Late England Under-20s call for Sims

Show/hide article…

The Southampton youngster was originally on standby for the Three Lions squad, but has now been called up following an injury to Charlton’s Erzi Konsa Ngoyo.

Sims will link up with the team ahead of a busy seven-day period in France, during which they will play three games against Portugal (23rd March), France (25th March) and Senegal (28th March).

The mini-tournament will allow coach Paul Simpson time to prepare and pick his squad ahead of the summer’s FIFA Under-20 World Cup in South Korea.

Saints meet Premier League pledge

Show/hide article…

SAINTS are one of just seven Premier League clubs to meet a pledge made in August 2015 to provide a fully accessible toilet for disabled fans at their grounds within two years, according to learning disability charity Mencap.

Known as Changing Places toilets, they are larger than standard accessible facilities as they have additional equipment, including an adjustable changing bench, hoist, privacy screen and enough room for up to two carers.

Mencap believes they are essential for more than 250,000 British people with severe disabilities who need help going to the toilet, and they cost only £10,000, a day’s pay for many Premier League players.

With 13 clubs in the top flight still to install one, Mencap has produced a Changing Places toilet league table, which is topped by Liverpool with two registered facilities - registering the toilets is important so those who need them can find them.

Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Saints all have one registered facility, while Leicester City has one unregistered toilet and West Ham three, having inherited them with the London Stadium.

Bournemouth, Everton, Sunderland and Watford have promised to install one by August but Mencap is unaware of any plans to do so at Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Spurs, Stoke, Swansea or West Brom, with the three clubs promoted last season developing plans for 2018.

In a press release, disabled fan Luke Nash, who successfully campaigned for Leicester City to install a Changing Places toilet, said: "I don’t think all football clubs really think about how difficult it is for people like me to go to the toilet in their grounds.

"It’s often really tight and there isn’t space to be changed so you have to lie on the floor of a public bathroom, trying not to hit your head or think about the dirty floor you’re lying on.

“I’m a season-ticket holder and it’s good to know that I can go to matches whenever I want without needing to worry. I’m proud my team cares about all their fans.”

Mencap, which campaigns on behalf of 1.4 million with a learning disability in the UK, said it was focusing its efforts on getting Premier League clubs to meet the pledge but said several English Football League clubs, including Brighton, Chesterfield and Preston, have installed a facility, too.

Mencap’s activism manager Clare Lucas said: "It’s inexcusable for over half of the Premier League to be without fully accessible toilets for all disabled fans.

"Nobody wants to leave a game halfway through to go home just to use the toilet, but without a Changing Places facility the only other option is the degrading experience of being changed on what may be a dirty, unhygienic toilet floor. This is not a choice anyone should have to make.

"We are nearing the 2017 deadline for the accessibility promise that 17 of the current Premier League teams signed up to yet many are no closer to fulfilling that pledge than they were in 2015. For such big clubs there is simply no excuse.

“They have the space and the money to install Changing Places or at least temporary Changing Places solutions like Mobiloos’, for teams expecting to move stadiums. It’s time for these clubs to step up and support their disabled fans, as they support their team, so that everyone can enjoy watching their team play.”

A Premier League statement read: "Premier League clubs have embarked on a substantial programme of work to improve facilities for disabled fans and rapid progress is being made.

"The improvements undertaken are unprecedented in scope, scale and timing by any group of sports grounds or other entertainment venues in the UK.

"Clubs made a commitment to substantially improve disabled access in a range of areas by the start of season 2017/18 and the Premier League will make an assessment of the progress made at that point.

“We are conscious of the calls for Changing Places facilities to be built in stadia and these are being taken into account by the League and our clubs.”

Yet another Saints man gets an England call

Show/hide article…

YOUNGSTER Josh Sims has become the SEVENTH Saints man in the past week to be called up for England.

The 19-year-old, who turns 20 next Tuesday, has been drafted into the England Under-20s side, replacing Charlton’s Erzi Konsa Ngoyo, who is injured.

It is the first time Sims, who has previously played for England Under-17s and 18s, has been handed a call-up at this age group level.

It follows James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond’s maiden selections for the England senior side, making it four Saints’ men in the Three Lions team alongside Ryan Bertrand and Fraser Forster.

Both Redmond and Ward-Prowse made their national team debuts last night as second-half substitutes in the 1-0 defeat to world champions Germany in Dortmund.

