Liverpool should have edge over Saints in spell that could make or break season

Show/hide article…

The visitors certainly seem to have all the momentum heading north to Anfield as Liverpool and Southampton both stand just 90 minutes - or perhaps a little bit more - away from a Wembley final.

They were far and away the best team in the first encounter a fortnight ago as they gave Liverpool the runaround and probably feel they should have more than a 1-0 advantage to protect.

Is that protect, or should it be extend? The mentality of coaches and players going into games of this nature is always a ticklish issue in terms of whether to rely on what you have got or get stuck in again and put yourself in an even greater position of strength.

The hosts may have their issues at the moment and Saturday’s 3-2 reverse at home to Swansea was verging on the laughable for a side that considers itself a title contender but Southampton turning up and sitting back in a bid to cling on does not look the approach to take.

They ended a run of four straight defeats in the Premier League with a 3-0 demolition of everyone’s current favourite whipping boys Leicester at the weekend and putting the brakes on that nice little piece of momentum could have a very negative effect.

Classy midfielder Dusan Tadic certainly wants to keep things on the up and up with his belief that manager Claude Puel should stick to the strongest team available this close to a major final and one of the goalscorers against the Foxes feels fresh, well and ready to take on two games every three days.

Puel is very hard to pin down though when it comes to his selection process - the Frenchman has yet to name the same starting XI twice and has gone through a remarkable 200 changes to his line-up over the season.

His hand may be forced again if best player Virgil Van Dijk does not recover from an ankle issue which necessitated his withdrawal from the Leicester game with the irony that he could all of a sudden be short of cover in central defence following the sale of Jose Fonte to West Ham.

The Dutchman’s possible absence rather thwarts a potential bet in the game too. His considerable presence in the box and Swansea’s exposure of Liverpool’s continuing inability to defend set-pieces would make him a fascinating contender in the anytime scorer market at 14/1 but that could well end up a non-runner.

Liverpool now trail Chelsea by 10 points at the top of the table and with that rival up next in the Premier League, Jurgen Klopp and his side stand on the brink of their season disappearing into the abyss.

An FA Cup fourth-round clash against Wolves (who knocked out Premier League opposition last time) is sandwiched in between the Southampton and Chelsea games so three defeats - which is unlikely but not beyond the realms of possibility - could see the Reds out in the wilderness before the end of January.

That means some unwanted additional pressure here and the 1-0 deficit Klopp seemed happy enough to accept after the final whistle at St Mary’s all of a sudden becomes that much more tricky to overcome.

Liverpool’s loss to Swansea was their first at Anfield in over a year which added up to a spell 25 games so dropping another one in such quick succession would be quite a achievement even in this crazy era of Merseyside unpredictability.

There are such a lot of grey areas between the pair when attempting to weigh up a wager taking into account team news, strategy and approach but surely it would be fair to conclude that the lure of a day out at a cup final is too great to dismiss and both will tackle the task at hand with relish.

There are a host of markets in the game containing odds-on quotes in terms of who will progress, total goals and both teams to score but I am going to take a dart on the hosts to successfully find the target twice - it may or may not be enough to get to Wembley but should make things interesting.

Which January transfers could happen? Football Whispers rank the rumours

With just a week to go before the January window shuts, who could be moving where?

As the rumour mill goes into overdrive, Football Whispers has a way of ranking every potential move with their transfer predictor algorithm.

Each rumour’s validity is rated out of five, so to check out which players may be heading to your Premier League club by January 31, read on below…

Hottest Whisper: Calciomercato have reported that Arsenal are watching Wolfsburg left-back Ricardo Rodriguez (3.2), with a view to a potential summer move.

The Switzerland international, who is apparently also being tracked by Juventus and Inter Milan, could prove a long-term replacement for Nacho Monreal.

Hottest Whisper: Having made just four appearances for Chelsea this season, Bournemouth are understood to be interested in signing goalkeeper Asmir Begovic (3.2).

Sky sources understand the Cherries will only sell if they can find a replacement for the back-up goalkeeper.

Hottest Whisper: Burnley are reportedly battling it out for Robbie Brady’s (2.0) signature - and they could have the advantage thanks to his Ireland team-mate Jeff Hendrick.

The Press Association claim Burnley have lodged a £13m bid, and Hendrick revealed to Sky Sports that he is doing his best to sell the club to the winger.

Hottest Whisper: With Diego Costa’s situation resolved - for now - Chelsea’s need for another striker is not so great.

But Sky Sports had reported of Chelsea’s interest in Swansea’s Fernando Llorente (2.5) even before talk of Costa potentially heading to China.

Hottest Whisper: Palace saw an offer of £7m turned down for Sunderland’s Patrick van Aanholt (4.1) earlier this month, but it is reported that Sam Allardyce is still keen on the full-back.

