WATCH: Southampton 3-2 West Ham

Show/hide article…

Southampton ended their goal drought at St Mary’s and increased 10-man West Ham’s misery with a 3-2 Premier League victory secured by a stoppage-time penalty from Charlie Austin.

Southampton ended their goal drought at St Mary’s and increased 10-man West Ham’s misery with a 3-2 Premier League victory secured by a stoppage-time penalty from Charlie Austin.

An inability to score in their past six home games had contributed to the dismissal of Claude Puel and continued in last week’s 0-0 draw with Swansea in new manager Mauricio Pellegrino’s first match in charge, despite 29 shots on goal.

In West Ham they then found accommodating opposition, whose hopes of recovering from a 4-0 defeat at Manchester United suffered when the reckless Marko Arnautovic was sent off in the first half.

The club-record signing was given a red card in the 33rd minute after he appeared to elbow Jack Stephens when they already trailed to Manolo Gabbiadini’s opening goal.

Austin’s late penalty, following Dusan Tadic’s in the first half, then secured a first league victory of the season for fifth-placed Southampton, who almost drew once again after Javier Hernandez’s two goals took the visitors level.

WATCH: Did Noble scupper Hart?

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin revealed Mark Noble told him which way Joe Hart was going to dive before he took Southampton’s winning penalty but the Hammers’ mind-games failed to pay off.

There was the usual gamesmanship before the striker stepped up to take the spot-kick with Noble having a word in his ear.

It transpired that Noble told Austin which way Hart was going to dive - it was a mind-game that backfired as Austin took the advice on board and slotted the ball the opposite way.

Austin has been directly involved in three goals in his last two Premier League games versus West Ham (two goals, one assist), which comes after he was once criticised by Hammers co-chairman David Sullivan over his fitness.

Win provides mixed emotions for Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Saints still have plenty to work on despite their first win of the season, according to Mauricio Pellegrino.

The Saints manager was delighted to see his side battle out a thrilling 3-2 victory over West Ham at St Mary’s, but was also concerned by elements of their play that led to them being twice breached by a side reduced to ten men.

Pellegrino admitted there was a sense of mixed emotions at the final whistle.

“Obviously but we have to think about that physically maybe they are stronger than us and they were playing this type of game with free kicks, long free kicks, deep free kicks,” he reflected.

“The majority of the problems for us were in this type of moment.

“In the second half the first ten-15 minutes we could have scored the third goal and maybe history is other but we have to keep going and keep learning and it’s easier when you are winning the game.”

West Ham certainly looked a tougher prospect once they went down to ten and Pellegrino added: “This is something I think after the second goal we were a little bit relaxed but not in terms of concentration but in terms of trying to be more clinical to score the third one and try to kill the game.

“When you give the opportunity to the opponent to have some opportunities like today you will be in trouble and this is something we have to improve.”

Pellegrino was happy to see his side get the better of the decisions from referee Lee Mason, who sent off Marko Arnautovic, awarded Saints two penalties and incensed Wets Ham by not punishing Mario Lemina and turning down a handball appeal against Jack Stephens.

“I haven’t seen the replay and sometimes when the referee makes a decision you have to respect when they are for you you are happy in this case, when it’s against you have to suffer and to keep going,” said Pellegrino.

“From the bench I haven’t seen well both decisions.”

Pellegrino handed Mario Lemina a debut and said: “I decide to play with Mario and Oriol and in front with Steve Davis because I imagine they will play a lot of long balls in this situation.

“I think we did well in the first half but we have to keep going for Mario it wasn’t easy to play a first game after a lot of time without playing.”

Saints got the game won in stoppage time after Pellegrino threw on both Shane Long and Charlie Austin.

“They are players with capacity to move and try to find space,” admitted Pellegrino.

“I tell them that Charlie maybe play a little bit behind Shane because Shane runs behind and is quicker and Charlie needs to be close to the goal to receive crosses from wide areas and to stay there.

“I was sure that we will create some chances.”

Chelsea plot £200m spending spree: Conte wants Van Dijk, Ox, Drinkwater, Soares, Bertrand

Show/hide article…

Antonio Conte enjoyed an impressive first season in English football, winning the Premier League and reaching the FA Cup final.

But he’s in no mood to rest on his laurels and has already splashed out more than £140m on Alvaro Morata, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Antonio Rudiger.

Chelsea have been linked with a whole host of top talent in the wake of their shock opening weekend defeat to Burnley.

And the latest reports suggest Conte is keen for Blues owner Roman Abramovich to get the cheque book out as deadline day approaches.

WATCH: Chicarito double in vain

Show/hide article…

Javier Hernandez scored a double for West Ham but it proved in vain as Southampton nicked victory.

The striker was scoring his first Premier League goals since April 2014 (1232 days ago).

Amazingly, all 39 of his goals in the English top-flight have come inside the box. Indeed, only Tim Cahill (56) and John Terry (41) and have scored more Premier League goals without ever netting one from outside the box than Hernandez.

The striker didn’t deserve to be on the losing side as this looks £16m well spent already.

Despite playing the majority of the game with 10-men, the Hammers made the most of their limited territory with Hernandez finishing the only two chances that came his way - both from inside the six-yard box. His all-round game was also of top quality, including when mucking in as a makeshift left-winger.

It’s good to have him back in the Premier League.

Watch the above video to see Hernandez at his poaching best.
