Swansea have proven that an underdog victory at Anfield is not mission impossible, but Saints will be under no illusions that to make it to Wembley will be mission very difficult.
There are certainly reasons for a sense of optimism.
For example, Liverpool’s last six games in all competitions have produced just one win – and that was a 1-0 in an FA Cup replay away to Plymouth.
It is hardly the sort of form that is going to strike fear into Claude Puel and his squad.
That said, a huge game atmosphere at Anfield under lights, with a place in the League Cup final up for grabs, is always going to be a tough prospect.
Saints go there with a one goal advantage and, though there remains a palpable sense of frustration around the squad that they have such a narrow lead when it could have been more, it is something to hold on to nonetheless.
The opening stages of the game are likely to be crucial.
Following that defeat to Swansea at Anfield, not to mention the fact that Saints beat Liverpool so recently, there will be nerves there.
Make no mistake, this is still a big deal for the Liverpool side, and while Saints go there with a sense of confidence, it is the Reds who have the most to lose.
Saints are underdogs. Puel has made that point loud and clear in the build-up. He is trying to make sure it is a case of pressure off for his squad as much as possible.
There is, and will be, no escaping the favourites tag hung around Liverpool’s neck They are expected to make it to Wembley, to give Jurgen Klopp a first chance of some silverware since taking charge.
Saints need to try and use that to their advantage.
While at times their style of play has been criticised this season, it does look like a very viable game plan in this situation.
Saints have to try and keep things very tight from the kick-off.
Liverpool will most likely come out of the blocks flying, trying to get an early goal to level the tie on aggregate and put themselves in a position to win with relative ease.
However, it might not take too long for the doubts to creep in if Saints can hold them at bay.
You can almost feel the kind of atmosphere that might creep in if after half an hour the game is still goalless. The longer that goes on, the better Saints’ chances of making it through.
To achieve that of course won’t be easy.
Though Liverpool’s attack is missing the dynamic threat of the pace of Sadio Mane with the former Saints man away on Africa Cup of Nations duty, they still pose plenty of problems.
Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho offer a real and present danger, and there is more in reserve too.
Saints will likely try and sit deep, allow little space between the lines and challenge Liverpool to break them down in the way so many sides have done at St Mary’s this season.
It is difficult to do, as we have often seen, and even for the best sides. Liverpool did not play at all well by their own standards at St Mary’s in the first leg, but they certainly couldn’t find a way through Saints.
Saints will have a threat on the counter attack, and Claude Puel may well try and get Shane Long and Nathan Redmond in the team as they offer that fluid and quick breakaway option.
You would imagine that is Saints’ best chance of scoring, drawing Liverpool out and hitting them on the break. It will be much harder if Saints don’t defend well and end up in a situation where they have to chase the game.
Liverpool may well opt for a very aggressive high press, which would clearly make things difficult as Saints will struggle to keep possession for spells to ease the pressure, but it does make counter attacking a more effective prospect.
When all is said and done, Puel is correct. Saints are not the favourites to get through.
But, then, they weren’t the favourites in the first leg at St Mary’s and they might have done even better than a 1-0 win.
It will be hard to get through, but there is no doubt they have a decent enough chance if they can perform at their very best.
