How Pochettino went from reluctant hero to Spurs saint within five years in England

Show/hide article…

It is five years to the week since a reluctant Mauricio Pochettino was persuaded to England by his wife Karina and assistant Jesus Perez. The Argentine, who feared the opportunity had come too soon, was initially an unwanted unknown at Southampton but on Sunday he returns to St Mary’s with Tottenham as one of the best coaches in Europe.

Pochettino barely spoke any English, fuelling the early scepticism, but he knew the words “press” and “brave”, and he quickly won hearts and minds in the dressing room and on the terraces.

Adam Lallana, now at Liverpool, remembers a shift in mentality under the former Argentina centre-half. “He didn’t change everything,” Lallana said. “But he’d always want more.”

Saints beat Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool before the end of that first campaign and, the following season, they finished eighth - then a club-record high - playing Pochettino’s trademark high-intensity pressing football.

He had inherited a fine squad, but he took every player to a new level and his spell on the South Coast was marked by a flurry of England caps. Rickie Lambert, Lallana, Jay Rodriguez and Luke Shaw were all called-up - and the trend continued at Tottenham, with Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Danny Rose and others. No club manager has done more for the national team in the last five years.

When Spurs began their search for a new manager - long before Tim Sherwood was dismissed in May, 2014 - they initially considered Louis van Gaal and Frank de Boer. But Daniel Levy, the chairman, was impressed by Pochettino.

In his first interview with Levy, Pochettino explained his philosophy on football and on life but, out of respect, he refused to detail what he would do with Spurs while he was still employed by Saints. The pair’s relationship remains a key factor in the club’s recent success.

“He immediately changed the mindset of a lot of players at the club,” said former Spurs midfielder Ryan Mason. “He had such a positive mindset and he had a massive impact straight away. [Pochettino and his coaches] were constantly speaking and everything was positive. There was never anything negative. Your brain gets used to hearing good things all the time.”

But elsewhere he was met with resistance within a mismatched squad of overpaid underachievers. It was not until November 2014, with Pochettino already starting to fear for his job, that he decided to do things “my way” following a 2-1 win over Aston Villa, clinched by Kane’s last-minute goal. The manager ditched a cartel of senior players and put his faith in youth.

Spurs have never looked back, building on a fifth-place finish to push champions Leicester City and then Chelsea all the way, clinching a record-high Premier League finish and points-total last season. Pochettino can reflect that Spurs were comfortably the best team in England over a two-year period.

Privately, the 45-year-old feels he has not quite earned the credit he deserves. His teams pressed long before Jurgen Klopp arrived at Liverpool; he used a back-three before Antonio Conte popularised it; and his sides built from the back before Manchester City mastered it under Pep Guardiola.

It is not only Pochettino’s English that has improved. He is still evolving and his knack of learning from mistakes is particularly impressive, particularly in the Champions League.

Some critics remain, pointing to his lack of a trophy with Spurs, but given his achievements so far, it should not take another five years to silence the last of them.

Spurs setback with Lloris a doubt vs Southampton

Show/hide article…

Hugo Lloris is a doubt for Tottenham’s Premier League trip to Southampton as the goalkeeper struggles with illness.

Sunday’s visit to St. Mary’s could be the third time Lloris has missed a game through illness in a year after skipping trips to Sunderland and Swansea City last season.

The club captain has missed just one Premier League games this season, as a muscle injury saw third-choice Paulo Gazzaniga named man of the match on his debut as Crystal Palace were beaten 1-0 at Wembley.

Second-choice Michel Vorm is fit to deputise at St. Mary’s if needed.

Toby Alderweireld is nearing a return to the first team after almost three months out with a hamstring injury.

The defender has resumed outdoor training alone and hopes to join the squad after Sunday, with the trip to Anfield on February 4 the target to get back on the pitch.

Harry Winks continues to struggle with an ankle injury and Danny Rose is not yet ready to return from his knee problem.

Tottenham team news: Hugo Lloris a doubt for Southampton clash due to illness

Show/hide article…

Tottenham face being without goalkeeper Hugo Lloris for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Southampton.

Lloris has been taken unwell with flu and boss Mauricio Pochettino is desperate for his number one to feature in the match against his former club.

But the Argentine coach will monitor the Frenchman’s situation closely and will not take any risks before naming his side for Sunday’s trip to the south coast, with number two Michel Vorm ready to step in.

Meanwhile, key central defender Toby Alderweireld is close to a return to training following a hamstring problem.

But Danny Rose (knee) and Harry Winks (ankle) are both in need of further treatment before they can rejoin the first team squad for full training.

Maya Yoshida in contention

Show/hide article…

The 29-year-old missed Saints’ controversial slatemate with Watford last weekend, but has been making steady progress at Staplewood this week.

“I think Maya will be a part of Saturday’s training session, maybe - but that will be decided tomorrow," the manager commented.

“If Maya is able to make the squad, maybe Charlie [Austin] will be the only one on the injury list.

“So we’ll be fully ready in this important moment.”

Pellegrino: We did “everything” to sign Walcott

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has admitted Saints did “everything” to try and bring Theo Walcott back to St Mary’s, but insisted the club are now focussed on fresh transfer targets.

Walcott was Saints’ top target for the January window, but the club’s former academy graduate opted for a move to Everton instead.

It has left Saints having to explore other avenues, with fans getting increasingly impatient at the lack of new signings.

Of the Walcott deal Pellegrino said: “That is part of the market.

“The market has got offers and demands.

“I think we did everything to try to bring this possibility here but we have to accept that. It’s part of our job.

“When you are in negotiations they are about two parts and we can do nothing.”

He added: “Obviously the money is part of the negotiations but I don’t know the reason.

“We have got in our club is the concern to try and bring a couple of targets.

“We have got another option and we have to continue with our job.

“Sometimes we expect this and we have to be prepared for this because it’s part of the market.”

Saints face Tottenham at St Mary’s on Sunday, with Maya Yoshida touch and go to be fit.

Pellegrino will make a late decision on his availability after training tomorrow.

Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris set to miss Southampton clash

Show/hide article…

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is likely to be without Hugo Lloris for Sunday’s trip to Southampton with the French goalkeeper suffering from illness.

Lloris is set to be replaced by Michel Vorm but there is good news for Spurs in that Toby Alderweireld is to return to full first-team training.

Pochettino is looking to stay in the race for the Premier League’s top four and said: ‘We need to wait and assess him (Lloris). I think it is flu or a virus. Everyone with this weather will struggle a bit.’

On Alderweireld’s return to training, Pochettino added: ‘I’m very pleased. You can see his preparation is to be available again like Harry Winks and Danny Rose.

‘We are going to have a very busy period and we need all the squad available to play.

‘If all is well he will do the warm-up (on Saturday) with the team and will be integrated gradually with the group. He will be ready as soon as possible.’

The 28-year-old defender has been out with a hamstring injury since November.

The Belgium international picked up the injury during Tottenham’s famous 3-1 victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League at Wembley.
