Wigan stun Manchester City to set up Saints FA Cup tie

Show/hide article…

SAINTS will face Wigan Athletic in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after the Latics pulled off a remarkable win over Manchester City last night in the fifth-round.

Will Grigg netted in the 79th minute for the League One high-fliers to defeat 10-man City 1-0 at the DW Stadium.

Fabian Delph was dismissed late on in the first-half for the Premier League leaders for a late challenge.

Saints will travel to Wigan on the weekend of 16-19 March.

Pep Guardiola was involved in a furious row with Wigan boss Paul Cook as City’s quadruple bid was sensationally derailed by their FA Cup bogey team.

Grigg scored a stunning late breakaway goal as Wigan repeated their shock 2013 final victory over City in a fiery fifth-round tie at the DW Stadium, winning 1-0.

The main talking point came on the stroke of half-time as City’s Delph was controversially sent off and an irate Guardiola became embroiled in a touchline argument with Cook.

The pair continued their row in the tunnel as the teams left the field at half-time and they had to be separated by colleagues.

After all Guardiola’s recent complaints about bad tackles on his players, Delph was dismissed for sliding in on Max Power.

Yet, despite their numerical disadvantage, City only had themselves to blame for spurning a host of chances against the League One side.

Grigg made them pay in the 79th minute as Latics secured another famous victory over City following their 2013 success and another in the quarter-finals the following year.

Against the odds, it is now they who go forward to a last-eight tie with Saints and not the runaway Premier League leaders.

Adding to Guardiola’s frustration might have been bad tackles on Sergio Aguero and Danilo by Dan Burn and Gavin Massey respectively, but his team also lacked a cutting edge.

They dominated possession throughout but could not take advantage. Aguero headed over early on and Ilkay Gundogan forced a good save from Christian Walton.

Gundogan found himself in another good position only to mis-kick and Aymeric Laporte also failed to make clean contact in front of goal.

Fernandinho blazed over from a gilt-edged opportunity about eight yards, Gundogan missed the target with another effort and Danilo dragged a shot wide.

Yet all the while, Wigan were defending stoically and threatened occasionally on the break.

Claudio Bravo needed to be alert to smother the ball at Gary Roberts’ feet and Grigg fired into the side-netting after beating John Stones.

Aguero looked like opening the scoring after breaking into the box just before the interval, but Walton produced another fine save.

Controversy then erupted as referee Anthony Taylor dismissed Delph following a sliding challenge on Power.

Taylor initially had a yellow card in his hand, but eventually brandished the red one, sparking vociferous complaints from City players, who felt the decision was harsh.

Guardiola was also angered and encroached on to the field, his arguments with Cook continuing for some time afterwards.

People appeared to calm down during the break and City, minus Delph, soon reasserted their dominance.

Again they controlled much of the ball, but Wigan continued to defend stubbornly and Guardiola sent Kevin De Bruyne on after the hour in the hope of opening them up.

Yet the frustration continued for City, with Fernandinho having a shot blocked and nobody able to turn in a Danilo ball across goal.

Grigg capitalised on a Kyle Walker error to win it for Wigan late on. The Northern Ireland international seized possession on halfway and charged upfield before slotting a fine shot past Bravo from the edge of the area.

McCarthy’s waiting game pays off

Show/hide article…

ALEX McCarthy is showing at Saints the skills set which once had managers and pundits cooing over his England prospects.

Now three successive seasons of patiently waiting for his chance at QPR, Crystal Palace and finally Saints have come to an end, the goalkeeper is beginning to rediscover his once-coveted potential.

The 28-year-old has only improved since he replaced Fraser Forster ten games ago and, in the FA Cup fifth-round victory at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, McCarthy produced his best display yet.

Since Forster’s form dropped off – culminating in a demoralising 5-2 loss at Tottenham on Boxing Day, McCarthy has been first-choice between the sticks for struggling Saints.

In the 2-1 win at The Hawthorns, the former Reading man produced a superb all-round performance and among several fine saves was one to tip away Grzegorz Krychowiak’s effort to keep Saints ahead in the narrow win.

McCarthy has played the waiting game in the past, playing second fiddle to Rob Green at QPR as well as Wayne Hennessey at Crystal Palace and Forster at Saints.

His career took off big-time at Reading. Former England manager Kevin Keegan described McCarthy, then a 21-year-old, as “incredible” after he kept a clean-sheet with several stunning saves in the Championship Royals’ 1-0 win at Everton in the FA Cup fifth-round in March 2011.

After spending five seasons on loan at various clubs, including Leeds, Ipswich and Bath, McCarthy’s patience paid off at Reading.

After number one Adam Federici failed to impress, McCarthy was deployed and was soon being touted as an England hopeful.

He made 14 Premier League appearances in 2012/13 as Reading were relegated from the Premier League.

But it was the following second-tier campaign in 2013/14 that McCarthy became undisputed first-choice at the Madejski Stadium, playing 44 matches that term.

McCarthy had impressed former Saints manager Harry Redknapp and in August 2014, the then QPR boss brought him to Loftus Road in a deal worth up to £6m.

On his arrival, Redknapp said: “I think he’s got the potential to be a future England goalkeeper one day.”

