Done Deal: West Ham complete Jose Fonte signing

Show/hide article…

The Portuguese ace joins the Hammers on a two-and-a-half-year contract with an option for a further year. Fonte handed a transfer request into the Saints earlier this month and completes the switch to the London Stadium. And the central defender can’t wait to start working under Slaven Bilic. He said: “I signed for West Ham because they are a great club and a very big club. They have a lot of fans and I have known for a number of years how passionate they are.

“I signed for West Ham because they are a great club and a very big club” “The manager was also a very big influence. I thought that he really wanted me and that he sold me the project and the ambition of the Club. “I also have part of my family living in London and they are big West Ham fans. It just made sense for me at this stage to join West Ham. It is a new challenge and a new beginning and I am looking forward to it. “With the way that West Ham is going we can only look to be challenging in the top eight. “I told the manager in conversations that we want to win and we want to win trophies. The ambition is big and we need to aim high.

“West Ham are a massive club and it is an exciting challenge and it should be for everyone. We all need to get together and start working.” The Hammers return to Premier League action against Middlesbrough tomorrow. But Fonte will not be able to make his debut as he hasn’t been registered in time.

West Ham sign Southampton captain Jose Fonte in £8m deal

Show/hide article…

West Ham have announced the signing of Southampton captain Jose Fonte on a two-and-a-half year deal.

The Hammers sealed the deal for the Portuguese European Cup winner after having an £8million bid accepted by the south coast club, while back in Southampton Fonte’s defensive partner Virgil van Dijk took to Twitter to say he was ‘gutted’ to see his team-mate leave.

Van Dijk tweeted a heartfelt thanks to the Portuguese ace for helping him while at Southampton, after the pair struck up a telepathic defensive understanding out on the pitch.

Fonte was the final remaining piece of the Southampton squad who obtained promotion back to the top flight of English football back in 2012.

In recent weeks the 33-year-old had voiced his dissatisfaction with the Saints and put in an official transfer request with the club.

Fonte has put pen to paper on the two-and-a-half year deal, with the option of a further year involved in the contract.

After sealing his move to the Hammers, Fonte outlined his ambition to achieve big things in the capital.

‘I signed for West Ham because they are a great club and a very big club. They have a lot of fans and I have known for a number of years how passionate they are,’ The defender told whufc.com.

'The manager was also a very big influence. I thought that he really wanted me and that he sold me the project and the ambition of the club.

'I also have part of my family living in London and they are big West Ham fans. It just made sense for me at this stage to join West Ham. It is a new challenge and a new beginning and I am looking forward to it.

'With the way that West Ham is going we can only look to be challenging in the top eight.

'I told the manager in conversations that we want to win and we want to win trophies. The ambition is big and we need to aim high.

‘West Ham are a massive club and it is an exciting challenge and it should be for everyone. We all need to get together and start working,’ Fonte added.

Dimitri Payet, meanwhile, is determined to force a move to Marseille despite fears the French club are ready to walk away.

West Ham have rejected two offers and French sources hint Marseille have given up.

It is understood Payet plans to spend at least this weekend back home in France.

Fonte completes £8m West Ham move

Show/hide article…

Southampton stalwart Jose Fonte has completed a move to West Ham for a fee which could rise to £9m.

The 33-year-old centre half, who joined the club seven years ago, has moved to the Hammers for an initial fee of £8m, which could rise to £9m depending on add-ons.

Fonte, the Saints skipper, was the last remaining player from the side who helped Saints out of League One and back to the Premier League.

He made more than 250 appearances for Saints, including the back-to-back promotions and winning the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Wembley, and also became a Portugal international during his time with the club, leading to him winning Euro 2016 last summer.

However, he grew increasingly unsettled at St Mary’s, and made it clear several months ago that he wanted a new challenge with one last big move left in his career.

He was widely linked with Manchester United, but in the end it was West Ham who came in for him to end a stalemate caused by the centre half refusing the offer of a new deal at Saints.

Fonte had just 18 months left on his Saints contract, and was offered a pay rise and the chance for an extra year’s extension, but turned it down to seek pastures new.

He will return to St Mary’s in double quick time with Saints welcoming West Ham on February 4.

Claude Puel opted not to play Fonte during the January transfer window due to the unsettling nature of the speculation.

He must now decide whether to bring in a replacement or stick with the four centre halves he has at his disposal – Virgil van Dijk, Maya Yoshida, Jack Stephens and Florin Gardos – for the remainder of the season.

Southampton boss Claude Puel: The Premier League is more important than the EFL Cup

Show/hide article…

Saints have lost their last four games in the Premier League to fall into the bottom half of the table. And despite taking a goal advantage into Wednesday’s EFL semi-final second leg against Liverpool, boss Puel insists three points against Leicester tomorrow is more pressing than reaching the club’s first major final since losing the 1979 League Cup to Nottingham Forest. The Frenchman said: “I think the most important game is Leicester.

“It is important to stop this situation, the losses in the Premier League” “It is important to stop this situation, the losses in the Premier League. We need a good result and points now to be safe. “The cup is a good thing. It is an exciting game and we will have time to consider this game but the most important game is Leicester. The league is very important for us. “It is important to find the solution to our form and keep the attitude up from the last game because it was very interesting without clinical strikers.

