Southampton increase offer to £14m for Napoli striker Gabbiadini

Show/hide article…

Southampton have offered £14million for striker Manolo Gabbiadini as they look to find a common ground with his club Napoli.

The Italians want £18million for the 25-year-old striker who has been courted by Borussia Monchengladbach this week also.

West Bromwich Albion and Everton have also asked about Gabbiadini in this window but have been reluctant to match Napoli’s asking price.

Having begun his career at Atalanta, the wiry forward secured a move to Juventus but never established himself in Turin.

A move to Bologna on loan was followed by a permanent switch to Sampdoria where he impressed enough for Napoli to come calling.

Gabbiadini was a target for Stoke and Everton in the summer while Wolfsburg have also made offers in the past month but wanted an initial loan.

He has made 19 appearances this season and scored five goals, including three in his last three games.

Claude Puel is positive he can keep Anfield quiet once again

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has implored his players not to be overwhelmed by the unique Anfield cup night atmosphere having recorded an unlikely win against Liverpool there with Lyon.

Much is made of the way the Merseysiders get the terraces rocking for big fixtures and Jurgen Klopp’s side will need that badly on Wednesday when they attempt to overturn Southampton’s 1-0 lead in their League Cup semi-final tie.

But ahead of the match Southampton manager Puel recounted when he arrived with Lyon during the 2009-10 Champions League group stage with a team in turmoil.

Puel was at odds with many of his Lyon players for his strict discipline and was blamed for a raft of injuries they felt were caused by his unorthodox extreme fitness drive in pre-season, when he had them cross-country skiing.

It would result in Puel’s own player, Jeremy Toulalan, confronting him on the touchline after taking exception to being told not to dribble so much during a match against St Etienne.

Toulalan needed restraining by team-mate Sidney Govou. With a cloud over the squad, Puel still pulled off a 2-1 victory at Anfield with a stoppage time winner from Cesar Delgado with several players playing through injury.

It inflicted a fourth successive defeat for Liverpool, who had Rafa Benitez in charge, which was their worst run since 1987 and would condemn them to an exile from the Champions League that lasted for five years.

‘It’s something special to play at Liverpool,’ Puel said. 'But I think it’s a good thing, it is an exciting game. We are not afraid of this. For me it’s the same: I have been there once — with Lyon in the Champions League and we won.

'I have fantastic memories just before the start with all the fans singing. It was not just about the result, which was good, but it was great for players to feel this atmosphere. It is one of the best atmospheres.

‘[My Southampton players] do not need to be afraid. We are not the favourites. It is the second leg away from home, it’s very difficult against great players and a great team. But the pressure is all for them, not us.’

The experience will be a baptism of fire for inexperienced centre-back Jack Stephens, 22, who has made only three senior starts and three substitute appearances for the club.

With captain Virgil van Dijk set to miss the match with an ankle injury and with the recent sale of the troublesome Jose Fonte to West Ham, Stephens is set to be thrown in.

Puel has set up with Stephens and Maya Yoshida during training sessions and believes they can stand up to the test of Liverpool’s mighty strike force who have outscored everyone in the Premier League this season.

‘I have all my confidence with Jack,’ Puel insisted. ‘It’s not a problem for me if he has to play. Jack is a good defender. He is an England Under 21 international, intelligent and he can anticipate the action with good technical ability. It’s important to have confidence from the start.’

Lawrie McMenemy: Southampton winning a cup 40 years on will create a memory that will never fade

Show/hide article…

‘It was over there that it happened,” says Lawrie McMenemy, pointing towards a room at the quaint Potters Heron Hotel in Romsey.

He is talking about what is arguably still the most jaw-dropping transfer in British football history. The year was 1980 and Kevin Keegan, then the European Footballer of the Year, would sign a blank contract and overlook interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid to join McMenemy’s Southampton.

It is a reminder not just of how football has changed but also, ahead of Southampton’s EFL Cup semi-final second leg with Liverpool on Wednesday night, of how his club did once regularly trade blows with the absolute elite.

This might again be something approaching a golden era for the Saints but, as they stand on Wednesday night only 90 minutes from a first major Wembley final since McMenemy in 1976 and then 1979, there is also a rare chance to create the sort of memory that may never fade.

