Southampton 3-2 West Ham - are you in our fan pics?

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men looked as though they had thrown the game away when West Ham levelled on 74 minutes through Hernandez’s well-taken poach at the back post.

But when Pablo Zabeleta was adjudged to have fouled Maya Yoshida in added time, Saints were handed a lifeline, which Austin gladly took, converting the resulting penalty kick.

Manolo Gabbiadini opened the scoring on 11 minutes before Marko Arnautovic was sent off on 33 minutes, giving Saints a man advantage.

Dusan Tadic then doubled the hosts lead from the spot after Jose Fonte fouled Steven Davis on 38 minutes.

Hernandez then levelled with his first poachers finish, as Fraser Forster parried Michail Antonio’s effort in to his path.

Slaven Bilic refused to criticise referee despite controversial calls in Souathampton defeat

Show/hide article…

Slaven Bilic wouldn’t be drawn on referee Lee Mason’s performance after West Ham’s controversial defeat at Southampton.

The Saints ended their goal drought at St Mary’s and increased 10-man West Ham’s misery with a 3-2 Premier League victory secured by a stoppage-time penalty from Charlie Austin.

Mason sent-off Marko Arnautovic in the first-half after the Austrian elbowed Jack Stephens and then awarded a penalty for Jose Fonte’s foul on Steven Davis, from which Dusan Tadic scored. A double from Javier Hernandez, either side of half-time, drew the visitors level but Mason awarded a dubious late penalty for a foul by Pablo Zabaleta.

“I don’t want to talk about the penalty decisions, because there is no point talking about it,” Bilic said.

"I only want to say that I’m very proud of my team and they showed everything I said - commitment, quality, character, team spirit and we never gave up.

"I don’t want to talk about the red card, either. I am the manager and I want to talk about the game and the decisions are going to lead to someone else talking about it. Of course the player is disappointed, but I am going to talk about the quality of the game and not about the decisions.

“It’s very hard to play with 10 men, especially as we were already one goal down. We then conceded a second goal and it was difficult to come back. On paper it was very difficult to keep it to 2-0, but we showed character and commitment and that we are fit enough to do it for each other.”

Despite the defeat, there were plenty of positives for Bilic to take, including the performance of Hernandez, who joined for £16million from Bayer Leverkusen earlier this month.

The striker took both his goals nicely and put in a huge amount of work when asked to fill in on the left wing when the Hammers were defending with 10-men.

“He is a goalscorer but if we’re also talking about him we must also talk about the second half, when we asked him to play on the wing because we needed to use his legs,” Bilic said.

“We had to have two banks of four and sometimes defend with six when they attacked with their full-backs, so we have to praise him not only for his goals but also for his great attitude and great defensive work.”

Match of the Day running order: Gameweek 2

Show/hide article…

West Ham fans can relive their rollercoaster clash against Southampton tonight with Javier Hernandez’s debut goals for the Hammers up first on Match of the Day.

Charlie Austin’s stoppage-time penalty sealed Southampton’s 3-2 win over 10-man Hammers at St Mary’s after Marko Arnautovic’s red card.

Hernandez poached his first two Hammers goals to level the scores after the Saints went 2-0 ahead, but Pablo Zabaleta fouled Maya Yoshida at the death and Austin dispatched Saints’ second spot-kick of the match, to seal the spoils.

Manchester United thumped Swansea at the Liberty Stadium for their second straight 4-0 win of the new season.

Eric Bailly’s first goal for the Red Devils handed Jose Mourinho’s men a 1-0 lead at half-time, before three strikes in four minutes at the death wrapped up another commanding win.

United opened their campaign with a 4-0 home drubbing of West Ham, and repeated the scoreline in Wales, with Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial all on target in a late flurry.

Arsenal boasted 77 per cent possession and mustered 18 attempts on goal but still lost 1-0 at Stoke.

Paris Saint-Germain loan signing Jese Rodriguez claimed the winner with a clinical finish after Saido Berahino’s through ball.

Alexandre Lacazette had the ball in the back of the net midway through the second half, only for the strike to be ruled out for offside.

