WATCH: Chicharito double in vain

Show/hide article…

Javier Hernandez scored a double for West Ham but it proved in vain as Southampton nicked a victory.

The striker was scoring his first Premier League goals since April 2014 (1232 days ago).

Amazingly, all 39 of his goals in the English top-flight have come inside the box. Indeed, only Tim Cahill (56) and John Terry (41) and have scored more Premier League goals without ever netting one from outside the box than Hernandez.

The striker didn’t deserve to be on the losing side as this looks £16m well spent already.

Despite playing the majority of the game with 10-men, the Hammers made the most of their limited territory with Hernandez finishing the only two chances that came his way - both from inside the six-yard box. His all-round game was also of top quality, including when mucking in as a makeshift left-winger.

It’s good to have him back in the Premier League.

Watch the above video to see Hernandez at his poaching best.

Riyad Mahrez’s Leicester teammates tell fans not to question his commitment

Show/hide article…

Riyad Mahrez’s team-mates are urging Leicester City fans not to see parallels with Philippe Coutinho and Virgil van Dijk in the Algerian international’s intention to leave the club during the transfer window.

Neither Liverpool’s Coutinho nor Southampton’s Van Dijk has played in their respective teams’ opening Premier League matches after signalling their desire to move to bigger clubs, with question marks over their state of mind.

By contrast, Mahrez, who submitted a transfer request at the end of May, played a full part in Leicester’s vibrant performance in defeat at Arsenal and set up both goals as they comfortably saw off newcomers Brighton on Saturday – even though time is running out to secure a move.

It was from his partially saved shot that Shinji Okazaki put Leicester ahead inside the first minute and from his corner that the impressive Harry Maguire doubled their lead early in the second half.

Signed for £400,000 from Le Havre in 2014, Mahrez is now on the radar of some of Europe’s biggest clubs, but the last 10 days of the transfer window could pass in a stalemate, with Leicester reportedly asking £50 million for him.

Leaky West Ham prove the ideal visitors for Southampton

Show/hide article…

What do you give Southampton, the team without a Premier League home goal since early April?

The unfortunate punchline is Slaven Bilic’s West Ham, who have now conceded 91 goals in their last 50 Premier League games and were once again hospitable visitors.

For Mauricio Pellegrino, this was a first victory in English football and brought an end to a run of six goalless home games for Southampton. It was also a positive way to end a week in which the Chinese investor Jisheng Gao purchased 80 per cent of the club in a long-awaited takeover.

Forty-four minutes into this game and it appeared Southampton would be celebrating a rout. Two goals up through a Manolo Gabbiadini strike and a Dusan Tadic penalty, the home side were also a man up after a crazed moment of indiscipline from West Ham’s club record signing, Marko Arnautovic.

Bilic did not seek excuses for Arnautovic for the elbow on Jack Stephens.

‘All I can say is that it was very hard for us and a big, massive blow for the team to be down and play with 10 men for the majority of the game. But he’s very talented and everybody knows why we got him.’

West Ham were almost reprieved by a devastating intervention from another summer signing, Javier Hernandez, who struck on the stroke of half-time and then in the 74th minute.

But deep into stoppage time, Pablo Zabaleta pushed Maya Yoshida as the pair contested a header in the penalty area. Charlie Austin stepped up and coolly sent Joe Hart the wrong way.

As Southampton chased the game, Pellegrino took risks as he brought on Shane Long and Austin, signifying a shift from the ponderous approach of Claude Puel last season. Austin added: ‘The manager told me, “Go and get the winner”. It shows we are going to play attacking football and as a striker that is a delight.’

West Ham began last season with five defeats in six but Bilic said: ‘Although I’m very disappointed I’m going to take a lot of positives from how we played.’

Southampton 3 West Ham 2: Charlie Austin thinks Saints more attack minded this season

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin thinks Southampton’s boring days are behind them under Mauricio Pellegrino

Pellegrino’s predecessor Claude Puel was sacked for his dour football despite leading Saints to eighth and Wembley last season in the EFL Cup.

His replacement saw his side end their nine-hour home goal drought in style with a thrilling last-gasp triumph over 10-man West Ham.

And match-winner Austin said: “When I came on the manager said, ‘go and get the winner’. That shows we are going to try and play attacking football this year.

