How the Premier League table would look based on every club’s away form only

Show/hide article…

The 2017/18 Premier League season is drawing to a close, with just a few matchweeks remaining until we break for the summer.

Manchester City only need a few more wins to be crowned champions of England’s top division, while a host of clubs are fighting to avoid relegation and the abhorrent drop to the Championship.

Obviously the league table is built using results from both home and away matches throughout the campaign, but how would it look if only the away results were factored in?

Click the right arrow, above, to see the 20 Premier League teams ranked on only their away results…

Jaïdi on Rovers clash

Show/hide article…

Saints overcame Norwich in their previous league outing, with a last gasp winner from teenage striker Michael Obafemi, as Jaïdi continues to integrate some of the club’s younger players in to his Under-23s setup.

Three fixtures remain in Premier League 2, with Saints climbing in to the top half of the table after a good run of results, but will have to contend with various youngsters on international duty this week.

“Our schedule has involved a lot of travel, and part of the learning curve for the boys is to learn how to prepare and get ready for competitive fixtures,” Jaïdi remarked.

"It is really important that we bounce back from last Friday. We’ve been focussed on the player’s mentality and their psychology, to react, and to show they can reload.

"We expect a good performance, as always. Show some more resilience, and it is important they react to the in-game situations. Mainly play our football and control the game.

"We’re trying to give more game time to the younger boys who will be a part of the 23s group next season.

“Michael [Obafemi] is one of those, and he’s started to adapt and adjust himself to this level, he needs to continue to learn more, and the same goes for the rest of the younger boys.”

Bertrand already primed for West Ham

Show/hide article…

Ryan Bertrand says Saints are already relishing their huge relegation clash with West Ham after Mark Hughes’ instant impact on the squad.

The Saints skipper has been impressed with the extra impetus Hughes has injected into the team since replacing Mauricio Pellegrino, which helped guide the squad to the FA Cup semi-finals via a win at Wigan.

Though Bertrand now heads off with the England squad for friendlies against Holland and Italy, he is already looking ahead to a massive game against the Hammers as soon as he returns.

“It’s definitely a massive game,” said the 28-year-old.

"It’s something you might as well look forward to. There is no other way.

“You go there and relish the opportunity because if you come out of there with a result it leaves you in very good stead."

Saints will go into the game at the London Stadium in the bottom three, facing a West Ham side who are sat just one place and two points above them.

Hughes has been brought in on a contract until the end of the season with the objective of keeping Saints up, and Bertrand thinks the vastly experienced Welshman has a lot to offer.

“I’m looking forward to playing the remainder of the season with him,” admitted Bertrand.

“He’s been there and done it. Even as a player, he’s vastly experienced as well, and whatever he can share with us hopefully we can use and do what we need to do."

Saints have won just one of their last 17 league games, with a 3-0 defeat by Newcastle spelling the end of the road for Pellegrino.

“It’s a shared responsibility, from the manager to the players,” said Bertrand. “But when push comes to shove unfortunately it’s the manager that gets the bad end of it.”

Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final allowed Hughes the relative luxury of assessing his players outside of the Premier League pressure cooker, and all will hope it proves a catalyst for the challenges to come.

Bertrand said: “That’s what it’s about, just getting a win and taking confidence from that. We can take progressing in the competition into the league.”

Wigan dominated the first half but could not find the breakthrough and Southampton made them pay, upping their level in the second half and scoring through Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Cedric Soares, while Manolo Gabbiadini had a penalty brilliantly saved by Christian Walton.

Bertrand was not surprised by the pattern of the match, saying: “I think that’s tradition really, if you look at past fixtures. Wigan are a good team but lack quality compared to us. They have to fight and they made it a fight. It’s about competing with that and not being undone. After 50-60 minutes they died.”

Southampton: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg praises added ‘intensity’ under Mark Hughes

Show/hide article…

Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg says new manager Mark Hughes has brought added “discipline and intensity” since taking charge.

Saints reached the FA Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 win at Wigan in Hughes’ first match in charge on Sunday.

Denmark international Hojbjerg netted his first goal for the club to set up their semi-final tie against Chelsea.

“We need to swallow this experience under a new manager and carry it forward,” he told BBC Radio Solent.

Former Stoke manager and Southampton striker Hughes became Saints’ fifth manager in five years when he was appointed as Mauricio Pellegrino’s successor on Wednesday.

As well as April’s semi-final, Hughes has eight Premier League games before the end of the season to pull the side out of the relegation zone.

Hojbjerg, 22, is hopeful his influence can engineer a change in fortunes.

“The most important thing he has brought is togetherness,” he said. "That’s staying together with and without the ball.

"A guy with a playing and coaching career like his, you can only have respect for and I admire what he’s done.

“We’re all listening to his input and we’ll do everything in our power to get better between now and the end of the season.”

Luke Shaw ‘does make you pull your hair out at times’, claims Dodd

Show/hide article…

Jose Mourinho has split opinion on his treatment of Luke Shaw but one of the left-back’s former coaches has backed the under-fire Manchester United manager.

Jason Dodd, who helped bring through Shaw while a youth academy director at Southampton, has claimed getting the best out of the 22-year-old is a high maintenance process.

After being substituted at half-time in United’s 2-0 win over Brighton in the FA Cup on Saturday, Shaw was publicly criticised by Mourinho for his poor defending.

It is not the first time Mourinho has felt the need to question Shaw’s application at, with the defender’s fitness having previously been an issue at Old Trafford.

But Dodd insists that a tough-love approach is needed to help extract the best from the left back.

‘He does make you pull your hair out at times,’ Dodd told the BBC. ‘You have to try different things to get the best out of him.’

‘I think they have tried everything and they have not got through to him to get him out on the pitch and perform.

‘Luke is one of those players where you have to keep on, you have to keep pushing him and he needs to be challenged.’

Despite the criticism, Mourinho has previously praised the England full back as being one of the best around and Dodd believes that sort of variation can help manage the former Saints star.

‘I was constantly on him. He likes it. He needs more of a cuddle, and then give him a little dig,’ Dodd added.

'That is how you get him going. He is a fantastic player, but if you have to question some of it – his drive, training everyday, and giving absolutely everything.

‘You are at Manchester United. Mourinho expects you to put it in every session and that is an area where Luke will struggle.’

Shaw is said to have been driven to despair by his treatment at the hands of Mourinho, and the 22-year-old’s boyhood club Chelsea are thought to head the race to sign him in the summer.
