Ward-Prowse and Redmond make England debuts on proud night for Saints

Show/hide article…

James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond made their England debuts on a proud night for Saints.

The club’s total representation on the pitch for the 1-0 friendly defeat to Germany in Dortmund totalled three with Ryan Bertrand also figuring, while Fraser Forster was an unused sub.

In a tribute to the youth system at St Mary’s, three Saints academy graduates figured in the match for their country – Ward-Prowse, Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw.

Bertrand started the game and played well, figuring for virtually the whole match in an unfamiliar left wing back position, the Saints star having played as a centre half when Ronald Koeman used three centre halves during his time as St Mary’s boss.

Redmond was introduced to the action on 66 minutes and put in a lively display, given a certain amount of freedom in an attacking role and regularly dropping deep to link up the play as well as trying to beat players.

Ward-Prowse was handed his first cap seven minutes from time in a central midfield role.

The squad will now head back to England before taking on Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley on Sunday, with the Saints contingent hoping for more international experience.

Overall, England promised much but Gareth Southgate’s first match as permanent manager ended in defeat as Lukas Podolski marked his final Germany appearance with a stunning winner.

Handed the reins after an encouraging four-match interim stint, the former defender deployed a bold, attack-minded side built upon a three-man backline and got an impressive response.

England looked comfortable in possession and a far larger threat than the World Cup winners, only to be caught cold as Podolski’s 130th and final Germany appearance ended with a fairytale strike that secured a 1-0 win.

It was a sickener considering how well Southgate’s men performed - but given how 2016 panned out for the Three Lions after starting it with a remarkable comeback win in Berlin perhaps the display is more important than the result.

Southgate’s experimental three-man defence worked well and his attackers’ intensity caused no end of problems, with Lallana hitting the post as England looked to turn first-half dominance into an opening goal.

Germany lacked such force in their play as the focus on Podolski’s final appearance seemed to take the edge off their play, only for the former Arsenal man to wind back the years by unleashing a stunning 25-yard goal.

It was a fitting end to a fine international career on a night of promise for England, even if it ended Southgate’s four-match unbeaten run as manager.

There was a sombre mood around the Three Lions camp before the match, with Southgate saying the Westminster terror attack “puts football into perspective”.

The Football Association chose to mark the attack in Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against Lithuania instead of at Signal Iduna Park, where the hosts said farewell to popular forward Podolski.

The former Arsenal man’s heartfelt speech delayed kick-off in Dortmund and brought a testimonial feel to an occasion that England appeared to approach with far greater desire.

Jamie Vardy spearheaded Southgate’s high-pressing side, failing to win an early penalty as he proved a handful for a defence struggling to contain Lallana and Dele Alli’s movement.

Debutant Michael Keane lashed over from a corner as the Three Lions pushed for an opener with surprising aggression, while Jake Livermore, winning his second cap 1,680 days after his debut, held firm in the middle.

Song about German bombers from the away end were the only black mark on an enjoyable start by England, with Eric Dier - the matchwinner in Berlin last March - heading a corner goalwards but seeing Marc-Andre ter Stegen gather comfortably.

England’s bright start nearly brought a deserved opener in the 31st minute as Lallana went on a marauding run down the left. Showing few ill-effects of his lung-busting run, the attacking midfielder’s low shot beat Ter Stegen but rebounded off the far post.

Vardy was well-placed to turn the ball home had Lallana passed on a night when the home fans were far more interested in cheering everything Podolski did, no matter how small the contribution.

Debutant Timo Werner would have given Germany something to enjoy had he picked Joe Hart’s pocket, but the goalkeeper epitomised the confidence coursing through England with a Cruyff turn.

Dier failed with a 20-yard free-kick and Ter Stegen held firm to deny an admittedly poor Dele finish before half-time.

Julian Brandt fizzed a shot wide and Podolski nearly latched onto a ball into the box after the break, although England were still pushing for a goal themselves.

