Puel: Keep the confidence

Show/hide article…

Saints stopped a run of four successive Premier League defeats when they saw off the champions 3-0, at St Mary’s, on Sunday.

Their attention has now turned to the EFL Cup semi-final second leg against the Reds, with Puel’s men holding a 1-0 lead as they head to Anfield.

"I think it was important to finish that bad run of four losses and it was important for the confidence,” said Puel.

“I think against Leicester, we played with confidence and quality. That’s not easy after four losses, and I am happy about this.

“It’s important all the squad keep this good attitude, with good confidence, and I think it was a good thing and a good job against Leicester.

"We know Liverpool. They lost against Swansea at home, and I am sure they will want to react against us, but it’s important to keep all of our focus about our play.

“We know they are fantastic, a great team, with great players, but you saw in the first leg we have the ability to produce a strong game against them. It will be important to make a strong game – a perfect game – I think.”

Claude Puel will look to Jack Stephens if Virgil van Dijk cannot face Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel will look to Jack Stephens if Virgil van Dijk cannot face Liverpool

Claude Puel is confident Jack Stephens is ready to step into Virgil van Dijk’s shoes if the Dutch centre-half is not fit for Southampton’s EFL semi-final, second leg against Liverpool on Wednesday.

Van Dijk is dealing with an ankle injury and was replaced by Stephens, 22, during the second half of Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Leicester City.

Stephens, who has only made six appearances for the Saints, could face the daunting task at Anfield on Wednesday, live on Sky Sports 1HD from 7.30pm, of trying to stop Liverpool overhauling a 1-0 deficit but Puel is confident he will up to the challenge if needed.

The Southampton manager said: "If he has to play this game, I think he will play with good spirit and he’s a good player.

"He is an England Under-21 international and he knows about these important games. He has the quality and I have full confidence with Jack. He’s a good defender, he’s intelligent, he can anticipate the action. [He is] very good technically.

"With the Under-21s, you saw at home [against Italy at St Mary’s], it was a good game, he was the best player on the entire pitch.

"Since the beginning, it is a competition we have played with young players. For example, the last round against Arsenal away, we see the young players get a fantastic result.

“The focus was just on their game and this is just as important. They took confidence; they are upbeat in every training session. I think it is not a problem, but for Jack and all of the other players, it’s just to think about the game, stay strong together.”

Jurgen Klopp will be looking for a response from his Liverpool side after their shock 3-2 defeat to Swansea in the Premier League on Saturday.

Puel knows Southampton are likely to be greeted by a loud atmosphere at Anfield but he is confident his team can handle the pressure and reach the club’s first major final since 2003.

“Of course, it is special to play at Liverpool but I think it will be an exciting game,” Puel said. "We are not afraid about this. For me, it is the same. I played one game there. It was a good memory. It was with Lyon [in 2009] we played in the Champions League and we won.

"It is important for all of the players, the squad, to play this game with a positive attitude. It will be a difficult game but with all possibilities.

"If we respect our play and quality, it will be dangerous and not good to just defend and try to preserve this lead, it is not possible.

“We will see the result. We are not the favourites, it is the second leg away against a great team with great players but it is a positive because the pressure is on them not us.”

Puel stands on the brink of an exclusive Saints club

Show/hide article…

CLAUDE Puel stands on the brink of joining an exclusive club.

In Southampton FC’s history, only two managers have ever led them to a major cup final.

Lawrie McMenemy famously lifted the FA Cup in 1976 and guided Saints to their only League Cup final three years later.

Gordon Strachan masterminded Saints’ appearance in the 2003 FA Cup final in Cardiff.

Of course, there have been two others who have managed Saints in Wembley finals.

Ian Branfoot, in his first season at The Dell, took the club to the 1991/92 Zenith Data Systems Cup final.

And Alan Pardew, in his first season at St Mary’s, won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in 2009/10.

With respect, though, the ZDS and the JPT are not major tournaments.

Though it was nice to win the JPT in front of 50,000 Saints fans seven years ago, the fact Saints were in it in the first place was symptomatic of how far the club had fallen.

It was, lest we forget, a tournament for third and fourth tier clubs only.

The League Cup is the second highest domestic cup tournament in English football, and Saints are 90 minutes from reaching the final for only the second time in almost 60 years.

Only Branfoot has ever been in the situation Puel finds himself, though.

The situation of having to negotiate an away tie in the second leg of a cup semi final.

Back in 1991/92, Saints were second bottom of the First Division when they beat eighth-placed Chelsea 2-0 at The Dell in the first leg.

