Ward-Prowse: Europe is still the ambition for Saints

Show/hide article…

SAINTS still harbour ambitions of playing European football next season.

Despite starting this weekend’s Premier League round in 10th place, and some way off a potential Europa League berth, there is still belief that Saints can make a late break for continental competition positions with 12 games left.

“Anything is possible,” said James Ward-Prowse.

"We’ve seen that the last few years, we can’t look too far ahead or too far behind.

"We have to just focus on each game as it comes.

“We’ve just got to make sure we’re ready for the fight and give us the best chance to succeed.”

Saints have played Europa League football in consecutive campaigns, but it looks increasingly unlikely they’ll make it three in a row.

This term they narrowly missed out of qualification from the group stages in excruciating fashion and did something similar the season before last but in the play-off round.

Ward-Prowse stated that Saints are set-up as a club to give it another go.

“That’s the ambition of the players,” he said.

"We’ve got the players and the squad and the manager to play European football.

“We all want to get back to that stage and we won’t give up until the final whistle of the season to give ourselves the best chance of being the in Europa League draw again.”

The 22-year-old midfielder hopes to continue to be at the heart of Saints’ resurgence, which has seen them record back-to-back Premier League triumphs after a difficult start to 2017.

The academy graduate, who is celebrating a first call-up to the England senior team, has been a key part in Claude Puel’s side of late.

Ward-Prowse, who has previously struggled to nail down a starting role, has been playing in the attacking three just behind Manolo Gabbiadini in the reinstated 4-2-3-1 and he admits he’s growing in confidence the more he plays.

“Any role in team is a lot easier if you get a good run of games,” he said.

"That’s something I’ve had this year unlike any other year and that’s given me the confidence to grow and learn more about my position.

"I feel very a much a set part within the team.

“I’m growing in confidence in every game and that’s only a positive.”

He added: "It’s a position I’ve grown into the last few weeks and whether the manager puts me there or in the middle then that’s up to him.

“But I certainly enjoy playing there and it’s given me a chance to get forward and create a few more opportunities and into goal-scoring positions.”

Manolo Gabbiadini: Southampton won’t dwell on EFL Cup final loss

Show/hide article…

Southampton are over the pain of losing the EFL Cup final as they prepare to face Tottenham Hotspur on Super Sunday, according to their record signing Manolo Gabbiadini.

The Saints were beaten 3-2 by Manchester United at Wembley last month, with Gabbiadini denied a hat-trick in the showpiece encounter after having a ‘goal’ wrongly ruled out for offside.

However, the striker does not want to dwell on that incident, preferring instead to focus on the remainder of the season with his new club, starting with Sunday’s clash with high-flying Tottenham at White Hart Lane, live on Sky Sports.

“We have regrets because we could have won and we didn’t,” said Gabbiadini in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports.

"But I have mixed feelings, positive and negative, because it was nice but, at the same time, bad because we could have won and we wanted to win.

"If the first ‘goal’ hadn’t been disallowed, we would have been 1-0 up, we would have been winning 1-0 and the whole game would have changed.

“So we have regrets, but here in England, you don’t think about this. The game was three weeks ago, the referee decided to rule out the goal, so, what’s done is done! I don’t want to think about the disallowed goal.”

Gabbiadini swapped Napoli for the Saints in the January transfer window in a deal that cost the Premier League club an initial £14.5m, plus £2.5m in add-ons.

However, the forward has taken no time at all to settle in at St Mary’s, scoring an impressive six times already in just four games in all competitions.

And the Italy international, who does not speak much English, says he prefers to do his talking on the pitch after his impressive start to his career on the south coast.

“I don’t really like to talk about myself, so I prefer to let what I do on the pitch speak for itself,” said Gabbiadini.

“For now, you’ve only seen four games and there will be more, so I’ll let you decide and judge [what his main strengths are]. I don’t like to speak about myself.”

Gabbiadini made an instant impact with his new club after scoring on his Premier League debut in a 3-1 loss to West Ham at the start of February.

Three more league goals have since followed in wins against Sunderland and Watford, as well as that double at Wembley, making the forward the first player to net in his first four matches for the Saints.

The 25-year-old, though, says it is his Southampton team-mates who he has to thank for his flying start to life in England.

“I need to thank the whole team that puts me into the position to score all these goals and the whole atmosphere here at the club that makes me feel happy and comfortable,” Gabbiadini said.

“So, no, it’s not easy because you have great players and great teams in the Premier League and it will not always be so easy, but, for now, I’m enjoying the moment.”

Gabbiadini has already scored more league goals for Southampton than he managed for Napoli in Serie A this season.

And the player thinks that is maybe due to the different tactical approaches seen in the two countries.

“It’s a little different because in Italy the game is more tactical and calmer,” Gabbiadini said.

"When you have the ball, you think, whereas here in England, when you have the ball, you always want to attack and score. If you are 3-0 up or 3-0 down, you always want to attack.

"In Italy, the style of play is calmer. You always try to keep the ball, pass it and wait for the right moment. Here, you always go for it and go for goal.

"I think it’s great for a striker, but not so much for a defender because they are outnumbered or they don’t have time to recover.

"For a striker, it’s great because you have three or four through balls which makes it easier to score, although it’s tougher because you have to go back and forth.

“But it’s nicer for supporters, TV viewers, it’s nicer for them because they see more goals, more action, so, I think it’s more entertaining.”

The Italian’s eye for goal came from watching his older sister play while growing up, with Melania having since gone on to win 86 caps for her country.

And Gabbiadini credits Melania with being a major influence on his career.

