Pochettino brings his Spurs side to the south coast on Sunday, five years to the day since overseeing a goalless draw against Everton at the Saints helm for the first time.

The Argentinian spoke highly of his former club and is looking forward to seeing some familiar faces.

“Five years ago we made our debut against Everton at home,” he said.

“It was our first game in England and I have a lot of good memories from this day and a lot of good memories from Southampton.

“It was a club that we enjoyed a lot, we had an amazing time for a year and a half.

“We love a lot of people there and it’s nice to meet Southampton again.”

Saints are currently one point and one place outside the bottom three, while Spurs are three points adrift of the Champions League spots.

“Sometimes you can have difficulties, but they have a very good squad with a great manager and coaching staff,” he said of Saints.

“We need to be ready to compete and fight because they need points and they need to win.

“For us it is the same. We need to win to be close to the top four.”

Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris (illness) will be assessed ahead of kick-off, but Danny Rose (knee), Harry Winks (ankle) and ex-Saint Toby Alderweireld (hamstring) are definitely out.

Monaco reject Southampton’s offer for Guido Carrillo

Show/hide article…

Monaco have rejected a £17.6m offer from Southampton for striker Guido Carrillo, Sky Sports News understands.

Sky Sports News reported earlier this month that the Saints were keen to sign the 26-year-old, who previously worked with boss Mauricio Pellegrino in their native Argentina.

Carrillo has made 22 appearances this season but just two of them have been starts in Ligue 1. He has scored 20 goals in over 50 appearances for Monaco since signing from Estudiantes in 2015.

Southampton, who sit outside the Premier League relegation places by just a point, are seeking a target man to play alongside Charlie Austin when he returns from injury.

Saints have money to spend following the £75m sale of centre-back Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool, although the fee is to be paid in instalments over the period of his contract.

Speaking on Friday, Pellegrino admitted Southampton tried everything to sign Theo Walcott and suggested Monaco forward Carrillo is on the club’s radar, but maintained he does not want to discuss players who are contracted to other clubs.

“He’s a player I know and the club know,” he said.

"But I will not talk about someone else who is not here. The player is either yours 100 per cent or nothing. One small detail can change the negotiation.

“If we bring people here it is because we feel they will improve the squad.”

Pellegrino keeps faith over new signings

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino insists he remains patient with the club’s board as they work to try and deliver him new signings in January.

Frustration is starting to build in the fanbase after Saints completed a deal for Virgil van Dijk before the January window had even opened, but find themselves virtually three weeks into it and still without a much need fresh face.

Their top target, Theo Walcott, opted for a move to Everton, and Saints are now weighing up a potential club record £30m offer for Spartak Moscow’s Dutch winger Quincy Promes.

A deal for Monaco striker Guido Carrillo also remains a very live possibility.

Pellegrino is adamant the club have to deliver the correct players, rather than signing for the sake of it, even if that takes longer than anyone would want.

“I will repeat that I know, because I am every day with them, we are working really hard to try to move one step forwards in different aspects, players that can help us,” said Pellegrino, whose side take on Tottenham at St Mary’s tomorrow.

“If we are in this situation now, January 20, and no one is here, because we are pushing to try to bring good players, and good players are difficult to bring in.

“But I have to be optimistic that in the next few days something significant will happen.”

When asked how hard it was for him personally to be getting the flack when he isn’t the person responsible for completing deals, he replied: “When you observe the people that work with me, the people in this club, from the first day I feel they are working with me.

“I know what they are doing to try to solve this situation. I am working with them, I follow the negotiations, and I know they are doing everything to try to solve this.

“It’s not just about our decisions, negotiations have two parts.

“If we are waiting now, it’s because now we cannot be too anxious to try to make quick deals.

“We have to be calm even in difficult situations.

“I’d rather bring one player instead of three that we wouldn’t be sure they would improve the squad.”

LAWRIE MAC: VAR still has a long way to go

Show/hide article…

VAR are initials football people are now having to recognise, certainly if you are watching the game at the top level. It stands for Video Assistant Referee.

