Alexis Sanchez and Peter Crouch feature in Premier League Funnies of the Season

Alexis Sanchez and Peter Crouch both feature in our compilation of the funniest moments from the Premier League this season.

From goalkeeper gaffes to referees falling over, we’ve got all bases covered in our rib-tickling video.

One stand-out moment saw Crouch offer up his Stoke shirt to a speedo-wearing Stoke fan after the pair struck a deal on social media.

Ahead of their final game of the season against Southampton, Stoke supporter Tyrone Sidley offered up a ‘Potters’ proposal to attend the game at St Mary’s wearing nothing but his revealing swimwear - if Crouch handed over his shirt after the final whistle.

Crouch did not forget his pre-match promise at the end of the game, heading over to the travelling support and picking out his rather exposed fan.

Meanwhile, Sanchez’s embarrassing moment against Leicester also features - when the Arsenal forward theatrically fell to the floor after being hit on the shoulder when Christian Fuchs directed a throw-in towards him.

The incident led to a memorable exchange on Twitter - with Roberth Huth unable to resist a dig after Sanchez posted a photo of his ‘swollen lip’ on social media.

There are plenty more funnies to sink your teeth into with the video, so what are you waiting for!

VOTE: Who should make England squad for European Under-21 Championship in Poland?

With the U21 European Championship looming, who should England’s Aidy Boothroyd take to Poland?

Having officially taken charge of the U21s in February, Boothroyd will now be finalising his squad ahead of the Euro Finals, live on Sky Sports this June.

The young Lions are set to face Sweden (Jun 16), Slovakia (Jun 19) and hosts Poland (Jun 22) in the tournament, with the hope of reaching the final on June 30.

Boothroyd has spoken of his desire for fully-fledged England internationals to drop down to the U21s to gain tournament experience, but a move for players such as Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Raheem Sterling seems unlikely.

However, with any player born on or after January 1, 1994, eligible to feature, we could yet see a surprise name in the squad this summer.

Should Marcus Rashford gain further international experience? Would John Stones benefit from a summer in Poland? And can any of Manchester United’s emerging talent make the cut?

Vote below to have your own say.

Swipe right if you think they should make the squad, swipe left if not!

Liverpool transfer gossip: Reds eye £50m-rated defender as part of £100m spree

Show/hide article…

Liverpool squeezed into the Champions League after holding off a late rally from Arsenal on the final day of the season.

Jurgen Klopp should therefore be boosted this summer with Fenway Sports Group set to hand the German a £100m kitty, report the Telegraph.

Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk, rated at £50m, and former Chelsea star and Roma winger Mohamed Salah feature on the Reds’ shopping list.

Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, RB Leipzig’s Naby Keita and Borussia Dortmund maestro Christian Pulisic are also targets.

Liverpool are reportedly among the teams battling to secure the signature of Iker Casillas.

The Porto goalkeeper is out of contract this summer and appears to be considering his options with no deal agreed to keep him in Portugal.

Casillas, who played over 700 times for Real Madrid between 1999 and 2015, has allegedly been the subject of interest from around the continent.

Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation remains up in the air following unconvincing seasons from both Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius.

Jurgen Klopp has named a strong Liverpool squad that has flown out to Australia to play a post-season friendly against Sydney FC.

The Reds are full of confidence following their 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough on Sunday which saw them secure a top four finish and a place in the Champions League next season.

The majority of the first-team squad have travelled to the other side of the world including Reds legends Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Daniel Agger and Steve McManaman.

The match marks the club’s 125 year anniversary celebrations and over 80,000 fans are expected to watch the game.

Who is Henry Onyekuru? We profile the Nigerian striker wanted by Arsenal

Who is Henry Onyekuru? We profile the Nigerian striker wanted by Arsenal

Henry Onyekuru is the subject of interest from Arsenal, as well as a host of other Premier League clubs, but what do we know about the striker?

The 19-year-old looks set to move away from Belgium this summer, with Sky sources understanding that talks are progressing well between the Gunners and representatives for the KAS Eupen forward.