Saints are also represented by Sam McQueen and Jack Stephens in the England Under-21s.

That means Sims becomes the seventh man to be given the national team nod, which will certainly come as a moment of pride for Saints, who pride themselves on bringing through youth players.

Sims will link up with the team ahead of a busy seven-day period in France, during which they will play three games against Portugal (today), France (25 March) and Senegal (28 March) as they prepare for the Under-20s World Cup in South Korea.

Revealed! Premier League teams caught offside the most, on average, per game

Show/hide article…

There is nothing more infuriating than seeing one of your players caught offside at a vital moment.

Even if the opposition defence has superbly executed a trap for your striker, it can leave supporters up in arms, gesticulating furiously.

Some teams, though, are more likely to incur the lifting of the assistant referee’s flag and see their attack cut short early.

But which Premier League teams, on average, are caught offside the most per game…

Every Premier League club’s most expensive transfer ranked

Show/hide article…

Everyone gets excited when their club splashes out on a big transfer, but not every big deal goes to plan.

Sometimes a player will come in and transform things, but all too often they fail to live up to expectations.

With club record transfers now more common than ever - 13 Premier League teams smashed their record in 2016 alone, with two more this January - splashing the cash doesn’t always return results.

Sportsmail has taken a look at every Premier League team’s record purchase, and ranked them…

The epitome of a bad transfer. Legendary in its awfulness. Still the high-watermark for inept transfer policy. Andy Carroll’s move to Liverpool was a perfect storm of getting things wrong.

Having scored 31 goals in 80 league games for Newcastle, Carroll was seen as a long-term England striker by Liverpool, but he managed just six Premier League goals in his two and a half years at the club, before being sold at a £20m loss, with injuries and poor form having destroyed his reputation.

The other part of the same deal that took Carroll to Liverpool, Torres is above the Englishman for two reasons; he had a proven record before the deal and he did, at least, score a crucial Champions League goal to redeem some of his reputation.

But for the most part he was an expensive flop, failing to score in his first 13 games, and eventually allowed to leave on a free after four unhappy years.

The first of the new crop to feature on this list, it may be harsh to judge Success on the back of just a few months in the English game. But when you break your transfer record for a player, you have to expect some return.

The Nigerian forward has started just once in the Premier League since signing, contributed only one goal and one assist, and though injuries have played their part, when he has been on the pitch he hasn’t looked a multi-million pound forward.

The oldest club record still standing in the Premier League, Afonso Alves was meant to come in and fire Middlesbrough to a new level, having banged in the goals in the Dutch League. But the Brazilian never made it work on Teesside.

His first goals came in a 2-2 draw against Manchester United, but it was all downhill from there, and both he and Boro were out of the Premier League 18 months later. His actual record - 10 goals in 42 games - is not as dreadful as some remember, but he was a huge disappointment.

When it comes to signing forwards, you expect a lot from a club that unearthed Michu for just £2m, and picked up Andre Ayew on a free transfer. So Borja Baston’s arrival at Swansea was cause for excitement - he scored 18 La Liga goals last season, and 23 the year before.

But it’s all gone wrong in the Premier League, with his only goal for Swansea so far coming in a 3-2 defeat at Arsenal. The fact that he can’t get in the team for a club battling relegation suggests this was not money well spent.

Leicester were always going to have a fight on their hands to even come close to replicating last year’s remarkable season, but signings like Islam Slimani and Ahmed Musa were supposed to bring them more firepower.

Instead, they are battling relegation, and despite two goals on his debut, Slimani has contributed far too little. Indeed, he hasn’t scored since December, and five Premier League goals is a poor return for £30m.

When Ibe signed for Bournemouth last summer, it was his chance to prove he was ready for first-team football in the Premier League - not just potential, but the real deal at the highest level.

With no goals, no assists, and barely any impact, the former Liverpool youngster has failed spectacularly to prove that. However, he is only 21, and there is still time for him, and Bournemouth, to show that this isn’t a bad deal.

It’s harsh to consider Bolasie a ‘bad’ signing, because in his first months at Everton he looked impressive, linking up well with Romelu Lukaku and, if not always producing end product, suggesting that he could get to another level.