How many times is there an argument both on and off the field that the referee should have given a free kick, offside or, in most cases, a penalty?

This new system means that there is in effect an extra referee who is planted in a studio somewhere with a screen in front of him covering the game.

Apparently if the referee gives a decision which is immediately questioned by players, crowd, and even in his own mind, he is now able to contact the man with the replays, who is equally qualified, and can give him an answer within seconds.

It sounds good and it was proved to be effective in the first FA Cup third round replay this week. A goal was given offside for Leicester, there was a big question mark, and within a minute it was proved that the player was onside and the referee overruled his original decision, to the delight of the player, manager and the home crowd.

So far, so good.

However, only a day later more people than usual probably watched because BBC covered the game where Chelsea, who surprisingly had been held to a draw at Norwich, had to host a replay at Stamford Bridge.

Most people probably thought it would be easy, but thanks to a strong display by Norwich it went to extra-time.

To be fair it was no surprise that the home team were on top the longer the game went on and the excitement was whether Norwich could hold them back.

This is of course what happened, as the game eventually went to penalties, which fortunately went to the way of Chelsea.

I say fortunately because there was a situation where the referee overruled a penalty appeal for Chelsea and booked Willian for diving.

Anyone watching could tell that the tackle was a bit late, the Norwich defender’s leg went across the Chelsea player’s shins, and there was no other option than to go down.

Everyone thought that would be corrected by the VAR system.

However, it turned out that the referee with the replays didn’t agree it was a mistake, and stood by the referee’s decision.

Not only was there no penalty but a yellow card for the player accused of diving.

A good thing from Mr Conte’s point of view was that they got the result and got through, but there has to be now a big question mark over the use of this new system.

I would like to have been in the referee’s room afterwards, or when they get to together in the days following the game to discuss the situation.

The problem is there is no going back. You can’t play the game again, the result stands, but let’s hope that at least the yellow card can be done away with and an admission that there is still a question mark over this ultra-modern technology.

This one is for athletes with learning disabilities such as Down’s Syndrome and Autism.

There are about 140 branches around Britain and recently a new one has been formed in the Southampton area, which will cover the city plus Winchester, Eastleigh and the New Forest.

They are looking to get athletes to partake in the 40th Anniversary Games, which are being held in Scotland in August, and are putting on a ‘Spinathon,’ to help raise money.

It is taking places Chamberlayne Leisure Centre on Weston Lane.

It starts at 12 noon on Friday, February 2, and finishes at 12 noon the next day.

There will be static bikes lined up and each member of a team has to do at least one hour of the 24 hour challenge.

Teams can be as many as 24 people, although usually four-eight is a good number.

This is an opportunity to not just help out a good charity and raise money to enable these youngsters to take part in sport – which, believe me having been connected for so many years, makes a vast difference to their lives and their families – but it will give groups of people, for instance representing their company, or just pals in the pub, an opportunity to have a laugh, and obviously get fit early in the New Year.

A team must raise £100 to enter and any money collected and donations raised will go directly to the good cause.

READER LETTER: Saints should stick with Pellegrino even if team is relegated

Show/hide article…

ABOUT this time last year I called for Claude Puel to be sacked as Saints manager; the football was awful to watch.

Here we are again, a year later, and we are positioned lower in the league than last season. I think the chairman is right to say that the Virgil van Dijk situation has caused some disruption within the team. But the team have under performed this season. The likes of Lemina, Boufal, Gabiadini ,Tadic and Redmond haven’t played well most of the season.

I had to laugh when I saw Van Dijk kiss the Liverpool badge last week after beating Everton FC because I thought his attitude when playing for Saints was terrible, even though he was under contract.

I hope we don’t sign Theo Walcott because the guy will be 29 in a few weeks. Why pay ridiculously high wages for a player who cannot get into the Arsenal first team?

I do hope we stick with Pellegrino, because the guy seems like a decent manager, even if we are playing in the Championship next season.

The club have sold so many talented players over the last few seasons, something like this was bound to happen.
