Liverpool top Fair Play table for Premier League, but where did your team finish?

Show/hide article…

Liverpool top Fair Play table for Premier League, but where did your team finish?

Liverpool have won the Fair Play award for the 2016/17 Premier League season, but where did your side finish?

Liverpool picked up 54 bookings and went the entire season without receiving a red card, finishing above Swansea in the FA Fair Play table.

Bournemouth were next, picking up 52 bookings and three reds, ahead of Tottenham and Southampton.

Watford had the worst disciplinary record, with 84 yellows and five reds, followed by Sunderland, West Ham and Manchester United.

Liverpool have announced that season ticket holders aged between 17 and 21 will share a £20,000 prize fund for topping the Fair Play table.

It is thought the money will shave £75 off the season ticket price for around 260 of Liverpool’s younger fans.

Previously, topping this table would earn the club a Europa League spot, but that particular ruling was scrapped in 2015, and prize money is now given to be spent on ‘Fair Play or Respect-themed’ projects.

Liverpool also won the award in 2015, and shared that prize money between 300 young fans by again offering them a discount on season tickets.

The FA’s Fair Play table is calculated by a points system:

Austin thrilled to be back

Show/hide article…

The striker returned to the side for the final day of the Premier League season, having overcome the shoulder problem that had sidelined him for more than half of the campaign.

While Austin was disappointed the season ended in a 1-0 defeat, he was delighted to have got himself back on the pitch at St Mary’s.

“It felt good,” he said. "Five-and-a-half months is a long time. I’ve put a lot of hard work in with the medical staff to get back on the pitch and I really enjoyed it.

"I didn’t realise how much I missed it. I was delighted to be out there, I’ve come off injury free and now hopefully I can go and have a good summer and be back ready for next year.

"I’ve worked hard over the five months. It’s been an annoying injury, but you have to get it right and hopefully I’ve got it done now and it’s gone out the way and I can just keep pushing on.

"Not being involved in the run to the [EFL Cup] final was tough, it was mentally tough for me and Virgil as well. We were both injured at the wrong time. No one likes to be injured, but we both had big injuries and have been out for a long time.

"You have to keep your spirits up, because it’s a team game, and you don’t want to come into work all doom and gloom. So my spirits are high.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t come away with the win, but I’ve come away and I’m fit and I can go away now and have a good break with my family and come back ready to go in pre-season and hit the ground running.”

Show/hide article…

More than ever, the Premier League is all about how you use your squad.

Sometimes it pays to keep a consistent XI throughout the campaign, while at other points, especially for those in European competition, it’s important to rotate.

In the past, Claudio Ranieri earned a reputation for the chopping and changing of his starters at Chelsea, while during his time at Leicester City he barely made any alterations.

But which Premier League teams made the most changes this season? Click the right arrow above to find out…

Saints beaten but finish eighth

Show/hide article…

Former Saints striker Peter Crouch decided matters with a towering second-half header, but results elsewhere meant that Claude Puel’s side held onto their spot in the league.

It means a fourth consecutive season in which the club have now finished inside the top eight of the division.

Puel made two changes from the side that drew 0-0 with Manchester United on Wednesday night, as Ryan Bertrand returned at left-back in place of Matt Targett, while Charlie Austin started his first match since December, in place of Manolo Gabbiadini, who dropped to the bench.

It was a fast start to the game, with Stoke launching an attack within the opening minute that ended with Fraser Forster beating away Mame Biram Diouf’s angled shot at the near post.

Saints went straight up the other end and nearly opened up the visitors’ backline, but Bertrand’s low ball across the face of goal was just out of the reach of a sliding Austin.

The hosts were indebted to Cédric later in the half, as he raced back to deny former Southampton striker Crouch with a superb last-ditch tackle, after some defensive hesitancy had allowed the Stoke forward to escape in behind.

Steven Davis then had to do similar five minutes from the interval, as Xherdan Shaqiri broke into space down the inside-left, only to be denied by the sliding Saints midfielder.

Stoke went close again in added time, as Diouf looped a header goalwards, but Cédric was perfectly positioned to nod it off the line.

Seconds later, Stoke keeper Jack Butland got in trouble outside of his area and was dispossessed by Redmond, who turned 30 yards out and chipped the ball over the back-tracking stopper, only for his effort to hit the bar and go over.

Five minutes into the second half Saints did have the ball in the net, as Dušan Tadić played Austin in to rifle home, but he was denied by an offside flag.

Unfortunately for Saints, there was no intervention from the officials at the other end on the hour mark, as Geoff Cameron whipped in a superb cross to the back post and Crouch jumped highest to head the ball into the far corner and put Stoke 1-0 up.

Puel responded by sending on Manolo Gabbiadini and Sofiane Boufal, in place of Austin and Tadić.

Saints were then denied by a superb double save from Butland in the 73rd minute, as he first flung himself in the way of a close-range effort from Steven Davis before getting back on his feet to turn away James Ward-Prowse’s follow-up.

The hosts then had another golden opportunity to level ten minutes from the end, as Davis chipped a beautiful ball in behind to free Gabbiadini, but Butland saved from him one-on-one.

The Stoke keeper was in inspired form and he made another brilliant stop shortly after from Boufal, who had cut onto his left foot in the area, before denying Gabbiadini at the back post from the resulting corner.

Puel made his final change with just under five minutes left, as Ward-Prowse was replaced by Jérémy Pied, but, try as they might, Saints could not find a way past Stoke’s stubborn resistance.
