Ward-Prowse: We showed character

Show/hide article…

Saints had just three days to dust themselves down after a disappointing night on home soil, but showed their spirit to produce a battling display at Stamford Bridge.

Ultimately, Marcos Alonso’s free kick proved the difference between the two sides in West London.

“It was an important reaction to Wednesday night, which didn’t go the way we wanted it to go, but I think to a man we worked very hard today,” Ward-Prowse said.

“It’s always difficult coming here, but I think we’re a bit disappointed we didn’t nick something towards the end.

“Against a few top teams now we’ve kept them quiet and we can take positives from that, but today the most important thing was the character we showed after a disappointing result in midweek.”

Alonso’s match-winning strike from long range was virtually the last kick of the first half.

“There was a real belief in the changing room at half-time that we were still in the game,” Ward-Prowse added.

“It’s a killer time to concede a goal, right on the stroke of half-time, but we showed in the second half that we kept our spirits high.

“We kept working hard and possibly could’ve nicked one at the end.”

Mauricio Pellegrino admits he ‘can’t control’ Virgil van Dijk’s future after benching defender for loss at Chelsea

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino admitted he could not control whether or not Virgil van Dijk will leave Southampton in January after dropping him for the defeat to Chelsea. And Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte did not rule out a move for Van Dijk as he underlined his admiration for the central defender.

Chelsea failed with a bid for Van Dijk during the summer and the Dutchman’s omission at Stamford Bridge could spark new interest from Conte, along with Manchester City and Liverpool. City are known to want a defensive reinforcement in January, while Conte has admitted that David Luiz’s knee injury is serious and could keep him out for some time. Liverpool were forced to apologise for the nature of their pursuit of Van Dijk, but still have issues at the back.

A Marcos Alonso free-kick was enough to win the game for Chelsea, but it was the absence of Van Dijk, who was valued at £70 million six months ago, which created the most intrigue. Southampton were adamant that Van Dijk would not be sold in the summer, even after he told the club he wanted to leave and trained on his own. But, on the prospect of a January departure, Saints manager Pellegrino said: “I can’t control the market. I’m not the owner of the player. I can have my opinion and this I have give to the technical director, to the chairman my opinion. After, the board can decide all together which is the best for the team.”

Pellegrino: We were in it until the end

Show/hide article…

Having called upon his side to respond to their midweek defeat to Leicester, Saints put in a battling display but were undone by Marcos Alonso’s free-kick on the stroke of half-time.

“In some moments, we were strong. We defended with personality and we counter-attacked with spirit. Our idea was to be in the game until the end,” Pellegrino reflected.

“When we made the changes, we created a couple of chances and I think we were there. We were really close to a draw in this game.

“I changed the position of Nathan at half-time a little bit and after we changed again with Sofiane and Charlie coming on because it was difficult to arrive in wide areas with their three defenders and two wing-backs. They move the ball with tempo.

“They want to open the corridor in the middle. It wasn’t easy to defend the open play from them.

“In general, we competed well and we were in the game until the end.”

Mauricio Pellegrino praises Southampton spirit in Chelsea defeat

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino praised Southampton’s spirit after they succumbed to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Marcos Alonso scored the only goal of a game Chelsea dominated but failed to kill off, with Southampton twice coming close to equalising through substitute Charlie Austin in the second half.

The defeat extended Southampton’s winless run to six games in the Premier League, but Pellegrino was pleased with the attitude shown by his players after Wednesday’s 4-1 thrashing by Leicester.

“Obviously when you are playing with five defenders you don’t have a lot of people in the middle and they managed more of the ball,” he told Sky Sports.

"Always when you win something on one side you lose something on the other, but at the end we had a couple of chances and we were really close.

"The feeling wasn’t bad because we were fighting until the end and we were close to equalising.

"I imagined playing this way we would arrive at their end to have possibilities and we did. In general, the spirit was good, we competed well. It was a pity as we were really close to equalising.

“Obviously against Chelsea it is not easy to have many chances. But I think we had three clear chances and we couldn’t score.”

The defeat saw Southampton slip to 12th but Pellegrino is confident they can bounce back from their poor run of form.

“I think the team is training well and the mentality is good,” he said. “They are fighting and we are creating a good atmosphere to try and bounce back from this situation, but football today is very tight. We have an opportunity next Saturday. Hopefully we can gain three points.”

Chelsea 1-0 Southampton: Pellegrino rues lack of clinical finishing

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino felt his side would have got something at Chelsea had they produced some clinical finishing.

Saints were beaten 1-0 at Stamford Bridge with Marcos Alono’s free kick in first half stoppage time proving the difference between the teams.

Charlie Austin had two second half openings that he was unable to take as Saints failed to get anything from the game.

Pellegrino said: “I think it was a difficult game.

“We were a little bit unlucky in the way that we concede.

“Chelsea create clear chances but our idea was to be in the game until the end and I think we were there and tried to change something at the end to have our possibilities and we were really close to equalise.