“Now it is important to find this efficiency in front of goal and to take points with all the support of the fans. “It is an important game and I think the maturity and experience of the game will be important without thinking of other games in other competitions. “We cannot see other things in the future without taking points and good results. Now it is important to come back and find a good solution to win our games and see in the future. “We cannot have any other ambition at the moment other than to win just this game.”

Puel: We must take our chances

Show/hide article…

The reverse fixture between the two sides was a 0-0 draw, and Southampton head into this one looking to arrest a run of four consecutive Premier League defeats against the reigning champions, who currently sit 15th and without a win since April on the road themselves.

Puel said: “That was in the first part of the season and it was a good game which we dominated.

“It was a shame in that moment but I hope we can perform the same again for the second game against this team but with goals.”

Shane Long netted his second goal of the campaign in the 1-0 success over Norwich City on Wednesday, with Saints looking to be more potent in front of goal.

That is something Puel is keen to address, in order to turn positive performances into points.

He added: “I think it’s important that strikers score and Shane has had the opportunity. I think it’s important for his confidence and for the squad.

“I hope we can make progress about this situation. It’s important to have many chances in all of the games.

“Step by step we need to find a good efficiency and be clinical about our games to reward all our good work.”

Memphis Depay completed his move from Manchester United to Lyon

Memphis Depay was the biggest mover of the day as he completed his switch from Manchester United to Lyon.

West Brom also sold striker Saido Berahino to Stoke for £12m, while Jose Fonte made the move from Southampton to West Ham.

AC Milan have loaned Everton’s Gerard Deulofeu until the end of the season, although the Toffees are insisting the deal isn’t complete.

Jake Livermore also completed his £10m switch from Hull to the Baggies.

Gardos hoping for Saints chance

Show/hide article…

Forgotten man Florin Gardos could take advantage of Jose Fonte’s expected move away from St Mary’s by re-establishing his Saints career.

Romanian international defender Gardos joined Saints two-and-a-half years ago for around £4m but has made just 11 starts in that time, with his progress being hampered by a serious knee injury.

Gardos has been back playing with the under-23s this season, but was totally out of the first team reckoning until a surprise recall to the bench for the FA Cup third round replay with Norwich.

The 28-year-old still has 18 months left to run on his Saints contract, but needs to make an impression soon if his stay is to be extended with Jose Fonte departing the club.

Saints boss Claude Puel said: “It’s a long time with a lot injuries for Gardos, but he came back for the under-23s before this game (Norwich) with a good level and we will see if we just have Jack (Stephens) and Florin (Gardos) or you might see another player if Jose Fonte leaves Southampton.

“Florin comes back in at an interesting level. We know he’s had different injuries and we will see in the reflection to see if Florin can participate with the squad at a good level. We will see this.”

Without Fonte, Maya Yoshida and Virgil van Dijk are the first choice centre half pairing, with Jack Stephens and Gardos battling to be next in line, and to convince Puel he doesn’t need to recruit another defender this month.

“It’s other quality than Jose, but I think I’m happy with the situation and with Yoshida and Van Dijk,” reckoned Puel.

“It’s a strong defence – a strong central defence, with technical and with good quality in the duels. Sometimes injury or a player with a red card it’s important to consider if it’s enough with Jack and Florin to give a solution. “ There has been much criticism of late over Puel’s tactics, but he insists he will stick by his plans and that the players will respond.

“It’s always the same system, always the same tactic, every time. Every play. All the players have rehearsed the system, and the play,” he said.

“It’s an obligation (to rotate): we play every three days, it’s not possible to play with the same 11 players.

“I repeat, it’s a good system because we can develop different players; young players can play with good opportunities, and qualities, and we improve always different players, young players of the academy.

“This is important for us, because it’s our work, and we develop the squad. We have two players for every position of the team, and this is very important.

“We are, since the beginning of the season, the first team with all these games, the second I think is Manchester United.

“Playing all these games with quality, and good freshness, lucidity, it’s important to make some rotation. Against Leicester, it will be different, and against Norwich. It’s normal.”

West Ham sign Portugal defender Fonte from Southampton

The central defender, who has the option to sign for another season, had not featured for Southampton since handing in a transfer request earlier this month.

The south-coast club claimed he had repeatedly rejected improved terms but Fonte, who had 18 months left on his deal, countered that he had not been offered a new contract.

He moved to Crystal Palace from Benfica in 2007 and joined Southampton in 2010, making 288 appearances, including 154 in the Premier League. He was captain for the past 3-1/2 seasons.

Fonte, who has family in London, said the size of West Ham and their passionate fans attracted him to the club along with the fact that manager Slaven Bilic was keen to sign him.

“The manager was… a very big influence. I thought that he really wanted me and that he sold me the project and the ambition of the club,” he told the club website (www.whufc.com).

“I also have part of my family living in London and they are big West Ham fans. It just made sense for me at this stage to join West Ham. It is a new challenge and a new beginning…"

Fonte will not be available for Saturday’s league game at Middlesbrough but could make his debut for West Ham when Manchester City visit the London Stadium on Feb. 1.
