Van Dijk fitness worry for Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk is touch and go to be fit for Saints’ EFL Cup semi-final second leg at Liverpool on Wednesday night.

The big central defender limped off early in the second half of the 3-0 win over Leicester after failing to recover from a challenge by Jamie Vardy which damaged his left ankle.

Saints boss Claude Puel will be nervously waiting to learn the full extent of the injury ahead of the massive game at Anfield.

He said: “He could not continue the game.

“We will see for the next games. I don’t know if we can recover him.

“He took a big kick and we will see if we can recover him for this game.

“I hope we can have Virgil of course because he is our captain and he’s an important player.

“Of course, it will be better to recover Vigil for this game.”

Saints are not flush for options at centre back at the moment following the sale of Jose Fonte to West Ham.

Fonte’s departure has seen van Dijk named as the new team captain, with Steven Davis as club captain.

But it will be van Dijk’s availability for Wednesday night that will be of greatest concern, with Maya Yoshida likely to partner Jack Stephens if the Dutchman doesn’t make it.

Though the injury does not seem particularly serious, it does add pressure on Saints to act in the transfer market, though Puel is not getting carried away about that.

“We will see until the end of the market, and we will take things about an opportunity or not to take another centre back,” he reflected.

“I am also happy with the possibilities in defence and we see if Gardos can come back with a good level.

“We will see this with calm and whether there is a possibility or not to take another player in place of Jose.”

Following the morale boosting win over Leicester, it is now all eyes on Anfield.

“We like many points in the Premier League but it’s an important game not because the Premier League was not sufficient the last games but it’s an opportunity to see a final and second leg all is possible,” admitted Puel.

“Of course Liverpool is favourite for this game and it’s just one goal for us which is not much but we will see this and in football all is possible.

“It was a good first leg against Liverpool with quality and a goal or two goals more was possible and it will be interesting for the second leg.

“It is important at the moment not just to see the possibility to play a final but with a good focus for our game.”

Southampton 3-0 Leicester: Puel praise for ‘intelligent’ Ward-Prowse

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel praised the intelligence of James Ward-Prowse as the midfielder led Saints to a comprehensive 3-0 win over Leicester at St Mary’s.

Ward-Prowse scored the opener and had a hand in the second with a fine set-piece delivery as Saints ended their fourth match top flight losing streak.

Puel was delighted with the performance of the 22-year-old academy graduate.

He said: “I think since the beginning of the season he can make good progress, strong with a good presence, good physical recovery and quality on the pitch also.

“He takes confidence and it is important also because it gives situations with a good right foot on the free kicks. This gives us opportunities to score like the second goal with Jay for example.

“This is important for all the team and he improve and I trust him because we can have different possibilities with Davis, with Clasie, with Hojbjerg, Romeu and Reed. We have many players for three places but it is interesting to see James at this level and scoring. This is very important.”

He added: “I think since the beginning of the season first game was difficult for him at home against Watford but after he played with good spirit, quality, strong character, good personality and intelligent because he can analyse a situation after every game and he knows whether an interesting game or not. It is important for young players to improve by analysing after the game.”

The Leicester win was a convincing victory for Saints and Puel admitted: “I am happy of course to stop the losses in the Premier League and to win this game.

“I think it was a game between two teams in difficulties and it was important to play this game with good confidence, good calm and good spirit and good play.

“It was a fantastic first half with beautiful goals and good management in the second half we can finish off the game before.

“It was important to have a lot of opportunities to score and to stay with a clean sheet and to take good confidence to prepare the next game.”

Puel was particularly pleased that Saints scored three times after their recent troubles in front of goal.

“It is good to score because we can have every game a lot of situation and opportunities and chances and we can score. This was difficult to accept,” he confessed.

“I was happy when I see Ward-Prowse scoring because it is important the midfield can score and try and keep good spontaneity after good action.

“Defenders and midfielders can score and not just the striker.

“We finish our game against Burnley with 15 chances and just two for the opponent and they won the game.

“It is difficult for us to accept and this is for many games and it was important to have the good clinical and it’s a good confidence for all the players in the squad against Liverpool.”

Puel: We deserved this win

Show/hide article…

A fine first-half display helped Saints into a two-goal lead, as James Ward-Prowse and Jay Rodriguez both found the net, before Dušan Tadić added a third from the penalty spot.

The result ends Saints’ run of four without a win in the Premier League, and Puel was delighted with the performance of his side in the victory.

