Ultimate League reveals Liverpool are England’s top team, followed by Man Utd and Arsenal

Ultimate League reveals Liverpool are England’s top team, followed by Man Utd and Arsenal

Liverpool remain the top team in England but Arsenal have overtaken Manchester United into second, according to the Sky Sports Ultimate League, which calculates clubs’ average position over the past 50 years.

Liverpool topped the 89-team table - which incorporates the 2016/17 season - with an average league position of 3.44, buoyed by their phenomenal success during the 1970s and 80s.

Ahead of this season, Manchester United and Arsenal were drawn in second place, but, after Arsenal finished one place above United in fifth this season, the Gunners have overtaken the Red Devils.

Tottenham rank fourth, followed by Everton, Premier League champions Chelsea and Manchester City in seventh - with Spurs and City punching above their historic rank.

Despite being relegated from the Premier League last season, Aston Villa and Newcastle both made the Ultimate League top 10 in eighth and ninth, respectively.

Only teams that have played in the Football League for at least 15 seasons during the 50-year period are included and any non-league ventures are also factored. That means the Ultimate League provides a barometer for under or overachievement, based on historical league success over the past 50 years.

Bournemouth survived their second successive season in the top flight and remain England’s top overachievers - punching 44 places above their Ultimate League rank.

Swansea have now featured in the top flight for six successive seasons, and will appear for a seventh after a narrow relegation escape, but their 15th-place Premier League finish this term was still 35 places above their historical rank.

Brentford (+29), Rochdale (+29), Scunthorpe (+28) and Hull (+23) are also enjoying good times - as are Championship play-off finalists Reading (+20) and Huddersfield (+20).

Coventry City and Stockport County are the most underachieving teams in England, according to the Ultimate League.

The Sky Blues were relegated from League One this term after finishing 45 places below their average rank.

Stockport County are also 45 places below their rightful place, finishing eighth in the National League North this season - the sixth tier of English football.

Notts County (-35), Portsmouth (-34), Luton Town (-34), Tranmere Rovers (-34) and Wrexham (-32) are also well below their past achievements, although Pompey will have the opportunity to cut the deficit after winning promotion to League One.

Clubs to have appeared in England’s top four tiers for 15 seasons or more since 1967/68 but not included in the average league due to diminished status or dissolution include FC Wimbledon, Chester City, Darlington, Hereford United, Newport County, Aldershot, Scarborough and Halifax Town.

Stephens: This is just the start for me

Show/hide article…

The 23-year-old was forced to step in following the injury to Virgil van Djk, and went on to make 23 appearances throughout the campaign.

“For me personally it’s been a fantastic season,” started Stephens.

“Obviously to break through into the first team and play as many games as I have since Christmas has been brilliant.

“I’ve loved every minute of it and hopefully this is just the start for me now and I can build on it going into next season.”

This season has seen Stephens build a fine partnership with Maya Yoshida in the heart of defence, and the pair were crucial in helping Saints to the EFL Cup final.

And Stephens believes that, despite the result at Wembley, the experience has helped him grow in confidence.

“I definitely feel a lot more comfortable, both in the team and in the position,” continued Stephens.

“I think if you’ve watched me over the past few months then you will have seen that I have become more confident.

“I was always confident in my ability but I also knew it would be difficult to get into the team, so it has been a really good season to be able to do that.”

Fraser Forster reflects on Southampton’s

Show/hide article…

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster believes the club faces an important summer ahead, as he reflects on a “season of almosts”.

Saints finished their Premier League campaign inside the top half of the table for the fourth year running, ending what has been a season of ups and downs with an eighth-place finish, two spots lower and 17 points fewer than last year.

After exiting their first Europa League campaign at the group stage and narrowly missing out against Manchester United in the EFL Cup final, Forster admits the club could have achieved more and should now focus on strengthening a talented squad.

“We’ve had a bit of a tough season. It’s been a season of almosts,” he told Sky Sports.

"We should have done a bit better in the Europa League. We should have probably got out of the group, but it was a fantastic experience for the club.

“When you look at how other teams have done when they’ve played Europa League and Premier League as well, they’ve tended to struggle. We’ve just lacked a bit of consistency.”

Following the disappointment of an early European exit at the hands of underdogs Hapoel Be’er Sheva in December, attention soon turned to the League Cup as Forster helped guide Southampton to impressive wins over Arsenal and Liverpool to set up a Wembley clash against United.

But, despite the best efforts of an inspired Saints side, Jose Mourinho’s team triumphed 3-2 to extend Southampton’s wait for a first major trophy since their famous FA Cup victory against United in 1976.

“It’s been a strange campaign for us. We did really well in the League Cup, but we didn’t win it in the end,” said Forster, who kept 14 clean sheets after playing every minute of the Saints’ league outings.

“Getting to Wembley and the EFL Cup final was fantastic for us but, equally, if you get to a final you want to win it and I also think for us it would have been fantastic to have finished in the European places again.”

The England international, who has six caps to his name, is no stranger to top-flight European competition.

During his time at Celtic, Forster featured in two consecutive Champions League campaigns and came up against some of the world’s best, helping the Hoops to a historic 2-1 win over Barcelona in 2012.

Now, the 29-year-old has his sights firmly set on achieving European football again and, as the summer transfer window approaches, hopes the club will seek to add strength in depth if they are to mount a challenge next season.

“It will be an important summer for the club and I think, you look at the Europa League experience, and once we’ve had a taste of that a club wants to be there every year and we all do,” he added.

“I think it will be a big summer for us and hopefully, a couple of players will come in and add a bit more depth to the squad.”

Forster stressed the importance of holding onto key players during the transfer window, but admits it’s difficult to prevent heads from being turned when strong individual performances consequently attract interest from other clubs.

“When you look at how good our squad is and how fantastic some of the players have been, it’s always important to keep your main players whatever club you’re at,” he said.

"If we can do that then that will serve us a good foundation for having a good season next year.

"Obviously it’s hard for players when big clubs come in for them and it’s obviously been off the back of them having a great season themselves.

“When you speak to everyone at the club and what they want to achieve, there’s no reason why we can’t keep those players and achieve those things together.”
