Claudio Ranieri shoulders the blame as Leicester slump to another away defeat at Southampton

Show/hide article…

It is a measure of how far Leicester City have fallen since their title triumph that, two goals down at half-time at St Mary’s, there was not even a glimmer of hope that they would produce a stirring comeback.

What a contrast that was with this fixture last season, when they were trailing by the same scoreline but stormed back to seal a point through a late brace by Jamie Vardy. There was to be no storm this time, just a darkening cloud over the head of their manager Claudio Ranieri.

This was a day to forget for him, and for Vardy, too. Having terrorised Southampton’s backline here last season and flown to the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts in the process, the England striker was reduced to feeding off scraps as Leicester were downed by goals from James Ward-Prowse and Jay Rodriguez before a late Dusan Tadic penalty brought a sorry end to a miserable day.

The champions have now conceded more goals this season than they did throughout the whole of their title-winning campaign. Their fans may be looking forward to the next step of their Champions League adventure, but after this they must also be glancing nervously at the teams below them in the league table.

They sit just five points clear of the relegation zone, and Swansea’s victory at Liverpool will only serve to tighten the knot in their stomachs.

Southampton 3 Leicester 0: Claudio Ranieri admits relegation is realistic

Show/hide article…

The Foxes latest embarrassment saw them stuffed on the south coast by a Southampton side who had previously lost four league games in a row.

Ranieri’s flops have now conceded more goals than in the entirety of their title winning campaign and boast the joint worst points tally for reigning champions after 22 matches with Ipswich’s 1962-63 side.

Ranieri deserted his tried and tested 4-4-2 formation to an experimental three at the back against Chelsea last week and opted for an unfamiliar midfield diamond against Saints.

Neither worked as the Foxes lost both games by three goals and Ranieri holds himself rather than his stars responsible.

The Italian said: “Our goal is 40 points from the start of the season. I maintain the focus on 40 points. It is important to achieve that 40 points as soon as possible. Relegation is realistic that is why I want 40 points.

“I tried to help my players in the last two games and change the shape. Against Chelsea I tried three defenders, today a diamond in midfield but it provoked a misunderstanding.

“It is one thing doing it in training and another on the pitch. Something is wrong and I take responsibility.

Jason Upshall said he was ordered to take part in naked soap and water massages

Show/hide article…

A former youth footballer has said he had a nervous breakdown caused by psychological abuse by a former Southampton FC youth coach.

Jason Upshall claims he suffered abuse from Bob Higgins who coached him in the 1980s.

Mr Higgins was cleared of sexual abuse charges in 1992 and has always denied any wrongdoing.

The allegations will be investigated in BBC Inside Out West at 19:30 GMT on Monday 23 January.

Football abuse victim ‘suffered breakdown’

Show/hide article…

A former youth footballer has said he had a nervous breakdown caused by psychological abuse by a former Southampton FC youth coach.

Jason Upshall is one of two more players to make allegations about Bob Higgins who coached them in the 1980s.

Another man claims he received groin area massages while half naked.

Mr Higgins was cleared of sexual abuse charges in 1992 and has always denied any wrongdoing.

Mr Upshall, 44, from Street, Somerset, was one of a number of young players who were taken on as apprentices at Southampton FC after training at the Bob Higgins Soccer Academy near Bath.

He said he suffered a breakdown months after being ordered to take part in naked soap and water massages with other team mates while on a tour in Sweden with the team in 1988 when he was a young teenager.

"For years I couldn’t eat in front of people. I don’t like crowded rooms.

“I could cry every day, but you can’t let yourself cry.”

Nick Good, 44, from Yate, who also trained in Bath, said he received massages to his groin.

“[We were] naked from the waist down,” he said.

“It was deemed acceptable and a bit of fun. It was sort of a running joke.”

Mr Good said he often stayed overnight at Mr Higgins’ house in Southampton.

"The first time I went there I went into the front room and Bob was there.

"The really bizarre thing is he had two young boys sat either side of him.

“At my age, 12 or 13 at the time, I just accepted it for being ‘that’s what you do’.”