“As a striker that is a delight to see. We were delighted to score three goals at home and the main thing was to get the three points.

“Wins bring out character. We have a lot of big characters in the dressing room and this result is definitely going to spur us on.”

Mahrez shows Coutinho and Van Dijk how to act after a transfer request

Show/hide article…

While Diego Costa, Philippe Coutinho and Virgil van Dijk sulk, Riyad Mahrez will mark 12 weeks since handing in his transfer request knowing he was instrumental in this Leicester City win.

The same will be asked of Danny Drinkwater, who is due back in first-team training on Monday and in line to face Manchester United this weekend, despite speculation surrounding him and Chelsea.

It is business as usual, as far as Leicester are concerned. Craig Shakespeare has spoken to Mahrez and Drinkwater, who are both aware that they play for the badge on the front of the shirt and not the names on the back.

Despite telling the world in a statement on May 30 that he wanted to leave Leicester, Mahrez’s team-mates have not held a grudge in the dressing room.

They want him to stay, particularly after witnessing the way he pulled the strings in their first Premier League win of the season over Brighton & Hove Albion.

The goals were scored by Shinji Okazaki and Harry Maguire but set up by Mahrez, and Danny Simpson said: 'As soon as the whistle went you knew he was up for it.

'When he’s like that he’s unstoppable. He was unlucky in the second half, he had a little (Diego) Maradona moment, and got his assists. The goals will come.

‘You want your best players at the club. Hopefully he stays with us.’

Leicester midfielder Matty James added: 'He is a really, really grounded lad. He remembers exactly where he has come from. The club took him (from Ligue 2 Le Havre for £400,000 in 2014) and he has done a lot for this football club so we don’t want to ruin that relationship.

'Riyad has been very respectful. He might have his own ambitions but ultimately he is a Leicester City player.

‘You have just got to see what happens. For the players, if he goes, he goes. If he stays, he stays. All the lads know that they want him here. It is simple as that.’

Mahrez is on £100,000 a week at Leicester, having signed a four-year contract in August 2016.

Shakespeare will continue to select him until told otherwise, and the same goes for Drinkwater. As long as Leicester pay their wages, they have to perform.

‘When there’s all the speculation, it’s hard for players to get their heads round it,’ Shakespeare said. 'For me, it should be quite easy. You perform and if you are asked to represent the football club that you are paid by, then you do that.

‘From Riyad’s point of view, from day one when he made the statement, he’s come in to training, worked hard and we need that to continue.’

As for Drinkwater, the 27-year-old trained outside on his own on Friday and Saturday following a thigh strain and is due to be back with the squad on Monday.

He too is subject to interest with Chelsea in the market for a midfielder. Shakespeare will decide whether to include Drinkwater in the squad to face Sheffield United in the League Cup second round on Tuesday.

Leicester’s £17million summer signing Maguire sealed this win with a header, completing an excellent performance at centre back. England manager Gareth Southgate will be well aware.

On a call-up, Shakespeare said: 'I’ve always said to players, ‘Perform for your club and those things will take care of themselves’.

‘He is performing in the Premier League, one of the best leagues in the world, and he has to get that consistency in his game first.’

Brighton were run ragged by Mahrez and Leicester, and are still awaiting their first Premier League goal. ‘We can’t keep saying it is a learning curve,’ Shane Duffy said. ‘We will get caught out.’

Lazio sporting director confirms Wesley Hoedt joining Southampton

Show/hide article…

Lazio sporting director Ighli Tare has confirmed that Wesley Hoedt will be joining Southampton.

Sky sources reported last week that the Saints were in advanced talks to sign the 23-year-old Netherlands international centre-back.

Sky in Italy believe the south-coast club offered an initial £15.5m but are now reporting the final deal is worth £17m.

Tare told Italian broadcaster Premium Sport: "He requested to be transferred. He wants to be a starter in England and will be transferred to Southampton in the near future.

“He has had a positive experience here in Rome. I wish him all the best.”

Sky Sports News understands former AZ Alkmaar man Hoedt’s arrival would not have implications on the future of want-away centre-back Virgil van Dijk.

Southampton have consistently maintained Van Dijk is not for sale this summer and have been in the market for a new centre-half regardless.

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino is hoping to reintegrate Van Dijk, who has been a target for Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea, back into the squad. He has not played for Southampton yet this season.

