The Prediction Challenge: Chris Sutton vs Paul Newman

Show/hide article…

Welcome to The Prediction Challenge.

It’s what millions of us do every day - predicting what the score will be in a Premier League match.

Whether it’s a thumping 4-0 home win, a sneaky three points on the road or a 0-0 bore draw, let’s be honest – we all think we can tip the outcome of the next game.

Well, now we’ve challenged Sportsmail’s experts to test their prediction power.

Each week, we’ll ask one of our star columnists to go head to head with one of our top team of reporters.

They will offer their prediction for each Premier League match - and explain why they went for that score.

Next up, it’s CHRIS SUTTON vs cricket correspondent PAUL NEWMAN… and don’t forget to tell us your predictions by leaving a comment below.

CHRIS SUTTON: How can you predict which Arsenal side are going to turn up? They beat Lincoln convincingly in the FA Cup but were only really scintillating after they scored the second goal. West Brom are a well-organised side and I expect this to be a draw - West Brom 2-2 Arsenal

PAUL NEWMAN: West Brom have been suffering from 40 point syndrome since reaching the magic safety number but this could be the game when they awake from their slumber and Arsenal’s bid for a top four place begins to unravel - West Brom 2-1 Arsenal

CS: With five of the top six still to play, it is essential for Palace that they win this one. They should maintain their recent run of form with a victory here - Crystal Palace 2-1 Watford

PN : Big Sam is finally beginning to work his survival magic at Palace and with Wilfried Saha looking to seal his summer move to Tottenham I reckon they will just have too much for Watford - Crystal Palace 1-0 Watford

CS: Hull have been terrible away from home and will be hoping that the Romelu Lukaku situation derails Everton. Despite the events of this week I expect Ronald Koeman’s side to get home and dry - Everton 3-1 Hull

PN : Fascinating to see if there is an anti Romelu Lukaku reaction from Goodison after his astonishing interview with Dominic King in midweek. He clearly feels he is too good for Everton but will he be too good for a revitalised Hull? Everton 1-1 Hull

CS: Who is going to stop Chelsea? I don’t think Stoke are strong enough to do so - Stoke 0-2 Chelsea

PN: Hard to see Stoke stopping the Chelsea bandwagon despite their decent result against Man City last week - Stoke 1-3 Chelsea

CS: This really is a must-win for Sunderland, who are running out of chances. Burnley’s away form is horrendous but they performed well at Liverpool and can count themselves unlucky not to have taken anything from the game - Sunderland 1-1 Burnley

PN: Sunderland look certain of the drop now and not even Jermain Defoe, rightfully returned to the England squad this week, can save them. Burnley are a shadow of the side that have turned Turf Moor into a fortress away from home but this could be their day for three away points - Sunderland 0-1 Burnley

CS: Will Leicester make it four wins from four under Craig Shakespeare? This is such a difficult one to call but I can see West Ham edging it - West Ham 2-1 Leicester

PN: Sorry, I can’t join in a second Leicester love in. It was hard enough last season. Yes reaching the Champions League quarter-finals is a fantastic achievement but the players should hang their heads – rather than Jamie Vardy putting his in Samir Nasri’s face - for downing tools on Claudio Ranieri. West Ham to put them in their place - West Ham 1-0 Leicester

CS: Bournemouth had a great result against West Ham last week but they keep conceding at home. Paul Clement has done a good job since taking over at Swansea - Bournemouth 2-2 Swansea

PN: I really like Eddie Howe and Bournemouth and I really would like Swansea to stay up because they play the game the right way and half their team used to play for Spurs. I’ll go for an entertaining draw - Bournemouth 2-2 Swansea

CS: Steve Agnew will be looking for a reaction from his players after the sacking of Aitor Karanka but scoring goals has been a problem for Middlesbrough. United have struggled to get over the line in games and will be without Paul Pogba through injury - Middlesbrough 0-0 Manchester United

PN: Jose Mourinho is up to his tricks again making as if United are the only team who have ever faced fixture congestion. But his return to his old self means he is making his mark on United and even though he says ‘we will lose’ on Sunday I don’t think they will, even if Boro have been freed from Aitor Karanka’s shackles - Middlesbrough 0-1 Man United

CS: It will be interesting to see how Tottenham get on without Harry Kane. I expect them to edge this – and they have to keep winning to secure their place in the top four - Tottenham 2-1 Southampton

PN: Time for Heung-Min Son and the lesser spotted Vincent Janssen to stand up in the absence of Harry Kane and I think they will, at least against Southampton. Might get more tricky the longer Harry is out - Tottenham 3-1 Southampton

CS: Liverpool played really poorly against Burnley, while City are good going forwards but suspect at the back. I can see this being a high-scoring draw - Manchester City 3-3 Liverpool

PN: The hardest game to predict. Which Liverpool will turn up? And will there be a post Champions League hangover for Pep Guardiola? I reckon City will just have enough but that shaky defence of theirs will concede at least once - Manchester City 2-1 Liverpool

Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier tells Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse deserve their England call-ups

Show/hide article…

Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier believes Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse deserve their England call-ups for ‘taking their game to another level.’

