Power Rankings’ Premier League best XI

Show/hide article…

As we enter the final international break of the Premier League season, we have created a Premier League best XI from this campaign - according to the Sky Sports Power Rankings season chart.

The rankings are updated every week and reflect players’ form based on points awarded for 32 different matchday stats.

Using that season chart, we’ve assembled the top-ranked players for each position in 4-3-3 formation - the system of choice for champions-elect Manchester City and third-placed Liverpool.

Let us know if you agree with the selections @SkySportsPL or in the comment box below…

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is the top-ranked 'keeper to date with a league-high 15 clean sheets, having also made more saves than any other goalkeeper at a top-six club with 97.

The Spaniard has accumulated 46,410 points this season, ahead of Manchester City’s Ederson (42,165) and Burnley’s Nick Pope (39,520).

The back four comprises of a 50/50 split between City and Chelsea players, with Kyle Walker and Nicolas Otamendi pairing Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta.

Alonso has scored six goals from left wing-back this season, while team-mate Azpilicueta has assisted another six - both league-topping stats for defenders in the Premier League this season.

Walker has also recorded six assists this term, while Otamendi has made more successful passes than any other player in the league with 2,464 completed.

As with the defence, City and Chelsea dominate the midfield - with Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard flanking holding midfielder Fernandinho.

De Bruyne currently ranks runner-up in the Power Rankings season chart, primarily from his league-topping 14 assists and additional 95 chances created.

Hazard gathered a momentum of form as the season progressed and has risen to No 6 in the season rankings, boosted by 11 goals and a league-high 128 successful dribbles.

Fernandinho is currently the top-ranked holding midfielder with 46,355 points, ahead of Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucoure (45,969) and Leicester’s Wilfred Ndidi (41,678).

Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah is the first name on the teamsheet as the current Power Rankings leader with 28 goals and nine assists.

On the opposing wing, City winger Raheem Sterling edges Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez with 15 goals and seven assists this term.

Unsurprisingly, Tottenham striker Harry Kane claims the central striker role with 24 goals before his injury, edging the next top-ranked striker, Sergio Aguero, by 8,500 Power Ranking points.

Martin Tyler’s stats and facts: Mo Salah’s four-goal haul, highest goal involvement in 2018 and free-scoring home teams

Show/hide article…

Has anyone else scored four goals in a game for Liverpool? And who has had a hand in the most goals in 2018? Martin Tyler has the answers…

Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler has the answers to those questions and more.

Got a question for Martin? Tweet @SkySportsPL with #TylersTeasers and do not forget to have a go at his latest teaser.

It is the sixth time Leicester City and Chelsea had met each other in the FA Cup and the Blues have now won all six. And on the last three occasions they have gone on to win the Cup itself - the fifth round in 1997 when they drew 2-2 at Filbert Street and Chelsea won 1-0 at home in a replay; then also in the fifth round in 2000, when Chelsea won 2-1 at Stamford Bridge; and nearly exactly six years to the day, on March 18, 2012, Chelsea won 5-2 at home.

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata scored for the first time in 14 games, with his last strike coming at home to Brighton on Boxing Day, while Jamie Vardy got his 17th goal of the season.

Leicester, meanwhile, missed out on their first FA Cup semi-final since 1982, but Chelsea are into the last four of the Cup for the 23rd time in their history.

The Foxes were also one of three clubs in the last eight never to have won the Cup, and along with Brighton and Swansea, they all went out, meaning all four semi-finalists (Man Utd, Tottenham, Chelsea and Southampton) have previously won the competition.

Mo Salah scored four times for Liverpool on Saturday, but how many Liverpool players have managed the same feat? Also, who has scored four goals in a Premier League game the most times? (Jack, Devon)

MARTIN SAYS: There are three other players that have scored four times in a single Premier League game for Liverpool, with Mo Salah adding his name to the list at the weekend. He has joined a talented club of Robbie Fowler (2), Michael Owen (2) and Luis Suarez, with the Uruguayan the last Liverpool player to do so against Norwich in December 2013.

In the Premier League as a whole, Sergio Aguero has the highest number of four-goal hauls, doing so three times, with his last coming not that long ago in February 2018 when he netted four against Leicester in a 5-1 win for Man City.

