That win was crucial, says Romeu

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin’s late penalty ensured all three points at St Mary’s, and Romeu was impressed with the way in which Saints fought right until the end.

“Winning was crucial,” he started.

“Even more after the sending off and putting ourselves 2-0 up, but we struggling to control the game and find the third goal.

“They came back and put the chances they had away, so we had to react and put all our effort in right until the end.”

Manolo Gabbiadini and Dušan Tadić’s first half strikes gave Saints an early lead, though Javier Hernandez netted twice to bring West Ham level.

And although Romeu was disappointed to concede two, he was also pleased that Saints were able to find the net three times at St Mary’s.

“It’s what we wanted,” he continued.

“Creating chances is probably one of the most difficult things in football, but we have been able to do that recently.

“We haven’t been able to put those away but we did that today and scored three goals. Now we need to make sure we improve defensively before the next one.”

Mario Lemina reveals gruesome gash inflicted by Mark Noble

Show/hide article…

Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina has revealed the damage caused by Mark Noble’s challenge during Saturday’s win over West Ham.

Referee Lee Mason decided not to punish the Irons skipper after he flew into the Saints’ summer signing, leaving his mark on the £18million man.

And the Gabon international showcased his battle wounds on Sunday, posting a photo of his shin complete with a bloody gash down the middle.

Lemina was replaced after the hour-mark, making way for James Ward-Prowse, but was delighted to register his first win in the Premier League after last week’s goalless draw against Swansea.

‘Difficult win but three points at home!’, the 23-year-old wrote on Instagram after the St Mary’s win.

Mauricio Pelligrino will hope his club-record signing can be patched up and raring to go next week as he hopes to continue the momentum gained against West Ham.

Saints have a tricky week ahead as they welcome Wolves on Wednesday in the second round of the League Cup before travelling to Premier League new boys Huddersfield next weekend.

Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool: Steven Gerrard urges Anfield chiefs to sign Southampton star

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk is needed at Liverpool, Steven Gerrard has said

Southampton accused the Reds of making an illegal approach for Van Dijk earlier this summer but he remains a top target for Jurgen Klopp.

The Saints star has since handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force a move to Anfield.

And Gerrard believes Van Dijk is a must-buy if Liverpool are to challenge for silverware.

“Yes (he is a necessity),” the Kop favourite said on BT Sport.

“For me if you want to compete in the league and in the Champions League (he is needed).

“It’s been well documented that we need two or three signings in.”

Pellegrino: We can build on Hammers success

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin’s late penalty secured the first victory of the season, after Manolo Gabbiadini and Dušan Tadić had also opened their accounts.

And while the Saints boss was pleased with a crucial win, he feels there is still room for improvement.

“I think in the first-half, particularly the first 25 minutes we played well. We had the possibility to score goals and we arrived in wide areas with efficiency,” Pellegrino reflected.

“In counter-attacks we were really dangerous. After the second goal for me, we could not control the ball, not in terms of possession because we had it, but in terms of scoring the third goal we need to be more clinical in those moments.”

On the goalscorers, he added: “The important thing is if they score it’s the best for the team.

“For the strikers, scoring goals completes their work but the best thing is that we won against a strong team.”

Kop legend urges Virgil van Dijk to join Liverpool

Show/hide article…

PREMIER League legend Steven Gerrard is urging Saints’ defender Virgil van Dijk to leave the club this summer and join Liverpool.

Gerrard, who played 710 games for Liverpool during a glittering career, is reported to have said his former club need to sign van Dijk in order compete in the Premier League and in Europe.

When asked whether van Dijk was needed, the 37-year-old said: “Yes (he is a necessity).”

It comes days after Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger reaffirmed that van Dijk is “not for sale in this window” and that keeping him was a “statement we need to make”.

Earlier this month, the Dutch centre-half handed in a transfer request, after weeks of agitating for a move away from St Mary’s.

The 26-year-old has not featured for Saints since suffering an ankle injury in January.

He has been training with the club’s Under-23s throughout pre-season.

Liverpool and the club’s manager Jurgen Klopp have long wanted to sign the Dutch international to bolster their squad’s defence.

Yesterday, Saints’ continued their unbeaten start to the season, clinching a last-gasp 3-2 victory over 10-man West Ham.

Football fan books bargain hotel ‘near’ team’s ground then realises his mistake

Show/hide article…

An ‘unlucky’ Walsall supporter thought he had found a bargain hotel deal when he went to watch his team play at Portsmouth .

But the devoted Saddlers fan was stunned when he arrived to discover his accommodation was on the Isle of Wight 11 miles away - and he would need a ferry to get there.

Football fan Davey Drew tweeted about the unfortunate mistake as he took the ferry across the Solent.

He tweeted a photo from the ferry saying: “Ffs, this f ing hotel is on the isle of f ing wight, I’ve now got to check in then get the ferry back, 11 miles from pompey my a_*_.”

The amusing tweet quickly went viral, with 17,000 likes and over 8,000 retweets.

Just the day before, he tweeted that he was “buzzing” after finding the cheap deal online.

He said: “Buzzing for tomorrow…hotel booked, just 11 miles from pompey and an absolute bargain #saddlers.”

After realising his error, he tweeted the football club: “Is there any chance you could delay kick off, I’ve had a mare.”

Luckily for Davey, Walsall FC took pity on him and have invited him to meet the team and reimbursed his travel to Portsmouth.

Walsall boss Jon Whitney told the Sun : "[Midfielder] Joe Edwards offered to pay his ferry fare. I’ll chip in as well.

“It’s a funny one but it’s great. It’s a story for him to tell people so I think it will be quite popular on social media.

“We might get to meet him and bring him out and let him see the fans at one home game. We’ll pay his fare for him and help him out.”