The Nigerian is certainly a player in demand, with SSN HQ reporting last week that Everton, Southampton and West Bromwich Albion were also keen.

Here, we take a closer look at the player with a release clause of just £6.8m in his contract…

International recognition: First call-up for Nigeria on May 22

Onyekuru ended the season strongly in Belgium, scoring 10 goals in 10 games during the play-off stage in the domestic league.

And having scored 12 times during the regular season, Onyekuru missed out on the ‘Golden Bull’ to RSC Anderlecht forward Lukasz Teodorczyk, who scored more away goals that the Eupen striker.

Onyekuru also scored twice in the Belgian Cup, finishing the season with 24 goals in 41 games.

It was undoubtedly a breakthrough campaign for the teenager, though he did show promise in 2015-16, netting six times en route to Eupen’s promotion to the top tier.

The Nigerian recently lost out on the Young Player of the Year award in Belgium, finishing third behind Landry Dimata of Oostende and Anderlecht’s Youri Tielemans.

Onyekuru moved from Nigeria to Senegal to join the Aspire Academy in 2010. The academy is the product of a Qatari-based initiative which aims to unearth a host of footballing talent across a number of developing countries.

Eupen play a major role in this project. They have been owned by the ASPIRE Zone Foundation since 2012, and are seen as a stepping stone for players - such as Onyekuru - who dream of plying their trade in Europe’s biggest leagues.

Onyekuru himself moved to Eupen in July 2015, and he is currently one of three Nigerians in the squad - which also features players from Qatar, South Africa and Venezuela, to name but a few.

Liverpool, Celtic and RB Leipzig were linked with Onyekuru earlier this season, but now Arsenal have emerged as favourites to land the forward.

Sources close to the player said they were confident the forward would play in the Premier League next season, having already turned down moves to Belgian giants Brugge and Anderlecht.

The interest coincides with a call-up to the Nigeria squad for upcoming friendlies against Corsica and Togo.

A debut for the Super Eagles would certainly cap off a fine campaign for Onyekuru, but we must wait to discover where he’ll be playing next season.

‘Pie Man’ Wayne Shaw determined to make a success of his new AFC Totton role

Show/hide article…

WAYNE Shaw will be calling on some of his old Saints buddies to help him make a success of his new role at AFC Totton.

The famous pie-eating ‘Roly-Poly Goalie’ has been appointed commercial manager of the Southern One South & West club.

“It’s something to get my teeth into,” smiled Shaw, who started out as an aspiring schoolboy centre-half at Southampton.

“We’re going to create a patrons’ lounge in the downstairs boardroom for 50 or 60 people and every other game I’ll ask people like Nicky Banger, Doddsy (Jason Dodd) and Glenn Cockerill to come along as guests.

“I’ve played for the Ex-Saints and have a lot of friends and contacts. Everyone’s willing to help when you’re just starting out.”

As a former Eastleigh goalkeeper, Shaw has seen what can be achieved when a club gets the local business community behind it.

The Spitfires, of course, have moved into a different stratosphere since wealthy owner Stewart Donald took control, but Shaw is convinced Totton have scope to grow at their impressive Testwood Stadium home.

“I’m not saying we can do an Eastleigh but, with no disrespect, the facility at Totton is probably better than what Eastleigh had to begin with. It’s just getting more people to use it," he said.

“My job at Totton is commission-based, they’ve got no money as such to pay me a salary, but I’m just trying to bring the community together and make AFC Totton a family affair again.”

A larger-than-life character, Shaw was a well-known face in the town long before he hit national and international headlines for his pie-eating antics during Sutton United’s fifth-round FA Cup tie against Arsenal in February.

His friendship with AFC Totton chairman Wayne Mew and vice-chairman Dave Penny goes back years.

Hailing the arrival of the big man at the Testwood Stadium, an AFC Totton statement said: "We believe having Wayne on board will help this wonderful football club take a huge step towards realising its undoubted potential.