Alongside Fowler and Owen, five other players have scored four goals in two separate Premier League games - Dimitar Berbatov, Andrew Cole, Frank Lampard, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Yakubu.

Luka Milivojevic has scored more penalties than any other Premier League player this season (6), but how far is he from scoring the most in a single campaign? Who has missed the most penalties in a season? (Jason, Southampton)

MARTIN SAYS: Milivojevic has a few penalties to go before he can claim the top spot after his goal against Huddersfield on Saturday. It is a former Crystal Palace player who leads the way, though, in Andrew Johnson, who scored 11 penalties in the 2004/05 Premier League season.

Oddly, though, the Serb is perhaps best remembered by Sky Sports viewers for two penalty failures this season: the first on December 9 - in a game he had already scored a penalty in - when team-mate Christian Benteke took the ball out of his hands, only for his stoppage-time spot kick to be saved by Bournemouth goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

And then on New Year’s Eve when the midfielder saw his last-minute penalty kept out by Man City’ keeper Ederson, with both misses denying Palace three points.

Milivojevic is closely followed by three Premier League legends with 10 penalties each - Alan Shearer (1994/95), Frank Lampard (2009/10) and Steven Gerrard (2013/14) - while Ruud van Nistelrooy netted eight times from the spot in the 2002/03 campaign.

As mentioned last week, Van Nistelrooy, Darren Bent (2009/10) and Shearer (2003/04) also feature in the list for the most penalties missed in a Premier League season, although no player has ever missed more than three.

However, Wayne Rooney could break this record having already failed with three penalties this season, while Teddy Sheringham features twice in the list for Spurs in 1994/95 and Man Utd in 1997/98.

Romelu Lukaku been involved in 14 goals in 14 appearances in all competitions in 2018, but has anyone been involved in more? (Rachel, London)

MARTIN SAYS: Yes, there are two players who have been involved in more goals than Romelu Lukaku in 2018, but their names will not be a surprise. Sergio Aguero has played 15 games in all competitions this calendar year and had a hand in 18 goals - scoring 15 and assisting three times.

Mo Salah also features having been involved in 17 goals in 2018, although he has played in the least amount of games in the top five, featuring 12 times with 13 goals and four assists. Lukaku is third in the list with a breakdown of 10 goals and four assists in all competitions.

The final two spots in the top five come from Tottenham, with Heung-Min Son aiding 13 goals in 18 games, with nine goals and four assists. Harry Kane rounds off proceedings with 11 goals and one assist in 15 games so far in 2018.

Jurgen Klopp took charge of his 50th Premier League home game in charge of Liverpool and the Reds have averaged 2.22 goals per game since he took over - their highest goals-per-game ratio at Anfield in the competition under any Reds boss. Where does this figure rank overall in the Premier League era and who has scored the most goals at home on average so far this season? (Ashley, Yorkshire)

MARTIN SAYS: Klopp’s record at Anfield does feature quite highly - in the top seven in fact - and is level with Roberto Mancini’s career at Man City, whose side also scored 2.22 goals on average in their home Premier League games. This is not far behind Sir Alex Ferguson’s record at Old Trafford either, with his team’s averaging 2.25 goals.

Jumping to the top of the table, and it is Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea side who lead the way with 2.82 goals per game at Stamford Bridge between 2009 and 2011 in the Premier League, while Manuel Pellegrini’s City make it into second place with 2.70 goals per home game.

There are two other current Premier League managers who make the top seven for average Premier League goals scored at home in Pep Guardiola (2.59) and Antonio Conte (2.38). Indeed, Guardiola’s City also lead the way for Premier League goals scored at the Etihad this season at 3.40 per game on average.

They are followed by Arsenal (2.60), Liverpool (2.38), Manchester United (2.20) and Tottenham (2.07), while Burnley bring up the rear of the table with 0.80 goals per game on average at Turf Moor this season. Huddersfield also have under one goal per game at 0.94, while Swansea, Newcastle and Southampton are all averaging one goal per game at home this campaign.

Man Utd star Luke Shaw told which club to join next by Sky Sports pundit

Show/hide article…

There is real doubt over Shaw’s future at Old Trafford after failing to win over United manager Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese boss has criticised the 22-year-old defender on several occasions since taking charge of the club in 2016.

