Claudio Ranieri takes full responsibility for Leicester’s capitulation at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Claudio Ranieri shouldered full responsibility for Leicester’s 3-0 Premier League capitulation at Southampton, then admitted the Foxes have dropped into a relegation dogfight.

Leicester equalled the worst record after 22 games of any top-flight defending champions in England, sitting alongside Ipswich’s struggles from the 1962-63 campaign.

Ipswich avoided the drop by finishing 17th that term, but Ranieri has accepted his Leicester side are now fighting for their Premier League future.

James Ward-Prowse, Jay Rodriguez and Dusan Tadic condemned Leicester to their 11th defeat in 22 league matches on the south coast, leaving boss Ranieri to admit he should not have tinkered with his side’s tactics.

Asked if Leicester are now in a relegation battle, Ranieri replied: "Yes of course, and it’s for this reason that I’ve wanted 40 points all along from the start of the season.

"Look, our goal, our target is 40 points, from the beginning of the season.

“I said this from the beginning, and I maintain the focus on 40 points, it’s important to achieve that as soon as possible.”

Leicester’s woeful south-coast showing raised real fears the Foxes could become the first top-flight champions to suffer relegation since Manchester City in 1938.

Ranieri moved to ease criticism away from his players however, insisting he had been at fault for shifting their tactics away from the 4-4-2 formation that drove last term’s title heroics.

“I tried to help my players in the last two matches, I changed our normal shape against Chelsea, to three at the back and today I played with a diamond, and this led to some misunderstanding,” said Ranieri.

"My players are used to playing 4-4-2, or 4-2-3-1, so for this reason I have made mistakes and it’s my fault in the last two matches.

"It’s one thing trying it in training and another entirely on the pitch.

"Today there was something wrong and it’s my responsibility. If we make mistakes, yes they make mistakes but also it’s myself who has to explain better.

"I recognise they felt better and feel better with a 4-4-2, 4-4-1-1. They recognise the shape, the movement and can help each other.

"Today they ran a lot but without a point of reference.

“I changed it because it wasn’t so good and I wanted to help them. But my idea to help them was wrong, it’s much better to continue with what they recognise, and then we can be better.”

Southampton’s cruise-control victory was tempered only by an ankle injury to talisman centre back Virgil van Dijk.

The captain hobbled off in the second-half to become an immediate doubt for Wednesday’s EFL Cup semi-final second leg at Liverpool.

Now that Jose Fonte has left for West Ham in an £8million deal, England Under-21 international Jack Stephens could start that cup clash at Anfield.

“Virgil took a big kick and we will see if we can recover him for this game,” said manager Claude Puel.

"I hope we can have Virgil of course because he is our captain and he’s an important player. Of course, it will be better to recover Vigil for this game.

"He could not continue the game. We will see for the next games, I don’t know if he can recover.

"For Jack (Stephens) it’s been an opportunity to pay and show all his qualities.

"He is an under-21 international player, and other players can give a good solution and play at a good level.

"It is the same for Jack, but he hasn’t had the opportunities since the beginning of the season with Jose, Maya (Yoshida) and Virgil - three good players - which is difficult for a young player.

“So this is confidence for the player.”

Premier League clubs eye Olympiakos star Luka Milivojevic - sources

Show/hide article…

Premier League clubs including Hull City, Southampton, Watford and Sunderland are weighing up a move for Olympiakos midfielder Luka Milivojevic, sources close to the Greek club have told ESPN FC.

Defensive midfielder Milivojevic has impressed since joining Olympiakos from Anderlecht in summer 2015.

The 25-year-old has established himself as a key member of the side and a regular in the Serbia team.

Milivojevic has scored five goals in 16 Greek Super League games to help Olympiakos to the top of the table.

A number of Premier League clubs have been monitoring his progress, with Leicester City and West Ham United having also been reported to be interested.

Hull are in the market for midfield reinforcements after Jake Livermore moved to West Bromich Albion and boss Marco Silva knows all about Milivojevic, having signed him for Olympiakos.

Twelve months ago Leicester were top of the table - now they are in free fall

Show/hide article…

This time last year Leicester went top of the Premier League and didn’t look back.

Fast forward 12 months and looking back is exactly what they are doing – over their shoulders.

The Foxes are in free fall and need no telling about how powerful momentum is.

Last season it helped carry them towards their incredible title triumph.

Now it is dragging them towards danger and much more of this and the five-point cushion between them and the bottom three might soon be wiped out.

In another huge contrast to last term, Leicester at home is the ideal fixture for any team in need of points and their visit to St Mary’s could hardly have been better-timed for Southampton .

Claude Puel’s men had lost their previous four games and desperately needed a victory.

