Saints complete Carrillo signing

Show/hide article…

The 26-year-old Argentinian today completed his switch from the Ligue 1 champions, signing a contract that runs until June 2021 at St Mary’s.

He links up once again with manager Mauricio Pellegrino, who he played under when the pair were at Estudiantes in their homeland.

It was there that Carrillo began his career, graduating from the youth ranks, before his goalscoring potential caught the eye of Monaco in 2015.

In his two-and-a-half years in Monte Carlo, the forward tasted Champions League football and helped his side break Paris Saint-Germain’s domestic dominance, as they claimed the league title last season for the first time since 2000.

Vice Chairman (Football) Les Reed said: “A huge amount of work has gone in to completing this transfer, and we are thrilled that we have now been able to push it through to completion.

“Guido represents a very exciting addition to our attacking options ahead of the final months of the season, possessing plenty of experience at the highest level, while also having the potential and the desire to improve even further.

“We are confident he will benefit us not only in the remainder of this campaign, but in the years to come.”

Commenting on his move, Guido Carrillo said: "I’m very happy. It’s a great feeling to be a part of this club.

“Lots of things attracted me. I know Southampton from watching the Premier League from when I was small, I’ve always regarded it as the most important league in the world.

“I obviously know the coaching staff, I’ve worked with them in Argentina and I also spoke with some players who were former teammates in Argentina, who are now playing in the Premier League and they told me all about the club and gave it a shining reference. Therefore, I had no doubts when I took the decision.”

Southampton sign striker Carrillo from Monaco

Show/hide article…

Southampton have announced the signing of striker Guido Carrillo from Monaco for an undisclosed fee.

The Argentinian has agreed a deal until 2021 at St Mary’s Stadium and is the club’s first January signing.

“Lots of things attracted me," Carrillo, 26, told Southampton’s official website.

“I know Southampton from watching the Premier League from when I was small, I’ve always regarded it as the most important league in the world.”

Saints are next in Premier League action at home to Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday, 31 January.

Carrillo: “A great feeling”

Show/hide article…

The 26-year-old, who joins from AS Monaco on a club-record fee, was quick to express his delight when speaking for the first time as a Southampton player.

“It’s a great feeling to be a part of this club," he said. "Transfer windows can sometimes be tricky for players because time goes by and sometimes things don’t go as smoothly as you hope.

“Luckily I am here now, I am very happy and I’m ready to get going. The facilities look incredible, it is something that I’ve never seen before. I like it a lot and I can’t wait to get to work here.”

Following a three-and-a-half year spell in Ligue 1, the Argentinian is keen to prove himself at last in the Premier League at a club that received shining references from former team-mates around Europe.

“Lots of things attracted me to the club. I know Southampton from watching the Premier League from when I was small and I’ve always regarded it as the most important league in the world. I had no doubts when I took the decision.”

Whatever the forward brings to his new home, it will be based first on commitment and a desire to do the very best for his team-mates.

“I am someone that will give my all, try my hardest and do whatever is asked of me by the manager. I am an attacking player than can lead the line and bring others into play. I like to be active in and around the box to put away chances which for strikers is clearly the most important thing.

“Southampton have had a lot of games in a short space of time and if you look at the table, six points separates seven or eight teams in the table. Hopefully we can win two or three games in a row and keep going that way.

“I will show what I am about, I think we have good players and I think we can improve things.”

Guido Carrillo: Southampton sign Monaco striker in £19m deal

Show/hide article…

Southampton have signed striker Guido Carrillo from Monaco in a £19m deal.

The 26-year-old Argentine, who scored five goals in 22 appearances for the French side this season, has signed a contract until 2021 at St Mary’s.

“I’m very happy. It’s a great feeling to be a part of this club,” he said.

The deal reunites Carrillo with Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino, after previously working with him at boyhood club Estudiantes in their native Argentina.

“Lots of things attracted me,” Carrillo added. “I know Southampton from watching the Premier League from when I was small, I’ve always regarded it as the most important league in the world.”

Carrillo scored 20 goals for Monaco after signing from Estudiantes in 2015 and helped the club to the Ligue 1 title last season.

Pellegrino had been expected to reinvest the windfall from Virgil van Dijk’s £75m move to Liverpool and made adding a striker a priority, with top scorer Charlie Austin injured and both Shane Long and Manolo Gabbiadini struggling for goals.

The south-coast club have also been linked with a £30m move for Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes.

Southampton vice-chairman Les Reed said: "Guido represents a very exciting addition to our attacking options ahead of the final months of the season.

“We are confident he will benefit us not only in the remainder of this campaign, but in the years to come.”

Southampton sign Guido Carrillo from Monaco on three-and-a-half-year deal

Show/hide article…

Southampton have announced the signing of Guido Carrillo from AS Monaco on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

Sky Sports reported on Wednesday that an agreement of £19.1m had reached with Monaco to sign the Argentine striker.

After completing his move, Carrillo said: "I’m very happy. It’s a great feeling to be a part of this club.

"Lots of things attracted me.

"Guido represents a very exciting addition to our attacking options ahead of the final months of the season, possessing plenty of experience at the highest level, while also having the potential and the desire to improve even further.

“We are confident he will benefit us not only in the remainder of this campaign, but in the years to come.”

The Saints had been in pursuit of Carrillo for the past week and saw an initial £17.6m offer for the 26-year-old rejected, Sky Sports News understands.

Carrillo has made 22 appearances this season, but has started only twice in Ligue 1. He has scored 20 goals in over 50 games for Monaco since signing from Estudiantes in 2015.