“Wayne has the bubbly personality and he is a Totton lad.

“So if anybody can make a success of this role then it will be Wayne Shaw.

“We are proud to have him on board.”

Stephens: Maya has been fantastic for me

Show/hide article…

Since replacing the injured Virgil van Dijk in January, Stephens has played the majority of games at centre back with Yoshida.

And the 23-year-old is delighted that the pair have been able to build up such a tight bond.

“It takes time to form a partnership with anyone,” Stephens started.

“But I think me and Maya have started to perform very well together. Over the last two or three months it has got a lot more solid.

“To come into a team that was quite settled was difficult to start with, but Maya has been fantastic for me, as has Cédric. All of the boys have been brilliant and I am very grateful for that.”

Stephens has enjoyed a fine season on the south coast, which has seen him make his Premier League debut, play a key role in the run to the EFL Cup final and net a last-minute winner for England Under-21s at St Mary’s

Understandably, it’s hard for the centre back to pick one standout moment.

“It’s difficult to pick one,” he continued.

“I would probably say the Liverpool semi-final game, though. It was my first big game this season and there was a lot of pressure on all of us.

“Not just me, but the whole team as well. It was a great moment for everyone to pick up that result and get through to the final.”

Saints represented at PL Schools tournament

Show/hide article…

Forty schools from across England and Wales competed in the event, which was this year held at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium.

Each top-flight club had an Under-11s mixed team and an Under-13 girls side representing them in the tournament, following regional heats across the country.

Foundry Lane Primary, which is situated in Southampton, took part in the Under-11s mixed section, with the highlights of their day being a 5-2 victory over Leicester and a 2-1 win against Crystal Palace in the group stage.

Connor Underhill netted four goals in four games and narrowly missed out on being the tournament’s top scorer, while Year 4 pupil Sonny Killinger-Brown enjoyed a memorable day, getting himself on the scoresheet despite being up against many Year 6 youngsters.

The Westgate School, which is based in Winchester, represented Saints in the Under-13s girls category, as they recorded a 1-0 win over Leicester and a 2-0 success against Crystal Palace in the group stage.

Both sides just missed out on progressing from the group stage, but enjoyed a fantastic day, with Manchester City’s representatives winning the Under-11s trophy, while Liverpool’s took the Under-13s prize.

Paul Merson’s Premier League season grades: Chelsea excel, but who should be expelled?

Show/hide article…

Who was “outstanding”? And which top-six team should be “expelled”? Paul Merson grades the 2016/17 season of every Premier League side.

Chelsea were crowned champions ahead of Tottenham, with Manchester City and Liverpool also making the top four. Arsenal and Manchester United were fifth and sixth while Hull, Middlesbrough and Sunderland were relegated.

But who overachieved, who did as expected, and who underachieved? Sky Sports pundit Merson grades every team from A+ to F-…

They have been outstanding this season. To be more than 40 points better off than last season is a phenomenal feat. They were poor last year, but they have been brilliant under Antonio Conte to win the league.

The only thing you would you say is when they had to play games in quick succession they looked tired and were well beaten by Tottenham. They played once a week for most of the season but over Christmas they did look tired, so I think they need another wing-back, centre-back and forward for next season.

They didn’t win the league but they were superb. If they weren’t moving away from White Hart Lane I think they would be champions next season. I don’t see that happening at Wembley though.

The most important thing for me next season is when the fixtures come out in June. I think they need their first five home games to be against five of the lesser teams so they can build confidence and start winning games at Wembley.

If three of their first five home games are against top-six teams then it could be a dodgy start and they might not be a threat to win the league if that happens.

They were expected to win the league with Pep Guardiola and in the end they never looked like challenging. He was brought in to win the title and it didn’t happen. People might say ‘well they got top four’, but that’s the least that is expected at Man City. They should be competing at the top.

