Smallbone pens first professional deal

Show/hide article…

Smallbone, who joined the club at the age of eight after being spotted playing for his local side, has penned a deal that will keep him at the club until June 2019.

The 17-year-old netted a stunning winner in this season’s FA Youth Cup clash at Old Trafford and, as a lifelong fan, he is delighted to be continuing his development at a club renowned for helping young players progress.

He said: “It feels amazing to sign at Southampton, especially after all the years I’ve been here so it’s like a dream come true for me.

“Doubt never crossed my mind. It’s been a great club to me over the years and I’m happy that they’ve shown faith in me to offer me a professional contract.

“It came about very easily and they have rewarded me for my performances this year which I’m very grateful for.”

He has made 19 appearances this season in the Under-18 Premier League, scoring five goals in the process and Smallbone outlined his ambitions for the future at a place where there is a clear pathway.

“Short-term it’s just to keep playing regularly for the Under-18s and hopefully keep progressing into the Under-23s as I have done.

“Looking towards next year to be a regular member of the Under-23s and try to train with the first-team.

“The teams are similar throughout the club to play the same way and it helps physically as well.

“The pathway is there if you play well for the Under-23s you get rewarded and it’s obviously a big ambition of mine to make a first-team debut.”

Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini impressing Puel with impact

Show/hide article…

In 163 minutes of football for Southampton since arriving for £14million on transfer deadline day, Manolo Gabbiadini has scored three times in two appearances - more than 10 per cent of the club’s Premier League goals this season.

Add to that goals in his final two appearances for Napoli and you have to go back to the start of December to find a game in which Gabbiadini did not score - a 56-minute Champions League appearance against Benfica.

So the last thing the Italian wanted after his brace against Sunderland earlier this month was the enforced two week’s rest that has followed.

But with Southampton already out of the FA Cup, they have had plenty of time to focus on Sunday’s League Cup final against Manchester United.

Gabbiadini is expected to lead the attack in what is their first cup final appearance since 1979, when they lost 3-2 to Nottingham Forest in the same competition.

And Saints manager Claude Puel is delighted with Gabbiadini’s instant impact, which has seen him become the first Southampton player to score in his opening two Premier League games since Henri Camara in 2005.

‘It’s a very good start,’ said Puel.

‘Manolo showed he is a technical player who can work between the lines. He gets behind defenders and has real quality.’

Gabbiadini is also capable of playing out wide but if his displays as a sole striker in front of Dusan Tadic are anything to go by, Puel may have already found the Italian’s best position.

In Southampton’s last game, a 4-0 win over Sunderland, they abandoned the 4-3-3 and reverted to last season’s 4-2-3-1 system in which Tadic proved a potent force behind Graziano Pelle, the Italian striker who left for Shangdong Luneng last summer.

The switch helped release Tadic, who set up Gabbiadini’s second goal against Sunderland, a delightful drag back on to his right foot and quick shot.

It also helped check an alarming run that had seen the Saints lost six out of seven league games.

‘He’s a very good player and a very good guy,’ said Tadic after the game. ‘He wants to learn and he’s come and started well.’

‘Sometimes football language is the same and it’s important to speak between each other to see what he likes. He will adapt better and better.’

PHOTOS: Former Saints player’s car targeted after accusations made about love life

Show/hide article…

A former Saints player’s car has been targeted with graffiti after accusations were made about his love life, according to national newspaper reports.

Defender Steven Caulker, who spent last season on loan at St Mary’s from QPR, found his £100,000 Range Rover had been spray painted with the words ‘cheater’, ‘heart breaker’ and ‘rot in hell’ after the accusations surfaced.

According to the reports, Caulker, 25, was feared to have been the victim of a hack after intimate photos and videos of a young woman were posted on his Instagram account.

It is also reported that a Facebook message in which Caulker is branded a ‘dirty cheat’, along with a picture of a pig, was posted from the footballer’s account.

It has been claimed that the pictures and videos are linked to British-born, US-based fitness model, Harriet Kauffman - there is no suggestion she made the posts.

There is no suggestion that Caulker has cheated on his partner, nor whether he has become the victim of a prank.

Grub’s up! Wayne Shaw wasn’t the first sportsman to give in to temptation

Show/hide article…

Wayne Shaw may have resigned following his pie-eating antics during non-league Sutton’s televised FA Cup clash with Arsenal.

But the 46-year-old goalkeeper and former Totton area ice cream seller is not the first athlete to have have satisfied their hunger, or thirst, before the end of play.

Here the Daily Echo looks at five other examples were sports stars could not wait to tuck in or drink up.

Sweet-toothed cricketers have courted controversy for their love of candy over the years. Most recently South Africa captain Faf du Plessis was found guilty of ball-tampering after footage showed him applying shine while he appeared to suck on a mint during a Test against Australia. But that cannot beat the hullabaloo that emerged during a 2007 meeting between England and India when the tourists’ batsman Zaheer Khan accused Michael Vaughan’s men of throwing jelly beans while he occupied the crease. Vaughan apologised for “the prank” - though denied the confectionery was actually thrown at Zaheer, who had the last laugh with a five-for in India’s win at Trent Bridge.