The latest incident came at the weekend when Shaw was hauled off at half-time in United’s 2-0 FA Cup quarter-final win over Brighton.

Shaw worked under Pochettino during their time together at Southampton and Le Tissier believes linking up with his former manager would be the right move for the troubled full-back.

England: Ryan Bertrand withdraws from squad with back injury

Show/hide article…

Defender Ryan Bertrand has withdrawn from the England squad for the upcoming friendlies with Italy and the Netherlands with a back injury.

The withdrawal is a precautionary measure and Bertrand will return to his club Southampton for assessment.

The left-back has 19 England caps and started five of Gareth Southgate’s side’s past six World Cup qualifiers.

England play the Netherlands on Friday, 23 March and Italy at Wembley on Tuesday, 27 March.

Bertrand’s withdrawal leaves Tottenham’s Danny Rose and Manchester United’s Ashley Young as the two left-backs in England’s squad.

Bertrand out of England games with back problem

Show/hide article…

Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand has left to England squad due to a back problem and will play no part in the friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy.

The left-back, who has 19 caps to his name, was vying with Danny Rose and Ashley Young to secure a role on the flanks in Gareth Southgate’s side ahead of the World Cup.

However he will have to let his displays at club level do the talking after returning to his club for treatment on an injury.

An FA statement confirmed: “There’s been an update to the Three Lions squad, with Ryan Bertrand returning to Southampton for further assessment on a back issue.

“Bertrand’s withdrawal is a precautionary measure, but he won’t play in this month’s matches.”

Neither the FA nor Southampton confirmed the timescale for Bertrand’s recovery but he will be desperate to return in time for the Saints next club match, a relegation six-pointer at West Ham.

“It’s definitely a massive game,” said the former Chelsea defender. “You go there and relish the opportunity because if you come out of there with a result it leaves you in very good stead.”

Ryan Bertrand out of England squad to face Holland and Italy

Show/hide article…

England suffered a key injury blow on Tuesday night when Southampton left back Ryan Bertrand quit the squad to face Holland and Italy.

The defender — first choice for his country at the end of 2017 — did not train at St George’s Park and will return to his club. Southampton have a key Premier League match at fellow strugglers West Ham on March 31.

Bertrand’s absence will allow fit-again Danny Rose or Ashley Young to stake a claim for the position.

28-year-old Bertrand was named in Gareth Southgate’s 27-man squad for the World Cup warm-ups. He helped Southampton to a 2-0 FA Cup quarter-final victory against Wigan on Sunday but has now returned to the club as a precautionary measure.

A Football Association statement read: 'Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand has returned to his club for further assessment on a back issue.

‘Bertrand’s withdrawal is a precautionary measure and he will play no part in the forthcoming fixtures against the Netherlands and Italy.’

Young and Rose remain left-back options in the England squad. Under-fire Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw is among the options to replace Bertrand if Southgate decides to call up an extra player.

Meanwhile, Adam Lallana and Jack Wilshere had separate indoor training sessions but are expected to be available for the game in Amsterdam on Friday.

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is in Aidy Boothroyd’s Under-21 squad, trained with the senior squad while Watford’s Nathaniel Chalobah, who has a long-term knee injury, was welcomed back into the fold by manager Gareth Southgate.

Jaïdi disappointed with Rovers loss

Show/hide article…

Despite a smart penalty save from Jack Rose, Saints were unable to take their chances at the opposite end, before full-back Jack Evans increased Rovers’ lead at the top of the table with a 91st minute winner.

Radhi Jaïdi was clear about his side’s aims prior to kick-off, after a good run of results had put them in contention to make the play-offs, but tonight’s loss will now make that feat unlikely.

“It is disappointing to concede a goal last minute, when we thought that we could have nicked the three points,” Jaïdi commented.

"I thought the first half we defended well, managed not to concede, Jack [Rose] makes two good saves. We said in the second half we needed to keep the ball better, I felt that we were erratic in possession.

"We were a bit quick to make the wrong decisions, and give the ball away, which kept us on the back foot. A draw wasn’t going to be enough for us [to make the PL2 play-offs], so we changed the shape and went for the win.

"If you want to win the game you cannot concede a goal last minute. Good save for the penalty, but we came here to win the game to give us a chance of the play-offs.

“The boys will learn, and we carry on working hard to improve and get ourselves to a better level.”
