Southampton and FC Porto competing to land Hull’s Marco Silva

Show/hide article…

Southampton and FC Porto are competing for the signature of Hull City manager Marco Silva.

Although Southampton and Porto still have managers of their own, they are in talks with Silva’s representatives about the young Portuguese coach taking over for the 2017-18 seasons and beyond.

Southampton are expected to dismiss Claude Puel this week after an underwhelming season, even though they finished eighth in the Premier League and reached the EFL Cup final.

Porto have not decided whether they will sack Nuno Espirito Santo after finishing second in the Portuguese league. But they are pursuing the possibility of appointing Silva, a man they were first interested in after he was dismissed by Sporting CP in June 2015.

Silva is one of the most in-demand managers this summer after nearly saving Hull City from relegation, only for them to get overtaken by Swansea City in the final weeks of the Premier League season. Although he signed an 18-month deal at Hull in January, he is now effectively a free agent because of the break clause in his contract which becomes activated in the event of relegation.

Silva said on Sunday night, after Hull were beaten 7-1 by Tottenham Hotspur, that he would discuss his future with the club this week. There is no prospect of him staying at Hull in the Championship next season.

Southampton remains Silva’s preferred option and if they make him a firm offer he would certainly accept it. Southampton are committed to spending money this summer to get back into the Europa League, a tournament in which they believe Puel underperformed this season. However, if does not get that job he is interested in the chance to coach Porto, who will be in the Champions League group phase next season and have one of the biggest transfer budgets in Portugal.

Silva is understood to be less interested in the Watford job. The Pozzo family are currently looking for a replacement for Walter Mazzarri, who has been sacked, and want a manager who plays attacking football, speaks English and has proved himself in a top European league. Although they are interested in Silva a deal is unlikely, at least while Southampton and Porto are still possibilities. Leonid Slutsky is interested in the job, too, but Watford are still evaluating other options.

Marco Silva not on Southampton shortlist if they sack Claude Puel

Show/hide article…

Southampton do not expect a final decision on Claude Puel’s future until later this week but Marco Silva does not feature on their current list of possible successors.

Silva is expected to part company with Hull City after a relegation that has still elevated his reputation and, while interested in the potential opportunity with Southampton, it is understood that he is not now on any shortlist.

A final decision on Puel has also not been made and, while an eighth place finish and League Cup final represents a solid first season in English football, Southampton will also take into account how they went out at the group stage of the Europa League and accumulated 17 fewer league points than last season. A total of just 17 home league goals has also been a source of deep frustration to fans. As well as Southampton, Silva has been linked with Watford and another potential vacancy at FC Porto.

Southampton are conducting their review of the season this week, which will be led by executive director Les Reed and also include Puel, as well Ross Wilson, the director of scouting and recruitment who himself turned down the chance this year to join Glasgow Rangers.

Saints takeover decision expected

Show/hide article…

Premier League bosses could deliver a make-or-break verdict on Saints’ potential £200m Chinese takeover in the next week.

A top flight panel is due to rule whether Lander Holdings boss Gao Jisheng has passed the fit and proper persons test.

If Gao gets the thumbs up then he will be able to push ahead with his plans to buy an 80 per cent stake in Saints from Katharina Liebherr.

If the verdict goes against him then there is the prospect of a messy battle involving teams of lawyers and the possibility the deal will be shelved, with Saints then looking elsewhere to secure investment in the club.

Gao and Liebherr pleaded their case to a Premier League panel after concerns were raised about accusations made against the Chinese entrepreneur dating back a number of years.

It is understood that Gao disputes the version of events that has been portrayed in sections of the media and was confident enough to argue his case in person rather than purely through lawyers.

There is thought to be a degree of optimism that Gao’s potential ownership at St Mary’s will be allowed to progress, but with the Premier League increasingly scrutinising possible new owners of top flight clubs it is far from certain.

There is a chance the rules could even be changed when the Premier League holds it’s AGM on June 8.

Whether that happens or not remains to be seen, but Saints hope they will learn the verdict on Gao before that.

Should he get the nod to move ahead, the only barrier remaining in place will be the rather significant matter of paying around £210m for a majority stake.

Liebherr will continue to own the other 20 per cent and take an active role in running the club.

Liebherr, who inherited the club from her late father Markus, is understood to have been keen for the deal to progress, having struck up a friendship with Gao’s daughter, Nelly, and the two having developed a vision for a bright future for Saints.

Despite that, the two barriers that remain to be cleared are the most significant, and so, as chairman Ralph Krueger explained last week, there is no certainty of a deal being concluded.

Krueger also emphasised that should Lander not end up taking control of Saints then the club will continue business as usual while actively seeking investment from elsewhere.

Liebherr wants the club to push forward, and doesn’t feel that can happen under her ownership given the vast sums of money required for Saints to make the next step up.

What does seem clear is that the Saints hierarchy want a conclusion to the Lander deal one way or the other quickly now after months of talks.
