Kozák signs first pro deal

Show/hide article…

The Slovakia youth international joined Saints in the summer from Spartak Trnava in his homeland, and now puts pen to paper on a two-and-a-half-year contract at St Mary’s.

Kozák, who turns 17 today, is yet to appear for Craig Fleming’s Under-18s so far this season due to injury, but is nearing a return to fitness.

A physically imposing centre-back, Kozák is determined to make his mark after securing a dream move to the Premier League.

“I am very excited for this moment,” he said. “This was my dream from when I was 13 years old and I am very happy to sign for Southampton Football Club.

“My first impression was great, I felt very good with my school and my coaches. It changed my life.

“But after one month, I was injured for a long time and for me, that was a very hard moment.

“Now I feel good, so I think this moment has made me stronger. I believe I can be better than I was before.

“My dream is to play for the Southampton first team in the Premier League."

Saints should be wary of Wigan

Show/hide article…

SAINTS fans rejoiced as Wigan Athletic defeated runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City in the FA Cup fifth-round.

It means Mauricio Pellegrino’s men will play the League One high fliers in the quarter-finals next month rather than Pep Guardiola’s frighteningly good side, who were targeting a quadruple of trophies before the shock Latics defeat.

Certainly, playing against a team from the third-tier is preferable to playing the champions-elect.

But Saints should be careful not to be cocksure about this last eight tie.

City will be Wigan’s biggest scalp of the competition, undoubtedly, but Paul Cook, the former Portsmouth manager, has already led his side to victory over two other Premier League sides.

Their hat-trick of top-flight scalps have all come at their DW Stadium lair, where Saints will travel on the weekend of 16-19 of March.

Wigan, who defeated Manchester City in the 2013 FA Cup final, put Bournemouth to the sword 3-0 in their third round replay in January.

The Cherries went down without a fight at the DW, as Wigan took the game to Eddie Howe’s men.

It came after Cook’s men narrowly missed out on victory at the Vitality Stadium, where a late Steve Cook goal spared Bournemouth’s blushes in a 2-2 draw and set up the replay.

Wigan followed the Cherries victory up by cruising past West Ham 2-0 in the fourth-round at the end of last month.

The Latics are brimming with confidence and used to winning – something lower Premier League teams have just not been able to cope with and this has also, amazingly, taken them past City too.

Wigan have lost just five times in 30 League One games, conceded just 18 goals – the best defensive record in the third tier, and have lost twice at home in 22 games in all competitions.

As Saints can attest from their rise through the ranks from League One, that confidence, momentum and winning feeling can take a team a long way.

Pellegrino’s side have struggled with confidence all season and have not yet come up against a team building such strong momentum in the FA Cup.

They’ve beaten Premier League bottom-half side Watford and fellow relegation zone outfit West Brom, as well as scraping past Championship Fulham in the third-round 1-0.

Saints must now prepare for a big fight at Wigan. It won’t be easy, but it isn’t City and that gives them a chance.

However, it might not be straightforward.

Southampton part ways with £6m flop who cost them £680,000 per appearance

Show/hide article…

Southampton flop Florin Gardos has returned home to Romania — after costing Saints a whopping £680,000 per appearance.

The 29-year-old Romania international has joined Universitatea Craiova until the end of the season, when his £30,000-a-week Saints contract will expire and he’ll be a free agent.

The centre-back has played just 18 times for Southampton since joining them from Steaua Bucharest in his homeland for a fee of £6million in summer 2014, when Ronald Koeman was their manager.

Gardos has not played in the Premier League for almost three years under the Dutchman, his successor Claude Puel and current boss Mauricio Pellegrino.

His only senior run-out since that February 2015 match away to West Brom was in the 5-0 FA Cup loss to Arsenal last January.

Southampton star Romeu’s amazing claim after summer links with Barcelona

Show/hide article…

Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu has claimed he would rather stay with his relegation strugglers than return to Barcelona.

The 26-year-old Spaniard came through the youth ranks at the Nou Camp but made one appearance for their senior side before moving to Chelsea in 2011 for £4.5million.

He moved on to St Mary’s in summer 2015 and has since been so reliable for the Saints that Barca were said to be keen to re-sign him last summer.

But Romeu has insisted he wants to stay on the south coast — and that he would turn down a return to the Nou Camp anyway.

He said of the Barca links: “Nothing reached me.

“Yes, I heard some comment that they needed players there and various names were considered, but they never contacted me or my agent. They probably didn’t see me as an option.”

Southampton have won just one of their last 14 Premier League games keeping only one clean sheet in the process.

But Romeu maintains helping the club to fight against the drop is far more preferable to sitting on the bench with the European giants.

He added: “To go to a big club to be in the second tier [of players], I don’t know if I would accept it.

“I don’t enjoy [it], what I want is to play. I don’t think that at Barca I could have been a starting player, it’s like that and you have to be aware of the options that one has.”

Sam Vokes puts Southampton loyalties aside for Burnley game

Show/hide article…

Southampton-born Sam Vokes admits his winner for Burnley upset his family of Saints fans earlier this season, but he does not mind repeating the trick.

Vokes came off the bench to score the winning goal against his hometown club at St Mary’s in November.

The 28-year-old’s family will be journeying up to Turf Moor for the return fixture on Saturday, and Vokes has no qualms about sending his loved ones back disappointed.

“On my side it’s 100 per cent Burnley this weekend,” he told Sky Sports News.

"Obviously it was the team I supported growing up and getting the goal to win the game earlier in the season was a great feeling for myself.

"It’s another fixture I’ll be looking forward to.

"The old man wasn’t too happy to be honest. It was a joke with him in the night and it was a big result for us at the time.

“He’ll be coming up the game and it’s a fixture that stands out for the family but when it comes down to it - it’s an important game for us and myself as a Burnley player.”
