Gabbiadini in Italy squad

Show/hide article…

The Azzurri host Albania in a World Cup qualifier on Friday 24th March before then visiting Netherlands for a friendly on Tuesday 28th March.

Gabbiadini, who has netted in each of his first four matches for Saints since his arrival from Napoli, is one of 25 players selected in Gian Piero Ventura’s squad.

Italy are currently second in their qualifying group, with ten points from their opening four matches.

Puel: Let’s maintain the momentum

Show/hide article…

Saints have recorded successive away wins against Sunderland and Watford respectively, scoring eight goals in the process.

And ahead of another test on the road, Puel highlighted the importance of those wins after a break without a game.

“I think it was important to win the last game against Watford, it was very, very important,” Puel said.

“With the postponed games against Arsenal and Manchester United you can not play the other teams and take points.

“It was important to stay at a good level in the table without playing and I’m happy with that result and the quality we showed.

“It’s a good thing after the game against Sunderland and the good game we played against United in the final. Against Tottenham we will see.”

Harry Kane feels optimistic about his ankle injury and has joked about returning in less than a month, according to Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs said on Tuesday the injury is considered less serious than the one Kane sustained in September, when he damaged the same ankle ligaments and was out for seven weeks.

Even if Kane is overly confident in hoping to return far sooner, his assessment suggests he could be back for next month’s north London derby against Arsenal on April 30 and may even feature in the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea on April 22.

The cup clash at Wembley will come six weeks after Kane sustained the injury against Millwall last weekend.

“He is very positive, joking about (coming back) after the international break, three to four weeks,” Pochettino said.

“It’s good but we need to be careful with the injury. We trust completely our doctor and physios and that department who look after them in the best way.”

On Kane’s prediction, Pochettino added: "We don’t know. I express the feeling and the way we are doing on the training ground.

"He is very positive but don’t take it like properly my words because if not four, it’s five to six weeks. But the good thing he is very positive.

“If you are positive in your mind you can affect your injury positively.”

Kane has been left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for next week’s matches against Lithuania and Germany, while Tottenham will have to do without their star striker against Southampton on Sunday.

They may also have to cope without their two first-choice full-backs at White Hart Lane, given the club have revealed Kyle Walker twisted his ankle on a day off at home on Monday. Danny Rose is still recovering from a knee problem.

Pochettino would not divulge the cause of Walker’s injury but said the defender had not trained this week and will have to be assessed. He is unlikely, however, to withdraw from the England squad.

Victor Wanyama is also struggling after enduring a “minor problem” against Millwall but Mousa Dembele, who missed the match with an ankle injury, is available. Erik Lamela remains sidelined with a hip injury.

Southampton boss Claude Puel remains wary of Tottenham’s firepower despite the absence of Kane.

Puel knows only too well about their attacking prowess after his side were thumped 4-1 at home by Tottenham in December.

Dele Alli scored twice that day and Son Heung-min was also on target along with Kane.

Puel said: "Of course Kane is an important player for them, but they have other solutions, with Son, Alli, (Vincent) Janssen, (Christian) Eriksen.

"They have many offensive players of quality so they can do without him.

"It’s a good game, a good challenge for us. A difficult game, but we like this game, the possibility to see if we have made progress since the beginning of the season - and since the winter when we lost at home to them.

“They were superior then and now it’s interesting to see our progress.”

Puel could bolster his defence by handing a first start to Martin Caceres.

The former Barcelona and Juventus centre-half, brought in on a free transfer last month, has completed two full under-23s matches to build up his fitness and is now in contention.

U18 Report: Leicester 1-0 Saints

Show/hide article…

Craig Fleming’s side had won their previous four coming into this clash with the Foxes, but were undone by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s second-half effort.

The swirling wind at Leicester’s training ground made it difficult for both sides, but it was Saints who went closest early on, as Will Smallbone’s first-time volley from 18 yards dipped just over the bar.

They had an even better chance to go in front in the 11th minute, as they were awarded a penalty, when Harlem Hale was tripped in the area.

Callum Slattery stepped up to take the spot kick, but, although his effort was heading towards the bottom corner, Foxes keeper Cameron Yates sprung superbly to his right to tip the ball away.

Saints continued to look the more likely to make a breakthrough as the half went on, and they went extremely close in the 32nd minute, as Jonathan Afolabi won the ball off the home defence, drove into the area down the inside-left and flashed a shot just wide of the far post.

The second half saw Leicester take advantage of the wind being largely behind them, and Kinglsey Latham had to make an excellent stop from Harrison Myring in the 52nd minute, after he raced through.

Saints went close on the hour mark, as Aaron O’Driscoll rose to meet a Jake Vokins corner, but his header fizzed just over.

The decisive goal eventually arrived in the 72nd minute, but it was the Foxes who got it, as Dewsbury-Hall’s strike from distance went through a host of bodies and found the corner of the net.

It proved to be enough for the home side, who held on for the three points.

Opposition View: Spurs boss Pochettino

Show/hide article…

Saints were the last team to win at Spurs’ home stadium, with Steven Davis’s double earning them a 2-1 victory in May last year.

Since then, Tottenham’s only defeats at home have come when they have played at Wembley Stadium in European competition.

With Saints having won each of their last two away games, scoring four goals in both of those matches, Pochettino expects to receive a stern challenge this weekend.

The former Southampton boss said: "We know that Southampton are a very good team with very good players and it will be a very tough game, but our objective is to try to play well, try to win, take three points and try to keep our position in the table.”

Pochettino is also aware of the threat that Manolo Gabbiadini could pose, as he seeks to score in his fifth consecutive game for Southampton, but the Spurs boss is not only focusing on the danger he could pose.

"He’s done exceptional, he’s scored a lot of goals, he provides very good things to the team,” he said.

“But it’s not only Gabbiadini – it’s a lot of players that are very good. [This week] the England national team called up four players from Southampton.

“The team is very good and are playing very well so be sure that we will find a very tough game.”

Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini recalled to Italy squad

Show/hide article…

Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini has earned a recall to the Italy squad for the forthcoming games against Albania and Holland after his fine start to life on the south coast.

The former Napoli striker has not featured for the national team since a European Championship qualifier against Malta in September 2015, but a run of nine goals in 11 appearances has alerted the attention of Italy manager Giampiero Ventura.

Serie B goalkeeper Alex Meret is the surprise inclusion in the Azzurri squad.

The 19-year-old Udinese player is on loan with second-division SPAL, who are currently top of the league after putting together an 11-game unbeaten run. He already has 32 underage caps.

Joining Meret as first-timers in the senior Azzurri selection are Atalanta winger Leonardo Spinazzola and Inter Milan full-back Danilo D’Ambrosio, the 28-year-old former Torino player.

Elsewhere in Ventura’s 25-man squad there are few surprises, with breakthrough internationals Roberto Gagliardini, Daniele Rugani, Davide Zappacosta and Nicola Sansone retained.

Italy are set to meet Albania in a World Cup qualifying game in Palermo on March 24 before tackling Danny Blind’s Holland in an Amsterdam friendly four days later.
