Butterfield: We want to see consistency

Show/hide article…

The Seagulls are set to visit Staplewood Campus in the Under-18 Premier League, and assistant manager Butterfield is keen to see a repeat of the display that earned Saints a 2-0 victory over Swansea City in their previous outing.

“We want to see a consistency in individual performances,” he started.

“If we can perform at the levels we did against Swansea, both collectively and individually, then that’s all we can ask of them.

“Hopefully the positives of that result will also help to build confidence, which is something we can now take into Wednesday.”

With the rearrangement of this fixture, Saints youngsters face a sharp turnaround following Saturday’s victory over Swansea.

Though Butterfield believes the experience will be beneficial for his players.

“The reality is that games come thick and fast,” he continued.

“Especially at first team level, so it will be good for their development again to experience that so early on.

“I am sure the medical team will look after the lads properly and we will get them in and prepare right from Monday for the game.”

PHOTOS: Former Saints player’s car targeted after accusations made about love life

Show/hide article…

A former Saints player’s car has been targeted with graffiti after accusations were made about his love life, according to national newspaper reports.

Defender Steven Caulker, who spent last season on loan at St Mary’s from QPR, found his £100,000 Range Rover had been spray painted with the words ‘cheater’, ‘heart breaker’ and ‘rot in hell’ after the accusations surfaced.

According to the reports, Caulker, 25, was feared to have been the victim of a hack after intimate photos and videos of a young woman were posted on his Instagram account.

It is also reported that a Facebook message in which Caulker is branded a ‘dirty cheat’, along with a picture of a pig, was posted from the footballer’s account.

It has been claimed that the pictures and videos are linked to British-born, US-based fitness model, Harriet Kauffman - there is no suggestion she made the posts.

There is no suggestion that Caulker has cheated on his partner, nor whether he has become the victim of a prank.

Rooney makes surprise return to training ahead of Saints clash

Show/hide article…

Wayne Rooney trained with his Manchester United colleagues on Tuesday morning ahead of their trip to France for their Europa League clash with St Etienne and the League Cup final against Saints on Sunday.

United’s all-time record scorer has missed the past four games but participated in a session prior to the flight for the game with St Etienne, who were defeated 3-0 in the reverse fixture last week.

A muscular injury has sidelined Rooney for a length of time in which his team have pieced together a four-game winning streak.

Only midfielder Ander Herrera, who cannot play in the competition due to suspension, and birthday boy Phil Jones, who has been carrying a foot injury, were missing as Jose Mourinho watched on at the Aon Training Complex.

For the section open to the media, Rooney warmed up in a separate group along with nine other colleagues - Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Michael Carrick, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo, Matteo Darmian, Ashley Young and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, all of whom will be hoping to get an opportunity to impress on Wednesday.

Le Tissier expects another cup classic

Show/hide article…

From the pinnacle of an FA Cup Final win through to last season’s late triumph at Old Trafford, Southampton have had some memorable games with Manchester United, and Matt Le Tissier expects another classic encounter this weekend.

Sunday’s EFL Cup Final pits Saints against José Mourinho’s side at Wembley Stadium for the first major domestic trophy of the season.

Claude Puel’s men have beaten Premier League opponents in each round of the competition without conceding a goal in that time too, but Le Tissier expects this to be the biggest test of the lot.

“It’s going to be tough,” he said. “United are probably in the best form in the Premier League with 16 games unbeaten I think, so we’re going to go in as the underdogs - as we did in 1976 - and hopefully we can come out with the same result.

“You think of the 1976 final immediately, also the 6-3 in the mid-90s, the 3-1 when they changed shirts at half time quite famously. There’s been some cracking fixtures with them over the years, and hopefully we can make another great memory of beating them again.”

One of the other famous ties against United came in this competition during 1986 when Le Tissier scored his first goals for Southampton in a 4-1 success which had famous consequences.

“It was in November 1986 which seems a long time ago now,” he recalled. “I came on as a sub and I think we were already 2-0 up when I came on and I scored a couple. Ron Atkinson was gone two days later as United parted company with his services and in came Sir Alex Ferguson as manager for the most successful period in their history, so United fans should be thanking me, really!”

Back on the current cup run, Le Tissier has been a keen spectator throughout this competition, and would love nothing more than to see Saints completing the job in style on Sunday.

He said: “Having been at all of the rounds the whole way through and not seen a goal conceded so far, it’s been quite a run, and I’m looking forward to that run continuing on Sunday and then being able to gloat live on Sky Sports when we win it.

