The Atlas Lions are due to host the Dutch in a friendly encounter, in Agadir, on Wednesday 31st May.

That is the warm-up for their opening match of qualification for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Morocco visit Cameroon on Thursday 8th June for that match, as the look to make a fast start in their group, which also includes Malawi and Comoros.

Cameroon will automatically qualify regardless of where they finish in the standings, as they are hosting the finals, with one other team also joining them from the group.

Cesar Azpilicueta and Ben Gibson lead ever-present club

Show/hide article…

Whether you are fighting for the Premier League title, battling relegation or simply watching from the stands, a 38-game season can be a real test of both mental and physical stamina.

But for this group of five players the grueling campaign has been an especially long one.

Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta became just the fourth to play every minute of a Premier League title-winning season by playing in all 38 matches, following in the footsteps of John Terry, Gary Pallister and Wes Morgan.

But this season’s quintet of ever-presents includes Fraser Forster (Southampton), Ben Foster (West Brom) Steve Cook (Bournemouth) and Ben Gibson (Middlesbrough), who all played 3,420 minutes this season.

Goalkeepers Forster and Foster both played out seasons which saw their clubs finish safely inside the top half, as did Bournemouth defender Cook, but Gibson endured a more difficult season at club level.

Though he did win his first England call-up, Gibson and Boro were embroiled in a relegation battle which ultimately ended in disappointment.

He may have to wait for his 39th Premier League appearance, though, with Boro chairman Steve Gibson, his uncle, vowing to keep hold of the in-demand defender for their Championship promotion push.

One man who will be disappointed not to make the list of ever-presents is Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski. The Pole played his side’s first 37 league games of the season, but Kristoffer Nordfeldt was given a chance on the final day.

Burnley’s Michael Keane was also on course to hit the mark, but his bid was ultimately derailed due to injury.

Speaking to the Chelsea website, Azpilicueta summed up the struggles in playing every minute of a league season and insists a large part of the achievement is down to the coaching stuff.

‘Obviously it’s not easy to play every minute and win the league,’ he said.

'It’s a big achievement. I’ve tried to do my best to get in the team but I have to be thankful to the manager, he’s trusted me a lot.

‘I was always in the team and the only way I could repay his confidence was by working hard which is what I’ve tried to do since pre-season. In the end we got a big reward but we want a bigger one on Saturday.’

Saints supporters give Puel the vote of no confidence

Show/hide article…

SAINTS fans have spoken in an online poll of Daily Echo readers.

The majority want Claude Puel out of Southampton Football Club.

The result of an online poll run by the Daily Echo revealed that 68 per cent of supporters who voted would like to see the under pressure boss head for the St Mary’s exit door, while 32 per cent say he should stay.

Puel led Saints to an eighth place Premier League finish and the EFL Cup final at Wembley, but, despite that, the crowd has been displeased with the manager’s leadership of the team.

A drab style of play, chronic lack of goals, poor recent results and a non-existent relationship with the support base have all contributed to the boss’s popularity sinking lower and lower.

Now, as Saints conduct an inquest into the season just gone, the St Mary’s faithful have let their voices heard.

The boos and chants of ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’ in Saints’ last day defeat to Stoke was enough to suggest that the supporters had turned on their manager.

But, now, the Daily Echo can reveal that of 8,000 fans surveyed, around 5,440 of them are eager to see the back of Puel.

Around 2,560 want the 55-year-old to stay on and give it another crack next season, but they are significantly outnumbered by those who want change.

Currently, Saints are going through the process of deciding their manager’s future and part of that will likely take in to account the supporters’ feelings on the issue.

An internal end of season review is taking place, with vice-chairman of football Les Reed and director of recruitment and scouting Ross Wilson taking the lead during the process.

Puel will be present himself at the meetings with the end result of the Frenchman either keeping his job or heading for the exit door.

There are several sore subjects that have caused unrest among fans, especially in the closing weeks of the season.

Saints won just one of their final eight matches and did not score in any of their last five games at St Mary’s, which only added fuel to the flames over the lack of goals throughout the campaign.

In all, Puel’s men managed just 17 strikes in 19 home fixtures in the league.

That, combined with Saints’ often unattractive style of play, led to some very boring performances at St Mary’s.

That displeasure is also partly a result of events earlier in the season, with Saints exiting the Europa League in disappointing fashion and an embarrassing FA Cup elimination, which saw Saints defeated 5-0 by Arsenal at home in the fourth round.

The constant rotation and lack of entertainment has fed into these ill feelings too.

But there can be no arguing that the Frenchman has delivered a very respectable eighth place finish in the Premier League and a Wembley final in the EFL Cup.

All of that came amid a backdrop of an arduous 53-game campaign and long-term injuries to talisman Virgil van Dijk and top-scorer Charlie Austin.

These topics are likely to be at the forefront of the debrief that is currently under way in the bowels of St Mary’s.

Austin: I want 20 next season

Show/hide article…

The Saints striker returned to the starting line-up in Sunday’s home game against Stoke City, ending a five-and-a-half-month spell out of Claude Puel’s XI with a shoulder injury.

Having scored nine times before being sidelined in early December, a fit-again Austin is hoping he can net a significant number of goals next term.

“I was on a roll with nine goals by the start of December and I really thought I was going to get to 20,” he said.

“I was playing some really good football. But next year I’m going to give it another good go and try to get to 20 as quickly as I can – that will be the aim.”

Austin also reflected on a fourth consecutive top-eight finish for Saints, and believes there is plenty to be proud of from the season just finished.

“The club needs to appreciate how well the lads have done throughout the season,” he said.

"Stoke was our 53rd game of the season, we finished eighth in the Premier League, we played in the Europa League and we had a cup run and got to a final. We’ve got to be happy with that.

“You look at the top six and they’ve been solid this year and rightly so they’ve gone away with it. But we’ll regroup over the summer, come back pre-season and have a right good go in one, if not two, of the cups and have a good go for Europe next year.”
