Puel’s prank on Ward-Prowse and Redmond

Show/hide article…

PRANKSTER Claude Puel tricked James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond by hauling them into his office at Staplewood, telling them he ‘had a problem’ with the duo – before finally revealing they’d both received England call-ups!

Ward-Prowse and Redmond were picked for the England senior team for the first time this week for games against Germany and Lithuania.

Puel had been informed that Gareth Southgate intended to select the pair, and the St Mary’s boss decided to wind them up before telling them the truth.

“I told them both that I have a problem with them, with their attitude in the training session and called them in to know their opinion,” he smiled.

"But big congratulations to them both and also to all the club, their team-mates, staff and all the trainers that have work with them.

“All the staff, all the trainers have been important for their evolution and progress and it’s a good reward.”

The Saints boss was delighted for the pair.

“It’s a good reward for everyone,” he said. “Many seasons the club work with quality and evolution of young players and it’s important to continue that.

"You can see all that with James.

“I looked at an interview of when he was 13. It was the same spirit. I think James is the ideal son in law.

“It’s fantastic, he’s an intelligent player. He makes progress because he listened. It’s easy to train James and for Nathan it’s a talented player.

“Sometimes he didn’t listen enough but he make progress since the beginning of the season, with a good clinical for the last game.

“It’s important he understands he has all the quality to become a strong striker, a very good striker because with his feet, his quality, I think he can score other goals and give a good assist.”

Puel reveals Saints players’ anger

Show/hide article…

CLAUDE Puel has admitted that he has lots of “angry” Saints players on his hands – but says that’s only a good thing!

Having had games come thick and fast in the first-half of the season, with Saints playing 38 games – the length of the Premier League campaign – by early February in all competitions, Puel could utilise his full squad, writes Peter Howard.

Such was the level of the Frenchman’s rotation policy that it wasn’t until the EFL Cup final at the end of last month that Puel named an identical side in consecutive games.

But with Puel now finding a settled team in the 4-2-3-1 formation, it has left many Saints stars without a place in the team.

Subsequently, many, like Jay Rodriguez, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Sofiane Boufal and Sam McQueen, have appeared for the club’s under-23s as a way of getting game-time.

And Puel admitted that while it’s impossible to keep all his players happy, with many of them angry at the lack of opportunities, he doesn’t view that as a negative.

“It’s not possible [to keep everyone happy],” he said. “The players that cannot play are angry, but this is normal because all the players want to play.

“It’s normal and I want them to stay angry with this feeling and spirit, but to keep a good attitude on the group.

“It’s important the players can feel this because they’ve got to make progress, to win his place during the training sessions and develop himself.

“The competition for places is important but of course some players are happy because they can play often, but other players are not.

“It’s important for the staff and all the squad to keep a good attitude and keep a good spirit to work in the training session and to try and change the manager’s opinion.

He added: “It’s a positive, but it must be anger with a respect for the team, with the respect for their team-mates and the staff.”

One player who is unlikely to go without playing chances is free-scoring Manolo Gabbiadini, who has netted six goals in his first four Saints appearances since his £14m move from Napoli in January.

Puel hailed the Italian’s contribution since his arrival.

“The profile of Manolo was interesting for us because he’s a clinical player,” he said. “But it’s not just his goals, it’s a good player because it’s easy to play with him, give a good solution, a good run.

“His movement in the box is interesting. He’s always available for his partners with good technical and quality in the control in the pass and to combine with him is good.”

Puel believes that Gabbiadini has given confidence to the entire squad.

“It’s important to make progress, but I don’t know if he can continue to score in every game because it’s difficult,” he said.

“But he can give a confidence for all the players like you saw with Nathan in the last game at Watford and all the players like Dusan and Ward-Prowse.

“And for all the other strikers in the squad to see him and to play with him is interesting and will give confidence to all.”

Caceres is ready for Tottenham

Show/hide article…

MARTIN Caceres is ready to compete for a starting role at the heart of Saints’ defence ahead of the trip to Tottenham tomorrow.

Caceres, the former Barcelona and Juventus man who was brought in on a free transfer last month, has completed two full under-23s matches and is now ready to battle for his place at centre-back.

The 29-year-old has been working up to match fitness, having not played a game in more than a year before his arrival at St Mary’s.

Now boss Claude Puel revealed that Caceres has now proved fit enough to challenge Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens for a place at central defence.

“I’m pleased with his progression and the attitude of Martin,” said Puel. “He played the last two games with the under-23s against Chelsea and Manchester United, which was important for him.

“He is now available and he now comes in with the competition between the centre-backs.

“Martin’s at a good level with good training sessions and he’s available for the team.”

After Saints leaked three goals in the 4-3 win at Watford last time out, Puel would not rule out the possibility of handing Caceres a place in his eleven at White Hart Lane.

“We will see for that,” he said. “It’s now a competition between Caceres, Stephens, Yoshida and Gardos. We have those solutions now.

“In April we’ve got to play every three days after the international break and we don’t know what can happen in the international games.

“It’s important to have Martin with us.”