“They’ve had to play Premier League teams in every round and gone away to win at both Arsenal and Liverpool, which is a pretty decent run through to the final. It’s been no easy run and they’ve earned every single step of the way, so hopefully they can go and finish it off.”

Le Tissier: Believe you can win it

Show/hide article…

Matt Le Tissier says Southampton have to believe that they can win the EFL Cup as they complete their final preparations ahead of Sunday’s showdown.

Saints make their first return to the final of this competition since 1979, and Le Tissier, who played at Wembley in the Zenith Data Systems Cup Final with Southampton in 1992, says they’ll be plenty of anticipation from players and supporters alike ahead of the big day.

Le Tissier has taken inspiration from previous trips to the home of football, but also believes that Saints have an advantage from having a break between games, unlike their opponents.

“When you get to a Wembley final, it doesn’t matter who the opposition are, you all believe that you can go and win it,” he said.

“It’s going to be difficult, yes, but if you ask any Saints fan, I think even the most pessimistic ones will still give us a chance of going out there and lifting that trophy.

“United are on a decent run but we’ve got some very good players in our side who can beat any team on any given day as they’ve proved going to Arsenal and going to Liverpool, so we’re not without a chance in this.

“I think at this time of year I would have probably preferred to have had the two-week rest leading up to it,” Le Tissier added.

“United will have had to play three games in the space that we’ve had none, so I think that could be a little bit of an advantage. Not all of their players are going to play in all of those games, but I think the freshness going into it should help us out a little bit.”

As a player, Le Tissier appeared at Wembley on a handful of occasions for the national team, and says the feeling of going there is still special for anyone.

“It’s just tremendous excitement, knowing you’ve got the chance to play at the home of English football,” he said. “As a kid growing up you just dream of playing at Wembley and those players will be feeling the butterflies in the stomach from here on in.

“To the players I’d say that this is a chance for you to go down in the history of the football club. We’ve had one team that’s won a major competition in our history and those boys some 40-plus years on are still hailed as heroes amongst the fans, and you boys have the chance to have that again. Imagine in 40 years’ time from now people still idolising you because you won a trophy for this fantastic football club.”

More Manchester United misery for ex-Saint Luke Shaw ahead of Wembley final

Show/hide article…

Luke Shaw has again been left out of Manchester United’s squad for the Europa League clash at St Etienne - raising more questions about the left-back’s Old Trafford future.

The 21-year-old former Saints starlet has been overlooked for the squad heading to France for the last-32 second leg, with captain Wayne Rooney and Matteo Darmian also missing from the 20-man group despite training this morning.

Rooney suggested on social media that today was his first session since injury and Darmian played at Blackburn on Sunday, yet Shaw has made just one appearance since November 30.

The left-back, having overcome niggling issues on the comeback from a horrific double leg break, has been fit since mid-January but only appeared in the FA Cup fourth-round win against Wigan.

Left out of United’s subsequent four squads, Shaw returned to the bench at Blackburn in Sunday’s FA Cup fifth-round tie.

Shaw looked likely to get a chance to impress at St Etienne - where United will boast a 3-0 lead from the first leg - yet the defender has surprisingly been left out of the squad for the Europa League encounter.

Mourinho is sure to face questions about the England international’s future and captain Rooney at a press conference at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.

Phil Jones misses the match through injury and Ander Herrera serves a one-match suspension.

The stats you need to know ahead of Wembley

Show/hide article…

SAINTS and Manchester United meet in the EFL Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

Here, the Daily Echo looks at some facts and figures surrounding the showpiece occasion.

Saints have defeated Premier League opposition at each stage since their participation in this season’s competition began in the third round. They overcame Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Arsenal, and then Liverpool over the semi-final’s two legs. They are the first team to ever reach the final beating top flight opposition in every round.

United only avoided other top-flight teams in the third round, when they visited League One Northampton. Thereafter, they eliminated Manchester City, West Ham, and in the semi-finals Hull.

This will be the 56th League Cup final. The first, in 1960/61, was won by Aston Villa over two legs against Rotherham Twenty-three different teams have won the League Cup. Liverpool have the most wins with eight. United have lifted the cup on four occasions while Southampton have never won it.

The 2005 League Cup, then known as the Carling Cup, represented Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho’s first trophy in English football. His Chelsea team defeated Liverpool 3-2 in extra-time.

During his two managerial reigns at Chelsea, Mourinho won the League Cup on two further occasions, in 2007 and 2015. As in 2005, Chelsea’s 2015 victory won him his first trophy of that spell at the club.

United’s last League Cup success came in 2010, and came after further recent victories in 2006 and 2010.

