West Ham analysis: Four things we learned in Saints loss - Hernandez, discipline, Ogbonna

Show/hide article…

Angelo Ogbonna certainly had a game to forget.

The Italy international looked spooked by his late selection after Winston Reid pre-match injury.

West Ham’s star defender, having signed a new long-term contract yesterday, was stretchered off in the warm-up with a calf problem.

His replacement, Ogbonna, was at fault for Southampton’s second as he pulled down Steven Davis for the penalty.

And numerous times he made rash decisions with clearances, tackles and dawdling on the ball.

Jose Fonte, on his return to St Mary’s, fared little better either.

Discipline is an issue for Slaven Bilic’s men.

West Ham caved in at the end of the 4-0 Manchester United defeat.

And record signing Marko Arnautovic’s petulant elbow on Jack Stephens was ridiculous, dumb, and he won’t get away with a suspension.

Experienced Portugal international Jose Fonte’s tug back for Southampton’s penalty was also needless.

Pablo Zabaleta’s push in the back in the final minute summed the problem up.

West Ham key man carried off on stretcher during warm-up

Show/hide article…

West Ham lost defender Winston Reid to injury in the warm-up ahead of their clash with Southampton.

Slaven Bilic’s men endured a woeful start to the season as they were thrashed 4-0 at Manchester United last week.

The Hammers boss will have been after a response from his side but his cause was not helped by the loss of Reid.

The defender pulled up before kick off at St Mary’s clutching his calf and had to be carried off on a stretcher.

Angelo Ogbonna was drafted in but West Ham’s afternoon got even worse after just 11 minutes.

Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini raced onto Nathan Redmond’s though ball before slotting past Joe Hart.

West Ham’s cause wasn’t helped by the loss of summer signing Marko Arnautovic, who was sent off after appearing to catch Jack Stephens late with an arm.

Dusan Tadic compounded Bilic’s woes from the penalty spot just minutes later but Javier Hernandez gave the visitors hope before the break.

He added a second after half-time but there was late heartbreak for the Hammers as Charlie Austin scored from the spot in added time.

Reid’s injury comes just days after he ended speculation over his future by signing a new six-year deal.

Bilic is already without Andy Carroll, Manuel Lanzini and Cheikhou Kouyate but the trio should return to action before the end of the month.

Southampton 3-2 West Ham: Austin strikes as Arnautovic sees red

Show/hide article…

Two penalties, a red card, a stunning comeback and an injury time winner. The Premier League is back everyone.

Slaven Bilic won’t take solace from it, but his team deserve huge credit for their contribution to this breathless football match, particularly after they were forced to play the majority of the game with 10 men after Marko Arnautovic’s brainless sending off.

In the end Charlie Austin came off the bench to score a last gasp penalty to seal the first three points of Mauricio Pellegrino’s reign.

But that was just the icing on the cake of this super-duper 90 minutes of entertainment.

Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez re-introduced himself to English football with two trademark finishes to drag his team level after Manolo Gabbiadini and Dusan Tadic fired the hosts into a two-goal lead.

Ultimately, referee Lee Mason’s decision to award Southampton a soft looking penalty in the 91st minute provided this game’s decisive moment.

Pellegrino will feel justice was served, his team dominating for large parts; Bilic won’t feel the same satisfaction, though.

Two games, two defeats - not the start Bilic - or his bosses - would have hoped for.

For Pellegrino, it’s an unbeaten beginning to his career as a Premier League manager.

The way Southampton let West Ham back into the game will certainly worry the newly-appointed Saints boss. But for now the signs are promising.

However, the Hammers boss was forced to change his starting XI before the game had even started as Winston Reid - fresh from signing a new six-year contract - left the field on a stretcher during the warm-up after sustaining a calf problem. Angelo Ogbonna replaced him in the starting XI.

Arnautovic and Michail Antonio - who impressed in front of England assistant manager Steve Holland - missed two early chances for West Ham before Southampton took an 11th minute lead through Gabbiadini.

Set up expertly by Nathan Redmond, the Italian accurately fired across Joe Hart to score the first goal of Pellegrino’s reign.

The way Jose Fonte and Ogbonna allowed Gabbiadini to ghost into the box unmarked was unforgivable.