But then injury struck, with cartilage damage and a ruptured ACL, the kind of issues some players never recover from. The upshot is that come the start of next season, Everton will have a 28-year-old winger, fighting for fitness, who has only scored one goal since signing for £30m. It’s hard to justify that as value for money.

The £14m Sunderland spent on Ndong was a lot for a 22-year-old who had played fewer than 50 league games in France, but the Gabonese midfielder has adapted to life in the Premier League reasonably quickly.

There has been some inconsistency, and he was recently dropped for not being ‘British’ enough, but given Sunderland’s shocking season so far, and perennial struggles, it was perhaps unrealistic to expect Ndong to transform them completely.

Imbula doesn’t just hold one transfer record - he was also Porto’s record signing back in 2015, but lasted just seven months at the Portuguese club before moving to Stoke.

But after a really good start, his progress has stalled, and the French midfielder has played just six minutes of Premier League football in 2017. Linked with a move back to his home country, Stoke would probably get back a large part of their outlay if he left, but you can’t help but feel he could still improve their team if given a chance.

A fringe player at Tottenham, but an England international, Mason looked a good signing when he joined Hull last summer - particularly given how depleted their squad was when he signed.

His form, like Hull’s, has been up and down, but he had been an important player until the sickening head injury he suffered against Chelsea, and is unlikely to play again this season. If Hull remain in the top flight, he will still be a crucial part of their squad next year.

Brilliant at Aston Villa, but misfit at Liverpool, Benteke ought to have been perfect for Crystal Palace, and they paid a huge transfer fee for him - more than twice their previous record outlay.

It’s not all been plain sailing, and only one league goal in 2017 is a worrying drop off, but Benteke is on course to become the club’s top Premier League scorer in a season since Andy Johnson in 2005. He was signed to bring goals, and he is, more or less, delivering on that count.

Robbie Brady may not be the best player to sign if you’re in a relegation battle - he has seen his club fall from Premier League to Championship in both of the last two seasons, first with Hull and then Norwich.

But Burnley, in 10th, were practically safe when he signed. They are now 13th, with four points from six games since Brady joined. He scored a stunning free kick to earn one of those points against Chelsea, but has not yet reached the heights of performance he was putting in for Norwich.

Right, bear with me. I know he’s not been brilliant, or at least, not as brilliant as you might hope given the exorbitant transfer fee, but that doesn’t mean he’s been bad. Pogba is not yet proving value for money, but he is contributing on the pitch, and, given his age, will only get better.

Four goals and three assists from midfield is a decent tally in a wholly dysfunctional Manchester United side, his relationship with Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been impressive, and if United were to sell him today, they’d probably get back the whole of their outlay.

A strange one this. Terrible in his first season, when he looked like a complete flop. Then the Argentine improved drastically, to the extent that last season he was one of Spurs’ leading players as they fought for the title.

Now, though, he’s almost entirely disappeared, what was thought to be a minor hip problem ruling him out since October. If he gets back on the pitch, he will once again be a key player. If not, Spurs can still enjoy the two good seasons he did have.

Given he was free to Swansea in 2015, £21m seems like crazy money to spend on the same player just a year later. But Ayew is a classy forward, and had proven his quality in the Premier League, so while the deal was not quite risk-free, it made sense.

And while the Ghanaian didn’t have a great first six months - hampered by injury and then absence - his three goals in four games since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations prove that he can, and will, be a very astute signing.

When Ozil signed for Arsenal they hadn’t won a major trophy in eight seasons. In his first two seasons, they had won two. Ozil lifted the Gunners to a different level, dictating their attacking play and becoming an assist machine.

There are lots of criticisms to be made of the German, many of them fair. But Arsenal are a shadow of themselves without him, and when he plays well, they play well. If he leaves this summer, after four years, those four seasons will represent excellent value for money.

I know, I know, it’s very early days, but Gabbiadini looks the real deal. The Italian striker has six goals in his first five Saints games, and could have had another one were it not for a linesman’s errant flag in the League Cup final.

It is a mark of how quickly he has settled that his recent injury caused real worry for Southampton, and if he keeps up the same form on his return he will quickly become a highly-coveted striker around the league.

West Brom have been the understated heroes of this Premier League season, quietly cruising towards a top-half finish and producing some superb performances. And Chadli has been a big part of that.

