Southampton have come to an agreement with Monaco for the transfer of striker Guido Carrillo, Sky sources understand.
The two clubs have settled on a £19.1m [€22m] fee which will see Carrillo make the switch to the Premier League.
Southampton have made clear their desire to add a forward during the January transfer window and manager Mauricio Pellegrino earmarked Carrillo as his primary striking target.
As reported by Sky Sports, Saints had a £17.6m offer for the 26-year-old rejected by Monaco earlier in the week.
However, the reigning French champions are now willing to sanction the deal.
Pellegrino previously worked with Carrillo in his native Argentina and rates the forward highly.
Carrillo has made 22 appearances this season but just two of them have been starts in Ligue 1. He has scored 20 goals in over 50 appearances for Monaco since signing from Estudiantes in 2015.
Saints have money to spend following the £75m sale of centre-back Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool, although the fee is to be paid in instalments over the period of his contract.
Monaco have agreed to sell striker Guido Carrillo to Southampton for €22 million (£19.2m). The deal has not yet been finalised but Carrillo is expected to make the move before the end of the January transfer window.
The signing of Carrillo will be a huge relief to Southampton’s under-pressure manager Mauricio Pellegrino, who has been desperate to add to his attacking options. Southampton are also bidding for the Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes who is expected to cost at least a club record £30m.
Both deals are being funded through the £75m Southampton received at the beginning of this month when they sold captain Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool.
Southampton remain winless in the Premier League since November and sit just outside the relegation zone. With Charlie Austin injured and Shane Long short of goals, they are in need of more firepower with Carrillo having been identified as the solution.
The 26-year-old, 6ft 2in Argentinean has featured infrequently this season for Monaco in France’s Ligue 1 – scoring five goals this season - and Southampton had hoped to complete a deal that would cost around £15m. That has been pushed up to £19.2m by Monaco.