Bilic certainly wouldn’t have been in a hurry to excuse his defenders of blame.

Nor will he be rushing to rally round Arnautovic after his nonsensical elbow on Jack Stephens in the 33rd minute.

The perplexed look on the forward’s face wasn’t fooling anyone, least of all referee Mason, who couldn’t pull out his red card quick enough.

Arnautovic knows what he did: a pointless and malicious act of violence.

And within five minutes his team paid the ultimate consequence as they fell two behind.

Redmond, patrolling the area Arnautovic would have been guarding, found Steven Davis in the box with an incisive pass.

Having failed to deal with the first ball, Fonte felt he had no option but to pull the Northern Irish midfielder back. Mason had no option but to point to the spot.

Hart got a flailing leg to Tadic’s spot-kick but that wasn’t enough to prevent the Saints from taking a 2-0 lead.

Ten men and a two goal deficit; it wasn’t looking good for the Hammers.

But out of nowhere they grabbed a lifeline before the break, Hernandez tapping home after Antonio’s long range effort was saved by Fraser Forster to score his first goal since his £16million arrival.

Despite they numerical disadvantage the Hammers had given themselves a fighting chance.

They rode their luck of course; Gabbiadini hit the bar with vicious long-ranger on the hour.

But 14 minutes later West Ham levelled. Again Hernandez was on hand to pick the pieces after Forster had produced a point blank save from Diafra Sakho.

Pellegrino was left scratching his head; 2-0 up, playing against 10 men - how did this happen? Welcome to the Premier League, Mauricio.

But in the end Pellegrino was smiling thanks to Mason’s intervention.

Maya Yoshida’s appeal as Pablo Zabaleta leant into him was tame, but it was enough for Mason to award Southampton an injury time penalty.

Zabaleta and his team-mates were confused. When West Ham players see the replays, they’ll feel cheated. Penalty decisions don’t come much softer.

Not that Austin cared a jot as he stepped up to break Hammers hearts.

Southampton 3-2 West Ham: Charlie Austin penalty settles thriller

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin came off the bench to fire Mauricio Pellegrino to a dramatic first win as Southampton boss.

Austin showed nerves of steel to win a five-goal thriller against ten-man West Ham with a cooly converted injury-time penalty.

Pablo Zabaleta’s push on Maya Yoshida to concede the spot-kick undid all the Hammers’ hard work to come back from 2-0 down thanks to Javier Hernandez’s double.

And the last-gasp nature of the defeat capped another nightmare afternoon for the visitors and boss Slaven Bilic.

Their first blow came in the warm-up when Winston Reid picked up a calf injury and had to be replaced in the starting XI by Angelo Ogbonna.

And things quickly went from bad to worse when Manolo Gabbiadini crept in behind returning former Saints defender Jose Fonte to fire past Joe Hart.

It was Southampton’s first goal at home for 556 minutes and over six games.

West Ham suffered another setback when Marko Arnautovic was sent off for a late forearm challenge on Jack Stephens just after the half hour.

And then Dusan Tadic poured salt in their wounds by scoring their first penalty of the match after Fonte hauled back Steven Davis.

On the stroke of half time, West Ham gave themselves a glimmer of hope.

Hernandez reacted quickest after Fraser Forster could only parry Michail Antonio’s shot and tapped in his first West Ham goal.

And he was first to pounce on the loose ball again in the 74 minute when Forster deflected sub Diafra Sakho’s header on to the bar to make it 2-2.

But the drama wasn’t over and Austin had the final say with seconds to spare.

Report: Saints 3-2 West Ham

Show/hide article…

Saints flew to a two-goal lead in the first half thanks to a left-footed strike from Manolo Gabbiadini and penalty from Dušan Tadić, but the visitors fought back.

Javier Hernandez netted either side of the break to bring West Ham level, but Saints were awarded a penalty with just minutes to play, which Austin converted to seal all three points.

Mauricio Pellegrino handed new recruit Mario Lemina his first start for the visit of West Ham to St Mary’s, with James Ward-Prowse making way as the only change from the opening day draw with Swansea City.

