Sims: It’s been a smooth transition into the first team

Show/hide article…

Though the 19-year-old admits his progression into Claude Puel’s set-up has been relatively straightforward.

“The club are really good at progressing young players,” Sims starts.

“So it’s been a very smooth transition through into the first team. I think that’s because of the training, the staff and the players here.

“Everyone is so welcoming and that makes the whole process much easier. Even the more senior players that have been here a while; everyone is so welcoming and you don’t feel out of place.”

Sims rose to prominence in late November, when he assisted Charlie Austin’s winner just 41 seconds into his Premier League debut against Everton.

The agile winger has since built on that performance and made eight appearances for the first team – a number he hopes to increase before the end of the season.

“I just want to keep progressing until the end of the season,” Sim continues.

“Hopefully I can keep improving and getting some more first-team appearances under my belt.

“My long-term goal is to nail a place down in the first team. I’ve obviously got a lot of steps to get there, but every day I keep training and working harder so that is my target.”

Southampton FC transfer news: Saints still chasing Napoli striker Manolo Gabbiadini but won’t pay more than £13m

Show/hide article…

Southampton will not up their offer of £13million for Napoli striker Manolo Gabbiadini.

The Saints are trying to bring in a forward during the current transfer window as they continue to cope without the injured Charlie Austin.

Gabbiadini is their preferred target and reports last Friday claimed they had submitted an offer of £13m.

That is some way short of Napoli’s £20m asking price, though, and the Italian club are expected to reject the bid.

However, according to Corriere dello Sport, the Serie A side need to be wary of snubbing the approach as Southampton will not up their offer.

At present, Saints are the only club to make a formal bid for Gabbiadini and as such they are refusing to pay over the odds for his services.

Liverpool v Southampton Team News: Boost for Reds but blow for Saints ahead of EFL Cup tie

Show/hide article…

The two Premier League rivals go head-to-head at Anfield tomorrow night with the Saints holding the advantage after their 1-0 win on the south coast in the first leg. Jurgen Klopp has been boosted with the news that defender Joel Matip is set to make his return for Liverpool. The centre-back has not been in the starting line-up since December 11 because of injury and uncertainty over his eligibility after not playing for Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations.

But he is now fully available and played an hour for the Under-23s on Sunday. Jordan Henderson has been playing with a heel problem but he is expected to play. Southampton will await results of a scan on Virgil van Dijk to find out whether the defender will play in the cup clash.

The Saints captain hobbled off in the 55th minute during their 3-0 Premier League win over Leicester on Sunday and remains a doubt for their trip to Merseyside. Should Van Dijk miss out, England Under-21 international Jack Stephens, who came on as a substitute for the Dutchman, could deputise for Claude Puel’s side. Ryan Bertrand and Dusan Tadic should keep their places in the starting XI while Steven Davis could recover from a knock which has caused him to miss their last few games.

Liverpool squad revealed ahead of Southampton clash

Show/hide article…

Joel Matip is set to make his return to the Liverpool team for the EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Southampton.

The central defender has not been in the starting line-up since December 11 because of injury and uncertainty over his eligibility following his withdrawal from the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon.

But fully fit after playing an hour for the Under-23s on Sunday and with the dispute now resolved the 25-year-old is now available for Wednesday’s clash.

Matip was on the bench for the game with Swansea this weekend but was only used in the latter stages.

And Klopp explained his decision: "The problem was we have training and I have to prepare a team.

"Between the two games [against Plymouth and Swansea] we had two sessions to prepare for this game properly and he was not involved because I couldn’t expect that I can use him.

"I was concentrating on the players I could use.

"For us it was too late actually, yesterday, but we could take him to the hotel, he’s in the squad so it’s all good.

“But from a football perspective, it was too late.”

Captain Jordan Henderson is a possible doubt with a persistent heel problem but he is expected to play.

Ross McCormack struggles with gate – and 10 of the other worst excuses used in sport

Show/hide article…

Aston Villa forward Ross McCormack upset manager Steve Bruce last week after failing to make training because he could not escape from his gated-mansion, but why? He could not open the electric gates, obviously. Telegraph Sport recalls 10 other ludicrous excuses sports men and women have used over the years …

During last year’s Miami Open, the Scot noticed that he had been serving, and losing points, with balls usually reserved for the women’s game. “The women’s balls are very different to the men’s balls,” he commented after winning the match against Denis Istomin. “They’re much quicker, smaller, livelier.”

TV information for Liverpool vs Southampton

Show/hide article…

Southampton visit Anfield on Wednesday night with a place at Wembley up for grabs.

Claude Puel’s men take a slender 1-0 lead to Liverpool as the Premier League pair vie for a place in the EFL Cup final.

Nathan Redmond scored the only goal at St Mary’s, as Jurgen Klopp’s side look to quickly bounce back from the 3-2 loss at home to Swansea at the weekend.

Manchester United or Hull will face the winners of the tie, so one manager will lifting his first trophy with his current side.

But how can you watch the fun and games at Anfield? Here’s all you need to know…

The match will be shown live on Sky Sports 2.

It kicks off at Anfield at 8pm.

Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip is set to return after injury and uncertainty over his eligibility following Cameroon’s involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Jordan Henderson has a heel complaint, but is expected to play.

Defender Virgil van Dijk is awaiting the results of a scan after hobbling off in the 55th minute during the 3-0 win over Leicester at the weekend. England Under-21 international Jack Stephens is on standby to replace him.

Steven Davis could be back after a knock, as Claude Puel gets set to play his strongest XI.