Livermore’s quietly impressive performance continued by winning possession and feeding Vardy down the right, but Dele was unable to latch onto the resulting cross at the far post.

Dier was denied by Ter Stegen and then Dele blocked from a corner, before Andre Schurrle shot across the face of goal.

Nathan Redmond came on for his debut as England pushed for a goal, but minutes after his introduction Podolski gave the public what they wanted.

Toni Kroos’ pass was laid off by Schurrle into the path of the 31-year-old, who made space for himself before rifling home an outstanding left-footed drive.

The 69th-minute goal and a clutch of changes, including a debut for Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse, took the sting out of England’s display as Germany looked to add a second.

Hart did well to prevent Leroy Sane finding the net after wriggling free, while substitute John Stones’ timely block prevented the hosts doubling their lead.

Saints could go global in takeover deal

Show/hide article…

Saints will look to turn themselves into a major player on the global sporting stage if a £190m takeover from Chinese investors goes through.

Lander Sports Development have been in talks with Saints owner Katharina Liebherr for the best part of a year over a potential investment at St Mary’s, but even officials inside the club had all but given up hope of anything happening after the trail went cold two months ago.

That coincided with the end of Lander’s exclusivity period to try and get a deal done, with it being understood that the Chinese firm were unwilling to part with around £180m for a potential minority stake.

However, fresh reports have indicated that Liebherr’s representatives have negotiated a settlement whereby she would get £190m, and retain a minority stake, which would be a more palatable deal for such heavy investors.

There is still a level of uncertainty at the club as to exactly what may be afoot.

The takeover talks are with representatives of Liebherr as the owner of the business, rather than with the club and their officials directly.

Few would blame Liebherr if she decided to sell at least a portion of the club.

The Liebherrs have invested around £69m in Saints, including the original purchase of the club by the late Markus Liebherr.

What few realise is that Markus only invested £16m of the overall total himself, with the remaining £53m funded by Katharina – sometimes maligned by fans for not pouring cash into the coffers - after she inherited the club.

Katharina is also not worth the reported billions often attributed to her.

Markus split from the family business, which is worth more than £1bn, with Katharina inheriting his business interests after he died.

She is still very wealthy, but her worth is speculated to be more in the hundreds of millions, meaning the price offered for the club is still a significant return on her and her father’s investment.

However, Katharina has continually made it clear that she would only sell if she felt it was in the best interests of the club.

With Saints keen to establish themselves as regular challengers for European football, an influx of cash from China could be seen as the answer.

Chinese companies, often backed by the state, have been investing in sport, and the hope for Saints would be not only an investment of capital into the business, but also a wider global footprint.

Saints are pushing on with their development in the US, but have yet to make a significant indent in the Far East.

With the club targeting an increase in commercial revenue to make them competitive with some of the Premier League’s bigger clubs, this could open a gateway.

The club last week revealed their accounts for the year ending June 2016, which showed a modest profit and underlined the investment in the playing squad.

While broadcast revenues continue to rise, chief executive Gareth Rogers was keen to highlight just how important commercial growth is to the business if they are to compete with the Premier League big guns.

“The growth in turnover is certainly the longer term ambition of the club and not just because that’s what we should be doing, but as a club we were underperforming from a turnover perspective,” he said.

“If you want to go right back to the 1960s and probably before that and look at player wages, they have only gone in one direction.

“Is it right for us to always rely on broadcasting income? We have to rely on that significantly but we don’t want that to be our sole source of income. We want to supplement that to become more competitive.

“Something levelled at many football clubs is that you have the broadcasting income and so you don’t need to worry about commercial income as it is so small.

“Well actually everybody has the broadcasting income and the difference between the top and the bottom is not that great in the spread in the Premier League.

“Therefore, your competitive advantage comes from being able to have greater commercial income.

“Look at the top six clubs and their competitive advantage comes from massive commercial income, not necessarily from broadcasting. That puts them in the Champions League which gets them greater broadcasting income, but the commercial income is huge and not what the Premier League brings you.

