Southampton agree fee with Monaco for Carrillo - report

(Reuters) - Southampton have reached an agreement to sign Monaco’s Argentine striker Guido Carrillo, Sky Sports News reported on Wednesday, citing a source.
The report said the clubs had agreed a 22 million euro (19.26 million pounds) fee for the 26-year-old.
The Saints, who have slipped into the relegation zone, were this week named the 18th richest soccer club in the world, by accountancy firm Deloitte, but have struggled up front this season.
Charlie Austin, the team’s top scorer with six goals, is injured. His fellow forwards Manolo Gabbiadini and Shane Long have scored three and one, respectively, and Carrillo will boost manager Mauricio Pellegrino’s options up front.
The manager worked with Carrillo, who has scored five goals for Monaco this season, at Argentine club Estudiantes in 2015.
Southampton have money to spend after selling centre back Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool for a reported 75 million pounds and Pellegrino said after that deal that the club would look to bring in three players, including a striker.

Saints ‘agree’ £19.1m fee for Carrillo

SAINTS have agreed a £19.1m fee for Monaco striker Gudio Carrillo, according to Sky Sports News and the Telegraph.
Mauricio Pellegrino stated at the start of this week that he hoped Saints would seal deals for Carrillo and Spartak Moscow attacker Quincy Promes.
Dutch winger Promes could obliterate the club’s transfer record if he arrives from Spartak Moscow for a fee of around £30m, while it has been reported a fee has been agreed for big Argentinian striker Carrillo.
Saints had a lower bid rejected by Monaco, but have returned with an offer the Ligue 1 reigning champions could not refuse.
If the deal goes through it would smash the club’s previous transfer record, which was the £17m paid to Juventus for Mario Lemina last summer.
“Hopefully next week will be a good week for us,” said Pellegrino.
“In the market anything can change in one second. It’s like football.
“Negotiation is about two sides and you have limitations to arrive at a point and then you need the other part to do the job.”

Southampton are hopeful of concluding a deal for Monaco striker Guido Carrillo after increasing their offer to £19million.
The 26-year-old Argentine striker is keen to link up with Mauricio Pellegrino.
Pellegrino also wants to bring in Quincy Promes from Spartak Moscow.
Meanwhile, Monaco have rejected a £39m offer from Napoli for Keita Balde.
The reigning French champions hold an interest in Leicester City’s Islam Slimani.
Carrillo has featured 23 times in all competitions for Monaco this season, scoring five goals.
Only five of his appearances have come from the starting XI, with the likes of Radamel Falcao, Adama Diakhaby and Keita Balde Diao preferred in attack.

SUTTON United boss Paul Doswell rates young strike prospect Tommy Wright as “the best I’ve seen in a long time.”
The 21-year-old from Shirley, Southampton, is tearing up the Vanarama National League this season with ten goals in 26 appearances for the Gander Green Lane outfit.
With 1,350 playing minutes under his belt in the league this term, that equates to one goal every 135 minutes – the best scoring rate in non-League’s top flight.
Wright reached double figures by scoring Sutton’s opener in last Saturday’s 2-1 home win over Dagenham & Redbridge which left Doswell’s Us third in the table.
The ex-Otterbourne youngster intercepted a soft back-header before rounding goalkeeper Mark Cousins to score.
The coolness of that finish will come as no surprise to Salisbury fans who watched Wright tear defences apart on loan at the Ray Mac from Sutton last season.
Wright scored no fewer 52 goals in all competitions for Steve Claridge’s Whites, forming a formidable partnership with seasoned marksman Justin Bennett to propel Salisbury to the Southern One South & West play-off final.
“Tommy’s been brilliant,” said former Eastleigh boss Doswell.
“It was the right thing to send him to Salisbury. He got 52 goals and grew very confident on the back of it.”
Unsurprisingly Wright’s sharp-shooting form has not gone unnoticed by scouts from the professional ranks.
“We’ve had approaches in terms of what the situation is with him,” said Doswell.
“One Championship club and two League One clubs have been in touch.
“He’s at the top of his game at the moment and I believe he could go to the Championship now.
“But it’s more likely that clubs will watch him during the season and make a move during the summer.
“As always, we won’t stand in a player’s way of progressing.
“Tommy’s a lovely, laid-back young man with no airs and graces and no pretensions about what he could or couldn’t be.
“We signed him on the recommendation of Stuart Munro when he was Otterbourne chairman.
“Stuart and a lot of the Otterbourne lads are now at Alresford and Tommy’s still very close to them all and goes and watches games.
“In his first year with us, Tommy went out on loan to Farnborough and Staines and didn’t really pull up any trees, but since sending him to Salisbury in his second year, he looks a completely different player and is getting in our side ahead of some very good players.
“There’s at least 40 per cent of the season left and if he gets 20 goals in his first year at this level, that’ll be a great achievement.”
Wright was voted Sutton’s SUFCtv player-of-the-month for December during which he scored in a 2-0 home win over Eastleigh. He finished ahead of Craig Eastmond and ex-Spitfire Jamie Collins in the poll.

Southampton could announce the club-record signing of AS Monaco striker as soon as Thursday.
The south coast have had a bid of £19.1 million accepted by Monaco, after initially failing with an offer of £13 million.
According to L’Equipe, terms have been agreed and official confirmation is expected within the next 24 hours.
The 26-year-old Argentinean has scored four goals in 15 Ligue 1 appearances so far this term, with 13 of those coming from the bench.
Southampton have only managed to score 24 goals in 24 Premier League games this season.
Mauricio Pellegrino has even reverted to the kids to solve his scoring problems, bringing on 17-year-old Michael Obafemi from the bench in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.
The Saints lie in 17th place, just a point off the relegation places and with an FA Cup fourth tie against Watford at St Mary’s to deal with on Saturday.