The visitors created the first real chance of the afternoon. Former Saints loanee Michail Antonio found Marko Arnautović darting across the right side of the penalty area, but the summer signing struck his low drive wide of Fraser Forster’s near post.

Minutes later Saints found the opener. Nathan Redmond freed Gabbiadini down the left flank and the Italian broke into the West Ham penalty area to curl a left-footed effort past Joe Hart and into the far corner.

Pellegrino’s men were much-deserving of their lead, however the visitors continued to create chances on the counter and Forster had to be alert to palm a close-range header at his near post to safety.

A crucial moment in the match then followed just after the half-hour mark, as Arnautović was given his marching orders by Lee Mason for an off-the-ball elbow into the face of Jack Stephens.

It soon went from bad to worse for the Hammers. On 37 minutes Steven Davis turned José Fonte on the edge of the penalty area and was then dragged back by the Portuguese defender.

Referee Mason rightly pointed to the spot, leaving Tadić to dispatch the resulting penalty straight down the middle and double Saints’ advantage.

Despite the scoreline, the visitors were not ready to give up and managed to fashion a way back into the match just before the break.

Antonio swivelled on the edge of the Saints area and quickly struck at goal. And although Forster was able to parry the initial shot, Hernandez pounced to ram home the rebound and pull one back just before the interval.

Soon after the restart Saints came within inches of re-establishing their two-goal lead. A short corner found its way back out to Davis on the left of the area, and his curling cross dropped just wide of Hart’s far post.

A similar cross-come-shot then almost troubled Forster at the other end. This time it was Hernandez who worked the space and struck towards goal, but the Saints ‘keeper was quick to dive to his left and push the ball away.

Gabbiadini then almost doubled his personal tally before the hour mark with a superb long-range effort. Finding himself in plenty of space, the Italian unleashed a fierce left-footed strike from 30 yards, only to be denied by the crossbar.

Pellegrino moved to make his first change of the afternoon shortly after, as Ward-Prowse entered the fray in place of Lemina.

West Ham then found a leveller on 73 minutes. Forster did superbly well to tip Diafra Sakho’s close-range header onto the crossbar, however Hernandez was once against first to pounce inside the penalty area and fired in the rebound to pull the scores level.

Saints responded immediately. Redmond cut inside and struck a low drive into the side-netting before Pellegrino then introduced Charlie Austin and Shane Long in place of Gabbiadini and Davis.

With three minutes remaining Saints had the ball in the back of the net. Cedrić cut a cross back from the right byline which was half-cleared and then headed in by Long, however the goal was ruled out for a foul on West Ham ‘keeper Hart.

Pellegrino’s men continued to create chances and were inches away from taking a late lead. Redmond smacked a 25-yard effort at goal and it deflected off a West Ham body before rattling the crossbar and falling behind.

Saints were then awarded a late penalty with just minutes remaining. Maya Yoshida was hauled down in the penalty area by Pablo Zabaleta and referee Mason once again pointed to the spot.

This time it was substitute Austin who stepped up and the outcome never really looked in doubt as he confidently sent Hart the wrong way and netted to earn Saints their first Premier League win of the season.

West Ham pay the penalty for Noble’s mind games

Show/hide article…

West Ham saw a first point of the season snatched from under their nose as Charlie Austin converted a last minute penalty to take all three points in a dramatic encounter at St. Mary’s.

And it seems he was helped by Hammers captain, Mark Noble.

Speaking after the game Austin, who sent summer signing Joe Hart the wrong way to score the winner after Pablo Zabaleta had fouled Maya Yoshida, revealed that Noble had tried to unsettle him in the build-up, and failed with his mind games.

"I was going to his right for the penalty, but then Noble said ‘Hart knows where you are going’, so I put it into the other side,” Austin told reporters.

Slaven Bilic would have been more than happy with a point, having come back from 2-0 down with ten men, thanks to a first-half sending off for Marko Arnautovic, but leaves with nothing from his first two games of the season despite a brace from fellow summer arrival Javier Hernandez.

It will be even more gutting that the winner was scored by Austin considering that, having been linked with the former QPR man before his switch to Saints, West Ham co-owner David Sullivan suggested he had ‘no ligaments in his knee’ when speaking to Hammers podcast Knees up Mother Brown.