“It’s a good win for all of my players, to get what they deserved for their performance,” Puel told southamptonfc.com after the game.

“It was the same in the last games; we had the quality on the pitch with many opportunities like today.

“We had quality but without what we deserved and a clinical edge to our play.

“Against Leicester we stayed until the end with a clean sheet, with three goals and this is good for my players and the spirit of the team.”

Saints may well have been out of sight before Tadić added the penalty, but was also pleased to see goals coming from midfield, as Ward-Prowse netted the opener.

“I think we can finish the game off before, but it’s a good situation to prepare for the game against Liverpool,” Puel added.

“I saw interesting things, like Ward-Prowse’s goal. For me it’s important to see midfielders and defenders scoring in our squad.

“I like this goal because it’s a midfielder who scored, and it was a beautiful action.”

Southampton’s win against Leicester ideal preparation for EFL Cup semi-final, says Claude Puel

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s 3-0 win over champions Leicester City on Sunday was the perfect result ahead of their EFL Cup semi-final second leg tie with Liverpool, according to manager Claude Puel.

The Saints ended a run of four straight Premier League defeats thanks to goals from James Ward-Prowse, Jay Rodriguez, Dusan Tadic at St Mary’s.

It was just the second time this season that Southampton have scored three times in a league match and it sets Puel’s side up nicely for their trip to Merseyside on Wednesday night as they look to defend a slender 1-0 lead and reach Wembley.

“It was a strong game for us, with quality on the pitch, good football, many chances and opportunities in the second half,” Puel said.

"We could have finished off the game before, but it was a good result. Two teams in difficulty, and it was important for us to win this game, with good play, and it was a perfect result and now we can recover and prepare for a big game on Wednesday.

"It is an important game, but also for Liverpool who lost in the Premier League, and it is important to stay focussed on our quality and play.

"We know it is a difficult game, the first leg was important and a good game for us, without being clinical because we could have won by two or three goals, but now are just one goal up for the second leg and we know Liverpool away will be difficult.

“But we will play our football and we will see.”

One worry for Puel, though, was the ankle injury that forced captain Virgil van Dijk to be substituted just before the hour-mark on the South Coast, making him a doubt for the visit to Anfield.

“I do not know at the moment, we will see tomorrow in training, it is a strong pain from a kick, but I do not know if we will have him for Wednesday or not, but of course I hope (we do),” said Puel.

However, one player who looks certain to face the Reds is Ward-Prowse, who opened the scoring against the Foxes with a well-taken strike that Puel revealed they had been working on in training.

“We repeated this move on the training ground and it is important to take confidence,” he said.

“I am happy when a midfielder scores, like Ward-Prowse, and it is important to take responsibility to shoot and cross, because the quality is here, but it is important now to find the clinical finish. Today it was OK, but we need to do better.”

Puel confirms Saints’ new captains

Show/hide article…

Steven Davis will take on the role of Club Captain, while defender Virgil van Dijk has been named Team Captain, meaning he will lead the side out on matchdays when named in the starting line-up.

And Puel says both Davis and van Dijk deserve the roles.

“Virgil will be the captain of the team, with Davis also as a captain of the club,” Puel told southamptonfc.com after the win against Leicester City.

“It’s two very important people and players in the squad, who have earned a lot of respect from their teammates.

“Davis and Virgil will give a good attitude and a good spirit to the rest of the team, and that’s important.”

Puel also confirmed after the game that van Dijk would be assessed having come off injured against Leicester. The defender will hope to be available for the trip to Liverpool on Wednesday.

Rodriguez thrilled for Ward-Prowse

Show/hide article…

Ward-Prowse set Saints on their way to a 3-0 victory against the Foxes, as he produced a sublime strike for his second goal of the season.

Rodriguez extended the lead not long after, before Dušan Tadić wrapped things up with a late penalty.

"I was 100 per cent pleased for Prowsey,” said Rodriguez. “He’s a good friend. I watch him in training and he probably works the hardest.

“I think he can score all different types of goals and I think now he’ll kick on and score more.

"Everyone has faith in him, and he has belief in himself in what he can do, and the talent he’s got, and I’m sure he’s going to kick on.

“There’s no pressure on him. He’s a great lad, and he works 100 per cent every training session.”

England manager Gareth Southgate was among the crowd at St Mary’s to see both men score, but Rodriguez said a return to the international scene is not on his mind.

