Puel: I have total confidence in Stephens

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel insists he has total confidence in Jack Stephens as the 22-year-old centre half prepares for the biggest game of his life in the League Cup semi-final second leg at Anfield.

Virgil van Dijk is a major doubt for tomorrow’s match after being forced off in the win over Leicester with an injury to his left foot.

The Dutchman has undergone a scan but with the bruising and swelling still a problem, the chances of him making the tie against Liverpool, which Saints go into with a 1-0 lead, appear to be slim.

If van Dijk doesn’t make it then Stephens will be handed the chance to partner Maya Yoshida in the heart of the Saints defence.

Puel has faith Stephens is up to the task, despite the fact he would be making just his fourth start for the club.

“For all the players it’s the same. It’s an important game, an exciting game and fantastic to play this game,” said the Saints boss.

“Just positive things to play this game and for Jack it is the same thing.

“If he has to play this game I think he will play with a good spirit and calm and he’s a good player, an international under-21 and now important games and he has quality.

“I have all my confidence with Jack. It’s not a problem for me. If he has to play he will play with a good spirit and a good mentality.”

Stephens came through the youth ranks at Plymouth and played a handful of first team games for the club before moving to Saints for £150,000.

After loan spells at Swindon, Middlesbrough and Coventry, he made his first Premier League appearance earlier this month, but now looks set to be thrust into a massive night for Saints.

“It’s a good defender, he’s intelligent, he can anticipate the action with a good position, very good technical and for me it’s important to start the play, to have confidence, and to anticipate all the situations,” reckoned Puel, who is also waiting on the fitness of Steven Davis.

“I think with for example Maya they play together against Norwich and it was a good feeling, good possibilities, and they have habits also in the training session because we change often the possibility and the team in the training sessions to have this possibility to know the positions and the feeling between them. I think it’s always important.

“I’m confident it’s a good player and we see him with the under-21s also at home and it was a good game, he was the best player of the England team.

“I repeat, I am confident with him like the other players.”

He added: “It’s a competition since the beginning we played with young players.

“The last qualifier against Arsenal away it was a strong game with young players who can do a fantastic result, good level, focus just about their game, their play, and this is the most important.

“They took confidence between them and they have different habits in training sessions and in the play to give a good answer. It’s not a problem.

“For Jack and for all the other players it’s just to think about our game and a strong game together and we will see the result at the final.”

Saints urged to attack at Anfield

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has urged Saints not just to defend their one goal lead against Liverpool as he believes they will need to score at Anfield tomorrow night if they are to reach Wembley.

The Saints boss is gearing up for the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-final, with many predicting his side will just try to shut down the game to protect their narrow advantage.

However, Puel is adamant his side need to be prepared to attack as well when the time is right, and thinks they will need to find a way through Jurgen Klopp’s side if they are to make a first major final in 14 years.

He said: “It’s an important game, exciting. It will be a good thing to win against Leicester to prepare with a good attitude and a good spirit this game.

“Liverpool will have one day more recovery and it’s important with all these games.

“It’s a good thing for the confidence with the last game to stop these four lost in the Premier League and it was interesting of course to prepare this game in a good mentality.

“We know this game will be difficult against a great team, great players. They lost their last game in the Premier League against Swansea and they will want to react and of course to do a second leg with a strong game.

“It’s important for us to stay with good focus about our game, our play, to play with good calm and quality and not think of a good result.

“We are in a situation it is not efficient to stay just one goal up.

“It will be important to score other goal away.”

He added: “We will have a good team and a strong team to defend this result, and not just to defend this result but to attack also and play a strong game like the first leg.

“It will be difficult of course and Liverpool will be favourite but it’s football and all is possible.”

Puel was asked about the possibility of following in the footsteps of Lawrie McMenemy and Gordon Strachan in leading Saints to a major final, but refused to entertain the prospect.

“It is not possible for me to think about the final before we play the second leg,” he insisted.

“It would be a mistake to think about the final and to dream to win this, because for the moment we are nothing. It is one leg, one goal up.

“You know this game can do the difference against any team, any player.

“They have solutions and great players and it’s important to stay with a good focus about this game and our ability and capacity to play a strong game.

“Not just in defence because it is not efficient to just keep the same result in defence, but to stay strong and push them for a strong game with all the team together.”

Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu targets EFL Cup and FA Cup success

Show/hide article…

Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu is targeting success in both the EFL Cup and FA Cup this week as they face Liverpool and Arsenal in the respective competitions.