“She is one of the best players in Italy and it’s amazing to have her as a sister,” said Gabbiadini. “When I was little I always used to go with my parents to see her play and I wanted to become as good as her, so I can proudly say ‘yes’ [she has been an influence on his career].”

But when it comes to comparing the two, Manolo has no doubts about who is the better striker.

“She is now because she is the strongest player in Italy and I’m not, so she is,” he said. “She has scored a lot of goals and I still haven’t, so, yes, definitely her!”

Every Premier League team’s best fringe player

Show/hide article…

As we enter the final stretch of the season, squad depth becomes crucial in the Premier League.

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane’s injury could see the top four challengers without their main strike threat for a few weeks but, thankfully, saw Heung-Min Son stepping up against Millwall and bagging a hat-trick.

Not every team can call on someone like South Korea international Son, but have a strong fringe to your first-team is vitally important.

So, who are the best of the rest in the Premier League?

Best Bets for Liverpool at Manchester City plus Manchester United and Tottenham

Show/hide article…

Bet that the fairplay flower will bravely poke its way up through the sod at the Etihad on this fine spring day.

It’s been another bleak winter for fans of the Corinthian spirit, but Manchester City and Liverpool can play nice when the mood grabs.

And today’s referee Michael Oliver is the man to nurture that admirable vibe.

Ignore the headline dramas, Oliver’s broadly card-lite, and so is this fixture - the last 10 league meetings average just over 30 bookings points.

Take the Evens (Skybet) about ‘UNDER 45 bookings points’.

You’d have won on 45 of Oliver’s last 79 games.

Lean cuisine on the menu at lunchtime.

And no real evidence for the fashionable hype that a banquet of Middlesbrough goals has been ignored all along by a boss addicted to bread and scrape.

I’ll take a slice of the ‘United clean sheet’ at 11/10 (Hills).

Harry Kane’s last major injury spell saw some thinner times for Tottenham, but they still have the ingredients to frighten Southampton’s enigmatic backline.

Slim stakes for this murky one – ‘Spurs win to nil’ at 19/10 (Coral) is worth a nibble.

Longshot hunters could do worse than Christian Ericksen at 16/1 (Bet365) to ‘score two or more’ - he’s already done it three times in his 15 games at the Lane this season.

The top 20 signings of the 2016/17 season: Who has been the best buy?

Show/hide article…

  1. Oumar Niasse - Exiled by Ronald Koeman at Everton, he has already scored four in 10 since joining Hull in January, and is clearly a useful target man

THE Premier League spent plenty of money in the last couple of transfer windows, but who were the best buys?

Arsenal splashed out £38m on Granit Xhaka last summer, but the Swiss midfielder has mainly made headlines for ill-discipline so doesn’t make the top 20.

Another big money signing to miss out is Manchester City defender John Stones - who has been part of a shoddy backline at the Etihad all season.

We believe in our quality, says Davis

Show/hide article…

Davis was at the double when the side’s met last season in a 2-1 win after Heung-Min Son had given the hosts the lead.

Indeed, owing to Spurs’ scintillating home form since that day, it was the last time a side has won at White Hart Lane in the top-flight, but Davis feels Saints possess the quality to get a result.

“It was a memorable day. For me personally as well getting a couple of goals so more of the same would be delightful all-round,” said Davis

“We believe in the quality we’ve got in the side and that we can give any team a game, away from home as well and we’ve shown that over the last few seasons.

“After winning there last year, we can take belief from that and hopefully get a similar result.”

Le Tissier exclusive: Saints have nothing to fear with Kane injured

Show/hide article…

In-form Southampton will travel to Tottenham this weekend with “nothing to fear” following Harry Kane’s injury, according to Saints legend Matt Le Tissier.

Kane is an instrumental figure in the Spurs frontline, having scored 24 goals in 30 appearances this season, but is set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

The 23-year-old has suffered ankle ligament damage and early fears suggested his season could be over but Mauricio Pochettino says the striker is now confident he can return ahead of schedule.

Sunday’s clash against Claude Puel’s side will definitely come too soon for the England international and Le Tissier believes Kane’s absence could prove to be a leveller, particularly as Tottenham’s other players could be knocked off their stride without their talisman on the pitch

“Their home form is absolutely outstanding so it’s going to be a tough game,” Le Tissier told Standard Sport.

"But - now Harry Kane is out it’s a big blow. He’s such a dominant force for them in terms of their goalscoring, as a leader and as a talisman.

"When such an important player in a team is missing it has an effect on the other players. They can look to him to get them out of trouble at times.

“If they do happen to go a goal down you look round the team and say ‘right - where are we getting back into this?’”

While Spurs are still fighting for a Champions League place Southampton appear to have little left to play for this season following a controversial EFL Cup final defeat to Manchester United.

But Le Tissier is hopeful the prospect of fourth successive top-eight finish will be enough to motivate the South Coast outfit during the run-in.

And, as the last team to win a top-flight fixture at White Hart Lane back in May 2016, Le Tissier is convinced Puel’s side will be aiming to record another upset this weekend.

"When that kind of player [Kane] is missing it does make a difference and hopefully we can take advantage.

"We had a good result there last year and so we have got nothing to fear even though they’re a good team.

“They’ve got some dangerous players but the form we’ve been in the last few weeks we’ve got nothing to fear,” Le Tissier added.

Matt Le Tissier is supporting Jeff Stelling’s latest unbelievable walking challenge for Prostate Cancer UK. Stelling aims to raise £500,000 on his March for Men. That’s 15 walking marathons in 15 days from June 2-16, from Exeter City to Newcastle United – St James Park to St James’ Park. For more details go to prostatecanceruk.org/jeffsmarch