Sunderland boss David Moyes has openly criticised the Dutchman’s defending, but having chipped in with three goals this season, he could become an important attacking outlet for Palace.

Hottest Whisper: According to the Daily Mail, Everton could be a landing spot for Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic (2.2), whose time in west London appears to be coming to an end.

Ivanovic has not started a game since September as he has become a square peg in a round hole in Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 formation.

Hottest Whisper: Hull head coach Marco Silva snapped up his main target, Lazar Markovic, yesterday but is still chasing Leonardo Ulloa’s (2.2) signature, according to The Sun.

Ulloa’s agent, Horacio Rossi, has aimed his anger at Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri - who does not want to let his striker go this month - by claiming his client risks having his career “destroyed”.

Hottest Whisper: The Leicester Mercury, among other sources, have noted the reigning Premier League champions’ interest in Middlesbrough’s Gaston Ramirez (2.2).

Aitor Karanka has been quick to dismiss the speculation - but the decision may be out of the Boro boss’ hands as the attacker reportedly has a £15m release clause.

Hottest Whisper: With Jose Fonte having already departed, Southampton are likely to dig their heels until the summer over Virgil van Dijk (2.8) at the very least.

Van Dijk has also been named new Saints team captain after Fonte’s exit.

Hottest Whisper: Moise Kean (2.3) is another one of this generation’s up-and-coming wonderkids and, according to the Daily Star, Manchester City are at the front of the queue for the Juventus striker.

Just 16, he became the first person to have been born in the 21st century to play in a Champions League match in November.

Hottest Whisper: Sky sources understand Man Utd are interested in Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann (3.4), should he become available in the summer.

The France international has a reported £86m buyout clause and it would undoubtedly be another sign of intent if United do pull the trigger.

Hottest Whisper: Boro have made an enquiry for Stoke’s Bojan (3.1) and it is understood the Potters want £12m for the Spaniard.

It is thought West Brom, Las Palmas and Valencia have also made enquiries of their own during this transfer window.

Hottest Whisper: Mamadou Sakho (2.0) has not played a competitive match for Liverpool since April, but, according to the Liverpool Echo, Southampton had a loan bid turned down for the defender recently.

This whisper could grow in strength over the next week, with Southampton looking to fill the void in defence created by the departure of Fonte.

Hottest Whisper: Following the capture of West Brom’s Saido Berahino, Stoke’s January transfer business could well be done.

Murmurs that Burnley defender Michael Keane (1.7) could be heading to the Potteries were played down by Mark Hughes himself, but it could be a link to remember for the summer.

Hottest whisper: Leonardo Ulloa (1.9), who was linked to a January move to Sunderland by The Telegraph back in November, is reportedly trying to force his way out of Leicester.

David Moyes’ interest reportedly extends back to the summer, but the reported £10m asking price may be too dear for Sunderland.

Hottest Whisper: Paul Clement is eager to reinforce struggling Swansea and, according to the Daily Mirror, he may coax free-scoring midfielder Yoric Ravet (1.9) to Wales.

The Swiss midfielder has assisted 14 goals and scored a further six for Young Boys this season, though time is running out to thrash out a deal.

Hottest Whisper: The Daily Star have reported that Tottenham lead the race for Inter Milan starlet Andrea Pinamonti (2.4).

Inter could lose out on their homegrown striker, who is only 17, as they have yet to tie him down to a long-term deal - putting Spurs on high alert.

Hottest Whisper: Mauro Zarate (4.8) looks to be on the brink of joining Watford from Fiorentina.

Zarate has passed a medical ahead of his loan return to the Premier League, where he previously played for Birmingham, West Ham and QPR.

Hottest Whisper: The sale of Berahino has freed up funds for West Brom boss Tony Pulis, though according to Sky sources, interest in Odion Ighalo (2.1) has now cooled off.

Pulis had reportedly lined up Watford striker Ighalo for a potential swap deal with Berahino, but is thought to be against negotiating a separate deal.

Hottest Whisper: It looks as though Scott Hogan (4.7) is set to join West Ham from Brentford this week.

The striker, who has scored 14 goals in 25 Championship appearances this season, was left out of the Brentford squad that lost to Wigan on Saturday.

Van Dijk would be “badly advised” to join another Premier League club

Show/hide article…

FORMER Saints striker Gordon Watson believes Virgil Van Dijk will be “badly advised” if the leaves St Mary’s and signs for another Premier League club.

The Dutch international has blossomed into one of the best centre halves in Europe since his £12m move from Glasgow Celtic on the final day of the summer 2015 transfer window.

Van Dijk has been perennially linked with Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea in recent months.