Meanwhile, nine-goal top-scorer Charlie Austin has returned to first-team training as he continues his comeback from a dislocated shoulder.

Austin has been out since early December, having suffered the injury in Saints’ Europa League draw with Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

The striker joined his team-mates at Staplewood and Puel admitted it was “fantastic” to see the 27-year-old back on the pitch.

The St Mary’s chief also revealed that long-term absentee Jeremy Pied is back in training with the under-23s.

The attacking right-back was brought in by Puel last summer, but sustained a nasty knee injury in training in August.

Puel stated that Austin’s first-team return is still some time away, with appearances for the under-23s to come before any comeback.

“You can see, for example, in the training session this morning, it was fantastic, every goal he can score he celebrates,” said Puel, reconstructing Austin’s training ground celebration by lifting his hands above his head and fist pumping.

“It was like an official game for him,” he added, smiling. “It was fantastic to see him this morning.”

Puel is excited by the prospect of having free-scoring Manolo Gabbiadini, who has scored six goals in his first four games at Saints, and Austin, Jay Rodriguez and Shane Long competing for one striker’s place.

“It’s not just Charlie or Gabbiadini, it’s Jay Rodriguez and Shane Long, we have four striker for the same position,” he said.

“It’s always a competition between them. We have four good strikers. Manolo plays and scores, so perhaps for the moment it’s difficult for the others.

"But it’s a good thing to have good competition between themselves.

“We will see when we have a choice.

"It’s interesting, but with one game in two weeks it’s difficult for some players.

“We developed many players since the beginning of the season with all these games played. Now with one game it’s difficult for some players.

“But it’s a good thing to have many different possibilities.”

Match Preview: Spurs vs Saints

Show/hide article…

THE MATCH

Tottenham Hotspur vs Southampton

Sunday 19th March

2.15pm GMT

Premier League

White Hart Lane

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Saints start the weekend in tenth position in the table, with games in hand on the teams around them.

The highest they could hope to climb is ninth, though, which would require the full complement of points at White Hart Lane, as well as a loss for Stoke at home to leaders Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.

Spurs will be hoping for the opposite result in both games, as Mauricio Pochettino’s side, who head into the latest round of matches second in the Premier League, look to close the ten-point gap to the Blues.

TEAM NEWS:

Tottenham Hotspur: Harry Kane’s absence has been the big injury news in the division this week, with the Spurs striker set for a number of weeks on the sidelines after damaging ankle ligaments. Former Saints midfielder Victor Wanyama is doubtful with a slight knock, as is Kyle Walker, but Mousa Dembélé is fit. Danny Rose and Erik Lamela remain absent.

Southampton: There are no fresh injury concerns for Claude Puel, who could name an unchanged starting line-up for the fourth game in a row. But new signing Martín Cáceres has now made two appearances for the Under-23s and could be pushing for a first appearance.

FORM GUIDE:

Tottenham’s previous five:

Millwall (h) W 6-0 (FA Cup)

Everton (h) W 3-2

Stoke City (h) W 4-0

Gent (h) D 2-2 (Europa League)

Fulham (a) W 3-0 (FA Cup)

Southampton’s previous five:

Watford (a) W 4-3

Manchester United (n) L 2-3 (EFL Cup)

Sunderland (a) W 4-0

West Ham United (h) L 1-3

Swansea City (a) L 2-1

TOP PERFORMERS

Spurs will be without their biggest danger man, with 24-goal Harry Kane sidelined through injury, but they possess plenty of other firepower. Between them, Dele Alli and Son Heung-Min have 30 goals across all competitions this season, while Christian Eriksen’s 16 assists mark him out as a major threat as always.

Top scorers: Harry Kane (24), Dele Alli (16), Son Heung-Min (14)

Most assists: Christian Eriksen (16), Erik Lamela (6)

Manolo Gabbiadini and Nathan Redmond are fast closing in on Charlie Austin’s lead at the top of the scoring charts, and they are not the only players in Southampton’s attacking four who are shining, with Dušan Tadić and James Ward-Prowse also sitting atop the club’s assist chart.

Top scorers: Charlie Austin (9), Manolo Gabbiadini, Nathan Redmond (6)

Most assists: Dušan Tadić (6), James Ward-Prowse (5)

PREVIOUS MEETINGS

All-time record:

Played: 118

Tottenham: 52

Draws: 29

Southampton: 37

Previous four meetings:

December 2016: Southampton 1-4 Tottenham (van Dijk)

May 2016: Tottenham 1-2 Southampton (Davis 2)

December 2015: Southampton 0-2 Tottenham

April 2015: Southampton 2-2 Tottenham (Pellè 2)

DID YOU KNOW?

Manolo Gabbiadini will become only the third player in Premier League history to score in each of his first four appearances in the competition if he finds the net against Spurs.

The Italian striker has now scored in each of his last seven competitive appearances, including all four of his matches with Southampton.

Saints have scored four goals in each of their past two league games – the last time they did it over three games was in December 1980, with that run including a 4-4 draw at White Hart Lane.
