Targett happy to ‘feel important’ again

Show/hide article…

MATT Targett admits it’s great to “feel important” again at Fulham after experiencing a frustrating spell at Saints.

The 22-year-old left-back is on loan from St Mary’s at the Championship promotion chasers for the rest of the season and has flourished during his four games for the Cottagers so far, after joining last month.

Fulham are unbeaten with Targett, who hadn’t played regular football at Saints because of injuries and Ryan Bertrand’s status as first-choice left-back, in the side, having most recently beaten Aston Villa 2-0.

“At Southampton I have just been a training player so it is nice to come here, play games and feel important,” he said.

"I am 22 now so I am only getting older and I need to start playing games and gaining experience.

"The main aim is to get Fulham back in the Premier League and on a personal note try and play as many games as possible.

“The boys have been very welcoming. It was nice to get my first senior goal last weekend,” he added talking about his goal in a 1-1 draw at Bolton recently.

"It was a shame we could not get the win but on a personal note it was nice to score.

"The team have been in great form so it is quite easy to come into the team with everyone playing with so much confidence.

“The club has helped me settle in very well. It is a great club to be at. The staff are all friendly. The club has made me feel important which is nice.”

U23 Report: Newcastle 1-5 Saints

Show/hide article…

Goals either side of the break from Nathan Tella and Michael Obafemi lit the blue touch paper for an emphatic success, with Alfie Jones, Jake Hesketh and Siph Mdlalose adding three more to earn maximum points.

Saints started the brighter of the two sides, pressing the hosts high up the pitch and earning a number of corners, with the first meaningful opportunity falling to the feet of Josh Sims.

After Callum Slattery’s corner was cleared as far as Tella, Sims got on the end of the former Arsenal’s winger deep cross, only to see his effort hit the side-netting from a tight angle.

The first-half was stopped for a large period when Newcastle keeper Paul Woolston suffered a serious injury and was forced off shortly before the half hour mark.

On 37 minutes, Saints’ dominance was finally rewarded when Hesketh found Sims on the right, who delivered an inviting low cross, which left Tella with a simple close-range finish.

Undeterred by the interval, the visitors continued on the front foot and soon doubled their advantage. Hesketh, who provided a constant threat, lofted a cross towards Jones and his header was turned in by the outstretched boot of Obafemi.

And the provider turned goalscorer seven minutes later when Slattery’s corner was glanced home by the head of captain Jones, kissing the post on the way in to give substitute keeper Otto Huuhtanen no chance.

Shortly after the hour mark, Hesketh scored the goal his performance merited when his low effort from distance proved too powerful.

The hosts, who had rarely threatened, forced Jack Rose into a stop through Owen Gallacher shortly before reducing the arrears, with Mackenzie Heaney’s corner headed home by Josef Yarney.

It was not enjoy to mount a late comeback though, with substitute Siph Mdlalose making it five for Radhi Jaïdi’s young charges.

Gardos heads out on loan

Show/hide article…

SAINTS outcast Florin Gardos has joined Romanian outfit Clubul Sportiv Universitatea Craiova on loan until the end of the season.

The centre-back’s contract is up at the end of this campaign and he is unlikely now to return to St Mary’s.

A Saints statement said: "Southampton defender Florin Gardos has completed a loan switch back to Romania until the end of the season.

"The defender, whose Southampton deal is due to come to an end in the summer, has joined Clubul Sportiv Universitatea Craiova.

"The Liga I side are third in the regular season standings in Romania, and have secured qualification for the championship round, which decides the title and European places.

“Everyone at Southampton wishes Florin well for the remainder of the season.”

The Daily Echo reported recently that Gardos was free to negotiate a move away from Saints after nearly four years on the south coast.

Jaïdi hails “tremendous” Saints

Show/hide article…

Goals from five different scorers in Nathan Tella, Michael Obafemi, Alfie Jones, Jake Hesketh and Siph Mdlalose earned a fourth win in five games, in all competitions.

And while Jaïdi felt his side deserved maximum spoils after a dominant team display, he’s urged his youngsters to remain focussed.

“It was a tremendous performance from our boys from the start. We dominated the game in both halves and scored goals,” he reflected.

“We missed a couple of chances in the first-half but in the second-half we created chances and the attitude of all the boys was spot on, even the impact players.

“That shows how hard the boys worked and we’re so pleased with most of the performances, all the boys individually and collectively ticked the box as well as showing great quality on the ball.

“I think at the start of the season we had ups and downs but we have now found that consistency.

“Players understanding, players decision making and managing the games have all come together and you can see the results.

“Hopefully we can keep the momentum now which will bring us more positive results. We can’t be complacent, we have to keep going.”
