The Prediction Challenge: Chris Sutton vs Paul Newman
Show/hide article…
Welcome to The Prediction Challenge.
It’s what millions of us do every day - predicting what the score will be in a Premier League match.
Whether it’s a thumping 4-0 home win, a sneaky three points on the road or a 0-0 bore draw, let’s be honest – we all think we can tip the outcome of the next game.
Well, now we’ve challenged Sportsmail’s experts to test their prediction power.
Each week, we’ll ask one of our star columnists to go head to head with one of our top team of reporters.
They will offer their prediction for each Premier League match - and explain why they went for that score.
Next up, it’s CHRIS SUTTON vs cricket correspondent PAUL NEWMAN… and don’t forget to tell us your predictions by leaving a comment below.
CHRIS SUTTON: How can you predict which Arsenal side are going to turn up? They beat Lincoln convincingly in the FA Cup but were only really scintillating after they scored the second goal. West Brom are a well-organised side and I expect this to be a draw - West Brom 2-2 Arsenal
PAUL NEWMAN: West Brom have been suffering from 40 point syndrome since reaching the magic safety number but this could be the game when they awake from their slumber and Arsenal’s bid for a top four place begins to unravel - West Brom 2-1 Arsenal
CS: With five of the top six still to play, it is essential for Palace that they win this one. They should maintain their recent run of form with a victory here - Crystal Palace 2-1 Watford
PN : Big Sam is finally beginning to work his survival magic at Palace and with Wilfried Saha looking to seal his summer move to Tottenham I reckon they will just have too much for Watford - Crystal Palace 1-0 Watford
CS: Hull have been terrible away from home and will be hoping that the Romelu Lukaku situation derails Everton. Despite the events of this week I expect Ronald Koeman’s side to get home and dry - Everton 3-1 Hull
PN : Fascinating to see if there is an anti Romelu Lukaku reaction from Goodison after his astonishing interview with Dominic King in midweek. He clearly feels he is too good for Everton but will he be too good for a revitalised Hull? Everton 1-1 Hull
CS: Who is going to stop Chelsea? I don’t think Stoke are strong enough to do so - Stoke 0-2 Chelsea
PN: Hard to see Stoke stopping the Chelsea bandwagon despite their decent result against Man City last week - Stoke 1-3 Chelsea
CS: This really is a must-win for Sunderland, who are running out of chances. Burnley’s away form is horrendous but they performed well at Liverpool and can count themselves unlucky not to have taken anything from the game - Sunderland 1-1 Burnley
PN: Sunderland look certain of the drop now and not even Jermain Defoe, rightfully returned to the England squad this week, can save them. Burnley are a shadow of the side that have turned Turf Moor into a fortress away from home but this could be their day for three away points - Sunderland 0-1 Burnley
CS: Will Leicester make it four wins from four under Craig Shakespeare? This is such a difficult one to call but I can see West Ham edging it - West Ham 2-1 Leicester
PN: Sorry, I can’t join in a second Leicester love in. It was hard enough last season. Yes reaching the Champions League quarter-finals is a fantastic achievement but the players should hang their heads – rather than Jamie Vardy putting his in Samir Nasri’s face - for downing tools on Claudio Ranieri. West Ham to put them in their place - West Ham 1-0 Leicester
CS: Bournemouth had a great result against West Ham last week but they keep conceding at home. Paul Clement has done a good job since taking over at Swansea - Bournemouth 2-2 Swansea
PN: I really like Eddie Howe and Bournemouth and I really would like Swansea to stay up because they play the game the right way and half their team used to play for Spurs. I’ll go for an entertaining draw - Bournemouth 2-2 Swansea
CS: Steve Agnew will be looking for a reaction from his players after the sacking of Aitor Karanka but scoring goals has been a problem for Middlesbrough. United have struggled to get over the line in games and will be without Paul Pogba through injury - Middlesbrough 0-0 Manchester United
PN: Jose Mourinho is up to his tricks again making as if United are the only team who have ever faced fixture congestion. But his return to his old self means he is making his mark on United and even though he says ‘we will lose’ on Sunday I don’t think they will, even if Boro have been freed from Aitor Karanka’s shackles - Middlesbrough 0-1 Man United
CS: It will be interesting to see how Tottenham get on without Harry Kane. I expect them to edge this – and they have to keep winning to secure their place in the top four - Tottenham 2-1 Southampton
PN: Time for Heung-Min Son and the lesser spotted Vincent Janssen to stand up in the absence of Harry Kane and I think they will, at least against Southampton. Might get more tricky the longer Harry is out - Tottenham 3-1 Southampton
CS: Liverpool played really poorly against Burnley, while City are good going forwards but suspect at the back. I can see this being a high-scoring draw - Manchester City 3-3 Liverpool
PN: The hardest game to predict. Which Liverpool will turn up? And will there be a post Champions League hangover for Pep Guardiola? I reckon City will just have enough but that shaky defence of theirs will concede at least once - Manchester City 2-1 Liverpool