The Saints travel to Anfield in the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-finals and hold a 1-0 aggregate advantage following the first meeting two weeks ago.

If they beat the Reds, they will set up a Wembley final with either Manchester United or Hull, with an FA Cup fourth-round fixture with Arsenal swiftly following on Saturday evening.

Despite the games coming thick and fast, Romeu is targeting victories in each, starting with the clash against Liverpool live on Sky Sports on Wednesday evening.

“I think we had a very good game at home and with good chances to score but the result in the end was very good,” he told Sky Sports News HQ.

"It will be tough because Anfield always puts everything into those games but we are having a good run. We want to be positive because going there, we are one step from the final and I think that is very important for us and the club.

"The atmosphere will be amazing. It is one of those games that a player always wants to play in and we have to enjoy it but work hard as well.

"They will push from the first minute. They have to score and put a little bit more risk into their game and we need to play with that. We need to be clever.

“If we score, we can be in a very good position to go through so we need to play with that as well and hopefully everything goes well.”

Southampton have knocked out Saturday’s opponents Arsenal of the EFL Cup this season, winning 2-0 in the quarter-finals in November.

Romeu is hoping to use the result as a springboard to pick up a fourth-round FA Cup victory, and says the club are hoping to go as far as they can in the competition.

“I think we’ve been trying to be good in every competition. Sadly, we couldn’t do it in the Europa League group stage but we’ve been trying to play our best in every game,” he added.

"We’ve been rotating a lot with all the squad involved and having so many games so it has been very good. It had been very positive to get to the semi-finals and to get into the next round of the FA Cup.

"It will also be tough against Arsenal and they will come here to win. We also had another cup game this year and we could beat them so hopefully we can do it again.

“We always say we want to get as far as we can and hopefully get to the final [of the EFL Cup] and win something for the club because it would be amazing.”

Watch Southampton in action in the EFL Cup against Liverpool live on Sky Sports 1 on Wednesday from 7.30pm.

Jurgen Klopp sends message to Liverpool players ahead of Southampton clash

Show/hide article…

Jurgen Klopp held a heart to heart with his players on Sunday, where he told them: “You have to enjoy being Liverpool”.

The Reds boss called his players into a specially convened meeting at the club’s training ground, where he and his shellshocked staff picked through the ashes of a defeat by Swansea which torched their title hopes.

Klopp revealed that he warned the entire team they must take collective responsibility for defensive mistakes which he admits have cost the club in recent weeks.

But it was the mentality in dealing with the pressure when so many sides come to Anfield to defend – as Southampton will surely do in the EFL Cup semi final – that he focussed on.

“We spoke about this and a few other things - it’s about enjoying the role we have,” he explained.

“We are Liverpool, and a really good football-playing side, and we don’t enjoy the job we have to do.

"If you are another team at the bottom of the league, then we have to defend 80 to 90 per cent of the time, and 10 per cent, you can invest in counter-attacks and sometimes a set-piece.

“In our job, in 70 to 80 per cent of all games, we are dominant. So we have to enjoy this, even when we don’t come through after five minutes. That’s how it is. That’s the job to do.”

While Klopp believes that his biggest problem may be the players’ reaction when the Anfield crowd goes quiet, he revealed that his primary focus in the meeting was on the defensive deficiencies that were again exposed at the weekend.

And he explained that he and his staff wanted a clear the air meeting to try to address some of the repeat mistakes the players are making.

“We have a lot of meetings. It was because the goals we have conceded in 2017 have been a little bit of the same story,” Klopp added.

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol says Reds’ leaky defence will cost them shot at Premier League title

“The influence of throw-ins is a little bit too big on the goals we concede. It’s not that teams create a lot of chances against us. That’s still a good sign. Usually, they don’t create a lot and still score.

“There has been a lot of talk about defence, you always speak about players - I speak about the whole defensive work of the team.

“The final mistake in the game, sometimes keeper, sometimes defender, whoever, there were eight people involved and then the last person can not make the mistake. It was not one person, and we need to learn that”

Klopp will ask his side to go out against Saints and show the courage to take the pressure from the crowd, even if they become nervous or silent.

“Against Swansea, it was really quiet eh, it is not a criticism, but we have to learn as a team. The body language of my team they even thought: ahhhh. But they have to learn.”