Back in the era when Ferdinand liked to prank his international team-mates for our viewing pleasure, he was also caught scoffing on what looked like a jaffa cake midway through a game. There is probably more value in those little treats than Shaw’s pastry given their slow-release sugars, though the sight of an England international stuffing his face at a break in play is still a rarity. Non-league defender Gareth Roberts did the same thing a few years ago in the FA Cup against Barnsley before passing the packet around. Not that it provided much inspiration as Chester were beaten 3-0 in their second-round replay.

While a jaffa cake may provide a short sugar rush, it is nothing compared to the energy Willis will have accrued from the can of fizzy drink and chocolate bar he consumed during a Challenger tournament in 2014. Two years before he met Roger Federer on Wimbledon’s Centre Court, a more rotund Willis was seen with the tuck-shop items at the change of ends in a victory over Tennys Sandgren. It earned him the nickname ‘Cartman’, one the affable Briton fully embraced, before he slimmed down to become the lowest-ranked qualifier to reach the second round of a grand slam in 27 years at Wimbledon last summer.

Before his fellow non-league footballer hit the headlines for devouring a pie, Corby Town’s Jason Lee became an internet sensation when he was snapped supping from a pint during a celebration after team-mate Ben Milnes scored in a 1-0 win over Mickleover Sports. Lee explained to BBC Sport: “I didn’t want the spilled pint to go to waste so I just thought I’d have a cheeky sip.” The only shock for Lee was that it was cider, rather than lager, in the cup, not that either are likely to be recommended by any dieticians. Lee added: “With about 10 or 15 minutes to go I got severe heartburn. Although it tasted nice and refreshing at the time, I just wouldn’t recommend it for elite athletes.”

Numerous NFL players have a history of chowing or chugging down food and drink during contests, with British-born running back Jay Ajayi a fan of swigging pickle juice in college to prevent cramping, while Terrell Owens once threw popcorn in his face to celebrate a touchdown… But no player has made more of their in-match snack love than ex-Seattle Seahawks running back Lynch. His mum would give him Skittles, or “power pellets” as she called them, in high school and when Lynch was found eating them on the sideline his association with the sweet grew, spawning ‘Skittle Shower’ celebrations after touchdowns and a sponsorship deal that he is still reaping the rewards of in retirement.

Mourinho: Why Luke Shaw is my fourth choice left back

Show/hide article…

Jose Mourinho says Luke Shaw needs to raise his game unless he wants to remain Manchester United’s fourth-choice left-back.

Having missed the majority of last season following a horrific double leg break, the 21-year-old’s comeback campaign has been disrupted by niggles and an inability to win over his manager.

Despite being fit since mid-January, the former Saints starlet has only appeared in the FA Cup fourth round win against Wigan - and was left out of the next four squads.

The left-back was an unused substitute at Blackburn on Sunday and conspicuous by his absence in France, having been overlooked for the 20-man squad despite training on the eve of the game.

Shaw’s omission for the Europa League last-32 second leg at St Etienne raises further questions about the England international’s future, but Mourinho pointed to Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s rise as inspiration.

“He [Shaw] stayed behind in Manchester because I am playing with Daley Blind, with Marcos Rojo, with Matteo Darmian and all of them are playing the way I like a full-back to play,” the United boss said.

"Luke has to wait for his chance, he has to work better and better, knowing that I give nothing for free.

"When I give something to the players, it’s expensive for them. It’s not cheap, it’s expensive.

"They have to work really hard every day. Really hard every day. They have to play well, so he has to wait.

“In this moment, he is behind the others.”

Asked if he is getting towards the left-back he wants, Mourinho said: "Potentially he has many things that I like.

"But one thing is potential, another thing is on the pitch to express all the qualities that I like a player to express.

“And he has to keep working, like Mkhitaryan did for a long time.”

Cedric Soares backs Southampton to stun Man United in EFL Cup final

Show/hide article…

Right back Cedric was part of the Portugal side which stunned France in their own back yard last summer to be crowned European champions. And the 25-year-old is targeting another against the odds win when Saints take on United in Sunday’s EFL Cup final. “Nobody expected Portugal to do it in the Euros and here for Saints is the same,” he said. “Nobody expected Saints to come to this stage, to Wembley. We need to enjoy it, but we must get the win because we don’t always get these moments in life.

“We just need to do everything to achieve the win because in 10 years’ time you want to look back and remember what a great game we had there. “What a moment it was and you’d pay anything to come back and do everything again. “This is the same feeling for Portugal. Of course, the Euros is a bigger competition, but still this is a trophy and we will fight for it.” Saints beat Liverpool in the semi-finals to book a place in their first League Cup final since 1979.

Cedric added: “It’s a final and, like I used to say, in a final you don’t need to play, you just need to win. This is our mentality and how we are going to play this game. “We’ve achieved this final and we deserve it as well and now we need to just enjoy the game and try for the win because now everything can happen. “It is Manchester and we need to respect them, but they also know it’s a final and anything can happen. We believe we can win, but will respect our opponent and try our best to get the win.”