Hal Robson-Kanu claimed the winning goal but was later sent off as 10-man West Brom edged home 1-0 at Burnley.

Shinji Okazaki and Harry Maguire found the net for Leicester’s 2-0 home win over promoted Brighton, whose wait to get off the Premier League mark continues.

Brazilian striker Richarlison struck his first Premier League goal as Watford ground past Bournemouth 2-0 at Dean Court.

The summer signing from Fluminense converted Andre Gray’s cross for Watford’s first goal, before Etienne Capoue sealed the Hornets’ win with a late 25-yard strike.

Sadio Mane cut through home frustrations at Anfield to fire Liverpool to a patchy 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, as Jurgen Klopp’s men secured their first victory of the league campaign.

Palace remain winless and pointless from their opening two clashes under new boss Frank de Boer.

Mauricio Pellegrino says he respects calls made by Lee Mason in win over West Ham

Mauricio Pellegrino said he respected referee Lee Mason’s decisions in their controversial 3-2 victory over West Ham.

The Saints ended their goal drought at St Mary’s and increased 10-man West Ham’s misery with a victory secured by a stoppage-time penalty from Charlie Austin.

Saints were the beneficiary of some dubious calls from Mason, who sent-off Marko Arnautovic in the first-half after the Austrian elbowed Jack Stephens and then awarded a penalty for Jose Fonte’s foul on Steven Davis, from which Dusan Tadic - who could have been sent-off himself for a wild tackle on Javier Hernandez - scored.

A double from Hernandez, either side of half-time, drew the visitors level but Mason awarded a debatable late penalty for a foul by Pablo Zabaleta.

“I haven’t seen the replay [of the key decisions] and sometimes when the referee makes a decision you have to respect them,” said Pellegrino

“When they are for you you are happy; when it’s against you have to suffer and to keep going.”

Despite the victory, Southampton struggled for long periods of the second-half against the 10-man Hammers.

Pellegrino admitted that they under-performed at times and must improve at dealing with the physicality of opposition teams.

“Maybe they are stronger than us and they were playing this type of game with free-kicks, long free-kicks, deep free-kicks,” said Pellegrino.

"The majority of the problems for us were in this type of moment.

"After the second goal we were a little bit relaxed but not in terms of concentration, in terms of trying to be more clinical to score the third one and try to kill the game.

“When you give the opponent some opportunities like today you will be in trouble and this is something we have to improve.”

Virgil Van Dijk: Liverpool target eyed by Juventus - Southampton desperate to keep star

Show/hide article…

That’s according to Gazzetta dello Sport, who claim the Serie A giants have their eye on the Dutchman as the transfer deadline approaches.

Van Dijk has emerged as one of the world’s most coveted defenders since joining Southampton from Celtic two years ago.

And Jurgen Klopp is keen to get him on-board this summer as he bolsters his defence ahead of the Reds’ Champions League return.

Liverpool were forced to take a step back from the hunt for Van Dijk’s signature in June when they were accused of tapping him up.

Marko Arnautovic apologises to West Ham fans for his sending off

Show/hide article…

Marko Arnautovic issued a grovelling apology to West Ham supporters on Saturday night after he was sent off for a brutal elbow on Jack Stephens.

The Hammers were forced to play the majority of Saturday’s defeat to Southampton with 10 men after Arnautovic - the club’s record signing - was shown a straight red card for a horrific elbow on Stephens.

During the game, the Austrian pleaded his innocence but the £20million man quickly realised his mistake.

And on his Instagram page, the 28-year-old posted: 'I want to apologise to all the West Ham fans.

‘Just want to let you know I didn’t want to let my team down and you fans. So please, sorry. A big apology to all of you.’

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic - who refused to comment on the sending off and the controversial injury time penalty that cost his side a point - also confirmed Arnautovic also apologised to his team-mates in the dressing room.

Javier Hernandez scored his first two goals for the club as 10-man West Ham pulled themselves level after going 2-0 down to a strike from Manolo Gabbiadini and Dusan Tadic’s penalty.

But Southampton netted a late winner, again from the penalty spot, when Charlie Austin fired home a spot-kick in the 93rd minute to consign West Ham to their second defeat of the season.