“It’s not a significant portion of our income, but it’s the competitive advantage it brings us.”

Liebherr is scheduled to be repaid £31m in loans she has given the club, but this is a possibility rather than a certainty.

It again underlines the size of the investment she has made in Saints in a bid to deliver the kind of club her father wanted.

Katharina invested heavily to lend the club money at a time when Saints’ finances were looking rocky, with the current regime having tried to build a more solid footing.

In his accounts release interview, Rogers explained: “When we spoke two or three years ago we always said the level of debt was going to grow in order to arrest the cash outflows happening within the business, we had to do that, we had to stabilise the club, to make it sustainable and grew the revenue to how the club was going to develop going forward.

“At some point in time when we spoke back then we had to arrest that level of debt.

“We can’t continue with the level of debt the club has compared to its turnover. It’s not healthy, it’s not right for the club to continue to operate with a £62m debt level.

“Next year we will end up with turnover much higher than at the moment because of the new broadcasting contracts, but it’s too high and not healthy for the club to continue with that going forward.

“However we reduce the debt, and whoever that debt is reduced against, we can’t continue that moving forward.”

Of most immediate concern to Saints fans will be exactly what Lander want with their club, and to be reassured that Liebherr is selling for the right reasons, rather than pure profit.

Though the club cannot say anything even if they wanted to at this stage of proceedings, they are able to point to the rare statement she issued when Lander went public with their interest – something they were forced to do as they are listed on the Chinese stock exchange, which might prove the next definitive source of information if this develops further.

Libeherr said: “I am writing to you in relation to an announcement made in China today about Southampton Football Club and Lander Holding.

“Please understand that I can only make limited comments regarding this process but I can assure you that any steps we do take will be in the best interests of the club. A potential partnership would need to clear multiple approvals and fulfil strict criteria before being confirmed.

“The Premier League is increasingly competitive; we need to keep moving forward and look to new markets for commercial growth, innovation and to share our journey. Together we have had many years of progression and success, and ensuring this continues is the main focus of any possible partnership.”

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher tested in ‘The Referees - Onside with Carragher and Neville’

Do Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have what it takes to be professional referees?

The pundits were put through their paces by Premier League referees for a special programme to be shown on April 2 on Sky Sports called The Referees - Onside with Carragher & Neville.

From brandishing the cards to running the line to even taking a fitness test, the Monday Night Football duo were tested on every aspect of being a referee.

The former England internationals also sat down with a number of the Premier League’s top officials to give an insight into what it takes to referee in England’s top flight, analysing some key decisions from the season so far along the way.

And there’s also a reenactment of Mike Dean’s famous celebration after playing an advantage which allowed Tottenham to score in their 3-1 win over Aston Villa last season!

How did Neville and Carragher get on? This one line tells the story with former Liverpool defender Carragher saying to referee Neil Swarbrick: “I will never ever criticise you ever again!”

Watch a short taste of Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville being put through their paces by the Premier League referees by hitting play on the video above.

See how the pundits get on by watching The Referees - Onside with Neville & Carragher on Sky Sports on April 2 after Arsenal v Manchester City on Super Sunday.

Garmin help Tadić back to international stage

Show/hide article…

The playmaker suffered a broken nose during the last round of internationals and was ruled out of action for Saints until he returned in mid-December.

To aid his recovery, Tadić was handed a Garmin Vivosmart HR unit, which allowed Saints’ medical and sports science departments to keep a track of his heart rate when he was exercising away from Staplewood.

The Serbian will now be hoping to help his national side take another step towards the 2018 World Cup when they visit Georgia fir a qualifier tomorrow.

Speaking about the importance of the device, Head of Sports Science Alek Gross said: “We regularly monitor players’ heart rate and physical data. It is important that players have the optimal level of training.

“This device enables us to monitor heart rate at the training ground and also away from the training ground if players are training at another venue, so that we can keep track of their overall response to the training load."
