EFL Cup final: Man Utd’s Ander Herrera and Southampton’s Oriol Romeu compared

Show/hide article…

There will be a host of star names on display at Wembley when Manchester United and Southampton meet in the EFL Cup final on Sunday - but deep-lying midfielders Ander Herrera and Southampton’s Oriol Romeu will play pivotal roles for their teams.

N’Golo Kante was integral to Leicester’s title success last season and has helped Chelsea to the top of the table this time around, and as a result the defensive midfielder role has become a coveted position for many clubs this season, not least this year’s EFL Cup finalists.

Herrera and Romeu have emerged as key men in this campaign and rank among the top midfielders for defensive stats in the Premier League.

But although they play in the same position, they have contrasting styles. We take a look at how they compare…

Manchester United’s Herrera enjoyed limited success in an advanced position under Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, but has excelled under Jose Mourinho in a deep-lying playmaker role.

In fact, Herrera has won more duels and made more interceptions and passes than Kante this season, despite playing four fewer games - and makes almost as many tackles as the Chelsea midfielder per game.

The 27-year-old has also made 1,028 passes in the opposition half - one of only five Premier League midfielders to make it into four digits this term.

In other words, the stats suggest Herrera not only excels at his defensive duties but also uses his ball-playing skills further up the field to contribute to attacks.

Former Barcelona youngster Romeu failed to make an impact during a four-year spell at Chelsea and joined Southampton in the summer for £5m to replace Tottenham-bound defensive midfielder Victor Wanyama.

Since then, he’s thrived on the south coast. Romeu has matched Kante for tackles and interceptions per game this term - and won more duels, aerials and recoveries.

Unlike Herrera, the 25-year-old plays a deeper role and primarily shields the defence. With over 46 per cent of his passes being made in his own half, much of Romeu’s involvement is between his own box and the halfway line.

Bolstered by Romeu’s midfield protection, Southampton have not conceded a single goal in the EFL Cup this season and have progressed through the competition with slim winning margins and clean sheets.

It’s a shield United will need to break through on Sunday, while Southampton will also look to breach a rearguard who have only conceded 21 league goals this season.

How Le Tiss changed Manchester United history forever

Show/hide article…

MANCHESTER United Football Club owe a huge debt of gratitude to Saints for handing them a League Cup drubbing over 30 years ago.

But it took them a while to realise it!

Saints have only ever beaten the Red Devils in the League Cup on one occasion.

That was a 4-1 third round replay success at The Dell in early November, 1986.

An 18-year-old Matt Le Tissier jumped off the bench to score twice as Ron Atkinson’s injury-hit United conceded three goals in the last 20 minutes.

Within 48 hours, Atkinson - United’s boss since the summer of 1981 - had been sacked.

And the rest, as they like to say in articles such as this, is history.

Of course it is impossible to say whether Atkinson would have kept his job for a year or so longer had United won at The Dell.

If he had done, would Ferguson have ever racked up at Old Trafford? That’s also totally hypothetical.

What we do know is that storm clouds had been forming over Atkinson’s head ever since the start of the 1986/87 season - his sixth at the club.

At the time of their League Cup drubbing, United had won only four times in 13 First Division games - including a 5-1 thrashing of Chris Nicholl’s Saints at Old Trafford - and were rooted in the bottom four.

Twelve months earlier, at the start of the 1985/86 season, Atkinson had masterminded a run of 10 straight wins from the start of the season.

After 15 matches United were still unbeaten, but could not maintain such form and were eventually overtaken by Liverpool. United’s wait for a first top flight title since 1967 went on …

The 1985/86 season was Atkinson’s fifth at Old Trafford and he had finished in the top four in all of them. In addition, he had twice won the FA Cup - in 1983 and 1985 - and reached the 1983 League Cup final and the 1984 European Cup Winners Cup semi final.

As a result, he was statistically the club’s most successful manager since the legendary Sir Matt Busby.

All that counted for nothing on the evening of Tuesday November 4, 1986, at The Dell.

Following a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford the previous week - in front of a crowd of only 23,639 - the odds favoured Saints on home soil.

United, for a start, hadn’t won an away league game all season, and Atkinson was wrestling with some major injuries.