The Saints duo have been selected for a senior squad for the first time and look set to feature under Gareth Southgate in friendlies against Germany and Lithuania later this month.

Southampton boss Claude Puel played a prank on his players pretending he had a problem with their attitude in training before telling them the good news.

Redmond and Prowse are both well known to Southgate having worked closely with the pair during his time as the England U-21 manager.

And Le Tissier feels the duo’s existing relationship with Southgate is likely to give them an edge over other players in the squad.

“Over the last few weeks they’ve both been excellent. They’ve hit real good form just when the squad was being announced,” Le Tissier told Drivetime.

“There was a period earlier on in the season when Nathan [Redmond] was struggling a bit in front of goal – he was getting a lot of chances – and not sticking them away.

“But in the last few weeks his form has really picked up and it looks like he has taken his game to another level confidence-wise.

“Prowsey has always been a pretty consistent performer, but I think his levels have gone up in these last few weeks – I thought he was excellent in the [EFL] Cup final – it was probably one of the best games he’s had for Southampton.

“And obviously both of them would have impressed at U-21 level when Gareth [Southgate] was there and that’s got to have had a big baring on Gareth’s decision.”

PAUL MERSON COLUMN: Harry Redknapp should replace Karanka, Pogba will shine next year

Show/hide article…

If they get Harry in until the end of the season, he will get them out of trouble. He plays an attacking brand of football and fills his players with confidence. They need to win matches. They don’t need a long-term appointment who would be worried about his job and just try to make sure they don’t lose every week. They need someone to come in and keep them up, someone who has nothing to prove. I think Harry would take it under those circumstances and then they could look at it again in the summer. It’s very late in the season now to sack your manager so the timing is very strange. If it’s player power that has brought him down, the players should have gone to the chairman a lot quicker than this. I would have kept him on because he is still a good manager. He’s just been too stubborn. But they are going down with a whimper at the moment.

“If they get Harry in until the end of the season, he will get them out of trouble” That’s because he hasn’t changed anything all season. They don’t score enough goals and it’s hurting them. He should be playing with two up front, or at least trying to attack teams. Other sides get relegated because they are out of their depth. But they always have a go. Boro don’t even do that. I’ve never seen anything like it before. They are just sleepwalking towards the drop. I played at Middlesbrough and I loved it. It’s a great place with great fans. But I can’t see how they are going to stay up. They are a gift to their rivals right now. Karanka will probably look back and think he should have had somebody stronger in there as his No.2 – somebody who would have challenged him and convinced him to change. But if Boro think they are going to do a Leicester by putting Steve Agnew in charge, they need to think again.

You can’t suddenly expect the Boro players to become world beaters just because the manager leaves, because they weren’t beating the best in the world in the first place. The first thing they need to do now is have a go, though, because whoever plays up front for Boro at the moment looks so isolated that you can only feel sorry for them. No wonder Alvaro Negredo hasn’t scored many goals. They brought Patrick Bamford in during the window and he’s hardly played either, so what was the point of doing it? I always say that if you do the same things over and over again you get the same results – and that’s what’s happening at Boro. So they should go for it against Manchester United. Play two up top and try to win the game. They are running out of time. I think Sunderland are already down. I can’t see them turning it around.

But Bournemouth suddenly look like they are safe. Hull had a good win the other day as well but you just wonder where Boro’s next big result is coming from. Even Crystal Palace have started winning games but they do have some tough matches coming up. They probably have the hardest run-in. Boro’s fixture list isn’t easy either. They need to get their act together quickly or it will all be over. PAUL POGBA is going to rip up the Premier League – next season. I hope Jose Mourinho wasn’t having a go at people like me when he took a pop at pundits for criticising Pogba because I’ve said nothing bad about him.

He’s a young player, he didn’t really have a pre-season and he was thrown straight in as soon as he joined Manchester United. I don’t think he’s as fit as people think he is and that’s not his fault really. Once he has a proper pre-season, he’ll be fitter and stronger and he’ll know his role better. At the moment he is too deep. He needs to play further up the pitch but when you do that, it helps to have a centre-forward with pace. They don’t have that with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Next season is the one. You have to remember he was playing in Italy for a team who were so much better than everyone else. His confidence will be low at the moment and it doesn’t matter who you are, it’s the worst thing in the world when that happens. But he’ll come back. And then we’ll see the real Pogba.