In December it was reported that six former Southampton youth players had made allegations against Mr Higgins.

The BBC has asked Mr Higgins for a comment, but he has not responded.

Previously he has always denied any allegations of wrongdoing.

The allegations of abuse will be investigated in BBC Inside Out West at 19:30 GMT on Monday 23 January.

This Southampton star reminds me of David Beckham - Martin Keown

Show/hide article…

James Ward-Prowse has a similar style to David Beckham, says Martin Keown

Keown watched on in Three Lions training as ex-skipper Beckham strutted his stuff.

Beckham’s legendary free-kicks did the business for both club and country.

That’s according to the England captain’s former international team-mate Martin Keown.

WHICH Premier League stars made our team of the week?

And he reckons Saints star Ward-Prowse has a similar technique to the ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid star.

“He’s got this ability to whip the ball,” he said on Match of the Day 2.

"It’s that whip - it’s a bit like Beckham.

THE VERDICT: Fantastic start to a massive week

Show/hide article…

The most massive of weeks for Saints is off to the perfect start.

If only Saints could play Leicester every game then what a few days it would most likely be.

After four league defeats in a row, Saints really needed to ease the pressure with a home win against a side who have struggled so badly on the road this season.

They also required a confidence boost ahead of the EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday.

Heading there with a one goal lead, and with Liverpool’s patchy recent form, Saints have a real chance to make something meaningful of this season and get to Wembley. It is still a huge ask, but getting to a major final was never meant to be easy.

After Liverpool, Saints host Arsenal in the FA Cup.

There could be so much to look forward to in a week’s time. Or there could be so little with just a midtable slog until the end of the season left.

What Saints had to do was to give themselves a little breathing space, and that meant a win against Leicester, just to ease some nerves and get a sense of momentum into the week.

When you analyse Saints’ top flight season, you note that the majority of the seven wins they have notched from 22 games have come against teams that have played against them the way Leicester did.

It was a crazy game plan that the Foxes attempted. Maybe it is the only way they can play, but it was never likely to succeed.

If you are going to play an attacking game against Saints, you had better be really good at it.

The top sides, who don’t compromise no matter who they are facing, have outgunned Saints playing that way.

West Ham, Everton, Bournemouth and now Leicester, who don’t have that outstanding quality, have all lost attempting to play a more expansive game.

Saints have toiled so much against teams who just look to defend, and been beaten by genuine quality.

What Claude Puel dreams of is a team that comes to St Mary’s and is prepared to be open, but without much of a cutting edge. It’s a three point game for Saints every time.

Thanks, then, to Leicester for doing exactly what Saints wanted at a timely moment in the season.

Saints never looked like they were going to do anything other than collect three points from the off.

They dominated from the start with Nathan Redmond heading over when he should have given Saints the lead after six minutes before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Jay Rodriguez both missed the target from inside the area.

Kasper Schmeichel did well to get down at his near post to deny Redmond before Saints went in front on 20 minutes.

Cedric Soares got on the overlap down the right, and fed the ball back to James Ward-Prowse.

He hit a first time sidefooted shot from just inside the area that moved away from Schmeichel. The big keeper got fingertips to it diving to his right but couldn’t prevent it from going in the far corner.

There was breathing space six minutes before half time as Ward-Prowse whipped in a free kick which Maya Yoshida managed to head down.

Rodriguez arrived right on queue and was able to slam home a finish past Schmeichel.

Leicester had occasionally looked a threat on the break but struggled to turn that into chances, Demarai Gray twice cutting in and firing off target.

The second half was similarly dominant for Saints, albeit it took them until the final minutes to add to their goal tally.

Hojbjerg should have got a goal when Leicester presented him with the ball after trying to play out from the back.

The midfielder was gifted the opportunity to pick his spot from inside the area but failed to hit the target.

Saints briefly thought they had a third when Wes Morgan turned into his own net from Ward-Prowse’s free kick on 75 minutes, but referee Michael Oliver consulted with his linesman and ruled it out for offside against Maya Yoshida, who was tussling with Morgan in the box.