Key midfielders Bryan Robson and Gordon Strachan were both ruled out with hamstring injuries, while Danish defender John Sivebaek was also sidelined.

Utility player Colin Gibson, though, was welcomed back after being absent since mid August through injury.

Nicholl, though, was also reporting injury worries.

There were pre-match doubts over top scorer Colin Clarke (thigh), winger Danny Wallace (ankle) and left back Mark Dennis (knee).

As it turned out, all three played after receiving painkilling injections.

Atkinson’s injury situation went from bad to worse, though, with both Norman Whiteside and Gibson having to go off in the first half.

Nicky Wood, a rookie teenager, was brought on for Whiteside - an indication of how few players Atkinson had available to him (remember, these were pre-squad rotation days - Nicholl and Atkinson would never have contemplated fielding fringe players or untried youngsters just to give them some game-time).

Whiteside and Gibson had both gone off injured by the time George Lawrence fired Saints into the lead two minutes before half-time.

Lawrence received a pass from Jimmy Case, cut inside his marker, and fired a stunning 25-yard shot past a startled Chris Turner.

Saints had to wait until 19 minutes from time to double their lead, Clarke knocking down a Glenn Cockerill header for Wallace to half-volley in.

That was virtually his last contribution to the evening, as he hobbled off due to his long-standing ankle complaint.

In his place came Le Tissier, who within minutes had netted the first of his 161 Saints goals.

With United defenders appealing for offside, Le Tissier collected a pass from Clarke before sublimely chipping a stranded Turner from outside the penalty area.

He didn’t have to wait long for his second goal, rising impressively to head in a Case corner.

United replied late on when Peter Davenport latched onto a poor Gerry Forrest back pass to make it 4-1.

The damage had long been done, however.

A dejected Atkinson told Echo reporter Bob Brunskell afterwards: "The longer the game went on, the more our injury problems took their toll.

“We had no answer to Jimmy Case, who controlled the show from midfield, and we couldn’t pin down George Lawrence either. He started to run riot.”

Atkinson’s injury worries obviously won him little boardroom support, where phone calls to east coast of Scotland were no doubt preparing to be made.

On Thursday November 6, 1986, he was sacked.

An era was over, and a dynasty was about to be created.

Ferguson’s impact, famously, was not anything resembling immediate.

He lost his first game in charge, 2-0 at Oxford United - yes, Oxford in the First Division, how the footballing landscape has changed in three decades - and won only one of his first six league matches. United ended up 11th - their lowest league position since Dave Sexton’s side had finished eighth in 1980-81 (leading to Atkinson’s arrival, though United had been keen to interview Saints boss Lawrie McMenemy too).

United’s fans were also slow to turn up in their numbers to back Ferguson. For an end of season league game against Wimbledon in his first season, only 31,686 bothered to turn up at Old Trafford - over 43,000 fewer than regularly pack the stadium these days.

Ferguson’s first few years, in fact, were nowhere near as impressive as Atkinson’s had been. Big Ron won the FA Cup in his second season and reached another cup final the same term.

Ferguson didn’t get anywhere near a cup until winning the FA Cup in May 1990 - virtually three and a half years after his arrival at Old Trafford.

In that time, United actually finished 1988/89 in 11th place - four places below Coventry, two below QPR and one below Millwall.

If you thought that was bad, the following season United were even worse - finishing 13th (below Saints, Wimbledon, QPR and Coventry).

Compare that to life in the modern-day Premier League fishbowl spotlight, where Louis Van Gaal received the sack for finishing fifth and winning the FA Cup!!!

What strange times we now live in, compared to the ones some of us grew up in …

Forster would rather not repeat his ‘La Gran Muralla’ performance at Wembley

Show/hide article…

FRASER Forster admits he’d rather not repeat his ‘La Gran Muralla’ performance at Wembley in the League Cup final against Manchester United.

In November 2012, the Saints goalkeeper delivered one of his most iconic displays as he helped Celtic to an epic 2-1 win over La Liga giants Barcelona in the Champions League.

As a result, the Spanish press labelled him the ‘La Gran Muralla’ - The Great Wall.

Now, Forster revealed that while he’d like to be Saints’ cup final hero, he’d rather not build another Great Wall.

