U23 Report: Blackburn 1-0 Saints

Show/hide article…

A string of fine saves from Rose earned his team a draw in the same fixture a month previously in the Premier League Cup and the ‘keeper was in excellent form once more here to deny the home side until second-half stoppage time.

A point-blank block on Rovers’ William Tomlinson kept the visitors level before half-time and a low diving save to parry Joseph Grayson’s late spot-kick looked to have ensured the visitors returned to Staplewood with something to show for on the night, but it was not to be.

Jack Evans curled home from the edge of the box after 90 minutes to snatch victory for the PL2 league leaders in what was the match’s only real moment of attacking quality.

Comprehensively beaten by a fine Leicester side in the PL Cup on Friday, Radhi Jaïdi’s Saints responded with greater resilience here and their determination all over the field before Evans’s last-gasp strike will have pleased the former Saints centre-back in spite of the result.

Both sides had opportunities to win the game in a first half which promised plenty but gave way to a scrappy affair as the evening drew on.

Beginning the brighter, Tyreke Johnson crossed for Siph Mdlalose to volley wide on the run at the back post for Saints but it was Blackburn who ought to have struck first.

After a spell of territorial dominance and control of the second balls in midfield, a deflected shot spun kindly into the path of Evans who sliced wide unmarked from the middle of the penalty area with Rose beaten.

Saints fashioned a gilt-edged chance of their own from nothing shortly afterwards.

The high pressing of the energetic Mdlalose forced a mistake in the home defence and the South African squared for Jake Hesketh to side-foot wide via a deflection with the goal at his mercy.

The missed opportunity almost cost Jaïdi’s charges immediately; a sweeping breakaway from right to left at the other end was denied brilliantly by the legs of Rose from William Tomlinson’s snapshot at the near post.

Johnson headed clear from the under the crossbar from the resulting corner as an even and competitive opening period drew to a close.

The contest recommenced in much the same fashion: loose balls aplenty in the middle with decisive touches in the final third at a premium; it wasn’t until the 73rd minute that Saints tested Rovers keeper Andrew Fisher for the first time, Callum Slattery tamely curling into his arms from a free-kick.

Coach Jaïdi sent on 16-year-old Enzo Robise – on the scoresheet in style in the U18s’ 1-1 draw with Reading at the weekend – in place of Mdlalose in search of a winner yet the biggest moment of the encounter occurred in the visiting penalty area.

A trip from Ben Rowthorne sent Blackburn’s Grayson to the spot with a chance to seal all three points six minutes from time. Rose’s one-handed save low to his right was worthy of at least a point for Saints but Rovers soon bounced back to net the game’s deciding goal.

With the Saints defence packed tightly before him, Evans dug a loose ball out of his feet to curl into the corner from the edge of the area to settle proceedings in stoppage time.

Ryan Bertrand withdraws from England squad through injury

Show/hide article…

Ryan Bertrand has withdrawn from the 27-strong England squad through injury.

The left-back has returned to his club, Southampton, with a back problem although the Football Association insisted it was a precautionary measure.

The 28-year-old would have started at least one of the forthcoming friendlies, against Holland and Italy to add to his 19 England caps having started five of the last six World Cup qualifiers. Given he has two other left-backs in his squad, in Ashley Young and Danny Rose, England manager Gareth Southgate may choose not to call up a replacement.

Interestingly, though, Southgate could decide to use Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon to train with the senior squad having mentioned the 17-year-old, who is with the Under-21s, when he announced his squad last week as a player who was pushing for a senior call-up.

Young, meanwhile, insisted his Manchester United team-mate, and another left-back, Luke Shaw could still become “one of the best in the world” despite the criticism of him by United manager Jose Mourinho which has led to an expectation that the 22-year-old will leave the club this summer.

“I want to see Luke do well,” Young said. “He just has to get his head down and work. I feel he can be one of the best in the world.”

England news: Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand withdraws from national squad with back injury

Show/hide article…

Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand has pulled out of the England squad due to a back issue.

The 28-year-old was named in Gareth Southgate’s 27-man squad for the World Cup warm-up friendlies against Holland and Italy.

Bertrand helped Southampton to a 2-0 FA Cup quarter-final victory against Wigan on Sunday and has now returned to the club as a precautionary measure.

A Football Association statement read: "Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand has returned to his club for further assessment on a back issue.