Charlie Austin penalty secures Saints victory as Marko Arnautovic red costs West Ham

Show/hide article…

This was a tale of two natural finishers. Charlie Austin’s late penalty gave Southampton victory after ten-man West Ham had come back from 2-0 down to level with two goals from Javier Hernandez.

The Mexico and former Manchester United striker showed why West Ham paid Bayer Leverkusen £16m for his signature last month with two opportunist efforts as the ten-man Hammers seemed to have snatched an improbable point. But another penalty-box predator, Austin, had the final word.

In the end, West Ham proved to be the perfect antidote to Southampton’s goal drought at St Mary’s. Saints had not scored in seven home games until poor marking allowed Manolo Gabbiadini put them ahead after eleven minutes, and Dusan Tadic made it 2-0 from a penalty after 38 minutes. By then the Hammers were down to ten men after Marko Arnautovic had been sent off for a foul on Jack Stephens.

The afternoon began badly for West Ham when defender Winston Reid left the field on a stretcher during the pre-match warm-up, but after nine minutes the Londoners came close to the opening goal when Michail Antonio found Arnautovic, whose shot sped just the wrong side of the near post.

But a minute later Southampton were ahead with a mirror image of the Hammers’ move. Nathan Redmond was given all the time he wanted on the left to play the ball forward to Gabbiadini and he shot across Joe Hart and in with former Saints captain Jose Fonte far too slow to cover. It was the first time the home side had hit the net here for 587 minutes.

West Ham needed to reply, and after 22 minutes Arnautovic dived to nod Javier Hernandez’ near-post cross goalwards, forcing a one-handed save from Fraser Forster.

Saints started Mario Lemina, their £18.1m record signing, from Juventus, and his first impact on the game came when his elbow caught Arnautovic on the side of the head as they challenged for a bouncing ball. The ferocity of Mark Noble’s subsequent tackle on the Gabon midfield player suggested that the West Ham captain had been none too impressed with Lemina’s challenge on Arnautovic.

Perhaps Arnautovic was in the mood to take revenge for the injury, which had required treatment. That may explain, although not justify, what happened next. As Jack Stephens passed the ball out of defence, Arnautovic charged into him from the side, his elbow catching the defender in the neck. It was a clear red card however much the Austrian protested his bewilderment at the decision.

That was after 33 minutes and West Ham were 2-0 down five minutes later. Steven Davis collected a pass from and turned past Fonte and Ogbonna and into the penalty area. Fonte grabbed Davis’s arm, Ogbonna his neck, and referee Mason pointed to the penalty spot. Dusan Tadic’s penalty was poor and would have hit Joe Hart’s knees if he had not moved. As it was, Hart got a trailing leg to the ball, but could not keep it out.

West Ham might have collapsed at that point but instead they rallied and Hernandez showed the predatory instincts for which he was signed, shooting under the body of Fraser Forster after the goalkeeper had only been able to turn aside an effort from Antonio, who had turned past Oriol Romeu and shot low and hard with his left foot.

Andre Ayew and all the travelling fans appealed for a penalty after Ayew’s header rebounded from Stephens’ arm in the 54th minute. They were frustrated then but celebrating after 74 minutes as Hernandez pounced again, smacking the rebound home after Diafra Sakho’s header from Aaron Cresswell’s cross had come back off Forster and the woodwork.

Nathan Redmond’s deflected shot hit the bar as Saints went for a winner that seemed destined not to come until Pablo Zabaleta was ruled to have pushed Maya Yoshida as he went for James Ward-Prowse’s cross. Austin rolled the penalty into the corner as Hart dived the wrong way, and no-one in the ground had expected anything different.

Southampton 3-2 West Ham: Austin nets late winner to down ten man Hammers

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin handed Saints a dramatic injury time win over ten man West Ham as Saints finally ended their St Mary’s goal drought.

Manolo Gabbiadini ended a run of 556 Premier League minutes without a Saints goal at St Mary’s to give his side the lead before Marko Arnautovic was sent off for a crazy elbow on Jack Stephens.