That night Forster denied the Catalan giants’ finest attackers in Lionel Messi, Alexis Sanchez, Andres Iniesta, David Villa … the list of superstars goes on.

Messi did score in the 90th minute, but Forster was nevertheless the hero of the night.

His superhuman performance allowed former Saint Victor Wanyama and Tony Watt to score at the other end to gift Celtic an unforgettable night.

Forster was a marvel and the Spanish press could do little but to give him a name befitting of his display.

It’s rare a goalkeeper is rewarded with such praise.

But such is the trade goalkeepers deal in that, often, the busier they are the more vulnerable and under pressure their team is.

“You want to go out and play well, but you don’t want to over think things,” he explains. “After all you can only do what you can do in a game.

“It would be nice to play like I did that night, but at the same time it would be good to go out and not touch the ball for 90 minutes and win 1-0.

“However the game goes, you’ve just got to go out and give it everything. If you do that you won’t have any regrets.”

Saints have certainly had no regrets so far in their League Cup campaign. They didn’t concede a goal in their five games on the way to Wembley.

The 28-year-old made a spectacular save at Liverpool to somehow claw the ball from the goal-line, but apart from that Saints’ goal has remained relatively untroubled.

Even without the inspirational Virgil van Dijk in the team, Saints remained solid during their famous night at Anfield.

Forster acknowledges centre-backs Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida for their work that night.

“Everyone knows how good Virgil is and, of course, his injury is disappointing for everyone,” he said. “But ever since Jack has come in the team he’s done really well.

“The way him and Maya performed at Liverpool was fantastic and we were on the back foot for the best part of 90 minutes.

“They defended really well and as a partnership they get on really well and work very hard.

“They’ve been fantastic ever since they’ve been together and with Berty (Ryan Bertrand) and Cedric (Soares) as well that back four is strong.”

The towering 6ft7in keeper will be able to call upon the “unique pressure” he felt while playing for Celtic when Saints go for their first major silverware in 41 years on Sunday.

Forster grew up in the North East where he played for famous youth team Wallsend Boys Club, which has produced a long list of the region’s finest players, and then Newcastle United.

He was shipped out from St James’ Park on loan to Stockport, Bristol Rovers and Norwich City, before two season-long stays at Celtic eventually saw manager Neil Lennon sign him permanently in 2012.

At the Bhoys Forster won the Scottish Premiership in three consecutive seasons, as well as the Scottish Cup in 2010/11 and 2012/13.

“When you’re at Celtic there’s a real unique pressure on you,” he said. “It’s a good pressure.

“Whether it’s a league game, cup or Europe you’re expected to win and dropping points isn’t really acceptable.

“That’s a fantastic pressure to have on yourself.

“You go to the final and have that pressure on you. You’re expected to win it. But you get used to it at Celtic. It’s a huge club and that’s what’s demanded of you.

“When you’re battling with Rangers in the league and they’ve played at lunchtime and won, you know you’ve got to go out and win, or if you’re drawing 1-1 in the final minutes you know you’ve got to go and try and win.

“It’s a fantastic pressure and that’s what it’s all about.

“It’s hard to explain the pressure in Scotland unless you’ve been a player and played up there yourself.

“Down here it’s just a fantastic achievement to get to the final and to be playing Manchester United. We will go in as underdogs.”

After a hugely successful time at Celtic, Saints splashed £10m on the England international in the summer of 2014.

It didn’t take long for Forster to realise that St Mary’s was home.

“As soon as you step through the door you realise what a special club it is, it’s just got a special feeling to it that not many clubs have,” he said.

“When you meet the chairman and the owner you realise how ambitious they are and how much they want to keep the club moving forward.

“I’m proud to be involved in it. I can’t thank them enough for putting that faith in me and bringing me to the club to be part of something special.”

Forster had to battle back from a ruptured patellar tendon in his first season at the club, eventually defying medical predictions, that said he’d be out for a year, by coming back after just ten months.

Soon after his comeback in January last year he completed his finest performance to date in a Saints shirt with a series of world class saves in a 0-0 draw at Arsenal .

He is now ready to stop another one of English football’s big guns and help write another incredible chapter in Saints’ recent history.

