Match Preview: Saints vs Spurs

Show/hide article…

Southampton head into the weekend in 17th position, one point and one place above the bottom three, but with a number of teams ahead of them within striking distance.

For Spurs, they begin the latest round of matches in fifth position, three points off the top four, and will be keen to at least keep pace with those already occupying the Champions League spots.

Southampton: Maya Yoshida is the main doubt for Southampton, having missed the trip to Watford through injury. The centre-back was due to be assessed today, although Mauricio Pellegrino revealed that there is a good chance the game will come too soon for him.

Tottenham: Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has been suffering from illness and is being monitored ahead of the match. Danny Rose and Harry Winks (both knee) remain out, as does former Southampton defender Toby Alderweireld, who has been missing with a hamstring injury.

FORM GUIDE

TOP PERFORMERS

James Ward-Prowse is the man in form for Saints right now. The midfielder netted his first goal of the season in the 1-0 FA Cup victory at Fulham, before following that up with both the team’s goals in the 2-2 draw at Watford.

Spurs possess a number of significant threats, but none more potent than striker Harry Kane, who has already passed the 30-goal mark for the season. Having netted a hat-trick against Saints last month, he has scored four in his last two, while he is ably assisted by the likes of Dele Alli, Son Heung-Min and Christian Eriksen.

Mauricio Pellegrino ‘optimistic’ about potential January signings at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino is hoping ‘something significant’ will happen with regards to the club’s January transfer business.

The Saints have failed to bring any new signings to this club this month, yet sold Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool in a £75 million deal.

After being beaten to the signing of former youth starlet Theo Walcott by Everton, Pellegrino is still eager to add new recruits to the south coast.

He said: “We are working really hard to try to move one step forwards in different aspects, to bring in players that can help us.

“If we are in this situation now, and no one new is here, it is because we are pushing to try to bring in good players and good players are difficult to bring in.

“But I have to be optimistic that in the next few days something significant will happen.”

Southampton are in a dreadful run of form, having won just twice in their last 12 games. The drastic decline has seen them fall to 17th, just one point above the relegation zone.

Tottenham are the visitors to the St Mary’s stadium on Sunday, and you can listen to the game on talkSPORT from 4pm on Sunday here.

Butterfield pleased with his young side’s reaction

Show/hide article…

Despite a tiresome 120 minutes midweek, Butterfield’s side were confident in possession, outplayed their West London counterparts for the majority, and remained resolute defensively to earn yet another clean sheet.

The victory extends their unbeaten league form to five games, a run stretching back to mid-October, while Saints’ footing in the table has also profited - having climbed to third with those valuable three points.

“I think the lads performed well,” Butterfield reflected. "On the back of a disappointing Youth Cup exit midweek, the reaction from the players was good. They showed commitment out of possession and quality when we had the ball.

"Great response from the boys and we’re pleased with them. For their development, a winning mentality is vitally important. For them to progress to the first-team it is certainly needed, so it is a record we’re proud of as a group. Long may it continue.

"They need to overcome obstacles, such as the loss in the week, to become better players. They need to react mentally and gain a toughness inside yourself, to react to adversity. They’ve showed that today.

“The scoreline could have been more, but another positive result and a clean sheet is certainly a good thing.”

U18 Report: Saints 1-0 Fulham

Show/hide article…

Harry Hamblin netted the decider early in the first period, swivelling in the box before dispatching cooly from close range.

The performance was befitting of all three points, full of industry and endeavour, as Southampton’s young charges extended their unbeaten league streak to five games.

A characteristically energetic start from Craig Fleming’s youngsters reaped plenty of rewards early on, as a succession of good chances led to the opener in the eleventh minute.

Kornelius Hansen was the architect, drifting out wide before curling an inviting cross in to the danger area. The delivery was cleared as far as Harlem Hale, who lofted a pass back on to the six yard line, where Hamblin was most enthusiastic.

The midfielder rolled his defender, using his body to engineer the space, before steadying himself and calmly stroking home to give Saints the lead.