Saints looked to have the three points in the bag when Dusan Tadic scored from the penalty spot but they almost let it slip with Javier Hernandez scoring twice.

However, referee Lee Mason handed Saints a second spot kick in stoppage time which Austin converted to secure a 3-2 win and a first Premier League victory for Mauricio Pellegrino.

There was an early scare for Saints as Javier Hernandez held off Jack Stephens and closed in on goal but Maya Yoshida didn’t commit early and was on hand to make a vital tackle as the Hammers striker tried to break into the area.

It was an interesting tactical battle as both teams started out unwilling to overcommit.

Saints were sat very deep and keeping possession around their backline, almost as if to invite West Ham on in a bid to draw them out, but the Hammers were staying disciplined.

West Ham did get a sight of goal on nine minutes as Michail Antonio laid a pass round the outside to Mark Arnautovic. He tried to shoot first time to prevent the angle getting too tight but drilled his effort well wide of the near post.

Moments later Antonio got on the end of a left wing free kick but could only direct his header straight at Fraser Forster.

Saints went grateful as they went straight up the other end on 11 minutes and finally broke their goal drought.

Nathan Redmond played in Manolo Gabbiadini who struck a first time shot across goal. He didn’t get it cleanly but it was directed well enough that Joe Hart couldn’t get to it diving to his left and it was 1-0.

Dusan Tadic became the first player on the book after a very robust challenge on Hernandez.

Antonio got another header on target on 19 minutes but there was much on it and again it was easy for Forster.

Redmond tried an effort from distance up the other end but could only pick out Hart.

Forster had a more taxing save to make a couple of minutes later as Hernandez whipped in a low cross from the right which Arnautovic stooped to head goalwards but the Saints keeper stood tall and deflected it wide off his body.

West Ham were furious that referee Lee Mason took no action when Mario Lemina caught Arnautovic in the face with his leading arm as he jumped into a contest for the ball.

Saints were given a massive boost on 33 minutes when Arnautovic, clearly still seething even though the game had rattled on, retaliated and was sent off.

Jack Stephens was passing the ball out of defence when Arnautovic sprinted from behind to catch him senselessly with an elbow to the side of the face.

Mason had no hesitation in immediately brandishing the red card and there were few arguments, even if he was still clearly incensed that Lemina was let off earlier in the game.

It went from bad to worse for the Hammers as they continued to lose their discipline to give away a penalty.

Of all the people to concede it, it was former Saints star Jose Fonte, who hauled back Davis in the area.

Tadic stepped up to take it and got a massive stroke of luck. He put it down the middle without all that much power. It struck Hart’s legs and looped up but into the net.

Saints sensed the chance to put the game totally out of sight before half time and came close again as Davis fired wide.

However, they let the Hammers back into it just before half time.

Antonio heled off Oriol Romeu and spun to shoot from just outside the box. Forster got down to his left to make the save but Hernandez was alive to the danger and arrived to the follow-up first and sidefooted home.

Cedric Soares sliced wildly over the bar at the far post before an eventful half was brought to a close.

Cedric had the first real opening of the second period too as some great Saints football on the counter attack ended with the right back played in and shooting wide.

Forster decided he needed to take drastic action and turn wide as Hernandez whipped in an inswinging cross from the left.

Mason made himself more unpopular with West Ham as he turned down massive appeals for a penalty on 53 minutes.

Andrew Ayew’s header towards goal was blocked by the raised left arm of Stephens. It did look a penalty even though it was from fairly close range but Mason gave the benefit of the doubt, though he may have been unsighted by a crowd of players.

Saints really needed to step it up. They were facing a different prospect as West Ham had switched to 4-4-1 with Antonio up front to try and use his pace in behind and Hernandez dropping out wide.

Gabbiadini tried to make something happen with an audacious drive from 25 yards out that clipped the top of the bar.

Hernandez had his own go from distance up the other end but fired narrowly wide before Tadic tried to be more positive and forced Hart to save at his near post.

Saints made a first change on 65 minutes with James Ward-Prowse replacing Lemina.

West Ham responded with Diafra Sakho and Edimilson Fernandes coming on for Antonio and Ayew.

It did the trick as well as West Ham levelled things up on 74 minutes.