“It would mean the world to me [to win the cup],” he said. “In fact, it would mean the world to me and everyone.

“We’ve put in a lot of hard work and we’ve obviously been a on a great cup run.

“It just shows how far the club has come over the past seven years. It’s going to be a real reward.

“We know Manchester United are on a great run and have fantastic quality within their team, but for us we can look back at the last couple of years and see the results we got against the big teams.

“We’ve done really well and there’s no reason we can’t be confident and go into it full of belief.”

Certainly, having not conceded yet in the League Cup, there is a lot of belief in defence.

“It’s a great achievement for the team [not to concede],” he said. “It’s credit to the whole team, how we’ve defended set pieces, how we’ve defended front to back.

“It’s something we can be very proud of and we need to keep it going.”

Forster did not feel under pressure when he faced Barcelona, and he won’t feel under pressure taking on Ibrahimovic, Pogba and Rooney.

He said: “There’s no pressure on those games because that’s what you dreamed of as a kid, to go out and play against the best players in the world.

“In those games you’re not thinking. There’s no time.

“To go and do that in a cup would be something special, but there’s no pressure on you because that’s why every kid gets into football – to play in those games.

“On a night like that against Barcelona everything went my way.”

Bus operator offers free travel for Saints fans

Show/hide article…

SAINTS fans will have the run of the city on Sunday, with a bus operator offering free travel – as long as they’re sporting the shirt.

Southampton-based bus operator Bluestar is planning to turn its buses red by providing free transport for fans.

It comes as Saints face Manchester United in the League Cup final on Sunday, in their first major final in 14 years.

Bluestar managing director Andrew Wickham said: “That’s why we want to show our support and let fans travel for free on this special day.

“Anyone boarding our buses in Southampton while wearing a Saints shirt at any time on Sunday will be granted free travel. We think it’s a great way to encourage people to leave their cars at home – particularly as there may be some celebrating involved.

“Our team is looking forward to what should be a wonderful atmosphere across Southampton – and we’re hoping Saints bring home the cup. We march on!”

The Saints are aiming to secure their first major piece of silverware since 1976 when they won the FA Cup.

General manager of Bluestar Richard Tyldsley insisted that it was all about giving back to the city, as well as helping people take part in the atmosphere of the day.

Richard said: “Our buses run through some of the most densely populated parts of Southampton and we want to give back to those people and the city.

“It’s not every day an occasion like this comes on the calendar and we wanted to show our support. A lot of people we serve are massive Saints fans, as well as our drivers.”

The city was sent into a fan frenzy when Shane Long’s stoppage time strike secured an aggregate 2-0 win over Liverpool in the semi-final last month.

Tens of thousands of fans will make the trip to Wembley, with Richard hoping that for those who weren’t fortunate enough to get hold of a ticket, free travel around the city can help fans stick together around television screens.

Richard said: “If people use our service to watch together in the pub or at home with family, it will make all of this worthwhile.”

#MarchToWembley: Arsenal 0-2 Saints

Show/hide article…

Southampton secured progress to the semi-finals of the League Cup for the first time in 30 years, thanks to a fantastic 2-0 win against Arsenal in north London.

Jordy Clasie’s first goal for the club and Ryan Bertrand’s first of the season sealed a memorable win for Saints, as they knocked Arsenal out of the competition for the second time in three seasons.

Both goals arrived in the first half at Emirates Stadium, as Saints showed a decisive clinical edge against the Gunners.

IT FEELS AMAZING AND I HAD TO WAIT A LONG TIME FOR IT. I’M HAPPY FOR THE TEAM THAT I SCORED TODAY AND IT WAS AN IMPORTANT GOAL AS WELL.

I’VE BEEN IN THAT SITUATION A FEW TIMES IN THE PAST AND I JUST MADE SURE THE FIRST TOUCH WAS CORRECT AND, AS SOON AS THAT WAS HIT, IT WAS GOING TO BE A GOAL.

IT WAS A STRONG GAME, WITH GOOD SOLIDARITY. WE MOVED THE TEAM AT THE START WITH DIFFERENT PLAYERS AND THE ANSWER FROM THEM WAS FANTASTIC.