“As a manager, you feel your best achievement is being high up at the end of the season in the league,” says McMenemy. “We were runners-up to Liverpool but, even now, when I park my car on a match day and walk to the door it is not what people remember. When the adults stop you and want you to sign their kid’s programme, they tell them that you were the manager when we won the Cup at Wembley.

Puel: We are not afraid of Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel insists his team are not afraid of Liverpool as Saints tonight aim to reach a major final for the first time in 14 years.

Saints take on Jurgen Klopp’s men at Anfield in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg, and head to Merseyside with a one goal advantage from the match at St Mary’s.

Playing a huge midweek game under the floodlights at Anfield is a notoriously intimidating prospect, but Puel says the pressure is all on Liverpool and there is no reason for his side to have any fear.

“It’s an exciting game, not to be afraid. We play and we will see the result,” said the Saints boss.

“Of course I don’t want to go away just to see and just to listen without the ability, the capacity, to push them in difficulties. No.

“It’s an exciting game and we will see the result.

“We are not the favourite of this game in the second leg away which is a very difficult against a great team, great players.

“All is positive for us. The pressure is for them, not for us.”

With a Wembley final in just over a month’s time awaiting the winners, there is an awful lot at stake.

But having beaten Liverpool so recently, and with the Reds having won just one in their last six in all competitions, there is an obvious chance to make history.

“Of course it’s something special, special to play at Liverpool, but I think it’s a good thing, it’s an exciting game,” said Puel.

“We are not afraid about this.

“For me the same, I played one game and it was a good memory. It was with Lyon in the Champions League and we win against Liverpool.

“It is important for all the squad, all the players, to take this game with positive attitude.

“We know it will be a difficult game but with all possibilities if we respect our play and our quality.

“It will be dangerous I think and no good just to stay in defence and to try to keep this goal. It is not possible.”

Puel’s experience of Anfield, and getting through, as a manager remains a highlight of his career, and one he hopes he can repeat this evening.

“It’s fantastic just before the start with all the fans, it’s a fantastic atmosphere.

“It’s a fantastic memory, not just about the result which was good of course, but for a player it is fantastic to feel this and a fantastic atmosphere and I like this.

“It’s one of the best atmospheres of course because as a player I had different atmospheres like one time Feyenoord, a semi-final European game, second leg.

“Feyenoord was a fantastic before the game to listen to all these song of the fans, the atmosphere.

“I think it’s fantastic when I can see this and listen to this. It is fantastic for a trainer, for a player and it’s a good atmosphere, not to be afraid but to do a strong game, a fantastic game.”

COMMENT: Mission difficult but not impossible for Saints

Show/hide article…

Swansea have proven that an underdog victory at Anfield is not mission impossible, but Saints will be under no illusions that to make it to Wembley will be mission very difficult.

There are certainly reasons for a sense of optimism.

For example, Liverpool’s last six games in all competitions have produced just one win – and that was a 1-0 in an FA Cup replay away to Plymouth.

It is hardly the sort of form that is going to strike fear into Claude Puel and his squad.

That said, a huge game atmosphere at Anfield under lights, with a place in the League Cup final up for grabs, is always going to be a tough prospect.

Saints go there with a one goal advantage and, though there remains a palpable sense of frustration around the squad that they have such a narrow lead when it could have been more, it is something to hold on to nonetheless.

The opening stages of the game are likely to be crucial.

Following that defeat to Swansea at Anfield, not to mention the fact that Saints beat Liverpool so recently, there will be nerves there.

Make no mistake, this is still a big deal for the Liverpool side, and while Saints go there with a sense of confidence, it is the Reds who have the most to lose.

Saints are underdogs. Puel has made that point loud and clear in the build-up. He is trying to make sure it is a case of pressure off for his squad as much as possible.

There is, and will be, no escaping the favourites tag hung around Liverpool’s neck They are expected to make it to Wembley, to give Jurgen Klopp a first chance of some silverware since taking charge.

Saints need to try and use that to their advantage.

While at times their style of play has been criticised this season, it does look like a very viable game plan in this situation.

Saints have to try and keep things very tight from the kick-off.

Liverpool will most likely come out of the blocks flying, trying to get an early goal to level the tie on aggregate and put themselves in a position to win with relative ease.