They started great but the turning point for me was when they changed the team at Celtic in the Champions League. They were flying with 10 wins on the spin and then changed the team and drew 3-3. After that, they went through a dodgy patch. I think Guardiola will have learnt from this season, but a lot more was expected.

They did their job, which was getting into the top four and qualifying for the Champions League. But they were only playing once a week and that is a massive advantage. It’s job done but it will be interesting to see how they fare next season.

Disappointing. First time in 20 years they haven’t got in the top four, they were a long way off the pace and Tottenham finished above them for the first time in ages.

It’s the way they lost games as well. Against Bayern Munich when they were 2-1 down with 10 men they had to draw the line and not keep going forward and getting beat by a silly score. That’s the problem with Arsenal. Then Tottenham dismantled them as well.

It all comes down to the Europa League final. If they win that’s a good season; two cups and in the Champions League. You can’t really complain about that. But if they don’t win I would have to expel them!

It would be an absolute shocker. They drew 15 games and in some of them they were unlucky and had chances to win the games, but in other games they have gone to set up for draws and have got draws.

There have been games they dominated and just couldn’t score, so they are not a million miles off, but I think they are short of players. And will David de Gea stay? He has saved them a lot of points over the last few seasons.

They finished top of the other league, or their own league as it turned out, as they were the only ones in it! I expected them to finish either seventh or eighth and I don’t see any of the teams below pushing them really.

They finished where they should end up, but I mark them down because of their poor cup runs. They went out of the FA Cup very early, which was disappointing, and also lost to Norwich in the EFL Cup.

You have to be careful marking the teams around here because from Southampton down to 17th there is a gap of six points! So one more defeat and Saints would have been bottom half.

But they are probably where they should be and they had the added bonus of getting to the cup final. So not a bad season.

A really good season. In a ground that holds around 12,000 to finish this high above some big teams is impressive.

I think Jermain Defoe could be a good signing for them. They play two up front and there’s no point in him going somewhere and not playing or playing up front on his own in a struggling team. At Bournemouth they have a go every match and I expect him to get bundles of goals and go to the World Cup next year.

They faded away at the end but it’s another good job by Tony Pulis. I think people take it for granted that it’s ‘Tony Pulis’ West Brom’ and they will be alright, but you look at the teams that are below then you see what an unbelievable job he is doing there.

They have got a decent team but had some hard games at the end of the season which didn’t help their finishing position.

I was disappointed with them. I thought in the next three or four years, with all the money they didn’t have to spend on the stadium, they might be able to invest in players and challenge for the top four. But their signings have been bordering on atrocious at the highest level. That needs to be sorted out in a big way and it’s important they recruit well. But I expected them to be a lot better than they were.

I hope Slaven Bilic stays, but if he isn’t going to then I would tell them to let him go now because teams like Crystal Palace would definitely take him, all day long. He is a good manager.

This is a hard one. They did so well in the Champions League but were terrible in the Premier League. They started poorly and didn’t really turn up - it wasn’t good enough. They got the manager sacked and then started turning it on later in the season, but they did reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

I expected them to be top half, around ninth or 10th, and they faded away towards the end of the season before winning at Southampton on the last day. I think they are a decent team who should have done better.

When I first saw the news about Sam Allardyce I thought he was going to China, but obviously not! They should not be in this position - fighting to stay up with two games to go with Christian Benteke, Wilfried Zaha, Andros Townsend and Yohan Cabaye; how can they be this low?

They should be in the top half along with Stoke and West Ham. It was really disappointing from Palace. They should be much better than 14th.

They stayed up, which was the name of the game for them. They stay up, add a few players and in four or five years try to challenge higher up or have a great cup run.

They finished really well and Paul Clement was a great appointment. He has worked with some of the best players in the world and when he is talking to you on the training pitch you can’t help but listen and learn. I can only see them getting better and better.

They did well in the transfer market in January as they brought in some good players, which probably wouldn’t have been possible if they weren’t in the position they were in and not battling relegation. They put themselves in a position where they looked like they weren’t going to get relegated and then bought well.