THE VERDICT: Saints take their chance to create momentum

Show/hide article…

Footballing momentum can shift on things as simple as playing the right team at the right time.

After six home league games in a row without a goal for Saints, the last thing they needed was another Swansea to turn up at St Mary’s – a team with discipline who are prepared to stick at a game plan, get men behind the ball and defend for their lives.

Thankfully for Saints, they played West Ham, a team who showed very little discipline, especially in the first half, and who always had half an eye on attack.

It was an important day for Mauricio Pellegrino, who must have felt he needed a home win after the opening day goalless draw with Swansea at St Mary’s.

He really needed the side to get something going, and to try and build some momentum and confidence in front of goal.

Thank goodness then for West Ham, a squad packed full of quality on paper but seemingly only sporadic cohesion as a team out on the pitch.

They still needed beating of course, the chances still needed taking, referee Lee Mason still had to have his helpful input, but to just have the opportunity to do just that was a blessing for Saints.

And now they have kick-started their season and given themselves a platform to build on.

With one Premier League game left before the first international break – that away to promoted Huddersfield – Saints can actually relax a bit. Pellegrino too.

He has had a baptism of fire walking into a squad low on self-belief in the final third and with a star player so desperate to get away he has handed in a transfer request. Also the owners of the club have changed in the few weeks since he arrived. What a whirlwind.

All Pellegrino wants and needs to really stamp his authority on the team and the club is wins, and as many as possible as quickly as possible.

He also wants to get the crowd behind him and the team, which means showing some clear dividing lines between his management of largely the same squad that Claude Puel had.

To the fans that means entertainment and goals.

It would have taken the harshest of critics to complain they were short changed for excitement and drama on Saturday.

Indeed, the serene and quiet life seemed almost desirable for a brief period when it looked as if Saints were going to squander a golden opportunity for three points.

That it came to that, that they needed a stoppage time penalty, and in fairness a few moments of fortune throughout the game to get there given they played against ten men for two-thirds of it, was perhaps a little concerning.

So, too, by Pellegrino’s own admission their struggles to deal with direct balls into the box.

But these are early days, and all that really matters is that they survived the test of character and found a way to get through it and get the job done.

After Marko Arnautovic fired wide Saints broke their home scoring duck after nine hours and 15 minutes when Manolo Gabbiadini and Nathan Redmond combined and the former finished off the move with a shot across goal into the bottom corner.

Arnautovic troubled Fraser Forster with a header before a pivotal moment in the game when the West Ham midfielder senselessly closed in on Jack Stephens and slammed an arm into his neck.

He was seething that Mario Lemina hadn’t been punished for leading with his arm in an aerial duel moments earlier that left Arnautovic writhing on the ground holding his face but it was little excuse – especially as Mark Noble got away with a bad challenge in the aftermath of that incident.

Referee Mason brandished the red card and West Ham totally lost the plot as Jose Fonte, looking a shadow of the colossus he was as a Saints player, hauled back Steven Davis to present Dusan Tadic with the chance to make it 2-0 from the penalty spot, which he did, albeit unconvincingly via the trailing legs of Joe Hart.

Saints looked to have the game in the bag with the Hammers looking ready to throw in the towel altogether.

However, Saints let them back into it seconds before half time as Michail Antonio turned Oriol Romeu outside the box and fired in a low shot that Forster did well to save, only to see Javier Hernandez react quickest to the loose ball to turn home.

That boost was all the encouragement West Ham needed to get their act together.

They were a far more resolute and determined side in the second half and looked as though they fancied it.

Saints breathed a sigh of relief as they got away with a handball in the area by Jack Stephens, while up the other end there was a lack of positivity.

Gabbiadini clipped the top of the bar with an effort from range while Tadic forced Hart into a save, but it was only a minor surprise when West Ham equalised on 74 minutes.

Richard Cresswell’s left wing cross picked out the head of Diafra Sakho. Forster made a good reaction save to turn it onto the underside of the bar, but again it was Hernandez who got to the loose ball first and produced a wonderful volley from close range for 2-2.

At that stage Pellegrino reacted and gave Saints more attacking tools.

It looked like it was too little too late as Redmond’s deflected shot hit the bar and Saints were continually frustrated.