However, it might not take too long for the doubts to creep in if Saints can hold them at bay.

You can almost feel the kind of atmosphere that might creep in if after half an hour the game is still goalless. The longer that goes on, the better Saints’ chances of making it through.

To achieve that of course won’t be easy.

Though Liverpool’s attack is missing the dynamic threat of the pace of Sadio Mane with the former Saints man away on Africa Cup of Nations duty, they still pose plenty of problems.

Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho offer a real and present danger, and there is more in reserve too.

Saints will likely try and sit deep, allow little space between the lines and challenge Liverpool to break them down in the way so many sides have done at St Mary’s this season.

It is difficult to do, as we have often seen, and even for the best sides. Liverpool did not play at all well by their own standards at St Mary’s in the first leg, but they certainly couldn’t find a way through Saints.

Saints will have a threat on the counter attack, and Claude Puel may well try and get Shane Long and Nathan Redmond in the team as they offer that fluid and quick breakaway option.

You would imagine that is Saints’ best chance of scoring, drawing Liverpool out and hitting them on the break. It will be much harder if Saints don’t defend well and end up in a situation where they have to chase the game.

Liverpool may well opt for a very aggressive high press, which would clearly make things difficult as Saints will struggle to keep possession for spells to ease the pressure, but it does make counter attacking a more effective prospect.

When all is said and done, Puel is correct. Saints are not the favourites to get through.

But, then, they weren’t the favourites in the first leg at St Mary’s and they might have done even better than a 1-0 win.

It will be hard to get through, but there is no doubt they have a decent enough chance if they can perform at their very best.

THE Premier League transfer window is open once again - could we see more shocking transfers similar to these?

“Southampton star Virgil van Dijk has been ruled out for up to three months with an ankle injury”

Saints boss Claude Puel knew he’d be without his key man for tonight’s EFL Cup semi-final clash with Liverpool but it’s now worse than first feared.

Van Dijk could be sidelined until the final month of the season.

The Sun add that the 25-year-old’s injury also rules out a January move to Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City or Everton.

Charlie Nicholas delivers his EFL Cup predictions: These teams will reach the final

Show/hide article…

Southampton travel to Liverpool with a 1-0 advantage tonight, while Manchester United defend a 2-0 lead at Hull. And pundit Nicholas is backing Liverpool to turn the scoreline around and reach the final - with Philippe Coutinho’s return being the key. “People will look at what Swansea did and think Southampton are a far better side so have a good chance, but the sign of a big side is that they produce a big reaction to that sort of result,” Nicholas told Sky Sports. "Philippe Coutinho has more minutes under his belt and Roberto Firmino is back in the goals, while Joel Matip, who is Liverpool’s best central defender, will surely come in to shore up their defence. "Rather than bring in Daniel Sturridge or Divock Origi, I think they should play Lucas and shift everybody up the pitch.

“I’ve got a feeling Mourinho will make a few changes and I think this could be a good night for Marcus Rashford to turn up” “If Southampton get through the first 25-30 minutes then they’ve got a chance, but I just think Liverpool are going to come out of the blocks with the anger and emotion of the Anfield crowd behind them.” Nicholas reckons United will progress to face Liverpool in the final. The former Arsenal star says Jose Mourinho will ring the changes and he expects Marcus Rashford to shine against Hull. “Nobody can have a go at Hull. They’re trying their best for Marco Silva, as they did for Mike Phelan, and they have great spirit, but if you’re asking them to turn around a two-goal deficit against Manchester United then you’re asking too much,” Nicholas added. "Jose Mourinho’s side deserved at least a draw from Stoke because they did play well. They’ve also got this never-say-die attitude back in their make-up.

"However, I don’t see it being a night where they need it. There’s not enough goals in this Hull side and they’ll need a tremendous amount of luck. "I think Hull will be caught in two minds as to whether they really go for it or whether they keep it tight and try to do something as the game goes on, and I’m expecting United to pick them off. "Hull don’t really have many options but having Robert Snodgrass back would be a boost. I’ve only met him briefly but I don’t think he is the type of lad who would refuse to play even if he did want to leave. “I’ve got a feeling Mourinho will make a few changes and I think this could be a good night for Marcus Rashford to turn up.”