Jurgen Klopp has urged his players to “enjoy” the pressure of Wednesday’s game.

“We spoke about this and a few other things - it’s about enjoying the role we have,” he explained.

“We are Liverpool, and a really good football-playing side, and we don’t enjoy the job we have to do.

"If you are another team at the bottom of the league, then we have to defend 80 to 90 per cent of the time, and 10 per cent, you can invest in counter-attacks and sometimes a set-piece.

“In our job, in 70 to 80 per cent of all games, we are dominant. So we have to enjoy this, even when we don’t come through after five minutes. That’s how it is. That’s the job to do.”

Southampton still negotiating deal for Napoli’s Manolo Gabbiadini - Sky sources

Show/hide article…

Southampton are continuing negotiations with Napoli to sign striker Manolo Gabbiadini, according to Sky in Italy.

The two clubs failed to agree a fee during talks on Monday. Saints are offering the Italians £13m, but Napoli are holding out for £17m.

Sky sources understand Southampton are unlikely to go higher than the £13m they have offered. German clubs Schalke and Borussia Monchengladbach are also interested in the player.

Southampton are short of options up front, with Charlie Austin out of action until April with a shoulder injury and Sofiane Boufal away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Gabbiadini, 25, has played six times for Italy, scoring once, and 13 times - six of them off the bench - for Napoli this season, scoring three times.

All you need to know from Liverpool vs Southampton

Show/hide article…

The race for the season’s first piece of major silverware is hotting up, with Liverpool and Southampton locking horns on Wednesday night as they bid for a place at Wembley.

Saints took a 1-0 advantage to Anfield after their narrow win in the EFL Cup semi-final first-leg at St Mary’s and will be hoping to inflict a second straight Anfield defeat for Jurgen Klopp’s men following their shock 3-2 reverse to Swansea on Saturday.

Awaiting the winners will be either Manchester United or Hull, as one of the four managers gets set to lift their first trophy with their current club.

But when is the match and where can you watch it? Here’s all you need to know…

The match will be shown live on Sky Sports 2.

EFL Cup semi-final preview: Liverpool v Southampton

Show/hide article…

Joel Matip is set to make his first start in more than a month as Liverpool face Southampton in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday, live on Sky Sports.

The defender has not been named in the starting line-up since December 11 due to injury and then uncertainty over his eligibility due to the Africa Cup of Nations.

However, after FIFA confirmed he is eligible to play, Matip is set to return after coming on as a late substitute in the 3-2 defeat to Swansea on Saturday and then featuring for an hour for the Under-23s on Sunday.

Liverpool trail 1-0 from the first leg at St Mary’s and have won just once in six games in all competitions in 2017.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed there was a team meeting following the home loss to Swansea.

“It was because the goals we have conceded in 2017 have been a little bit of the same story,” he said. "The influence of throw-ins is a little bit too big on the goals we concede. It’s not that teams create a lot of chances against us.

“A few weeks ago, everybody spoke about the goalkeeper. That has absolutely no influence on the goals we’re conceding at the moment. We can’t say it’s only the centre-half. Very often, the last mistake happens in this region, but that would be too easy.”

Southampton, who had chances to win by a greater margin in the first leg, have conceded just one goal in their last four matches in all competitions.

They also beat Leicester 3-0 on Sunday to record their first Premier League victory for a month.

“It will be important to score away,” said Saints manager Claude Puel. “And to stay focused about our game - not just to think about the result or just defending.”

Liverpool have no fresh injury concerns for the semi-final second leg.

Matip is available and captain Jordan Henderson is expected to play even though he has a heel problem.

Southampton will await results of a scan on Virgil van Dijk to assess whether he will be fit.

The Saints captain hobbled off in the 55th minute during their win over Leicester and remains a doubt.

Should Van Dijk miss out, England Under-21 international Jack Stephens, who came on as a substitute for the Dutchman, could deputise.

Ryan Bertrand and Dusan Tadic should keep their places in the starting XI as Puel confirmed that he will play his strongest side at Anfield, while Steven Davis could recover from a knock which has caused him to miss their last few games.

This is the fifth time Liverpool have gone into a League Cup second leg with a deficit - however, on the last two occasions they have recovered to reach the final, doing so against Crystal Palace in 2000/01 and Sheffield United in 2002/03.

Saints are aiming to reach the final of the League Cup for only the second time - in 1978/79 they eliminated Leeds in the semi-finals before losing to Nottingham Forest in the final.

The Reds have won three of their four home League Cup matches against Southampton, most recently a 3-1 victory in November 2002 with goals from Patrik Berger, El Hadji Diouf and Milan Baros.

Southampton have won their last three away League Cup matches against top-flight opposition, defeating Arsenal (2014/15 and 2016/17) and Stoke (2014/15); prior to this run, they’d won just two of the previous 27.

Only Aston Villa (82) and Arsenal (78) have won more home League Cup matches than Liverpool (75).

Six of the last eight teams to win the first leg of the League Cup semi-final at home by a one-goal margin have been eliminated - only Sunderland in 2013/14 and Spurs in 2014/15 have then reached the final.

Liverpool haven’t lost back to back League Cup matches since 2005, when they lost to Chelsea in the 2004/05 final followed by a Round 3 defeat to Crystal Palace in October.

The Reds haven’t failed to score in back to back League Cup games since August 1979, when they went five matches without a goal.

Watch Liverpool v Southampton live on Sky Sports 1 HD from 7.30pm on Wednesday.