Wayne Rooney played in each of those finals, scoring in 2006 and 2010. Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia of the current squad also appeared in 2010, when United defeated Aston Villa 2-1.

Saints’ only previous final appearance came in 1979, when they lost 3-2 to Nottingham Forest.

Saints’ last major cup final came in 2003, when they lost 1-0 to Arsenal in the FA Cup final.

United and Saints most recently met in cup competition in January 2011. On that occasion United, that season’s Premier League champions, won 2-1 in the FA Cup at the team that would finish runners-up in League One.

The biggest win in a one-legged League Cup final is Swansea’a 5-0 victory over fourth tier Bradford in 2013. Ex-Saint Nathan Dyer scored twice.

From next season until 2020, the competition will be known as the Carabao Cup after a new sponsorship agreement was reached. The previous seven sponsors are Capital One, Milk, Littlewoods, Rumblelows, Coca-Cola, Worthington, and Carling.

How many centurions are there at each of the Premier League clubs?

Show/hide article…

Theo Walcott sealed victory for Arsenal against Sutton on Monday when he netted their second goal in the 2-0 win over the non-league side.

It was a landmark strike for the England international as he became the 18th player to reach 100 goals for Arsenal.

But how many centurions does each Premier League side have? Sportsmail has profiled each team.

Thierry Henry is Arsenal’s highest ever scorer and by some distance. He has 43 more goals than Ian Wright, who is second on 185. Theo Walcott is the 18th man to reach three figures for Arsenal.

The Cherries have five players to pass a century of goals in their history, including Brett Pitman over three spells at the club.

George Beel leads Burnley’s scoring charts with 178 goals for the Clarets, one of eight men to hit grand scoring heights to go down in history at Turf Moor.

Frank Lampard narrowly beats Bobby Tambing to be the highest ever Chelsea scorer. Nine players have passed the 100 goal mark for the Blues, Lampard and Didier Drogba the most recent to do so.

Ian Wright hit over 100 goals for both Arsenal and Crystal Palace. He is in a smaller group of players to do so at Selhurst Park, with Mark Bright, Clinton Morrison and Dougie Freedman among the list of eight names to go beyond 100 goals.

The legendary Dixie Dean is far and away the leading scorer in Everton’s history with an astonishing 383 goals. Romelu Lukaku is not too far from being the ninth man to score 100 for Everton - he is currently on 78.

The latest addition to Hull’s century makers was Ken Wagstaff, who played for Hull for 12 years from 1964.

Current Premier League champions Leicester have six players to notch over 100 goals, one of which is Gary Lineker.

Ian Rush leads a long list of Liverpool stars to pass 100 goals featuring other names such as Kenny Dalglish, Steven Gerrard and Roger Hunt.

Sergio Aguero needs 24 goals to become Manchester City’s all-time leading scorer. But with rumours emerging of unrest between him and Pep Guardiola, will he remain at the club for long enough to set the record?

Wayne Rooney recently became Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer with a sensational free-kick in the 1-1 draw at Stoke. United have 21 players who have scored more than 100 times for them - the most out of all Premier League sides.

Brian Clough is best known in English football for his achievements as a manager but in his playing days, he was a prolific goalscorer who netted more than 200 times for Middlesbrough.

Matt Le Tissier is second to Mick Channon on the list of highest ever scorers in Southampton’s history. Rickie Lambert - the forward who helped propel Southampton from League One to the Premier League - is the 11th highest scorer with 117 goals.

There are nine men to have passed the 100 mark for Stoke and John Ritchie is the club’s leading scorer with 176 goals.

Kevin Philips is one of 12 players from Sunderland’s history go beyond 100 goals - the legendary Len Shackleton is another.

Only four players have got to three figures for Swansea and Ivor Allchurch leads the way, with 166 strikes amassed from two separate spells at the club.

Jimmy Greaves heads an impressive list of players to have scored more than 100 times for Tottenham. Harry Kane seems set to become the 17th player to achieve the feat - he currently has 83 Spurs goals.

Troy Deeney is the most recent player to reach 100 goals for Watford and the fifth to do so in their history. The superb Luther Blissett is Watford’s highest ever scorer.

West Brom have had some prolific marksmen in their teams over the years with 11 players passing 100 goals, including Jeff Astle and Cyrille Regis, who starred under Ron Atkinson. The highest scorer of them all is Tony Brown, who scored 179 times for the Baggies over 18 years.

Vic Watson leads a prestigious list of marksmen from West Ham’s proud history, which includes Sir Geoff Hurst and Sir Trevor Brooking.
