encounter. Tyreke Johnson burst down the left and cut back for the onrushing Smallbone, but his strike was well turned over by Fergal Hale-Brown in the Norwich goal.

Smallbone looked to turn provider ten minutes later as he teed up Jake Vokins on the left of the penalty area, but the left back dragged his shot wide of the far post.

Craig Fleming’s men were really starting to find momentum at this stage, and Afolabi and Smallbone both almost levelled proceedings before the break.

Saints started the second half as they had finished the first, and soon found their equaliser.

Harry Hamblin won the ball back on the right of the penalty area and hung a ball up towards Afolabi at the back post, who then volleyed in off the near post to make it one apiece.

It was almost two in as many minutes as Siph Mdlalose unleashed an audacious long-distance effort at goal moments later, but Hale-Brown was just able to tip the dipping ball over his crossbar.

It wasn’t until the 72nd minute that Saints completed their turnaround.

Afolabi turned provider as he slipped in Smallbone who broke into the penalty area and fired low into Hale-Brown’s near post to register his fifth goal of the season.

It could well have been 3-1 in the closing minutes, as captain Aaron O’Driscoll came close with two headed opportunities from Smallbone’s dangerous corners.

Saints then had to see out the final stages of the game with just ten men, as Christoph Klarer was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

But Fleming’s men defended resolutely and held on to pick up a much-deserved three points on the road.

Claude Puel happy with Southampton’s defence despite Jose Fonte sale

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel insists he is satisfied with Southampton’s central defensive options and feels no urgency to replace Jose Fonte this month.

The manager has also revealed that Fonte’s £8m transfer to West Ham could lead to Florin Gardos finally being given a run in the first team.

Southampton host Leicester on Nissan Super Sunday looking to end a run of four consecutive defeats in the Premier League, their worst run since December 2014.

The departure of the 33-year-old Fonte, despite his status as captain, could yet prove a positive given Puel said his squad had found the uncertainty surrounding his future difficult.

Virgil van Dijk and Maya Yoshida are again expected to become the Frenchman’s first-choice central defence. Puel, however, also explained Gardos will also be given the chance to add to the 11 appearances he has made in the injury-disrupted two-and-a-half-years since his arrival.

“It’s a long time with a lot injuries for Gardos,” said Puel of the Romanian. "But he came back for the U23s before (Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat of Norwich) with a good level and we will see if we just have Jack (Stephens) and Florin (Gardos) or you might see another player (now Fonte has left).

"Florin comes back in at an interesting level. We know he’s had different injuries and we will see in the reflection to see if Florin can participate with the squad at a good level. We will see this.

"It’s a strong defence: a strong central defence, with technical (quality) and with good quality in the duels. Sometimes (because of) injury or a player with a red card it’s important to consider if it’s enough with Jack and Florin to give a solution.

“It’s other quality than Jose, but I’m happy with the situation and with Yoshida and Van Dijk.”