Unheralded at Tottenham, he has contributed goals and assists for Tony Pulis, as well as upping his work rate and earning a return to the Belgian national team with his impressive performances. In the modern marketplace, he looks a snip at £13m.

It is a mark of De Bruyne’s undoubted quality that, despite a massive price-tag, almost no-one would question that he was worth it. The Belgian has it all, a superb range of passing, a brilliant eye for spotting a team-mate, and even a decent goal return.

When he arrived he looked magnificent, and despite a serious knee injury last year he has bounced back to his best. If City are to grow into a major force under Pep Guardiola, he will surely be at the centre of the side.

Nathan Redmond sets sights on Euro 2017 final with England U21s

Show/hide article…

New England cap Nathan Redmond has declared he wants one final piece of glory with the Under 21s.

The Southampton winger is eyeing victory at Euro 2017 this summer in his last hurrah for the Young Lions.

Redmond made his senior debut as a second-half substitute in Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat in Germany after being handed his first call-up by boss Gareth Southgate.

His Under 21 colleagues face Germany in Wiesbaden on Friday before a trip to Denmark on Monday as they prepare for the 2017 European Championship in Poland.

It is Redmond’s last chance to represent the Young Lions as he will be too old after the tournament, and he wants to go out with a bang after suffering group stage elimination in 2015 and 2013.

‘Me and Nathaniel Chalobah have been to the Euros twice and we know what it’s like to lose twice. We want to get out of the group, push for the knockout stages and get to the final,’ said the 23-year-old, who has 34 Under-21 caps.

'We have got aspirations to win something. We know that feeling because we won the Toulon Tournament (last summer), and the feeling of winning something in an England shirt is rare and something you never forget.

'We want to take that experience. We know what it’s like to lose and win and now we have to take that into the summer.

‘Me and Prowsey (James Ward-Prowse) were talking about it and we weren’t really expecting this call-up and tournament (the World Cup qualifier with Lithuania on Sunday). We were just focused on the summer.’

Southampton team-mate and Under 21 captain Ward-Prowse also made his Three Lions debut in Dortmund but has echoed Redmond in his desire to play for Aidy Boothroyd’s side in the summer.

England face hosts Poland, holders Sweden and Slovakia in Kielce in June and Swansea defender Alfie Mawson believes their next two friendly games provide ideal preparation.

‘They are two good footballing sides, you only have to look at their senior teams and that’s bred through their younger sides,’ he told thefa.com, ahead of Friday’s Germany clash.

'It will be a tough test and that’s what we need. You don’t want to be playing easier games leading up to a tournament, you want to be testing yourself for what’s coming.

‘It’s not going to be an easy tournament, but we’ve got the ability and hopefully we can go all the way and lift the trophy.’

Pied: Important to come back stronger

Show/hide article…

Jérémy Pied says he will use the time out he has had to endure this season to help him bounce back better than ever.

The Frenchman has been sidelined since the first week of the current season after suffering a cruciate injury in training, a blow which came just weeks after he joined the club.

Pied hasn’t let the setback keep him down, though and is focusing on a stronger future with Saints.

“A lot of people have said this, but there is no good time to have this injury in your career. After my contract with Southampton it was a bad moment,” he highlighted.

“I feel very strong – I hope! It was important. I didn’t want to come back too quickly. The most important thing is to come back stronger, so I feel good. I feel good in my knee, good in my body, and this is the most important.

“I feel good, so I am ready to play, but I need some training of course with more intensity. Then, after, I am ready to play.”

Pied has been guided back to fitness by the work of Southampton’s medical staff, and he praised their efforts for helping him to make a smooth recovery.

“They were very important for me, because it was a long time,” he explained. “I stayed here. I didn’t travel to a rehabilitation centre in another country, for example.

“I stayed with them, and they were very focused on the work with me, step by step and day by day. It was very, very good – and very long! I really want to thank them for all the work they’ve carried out to this point. It’s thanks to them that I’ve managed to get back out on the pitch so quickly.

“I have tried to stay quiet (about his return), because this is the risk to be excited to play. I try to stay quiet and give my best on the pitch, step by step, and now I feel very good.”

The full back also added his gratitude for the support he has received from the fans during his time out.

“That’s very important,” he said. “That’s why I put out some videos, because some fans ask me when I will come back, so I tried to put some videos to show where I was in my rehabilitation. I want to thank them for their messages and support on social media.”