We have belief, says Davis

Show/hide article…

The Northern Ireland international scored twice in last season’s meeting at White Hart Lane in a 2-1 success.

That was the last time Mauricio Pochettino’s men lost at home, but Davis says the squad are relishing the test.

“We’ll take a lot of belief from our recent performances and obviously the strong performances away from home,” he said.

“Also the character that we’ve shown in the last couple of games, we’re going to need that again because it’s a tough place to go and they’re a very good side. It’s a good game for us.

“I think the best thing to do is to win games and you get a lot of confidence from that. The performances on the whole have been very good over the last couple of games.

“It’s a continuation of that and hopefully we can keep the run going.”

Dusan Tadic hails flourishing partnership with striker Manolo Gabbiadini

Show/hide article…

Four games, six goals, and £17million already looking well spent by Southampton.

If Manolo Gabbiadini adds to his impressive tally at Tottenham tomorrow, nobody will be happier than team-mate Dusan Tadic.

The Serbian is aiming to be the man loading the bullets for the Saints’ new star striker, as the club target their third Premier League win on the bounce.

Both players were on the scoresheet two weeks ago as Southampton clinched a hard-fought, 4-3 win at Watford.

Tadic, 28, is now hoping to form a partnership with Gabbiadini, who just cannot stop scoring.

“I like to make goals but sometimes a nice assist is even better than a goal,” Tadic said. “Manolo is very important for us. He is a very smart player and knows how to score.

“He is a team player, which is even more important. We have a good connection. We understand each other and, I hope, the more we do that, the more we can help the club.”

The Saints may have suffered a controversial League Cup final defeat to Zlatan Ibrahomovic-inspired Manchester United last month, but confidence remains high that they can finish the season strongly.

“We didn’t deserve to lose against United but sometimes the best team doesn’t win,” Tadic said. “We needed to react against Watford and we did that. Now the mood is very good.”

Signed from FC Twente for £11million three years ago, Tadic has seen the man who brought him to the club – Ronald Koeman – move on to Everton.

Tadic believes Claude Puel has coped well with the loss of club captain Jose Fonte and, having signed a new deal last year himself, the midfielder remains confident Saints will continue defying expectations.

“We have lost a lot of important players but that’s football.” he said. “The club still has a good philosophy. It is still going in the right direction. That’s why I signed a new deal.”

Even with Harry Kane missing for Spurs the task will be a tough one for Saints. Mauricio Pochettino’s title chasers boast the joint-best defensive record in the Premier League with leaders Chelsea.

Son Heung-min hit a hat-trick in the north Londoners’ 6-0 win over Millwall last weekend to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals, while Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and summer signing Vincent Janssen were also on the scoresheet.

Despite Janssen’s struggles, Tadic, a former FC Twente midfielder, knows all about his quality, following last season’s goal spree at AZ Alkmaar. Tadic has urged Janssen not to throw in the towel despite a difficult first year in the Premier League.

He added: “He is a very good player but Tottenham are a very strong team, and there is also a lot of competition.

“At the beginning he started well, then he picked up an injury. After that it was difficult to come back.

“But it is important that players have qualities and he has qualities. He has to believe in himself and, in time, everything will come for him.

“Football is like that. You never know when things will change. So you can never give up. Sometimes you have tough moments, sometimes good moments, and this is normal in football.

“You need to push yourself and, in time, everything will come together at the right time.”

Southampton boss Claude Puel makes bizarre comments on midfield ace

Show/hide article…

Southampton trio Ward-Prowse, Nathan Redmond and Fraser Forster have all been called up for next week’s games against Germany and Lithuania. “He is the ideal son-in-law,” he said. “I think he is fantastic. I looked at an interview when he was 10 or 11 and he was in the same spirit as he is now.

“It’s easy to train James and he has made the progress because he listens and importantly he wants to progress. “He is the prototype for the academy. It is not just about making professional footballers but also developing men.” Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Tottenham, Puel revealed the novel way he broke the good news to Ward-Prowse and Redmond. “I told them the news by calling them into the office saying ‘I had a problem with their attitudes in the training session and to know their opinion as to why’,” said Puel.

“After I said: ‘I don’t understand why you’ve been called up to England but ok’.” The Frenchman was also full of praise for Redmond, although he revealed that his hearing is sometimes selective. He added: “He is a talented player and sometimes he doesn’t listen enough but he has made good progress since the beginning of the season. “He was clinical in his last game and he has all the qualities to become a top striker.”