Can they keep Sean Dyche? No disrespect but Palace is a bigger job than Burnley and I would be shocked if Palace were not looking at him.

They have to sort out their away record next season. We saw with Fulham a few years back that if you suddenly don’t win the games at home then you will get relegated.

They have done better than this in the last few years but they are not the biggest club in the world and they have stayed up, which was a feat. They were inconsistent, beating Arsenal and then getting ripped to shreds on the final day against Manchester City, but ultimately they were above the bottom three.

When Marco Silva came in he did well at certain times but the last few results were really poor. You can’t get away from the fact they have gone down. It’s a big club and they will be disappointed they went down.

I know I didn’t agree with Marco Silva at first but he did great when he came in and changed some things. He might have got some luck along the way - at times they were 1-0 down and he changed it and it worked - and looking back now you ask if it was luck, because the last few games they lost to Sunderland then got ripped apart by Palace.

But he wasn’t scared of changing it, which I liked, and he didn’t mess about. I would be shocked if there weren’t a few clubs who were looking at him.

Disappointing. They only scored 27 goals, if you are going to go out then do it in a blaze of glory. I have said it before and I’ll say it again; watching Middlesbrough this season was like getting invited to the best party in the world and sitting at the bar drinking water. It has been an absolute anti-climax.

Burnley did similar the year before when they got relegated but they came back up and Sean Dyche looked at it and thought they need to have more of a go, so played 4-4-2. You win some and lose some, but the draws are no good. Hopefully, Nigel Pearson will get the job and sort them out.

They were poor and never really gave themselves any chance of getting out of it. They started slowly and finished slowly. It was a miracle last year they stayed up but it was just a matter of time.

They didn’t bring in enough players. I understand why David Moyes brought in his former Everton players because he wanted players who could hit the ground running and knew what he was about. I do get that, but they were disappointing. They are a better team than what they showed.

Gross: Players’ work continues in summer

Show/hide article…

The 2016/17 season might have come to an end, and the players may have departed the club’s Staplewood Campus training base, but it is by no means all rest and relaxation for them.

Each member of the Saints squad is given a summer programme to follow in order to keep their physical levels up before they return for pre-season.

Gross and his team design each of them, and he provided an insight into the thinking behind them, as well as their importance.

“The summer programmes vary a little bit, depending on where they players are at in terms of the season,” he said.

"Some of the boys are still playing. Some have got a little break and then they go into internationals, some go into internationals straight away, so it varies a bit.

"But the typical structure is there’s a little bit of time for rest and recovery, although not too much, and then there’s a block periodisation of coming back into training, where they’ll do some slow and steady aerobic training and then, as they gradually get closer to pre-season, starting some more intense work with more high-speed running.

"It’s really important that their levels don’t drop off too much, because, if they come back into pre-season not having trained, the difference in intensity and workload is too much and the risk of getting injury is higher.

“In addition to that, they’ve got some strength programmes and the medical team have put together some injury-prevention sessions for each of the players as well, so they’ve got a pretty comprehensive workload to get on with while they’re not here.”

Gross explained that the programmes must also be tailored to ensure they are scientifically valuable, but also simple to carry out.

“Some individuals have got very specific ones, based maybe on injury history over the season, but it’s not too specific in that we need the players to be able to do it wherever they are in the world,” he said.

“Some of them will be on holiday in Dubai or Spain or wherever, so it’s important we get a good mix of under-pinning science in terms of the numbers, but also need to understand they’re not going to be at the training ground, so they don’t have the same facilities, so they need to be able to perform wherever they are.”

Gross added: "It’s an all-year-round programme. As I said before, if they come in and are too de-conditioned they can’t actually perform the work we need them to get done, both in terms of on-pitch technical and tactical work and also the physical load that we’ll give them pretty early on.

“We play games quite early in pre-season, so we need to make sure that they’re prepared to play, in order to allow them to perform, but also to ensure they don’t get injured.”