"I just concentrate on when I play, that’s all,” he said. “As long as I can play, I’ll let everything else look after itself.

“I’ve still got to improve massively on a lot of things and I’ll continue to do that and work hard.”

Southampton appoint Steven Davis and Virgil van Dijk as new captains

Show/hide article…

Steven Davis has been appointed as Southampton’s new club captain, with Virgil van Dijk team captain.

Jose Fonte fulfilled both duties but he left St Mary’s earlier this week, joining West Ham United in an £8m deal.

Northern Ireland international midfielder Davis joined the club from Rangers in 2012 and has made 148 appearances in all competitions.

He has been in and out of the first team under Claude Puel this season, while Van Dijk has been a regular under the Frenchman’s stewardship.

Van Dijk, who will lead the side out on matchdays when named in the starting XI, joined Saints from Celtic in September 2015, and has established himself as one of the leading centre-backs in the Premier League.

Ranieri tells Leicester fans to blame him after Foxes are thumped by Southampton

Show/hide article…

Claudio Ranieri took the blame after Leicester suffered another away-day horror show at Southampton.

Fallen champions Leicester were hammered 3-0 at Southampton as their miserable record on the road continued.

They have now failed to win any of their 11 away league games this season and Ranieri is ready to go back to basics.

He said: “Against Chelsea I played three at the back and against Southampton a diamond in midfield and these changes led to a misunderstanding.

“My players are used to 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1. I make mistakes [by changing it]. It is my fault in these last two matches.

“They [the players] make mistakes, but also it is myself who has to explain things better.

“I changed because I wanted to help them and what I watched [previously] wasn’t so good but my idea to help them was wrong.

“It is better to continue with what they recognise and it can be better.”

And Ranieri admitted relegation is a real concern, just a season after winning the league, with Leicester just five points clear of danger in 15th.

He said: “Yes [relegation] is realistic of course for this reason I want 40 points. It is important to achieve that as soon as possible.

Goals from James Ward-Prowse, Jay Rodriguez and Dusan Tadic earned Southampton a first win in five league games.

But the gloss was taken off their victory by an ankle injury for star man Virgil Van Dijk who is now a doubt for Wednesday’s EFL Cup semi-final second-leg at Liverpool.

Claude Puel said: “He took a big kick [from Vardy] and we will see if we can recover him for this game.

“I hope we can have Virgil of course because he is our captain and he’s an important player.

“It will be better to recover Vigil for this game but I don’t know if we can.”

Ward-Prowse: We won the battle

Show/hide article…

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse says Saints were rewarded for their efforts early in the match against Leicester as they beat the Foxes 3-0.

Ward-Prowse opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a well-struck effort into the left corner of the net, with Jay Rodriguez and Dušan Tadić adding goals in a comfortable win for the hosts at St Mary’s.

A lack of goals had been cited in Saints’ recent performances, and Ward-Prowse felt the team showed their capabilities in front of goal against Leicester.

“Every team goes through a tough period and we’ve certainly been through that and I think the way we performed on Wednesday and the way we dug in deep to score a goal at the end started off what we hope will be a good week for us.

“Today was going to be a tough game, but we matched them and we won the battle very early on which put us in good stead.

“The manager has spoken to us about being clinical and more aggressive in front of goal and we’re all aware that we need to score more goals, but it’s not only the strikers’ responsibility, it’s everyone roles to chip in with the goals and that was the case today.”

Saints held a 2-0 lead in the same fixture last season before being pegged back to 2-2, and Ward-Prowse said he was relieved to see the team go on and win the game this time.

“We learnt from last year,” he said. “I think it was the same scoreline at half time then and it wasn’t a great outcome, but I think it showed our maturity and the discipline we have throughout the team to ride that tough spell and make sure we came out on top.

Ward-Prowse was pleased with his own strike, and hopes the team will take their performance into Wednesday’s EFL Cup semi-final at Liverpool.

“It was nice to get on the scoresheet,” he said. “It’s a great feeling to do that and something I’ve been working on and it’s paid off today.

“I could have maybe had one or two more today and Pierre [Højbjerg] as well, but I think that sort of responsibility is growing and the manager is encouraging us to shoot more and take more chances which you could see paid off for us.

“You could see the freedom and the confidence which has grown within the team and I think we’ve come out of that bad spell now. It’s great timing going to Anfield which will be a tough place to go, but we can take a lot of confidence from today.”