Richard Cresswell whipped in a cross from the left that picked out the head of Sakho. He had got ahead of Maya Yoshida and powered in a shot that Forster reacted superbly to get an arm to and turn onto the underside of the bar.

It was again Hernandez who reacted quickest and produced a superb first time finish to equalise.

Saints made a double change with ten minutes remaining with Charlie Austin and Shane Long replacing Gabbiadini and Davis.

Long got the ball in the back of net on 87 minutes but it was ruled out for a foul by Ryan Bertrand on Hart.

Redmond’s deflected effort skimmed the top of the bar as Saints pushed for a winner before Mason intervened again, awarding a soft stoppage time penalty for a nudge in the back of Yoshida by Pablo Zabaleta.

Austin was the man handed the responsibility this time and sent Hart the wrong way to seal the win.

Southampton 3-2 West Ham: Pellegrino hails crucial day

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino believes his side’s goal spree against West Ham is just the tonic they need to start afresh this season.

Saints finally ended their home goal drought as Manolo Gabbiadini ended 556 minutes of barren football at St Mary’s to give his team the lead at St Mary’s.

Saints ended up netting three as they secured a pulsating 3-2 victory which looked to be beyond them as the game moved into stoppage time with ten man West Ham having clawed their way back from two down to 2-2.

Charlie Austin netted from the penalty spot – a second spot kick of the day after Dusan Tadic also converted – and Pellegrino was certain it was a crucial afternoon.

He said: “I am really happy but not just about the players.

“It is important in our context as Southampton as a team but for the strikers to score goals is always important. Charlie, Dusan and Manolo it is good news and not just for them but for everybody.”

It was a reward for hard work for Saints, who spent a lot of time on the training ground working on being more clinical in the final third, and Pellegrino added: “Some time you cannot control this type of situation.

“I will repeat that we can work in different ways in how we want to approach the attack, how we want to play with the ball, but to have this accuracy to score goals in something that sometimes depends on to be in good moments, sometimes to be precise.”

It was certainly an up and down game against the Hammers, and there certainly could be no complaints about boring football such as though levelled against Pellegrino’s predecessor Claude Puel.

“A difficult game to be a manager and a nice game to be a fan,” surmised a smiling Pellegrino.

“It was unpredictable until the end and suddenly it changed the dynamic twice - once for them and another for us.

“This is the Premier League and when you can’t control some situations like long ball or second ball in aerial play they create some problems.

“Every single long ball in the 18 yard box is something we have to improve but we won the game really difficult and this is the good news for us.”

Pellegrino pleased by dramatic victory

Show/hide article…

Saints were pegged back by the ten-man Hammers after taking a 2-0 lead, but Charlie Austin’s late penalty sealed all three points.

“I’m really pleased because we got the three points from a difficult game. It was a difficult game to be a manager but a nice game to be a fan!,” said Pellegrino.

“After the second goal, we couldn’t control some situations like the long balls and the second balls in our box.

“In the challenge I think they were better than us, but in the Premier League every single team has the quality to create problems. It’s better to learn and grow after winning.”

Austin: That’s a big win for us

Show/hide article…

The striker converted from the spot in stoppage time to earn all three points, having replaced Manolo Gabbiadni with just ten minutes remaining.

“It’s great to get the first win of the season and come on and play a part,” started Austin.

“The lads worked so hard for the result but we threw away a two-goal lead, really. I’ve got to be honest, I think we got out of jail.

“It’s always tough when you come up against ten men because they have nothing to lose and just go for it, but let’s look at us: we’ve come away with three points and it is a big win for us, really.”

The defining moment of the game came in the final minutes when Maya Yoshida was fouled inside the penalty area by Pablo Zabaleta.

And although the visitors protested after Lee Mason pointed to the spot, Austin admitted that the most important thing was to ensure victory for Saints.

“Whether it was a penalty or not, I don’t know,” continued the striker.

“I am delighted it went for us but I think if went against us, it’s a harsh one. But that doesn’t matter for us, it’s three points and we move on now to Huddersfield.

“It was great to be able to get three goals because I think that was what we were lacking a bit at the end of last year. But at the end of the day, the three points is what’s important.”