Price tags of around £50m have routinely been mentioned.

And at the weekend Anfield legend Steven Gerrard admitted if he was Liverpool manager he would try and sign Van Dijk Speaking to BT Sport, Gerrard said: “Who I think we need, I would go and try and bid for Van Dijk from Southampton.

“But we’ve had enough of their players so that will probably go down like a lead balloon.”

Watson believes Van Dijk is destined for one of European football’s truly stellar names if and when he decides his future lies away from St Mary’s.

“Virgil Van Dijk is the best centre half in the Premier League, and one of the two best I have seen in the last five years.

“The other one played for Saints as well - Toby Alderweireld.

“Van Dijk could easily play for one of the top three European clubs - Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

“He is probably more of a Barcelona or Bayern player than a Madrid one, though.

“He must surely end up going to one of those three clubs, and for a lot of money.

“If Virgil ends up going to another Premier League club he will have been badly advised.”

Romeu: I feel so comfortable here

Show/hide article…

Romeu penned the four-and-a-half-year deal on the eve of the EFL Cup semi-final with Liverpool, and explained how much he has come to cherish his time at Saints, since his arrival 18 months ago.

"I’ve been in a few clubs, and I haven’t felt as comfortable as I am feeling here right now,” he said.

“It is difficult to find a place where you are happy, where you feel part of it, and with this club I’ve got this. This is very important.

“It is something I was looking for when I came here and having it is what I want.”

Romeu, who said he “couldn’t be any happier” after signing the new contract, also credited his relationship with the Southampton supporters as one of the reasons why he wanted to extend his commitment.

"I think the way I’ve been working, they have been very pleased with me, and I can give that confidence back on the pitch,” he said.

“It’s very good to be out there playing and having that support from them. It makes you feel more comfortable and makes you enjoy much more those games, and that’s something very, very good for me.

“This is one of the things also why I want to stay, because having that love from the fans makes you feel so good in a place.

“I just want to say thank you to them and keep making them happy with our games.”

Oriol Romeu: Southampton midfielder signs new four-and-a-half-year deal

Show/hide article…

Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu has signed a new four-and-a-half-year deal with the Premier League club.

The 25-year-old Spaniard has missed just one league game since the start of the season, making 30 appearances in all competitions under Saints manager Claude Puel.

Romeu joined Saints in a £5m move from Chelsea in August 2015, when he signed a three-year deal.

“I couldn’t be happier to have this new contract with the club,” Romeu said.

“Ever since I came here I have felt very good. Everything has been positive for me. I have developed myself and been getting better every day. Hopefully there will be more to come.”

Southampton travel to Liverpool on Wednesday as they battle for a place in the final of the EFL Cup.

Oriol Romeu signs new Southampton contract until 2021

Show/hide article…

The 25-year-old has established himself as a first-team regular since arriving from Chelsea in 2015 and has failed to start just one Premier League game this season under Claude Puel.

“I couldn’t be any happier to have this new contract with the club,” he said. "Ever since I came here I have felt very, very good. Everything has been positive for me. I have developed myself and been getting better every day.

“Looking forward, it’s a good thing for me, but hopefully there will be more to come and nice experiences to go through.”

Saints’ director of football Les Reed said: "We’re delighted that Oriol has extended. We’re confident he will continue to build on what has been an impressive 18 months since he joined us from Chelsea.

"Since arriving at the club, Oriol has worked extremely hard to establish himself as an integral part of the team and we firmly believe he will continue to be a key pillar in our squad for many years to come.

“At the age of 25, Oriol still has the capacity to develop and progress as an individual, and we’re very pleased that he sees Southampton as the perfect environment for him to do just that.”

Romelu is likely to feature for Southampton in their EFL Cup semi-final, second leg at Anfield on Wednesday, live on Sky Sports 1HD, with the Saints aiming to protect a 1-0 lead.

Romeu agrees new Saints contract

Show/hide article…

Oriol Romeu has become the latest Saints star to commit himself to a new long-term contract at the club after penning a deal that keeps him at St Mary’s until 2021.

Central midfielder Romeu has become a lynchpin of the side this season, having grown in stature since his arrival from Chelsea in 2015.

He has now agreed a new four-and-a-half-year contract to underline his commitment to the club.

Romeu said: “I couldn’t be any happier to have this new contract with the club.

“Ever since I came here I have felt very, very good. Everything has been positive for me. I have developed myself and been getting better every day.

“Looking forward, it’s a good thing for me, but hopefully there will be more to come and nice experiences to go through.”

Executive Director of Football Les Reed added: “We’re delighted that Oriol has extended his commitment to Southampton Football Club.

“We’re confident he will continue to build on what has been an impressive 18 months since he joined us from Chelsea.