And it duly came with minimal fuss thanks to goals from James Ward-Prowse, Jay Rodriguez and Dusan Tadic in a perfect warm-up for Wednesday’s EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool.

It is now 11 league games without an away win for Leicester who had the best record on their travels during their title winning campaign but now have the second worst.

Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri attempted to protect his players by holding his hands up after this defeat, which left them with the joint-worst points return of defending champions after 22 games since Ipswich in 1962/63.

He could easily have hung them out to dry.

Given Foxes Never Quit, as they have enjoyed telling the world over the last couple of seasons, they have a funny way of showing it.

Their limp surrender here was their latest alarming showing of their shocking title defence.

They made countless errors at the back as Southampton carved them apart at will.

The rock-solid showings of last season are a distant memory.

Their midfield did little to help Leicester’s cause at either end.

In attack Demarai Gray was the only bright spark but even he was wasteful.

The lack of complaint or sign of frustration and fight from Jamie Vardy when Gray chose to shoot rather than pass to him when he was unmarked at the far post should concern Ranieri as much as the fact the England man didn’t have a single shot on goal all game.

As bad as Leicester were, Southampton were impressive, especially during the first half, as they punished the woeful Foxes.

Ranieri’s decision to play a diamond midfield backfired and left his full-backs exposed. He tried to change it in the first half to a 4-1-4-1 but by then the damage was done.

It was no surprise when Southampton punished them down the flanks for the opener when Cedric Soares got in behind Christian Fuchs and crossed for Ward-Prowse to fire them into a 1-0 lead.

Rodriguez then pounced on Roberth Huth’s poor attempted header clear to rifle in Southampton’s second just before half-time.

And Leicester’s defensive horror-show was complete not long before the final whistle.

Wes Morgan got off the hook when his 74th minute his own-goal was chalked off for offside.

But ten minutes later he bundled over sub Shane Long and Tadic smashed in the penalty.

Underdogs Southampton, Celta Vigo enter cup second legs with slight edge

Show/hide article…

Wednesday’s EFL Cup semifinal second leg between Liverpool and Southampton is deliciously poised. The Saints take a 1-0 first leg advantage to Anfield to face a Reds outfit who have looked out of sorts in recent weeks. Jurgen Klopp’s men claimed a creditable 1-1 draw at Old Trafford a week last Sunday but have also suffered defeats to Southampton and Swansea in recent times. Their 3-2 reverse at home to struggling Swansea on Saturday was a shocker as they threw in yet another defensive horror show. It should have been straightforward, as the best attack in the Premier League went up against the worst defence but it proved anything but as Liverpool were humbled at Anfield in a league game against the Swans for the first time ever.

Southampton were good value for that 1-0 first leg win and in truth could have won by a bigger margin. It’s difficult to see how Klopp can iron out Liverpool’s obvious defensive deficiencies in just a few days and that’s why the Saints might be worth siding with at 10/11 here with bet365 to qualify. Away goals would count at the end of extra-time if the aggregate scores are level and therefore Southampton would be in the box seat with a goal on Merseyside. They hammered Leicester City 3-0 on Sunday and Claude Puel’s men have a real chance of making it to Wembley as things stand.

The second semifinal should see Manchester United progress without much fuss, holding as they do a 2-0 first leg advantage against Hull City. The Red Devils were not at their best at Old Trafford but still had too much for a game but limited Hull side, who will surely now be making Premier League survival their top priority. While Hull could ring the changes don’t expect United to take their foot off the gas here as Jose Mourinho looks to bag a major trophy in his first season as Manchester United boss. They have the strength in depth to do a job on Hull and if you fancy another 2-0 stroll for the Red Devils you can get 13/2 with bet365.

There is also Copa del Rey quarterfinal action over in Spain this week where Real Madrid face a tough task to overturn a 2-1 first leg deficit against Celta Vigo. Madrid had a 40-game unbeaten run snapped by Sevilla and then lost to Celta at the Bernabeu just days later with former Liverpool striker Iago Aspas on target for the visitors. It means they take a slender advantage back to Galicia and they are not without hope of upsetting Los Blancos again here. Madrid have a mounting injury crisis and Ronaldo was whistled by the fans as his bang average start to 2017 continued in their 2-1 win over Malaga on Saturday. The recent Ballon d’Or winner has only scored once from open play since November and looked sluggish again at the weekend. Zinedine Zidane has even urged fans to lay off his star striker, asking them to “have patience” while also bemoaning the fact that the injuries are piling up for his side.

It should be a crackling atmosphere at the Balaidos and all results are still possible. However, Celta Vigo are a decent outfit, like to get at teams and are very well organised on home soil. With this in mind there may be some mileage in punting the draw on Wednesday at 3/1 with bet365.