But then Pablo Zabaleta tried to give Maya Yoshida enough of a nudge to disrupt his header at goal and Mason awarded another penalty, which Charlie Austin duly tucked away for a stoppage time winner.

A turning point? Only time will tell, but this is exactly what Pellegrino needed - a win, goals and a very different feeling for fans leaving the ground to that which they have experienced over the last five months.

It’s a “delight to see” Saints playing attacking football, says Austin

Show/hide article…

CHARLIE Austin admits it’s a “delight to see” Saints playing attacking football this season, following his last-gasp penalty winner in the five-goal thriller against West Ham at St Mary’s on Saturday.

The 3-2 victory ended a club-record 556 minutes without a home goal and marked Mauricio Pellegrino’s first triumph as boss.

Austin came on as a late substitute with fellow forward Shane Long as Pellegrino threw his final dice in an attempt to bag all three points against ten-man Hammers, who had Marko Arvautovic sent off in the first half.

Asked what his manager’s instructions were when he was introduced in the 80th minute, the 28-year-old said: “Go and get the winner, that’s all it was!

“No, it just shows we are going to try and play attacking football this year and as a striker that is a delight to see. We worked hard today and we deserved the win.”

The 93rd minute spot kick was won by Maya Yoshida after he was adjudged to have been shoved by Pablo Zabeleta by referee Lee Mason.

Austin was the man tasked with despatching the high-pressure penalty – so were there any nerves?

“I’m professional, I know what I’m doing,” he said, confidently. “Doesn’t matter if it is the first minute or last minute. I have confidence in my ability to take the penalties.

“I knew what I was doing and the ball was only going in one place.”

He added: “I sing in front of the lads, 30 people when I go and do my initiation, that’s more scary than taking a penalty in the last minute.”

The eventful Hammers win also saw rival striker Manolo Gabbiadini net his first goal of the season, scoring Saints’ opener from a narrow angle on 11 minutes.

Austin is relishing the competition with the Italian.

“Every football club has competition and it is only healthy competition,” he said. “He is only going to drive me on to be better and I will hopefully do the same for him.

“I was delighted for him when he scored and he was delighted for me when I scored at the end and that just shows the team spirit we have got this season which is important.

“I don’t think we had it much last year but we are going in the right direction this year definitely.”

The £4m striker concedes that under Claude Puel towards the end of the campaign, the dressing room went markedly quiet.

“At the back end of last year, team spirit just dwindled off a little bit because we weren’t getting the right results. Wins makes big team spirit,” he explained.

“Yeah of course [it went quiet] because wins bring out character and we have got a lot of character, big, big players in our dressing room and that result is definitely going to spur us on,” he added.

Austin: ‘I was playing the best football of my career last season’

Show/hide article…

CHARLIE Austin revealed that he “was playing the best football” of his career before a dislocated shoulder sidelined him for five months of last season.

The 28-year-old had netted nine goals in all competitions before he did the injury in early December at St Mary’s in the costly 1-1 draw with Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the Europa Leauge, which saw Saints eliminated from the competition.

But now Austin is back and raring to go this term under Mauricio Pellegrino.

He said: “I felt fit last year to be honest. I felt strong and I was flying.

“Do you know what? I was playing the best football of my career last year up until I got injured and that was a silly accident when that happened, which is part and parcel of football.

“I feel fit and I feel strong again and now it is about just battling for the team, trying to get involved in the team as much as I can and try and get as many good performances and winners as I can.”

England assistant manager Steve Holland was watching at St Mary’s on Saturday as Saints defeated West Ham 3-2, thanks to Austin’s 93rd minute penalty.

But Austin, who has had one call up to the Three Lions squad – when he was an unused substitute in games against Republic of Ireland and Slovenia in 2015, isn’t thinking about selection to Gareth Southgate’s side.

“That’s in the back of my mind. I just want to stay fit this season, try and score as many goals as I can,” he said. “That’s the main aim for me, and try and help this great football club.

Austin was just pleased to get his first Premier League goal of the season against the Hammers.

“I was delighted of course,” he said. “Every striker wants to get off the mark as soon as possible but the main thing was we showed great character today.

“Although they went down to ten men we showed great character to get the win. That is the main thing. First win of the season and four points from the first two games and we are happy.” ENDS