“Bertrand’s withdrawal is a precautionary measure and he will play no part in the forthcoming fixtures against the Netherlands and Italy.”

Ashley Young and Danny Rose remain left-back options in the England squad.

Under-fire Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw is among the options to replace Bertrand if Southgate decides to call up an extra player.

Bertrand ruled out of England friendlies with back injury

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand has withdrawn from the England squad for friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy due to a back injury, the Football Association (FA) has said.

The 28-year-old, who has been capped 19 times by England, will miss Friday’s trip to face the Dutch in Amsterdam and the home game against Italy four days later.

The FA said in a statement Bertrand was “returning to Southampton for further assessment on a back issue.

“Bertrand’s withdrawal is a precautionary measure, but he won’t play in this month’s matches.”

The left-back’s withdrawal leaves Danny Rose and Ashley Young competing for a starting spot as players look to show they are worth a place in England’s squad for the World Cup.

Referee myth-busting: How many decisions do officials get right?

Show/hide article…

Referee myth-busting: How many decisions do officials get right?

If you say you haven’t moaned about a referee, you’d be lying.

But in this day and age of in-depth statistics, analysis and technology, just how well do officials perform week-by-week?

We got the numbers and broke them down into bite-size chunks. You may be surprised…

According to the PGMO (Professional Game Match Officials), Premier League referees make on average 245 decisions, almost three times more than average player touches ball (90). That’s one decision every 22 seconds.

Sixty of these decisions are technical (goal kicks, corners, throw ins), leaving 185 decisions to judge physical conduct or disciplinary actions.

Of those 185, 28 are visible decisions where action is taken (fouls, restarts), and 157 are non-visible, where play continues.

Refs make on average two mistakes per game. Meaning they are correct 99.2 per cent of the time.

Many supporters would struggle to give the name of a single assistant referee in the Premier League, but the outcome of a game can hinge on their decisions.

Assistants make an average of 110 judgements, including offside technical and disciplinary decisions.

Just 39 of these are pure offside decisions, with just five of these resulting in an offside flag going up. Their accuracy is on average 98 per cent.

Sir Alex Ferguson was handed a two-match touchline ban in 2009 for branding referee Alan Wiley “unfit” following a draw against Sunderland.

The refs weren’t too happy, and officials’ fitness regimes have been widely publicised since.

On average, referees run 9.7km just below the average player distance run of 9.8km. Anthony Taylor’s distance at Arsenal v Chelsea on January 3 was 11.6km.

Referees are making 70 per cent more sprints than they were nine seasons ago, and make an average of 24 high-intensity runs per game.

The player average for distance covered at high speed (20-25km/h) is 575m. During Manchester City v Arsenal in November, Michael Oliver covered 936m at high speed.

Players sprint 160m per match on average. Graham Scott covered almost twice as much ground at sprinting speed during Tottenham v Southampton (290m).

We have seen 40 matches this season in which a referee or assistant referee has achieved a peak speed higher than the player average (30.3km/h). These are mostly assistant referees.

Officials’ performance is monitored continually, and they have formal fitness tests four times a year for the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) and two times a year for UEFA.

Just like players, referees must prepare for the weekend games with a rigorous training regime. A typical week for referees includes a light recovery session the day after a game, and three days of intense sessions before the Saturday game, including weight training, high-intensity work and speed training.

Everything is monitored, reviewed and reported back to the officials, so the Premier League’s top refs can be at the top of their game each weekend.

Rose: Everyone is gutted

Show/hide article…

The 23-year-old kept Saints level with a superb one-handed stop to deny Rovers midfielder Joseph Grayson from 12 yards late in the game, but wasn’t able to prevent a 91st-minute winner in stoppage time.

It left the young Southampton side unable to make up the deficit needed to reach the PL2 play-offs, prompting Rose to express his post-match disappointment.

“Everyone is gutted in the changing room,” the keeper said. "I thought we all stuck together. We defended really well, but couldn’t get that break up front. That’s what we planned to do.

"[The penalty save] doesn’t really count for much when you lose, but I guessed right and it went well.

"I get a feeling at the time, and I have to trust that. There isn’t much more to it.

“A draw wasn’t enough for us anyway, we came here thinking we were capable of three points. It didn’t turn out like that tonight, but we have to go again.”