That was a good lead to take to Stamford Bridge - double that which Saints take to Anfield tomorrow night.

It was also more than enough, as Saints won 3-1 in west London to book their Wembley final.

Continued on facing page Despite that ‘showpiece occasion’, Branfoot’s time in charge at Saints is not fondly remembered.

History has yet to judge how Claude Puel’s Saints managerial career will work out.

For sure, he has yet to endear himself to all the fans.

His tactics, his rotation, his failure to bring in a striker last summer, his falling-out with Jose Fonte, the club’s anti-climatic Europa League exit - all of those, rightly or wrongly, have been used as sticks to beat him with on social media.

Therefore, it goes without saying that a Wembley final appearance will help bag him a stack of Brownie Points.

Lest we forget, Wembley finals do not come around too often for Saints.

The stadium has been in place since 1923 (minus seven years for rebuilding in the noughties) and Saints have only ever played there five times.

One FA Cup final, one League Cup final, one Charity Shield, one ZDS Cup and one JPT Cup.

That is not much of a roll call for a club with a history such as Saints’.

That is why Claude Puel - whether you think he is the right man for the Saints job or not - can tomorrow write his own name into Saints’ folklore.

Southampton boss Claude Puel promises attacking approach against Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel has vowed to go on the attack at Anfield on Wednesday night and ruin Jurgen Klopp ’s bid for his maiden trophy as Liverpool boss.

Saints are protecting a slender 1-0 lead from the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final and know another clean sheet will secure their first major Wembley final since 1979.

But Puel, blasted by south coast supporters for his negative approach, has made scoring in front of the Kop his priority.

The Frenchman said: “We know this game will be difficult against a great team and great players.

“They lost their last game in the Premier League against Swansea and will want to react.

“It’s important for us to stay with good focus about our game, our play, and to play with good calm and quality.

“We are in a situation where it is not efficient to stay just one goal up. It will be important to score another goal away.

“We will have a good team and a strong team to defend this result, but not just to defend but to attack also and play a strong game like the first leg.

“It will be difficult of course and Liverpool will be favourite but it is football and all is possible. All the pressure is on them.”

Southampton were yesterday sweating on the fitness of star defender Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk limped out of Sunday’s 3-0 win at home to champions Leicester with an ankle injury and England under-21 starlet Jack Stephens is on standby to deputise.

Stephens, 22, has not made his full Premier League debut but Puel insists the academy product will not be daunted by stepping in for van Dijk.

Former Lyon chief Puel added: “If Jack has to play this game I think he will play with a good spirit and calm and he’s a good player.”

“For all the players it’s the same. It’s an important game, an exciting game and fantastic to play.

“I have all my confidence with Jack. It’s not a problem for me. He will play with a good mentality.”

Jack Stephens may spell Virgil van Dijk for Southampton in cup clash

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Claude Puel is confident youngster Jack Stephens can fill in for Virgil van Dijk if the Dutchman is unable to shake off an ankle injury ahead of their EFL semifinal second leg against Liverpool.

The England Under-21 international replaced Van Dijk during the second half of their 3-0 victory over Leicester on Sunday which was only the centre-back’s sixth appearance for the Saints in all competitions.

Puel’s side face the daunting task of travelling to Merseyside on Wednesday as they look to preserve their 1-0 lead from the first leg.

For much of the season, Puel has stuck with his rotational policy but the possibility of missing a key player like Van Dijk does not worry the boss as he believes the occasion will not concern Stephens, despite his lack of experience.

When asked if the second leg at Anfield would be a good experience for Stephens, the Saints boss said: "If he has to play this game, I think he will play with good spirit and he’s a good player.

“He is an England under-21 international and he knows about these important games. He has the quality and I have full confidence with Jack. He’s a good defender, he’s intelligent, he can anticipate the action. Very good technically.”

They took confidence, they are upbeat in every training session. I think it is not a problem, but for Jack and all of the other players, it’s just to think about the game, stay strong together.”

Wednesday’s contest could see Southampton reach their first major final since 2003 but Puel’s opposite number Jurgen Klopp will be hoping for an instant response from his side after their Premier League winless streak extended to three games with a 3-2 home defeat against Swansea.

Many have questioned if the Saints can handle the rousing atmosphere at one of world’s football most iconic stadiums but Puel insists his previous experience at Anfield, with Lyon in 2009, will help him equip his squad and prepare Southampton for a game of this magnitude.