“It was a pity because against Chelsea you will have not too many chances and we had the two Charlie chances and Manolo got a one-on-one on the first half.

“We were a little bit unlucky the way we concede and we have possibilities and in this type of game you have to be really clinical to try to get something.”

Conceding right on the stroke of half time was a major blow for Saints and Pellegrino added: “At the end of the first half for me we were unlucky because it was the last second of the first half.

“Obviously we have to improve in this type of situation, in the way the free kick Alosno was really good from him, but maybe we can do something more.”

Liverpool will sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk - Craig Burley

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk has been heavily linked with Liverpool

That’s according to ESPN pundit Craig Burley who reckons the Dutchman could finally move to Anfield.

Van Dijk was desperate to head north in the summer and slapped down an official transfer request.

But Southampton complained about Liverpool’s overtures to the Premier League and the Reds publicly ended their interest.

Speculation continued throughout the summer but a deal failed to materialise.

Van Dijk has been reintegrated back into the Southampton side and has racked up 12 Premier League appearances this season.

Chelsea 1-0 Southampton: Alonso goal downs Saints

Show/hide article…

Saints were beaten 1-0 at Chelsea as they attempted to recover from their hammering at the hands of Leicester.

Time was on Chelsea’s side as Marcos Alonso’s free-kick earned victory.

Antonio Conte says time is running out in the title pursuit, even if Manchester City slip up, and said the clear leaders had been lucky with late goals.

But the Blues benefited at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, as more than the advertised minimum two minutes of first-half stoppage time had elapsed when Alonso curled in.

Conte, sent off against Swansea and fined £8,000 for misconduct, had been complaining about Saints’ persistent fouling and time-wasting.

But it was Mauricio Pellegrino who may feel aggrieved as Saints’ winless run was extended to five games to keep them in a congested lower half of the table.

Chelsea have now won eight of their last 10 league matches, including five in a row at Stamford Bridge.

But, as Conte pointed out on Friday, the gap to Manchester City had kept growing despite his side’s run.

And City are looking to bolster their squad in January with the addition of a central defender.

Saints’ Virgil van Dijk has been linked with City after his summer dalliance with Liverpool but after starting 11 successive games, the Dutchman was on the bench here.

Striker Alvaro Morata recovered from a back problem to be named as a Chelsea substitute. Michy Batshuayi was alongside him on the bench as Conte continued with a ‘false nine’ up front in Eden Hazard, with Willian and Pedro either side.

Willian played a one-two with Alonso in the left channel and steered a shot wide.

That chance came with Cedric Soares debilitated following a Gary Cahill challenge and the right wing-back was replaced by Mario Lemina soon afterwards.

Fraser Forster unconvincingly flapped at shots from Alonso, Cahill and N’Golo Kante.

Chelsea then fluffed a good chance when Pedro fed Hazard, who cut inside. His pass was just in front of Pedro and just short of Willian at the back post.

Conte wanted a penalty for Oriol Romeu’s challenge on Andreas Christensen and then complained about time-wasting as Saints tried to take the flow out of the game.

Forster saved from Alonso and then a deflected Pedro effort hit the post before Chelsea struck.

Hazard turned and burst away from Maya Yoshida, who was booked for fouling the Belgian.

Willian sized up the free-kick but it was Alonso who took it, curling left-footed around the wall and into the bottom corner. Forster was caught by surprise as Alonso celebrated his fourth league goal of the season.

About two minutes 30 seconds of stoppage time had elapsed, half a minute more than indicated by fourth official Bobby Madley.

Manolo Gabbiadini had been an isolated figure as Saints’ sole striker, but Charlie Austin had more of an impact as his replacement.

Austin might have scored with his first touch, latching on to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s through-ball before being denied by Thibaut Courtois.

Courtois next instructed Alonso to leave the ball and rolled it into his hands at the edge of the area. Hojbjerg appealed for handball, but no foul was given.

There were half-hearted penalty appeals for handball against substitute Cesc Fabregas, who, at the other end, slid the ball through Forster’s legs from the tightest of angles. The ball rolled along the goal line.

The lead was fragile and Chelsea had chances to double it, but 1-0 proved enough as the Blues played out time.

Chelsea 1-0 Southampton - are you on our crowd pics?

Show/hide article…

It was a fairly drab second half. Chelsea weren’t good at all and Saints were slow to show any ambition to attack.

Eventually, Mauricio Pellegrino brought on Sofiane Boufal and Charlie Austin, but it didn’t yield an equaliser.

In the end, it was Marcos Alonso’s goal that was the difference here. The left wing-back curled in a free-kick on the cusp of half-time.

Saints have now won once in nine games and are sitting precariously just above the bottom three.

Daily Echo chief photographer Stuart Martin was at Stamford Bridge to capture all the action between Chelsea and Southampton in the Premier League - be sure to check out the pictures above.