Van Dijk doubtful for Southampton’s League Cup semi-final

Show/hide article…

Southampton hold a one-goal advantage going into the tie, but the loss of former captain Jose Fonte, who has moved to West Ham United, coupled with the injury to Van Dijk, could leave them short of experienced cover in the heart of defence.

“Van Dijk, he is having a scan and I am waiting for the results at the moment,” Puel told the club website (www.southamptonfc.com).

“It’s not serious, but I don’t know if he can participate in this game. We will see in the next days before the game.”

Midfielder Steven Davis, who has been injured since Southampton beat Liverpool 1-0 in the semi-final first leg on Jan. 11, could return in time for Wednesday’s match after stepping up his recovery.

“It’s better for Davis,” Puel added. “We will see in the training session if he can participate in this game or not.”

Southampton sweating on fitness of Virgil van Dijk for EFL semi-final

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel is sweating on the fitness of Virgil van Dijk ahead of the crucial EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool on Wednesday.

Saints hold a slender 1-0 advantage heading to Anfield as they seek to reach their first major cup final since 2003, but they may have to do without the Dutchman who picked up an ankle knock during their 3-0 win over Leicester on Sunday.

Van Dijk’s injury took the gloss off Southampton’s impressive victory at St Mary’s, which marked the end of a torrid run of four straight defeats in the Premier League.

Despite the 25-year-old indicating on his Twitter account that the setback is not too serious, Puel is uncertain on whether the defender will travel with the team to Merseyside.

“It was a good kick (on his ankle),” Puel said. "He couldn’t continue the game yesterday, for example.

“It is not serious but I do not know if he can participate for this game. He is having a scan and I will wait for the results at the moment.”

Following Jose Fonte’s £8m transfer to West Ham last week, Puel named Van Dijk as the new team captain at St Mary’s.

The 55-year-old boss says the decision was easy to make, but dismissed the notion that the captaincy was an attempt to persuade the Holland international to stay at the club.

“Easy? Of course,” Puel added. "Jose left Southampton and Virgil will be the captain with Steven Davis.

"Captain to stay? No. It is natural when Jose did not play in the beginning of the season, Virgil, Steven or Maya Yoshida will be the captain.

"I think it is normal. Virgil will stay captain of the team. I think it is important because he has good values and, for example, during training sessions, on the pitch and in the dressing room.

“We have a good mentality in the squad and I think different players can bring an impact.”

Southampton’s opponents Liverpool have failed to win a league game in 2017 and suffered a shock 3-2 home defeat against struggling Swansea on Saturday.

Puel could become the first manager since Gordon Strachan to lead the Saints to a major final but the Frenchman insists he is not looking ahead to Wembley just yet.

“I cannot think about this,” he said. "I cannot think about the final before we play in the second leg.

"It will be a mistake to think about the final because, for the moment, (we are) just one goal up and Liverpool can make the difference against any team.

"It is important to stay with a good focus for this game. Not just in defence but it is important to play, to score and to push them.

"We know this game will be difficult against a good team and good players. They lost to Swansea and they will want to react and play well in the second leg but it is important to stay with a good focus and mentality.

“We are in the situation where I think it is not sufficient. It is just a one-goal lead so I think it will be important to score one more goal.”

Stat Pack: Liverpool vs Saints

Show/hide article…

Southampton will be aiming to reach the final of the League Cup for only the second time. In 1978/79 they were beaten by Nottingham Forest in the final, having seen off Leeds in the previous round.

This is the fifth time that Liverpool are heading into a League Cup semi-final second leg with a deficit. They did however turn the previous two ties around, against Crystal Palace and Sheffield United.

Southampton have won one of their previous four League Cup away matches against Liverpool. It was a third round clash in November 1960, with Saints winning 2-1.

The Reds haven’t failed to score in back-to-back League Cup games since August 1979, when they went five matches without a goal.

Only Aston Villa (82) and Arsenal (78) have won more home League Cup matches than Liverpool (75).

Southampton will need to become just the third side in the last nine to win the first leg of a League Cup semi-final at home by a one-goal margin and go through. Only Sunderland in 2013/14 and Spurs in 2014/15 have then reached the final.

Southampton have won their last three away League Cup matches against top-flight opposition, defeating Arsenal (2014/15 and 2016/17) and Stoke (2014/15).

Southampton are yet to concede a goal in this season’s EFL Cup, having kept clean sheets against Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Arsenal and Liverpool.

A fifth clean sheet in this season’s competition would see Southampton become only the fifth top-flight side in Liverpool’s last 54 home League Cup matches to keep them at bay.