Morgan had already missed Leicester’s best chance by that point, turning over from six yards out, and must have concluded it was not his day when he clumsily brought down Shane Long in the area to concede a penalty.

Dusan Tadic stepped up and slotted it into the top corner four minutes from time.

The only downside for Saints was the injury that forced off Virgil van Dijk.

How Saints need him to be leading the team this week with Jose Fonte having departed.

Whether that can happen or not remains to be seen, but Saints got exactly what they needed out of this game – a confidence boosting win, and some goals.

It sets the week up perfectly. What a week it might be.

Tadic: Puel needs to play his best team at Liverpool

Show/hide article…

DUSAN Tadic has pleaded with Claude Puel to deploy his strongest team in the League Cup semi-final second leg at Liverpool on Wednesday night.

With Saints’ confidence and momentum back on an upward trajectory after their first Premier League win this year against Leicester City, Tadic believes that Puel cannot afford to rotate against Liverpool.

The Saints manager has not named an unchanged starting 11 on any occasion this campaign, making nearly 200 changes in the process.

But with Saints heading to Merseyside with a precious 1-0 aggregate lead, Tadic reckons that it’s logical to keep with the best side possible, especially following a much-needed bounce after beating Leicester 3-0 at St Mary’s yesterday.

“I think yes,” he said, when asked if Puel needs his best side out at Anfield. “For myself I think yes because sometimes players are tired, but most of the time we are ready to play every three days and we play from the beginning of the season.

“For us, this is not a problem [to play], but the coach decides.

“My opinion is that you need to have always the best team out on the pitch in that moment.”

Puel has maintained that, with the games coming thick and fast, the players can’t play in such regular intervals.

Subsequently, the Frenchman tinkerers incessantly, despite most of the players maintaining that they don’t need to be resting, even with Saints in the midst of their busiest-ever Premier League era season.

“For me personally, I don’t need a rest,” the playmaker said. “Physically I feel very well.

“After the injury on my nose I needed a little bit of time, but now I feel very well and I can play every three days.

“I think most of the players feel like that.

“You are really motivated and you want to show yourself [that you can play every three days].”

The 27-year-old Serbian international admits that recently departed captain Jose Fonte leaves a big void in the Saints camp, after moving to West Ham in an ÂŁ8m deal.

Tadic said: “We will miss him [Fonte]. He is a very good professional – a very good guy. He was important on the pitch and important in the club.

“Football is like that. Everyday there’s something new and we will miss him a lot, but we wish him all the best and hope he will do well there.”

Fonte’s exit from St Mary’s has left a sour taste in the mouth, after the Portuguese international agitated for a move away.

But Tadic says it’s something that the team can’t dwell on.

“Football is like that. You never know what will happen. One day you’re here, one day somewhere else. It’s football and we need to accept that,” he said.

“We need to show a good mentality. We will miss him [Fonte] on the pitch and the dressing room and we need to feel that somebody take the place of him, but we will do that.

“We will not feel his absence, I hope.

“It will be strange, also for him and everyone.”

Tadic hailed the 3-0 win over the Foxes as a real confidence builder ahead of the crunch Liverpool game on Wednesday.

“It was very important,” he said. “We needed that win. We showed, especially in the first-half, that we can play very good football and we need to keep playing like that.

“We knew we had four defeats and we knew we had to show ourselves and it’s a very important three points.

“It’s very important but we need to be consistent. We have now a very tough game and we need to be ready to try and go to the final.

“It can build confidence but still we need to prepare mentally and show that we can be that team that will be in the final.”

The Serbian playmaker, who scored from the penalty spot late on against the Foxes, reckons that Saints need to relax as they head to Anfield with a precious 1-0 lead.

“We need to relax and to play like the first game here against them. To fight for each other and play a strong match,” he said.

Virgil van Dijk hobbled out of the Leicester win, but Tadic is hoping he’ll be fine for the Liverpool showdown.

“We need to prepare as best as possible,” he said. “I hope he (Van Dijk) will be fine. If he is not we need to find somebody who can replace him. We know it will be tough, but it’s like that in football.”