But the QPR move was far from a successful and McCarthy made just five appearances in all competitions and failed to dethrone Green as first-choice as The Rs were relegated.

Now 25 years old, McCarthy went searching for first team football at Crystal Palace. A £3.5m move happened in July 2015.

He started the first six Premier League games of the 2015/16 term, but a string of errors saw Hennessey establish himself as first pick at Selhurst Park and McCarthy played just one more top-flight match that term.

Following this, McCarthy was brought in as back-up to Forster at Saints in a £2m deal in August 2016.

He kept clean-sheets in his only two appearances in 2016/17 – in League Cup victories over former club Palace and Sunderland at St Mary’s.

But aside from that McCarthy, until December 30, 2017, has played an arduous waiting game, virtually since leaving Reading in 2014.

Now he’s first choice at Saints, however, he showing little sign of surrendering the gloves back to Forster.

Saints have lost twice in his ten matches in all competitions since his promotion to number one.

McCarthy, who has three England Under-21s caps, has previously had two senior Three Lions call ups, but never played.

In May 2013 and September 2016, McCarthy was selected.

However, he is still waiting for his chance on the senior international stage, but if he is able to continue his performances for Saints, a debut might not be far away.

Telford excited by Lionesses’ visit to St Mary’s

Show/hide article…

Chelsea goalkeeper Carly Telford has hailed the decision of the Football Association to play England’s key 2019 World Cup qualifier against Wales at St Mary’s.

England last played in Southampton in 2006, beating Hungary 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier, and Telford is hoping for a repeat performance in April.

Telford, who signed a new deal to stay at Women’s Super League side Chelsea back in July, is determined to establish herself as a mainstay in new boss Phil Neville’s World Cup plans.

And the 30-year-old shot-stopper revealed it would be a dream come true to run out at a Premier League ground in April, against Wales.

“I think that when you become a professional footballer, because you’re watching the men all the time, you’re looking to play at those grounds and so it’s a dream,” she said.

“Wembley (England played Germany for the first time there in 2014) was a major moment for women’s football, playing at the home of football.

“Now, the FA are trying to look at those Premier League grounds to host these games. Why not?

“Once upon a time, you could argue that we were getting between 1,000 and 5,000 supporters per game, but you look now and we’re getting 10,000 or 20,000, or more, depending on where it’s hosted.

“The opportunity’s there to use the bigger grounds, as long as it’s done at the right time and at the right place, and as long as it’s marketed the same way – the FA has done a fantastic job of always doing that.

“The success of the team always helps, too. We still must pinch ourselves to think that many people want to come and watch us, and how many you have watching on TV.

“It just shows how far we’ve come as a nation to really get people interested in the women’s game.”

And Telford has warned her teammates against complacency when they tackle Wales.

“I’ve played alongside Sophie Ingle, who’s the captain – I played with her at Chelsea a few years ago, so we know that she’s a very good player and the armband is a huge honour for her,” added Telford.

“I knew back then she was a very good professional and playing at Liverpool with some very good players will have brought her on leaps and bounds.

“I think it’s always one to look forward to when you see that you draw a home nation in your group.

“One, you don’t have to travel very far and, two, it makes the rivalry a bit better.

“I think we’ve drawn Wales twice now. We played them in the European qualifiers for the World Cup in 2015. It’s always a good game, a feisty game.

“I think they’re only going to get better and better, so I think the task for us becomes harder as nations try to catch up with us and they invest more into their teams and become more professional.”

England face Wales in a FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier at St. Mary’s Stadium on Friday 6th April (KO 7pm). Buy tickets (£10 Adult/£1 Concessions) by clicking here or calling 02381 780 780.

Saints beat Newcastle to boost play-off hopes

Show/hide article…

Southampton boosted their chances of making a late push for the Division 2 play-offs with a 5-1 victory over Newcastle United.

Nathan Tella put Saints on course for a third successive PL2 win with the first-half opener at Northumberland FA.

Michael Obafemi doubled the lead early in the second half, before Alfie Jones headed in the third and Jake Hesketh quickly made it 4-0.

Josef Yarney replied for the Magpies but substitute Siphesile Mdlalose restored the visitors’ four-goal advantage late on.

Saints are four points off fifth place, the final position for the promotion play-offs, with a match in hand. Newcastle drop to 11th.

Obafemi delighted to be back on the goal trail

Show/hide article…

The 17-year-old striker was thrust from the Under-18s straight into the first team when he made his debut off the bench against Tottenham a month ago.

Without a goal since, Obafemi got back on track as he found the net for Radhi Jaïdi’s side in the 5-1 win at Newcastle last night.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” he said. “The boys have given me a bit of stick because it’s been a long time coming!

“This is my first goal since making my debut, so I’m just happy to score and now I want to kick on.”

Obafemi admitted he took time to adapt to Under-23 football, but now feels comfortable playing as the spearhead in a talented attacking team.

“The first few games I was a bit easy-osy, but now I’m getting into it, feeling confident and linking up with Hesky (Jake Hesketh),” he added.

“Hopefully in the next game I can score against Blackburn and get myself back in the first team.”