The home side would perhaps rue opportunities missed after the early goal, but were good value for their slender lead, showing good maturity and strength to shake off their midweek FA Youth Cup disappointment.

Timmi Abraham had a chance at the back post midway through the half, but Adam Parkes stood tall and was distraction enough to dissuade the striker. Momentum switched temporarily on the half hour mark, with winger Chris Kelly leading the Fulham charge.

Full of pace and running, the wide man was eating up the yards, and won a promising free-kick in the 34th minute. Reece York struck the dead ball, but Saints’ wall routinely did its job, stubbornly shielding Parkes’s goalmouth.

The hosts entered the break with the advantage, which could have been larger had Jonathan Afolabi’s deft effort not been ruled out for offside.

The visitors made two changes at the break, in the hope of changing their fortunes. Indeed, Fulham enjoyed a spell of pressure at the restart. Kayne Ramsay conceded an avoidable corner, which presented a headed chance for substitute Jose Garrido, but defensively dogged, Saints smothered the danger.

Up at the other end, Afolabi was spearheading a quick fire attack. The frontman got to the byline, before spotting the near post run of Enzo Robise, whose goalbound effort was smartly turned off the line by Jayden Mundle-Smith.

Determined to increase their advantage, knowing that their opposition were also creating chances, Saints were again on the assault in the 55th minute. Harrison Davis guided a floated ball in to the path of Hale, who was subsequently tripped as he gathered the pass.

Jake Vokins, on dead ball duty, didn’t do himself justice with the delivery, but soon had his side on the front foot once more. Turning defence in to attack, the fullback won the ball deep in his half, before powering forward and finding Hansen. Hale took over from there, fizzing the ball towards the desperate run of Robise, who, for all his industry, was unlucky not to latch on to it.

Continuing to press, Hale forced a superb save from Luca Ashby-Hammond as the clock ticked over the hour mark. Saints were going closer.

Hale’s effort was tipped acrobatically on to the crossbar, before Afolabi crafted yet another opening. The home side had some real momentum and tempo to their play, typified by Afolabi, who beat two men before firing at Ashby-Hammond, who was inconveniently equal to it.

Saints closed out the game in control. Christoph Klarer again tested Fulham’s keeper with a powerful header, which wasn’t accurate enough to beat the alert stopper, but was indicative of the home side’s dominance. Three hard-fought points were gained, as Fleming’s young side closed out a tough week on a high.

Mauricio Pellegrino says Southampton will not be forced into panic signings

Mauricio Pellegrino says Southampton will not be forced into making any panic signings during the transfer window.

Sky Sports News understands Monaco rejected the Saints’ offer for striker Guido Carrillo and the club are also interested in signing Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes.

Instead of adding to the squad for the sake of it, Pellegrino wants to bring in players who can help his side, who are currently 17th in the Premier League ahead of hosting Tottenham on Sunday, live on Sky Sports.

“We are working really hard to try to move one step forwards in different aspects, to bring in players that can help us,” said Pellegrino.

"If we are in this situation now, and no one new is here, it is because we are pushing to try to bring in good players and good players are difficult to bring in.

“But I have to be optimistic that in the next few days something significant will happen.”

Southampton missed out on Theo Walcott despite Pellegrino saying the club “did everything” to try and sign him, with the former Southampton winger opting for a move to Everton.

But Pellegrino remains patient with the board on signings and says he would rather sign one player instead of three, who the club were unsure would boost the squad.

“The people at this club, the board and the staff, they have been working with me since day one to try to improve our situation,” Pellegrino added.

"I am working with them, I follow the negotiations and I know they are doing everything to try to bring in new additions.

"But it’s not just about our decisions, because negotiations have two sides.

"If we are waiting now, it’s because now we cannot be too anxious to try to make quick deals. We have to be calm even in difficult situations.

“I’d rather bring in one player instead of three that we wouldn’t be sure would improve the squad.”
